Proponents argue that smartphones harm student behavior, mental health, and academic performance, while critics question emergency communication and the exclusion of high schools. The bill mandates schools to establish post-emergency communication policies. Rep. Scott Hilton suggested high school bans could follow in the future. Advocates, including ExcelinEd, highlight improved mental health and academics in states with similar bans. The bill passed the committee 4-1 and moves to the Senate Rules Committee. STORY 2: Cherokee County Students Place at State Tech Competition Six Cherokee County School District students earned statewide recognition at the Georgia Student Technology Competition. The contest, open to grades 3-12, showcases projects in categories like mobile apps, robotics, and video production. Thirty-eight CCSD students advanced to state after winning regionals. State winners include Micah Currie (Productivity Design), Jackson Davis and Bella Higgins (Animation), and James Moody (Digital Photo Production), all earning second place. Zephyr Johnson (Device Modification) and Jack Mizelle (Project Programming) secured third place. STORY 3: Trader Joe's Could be Coming to Adair Park in Woodstock Adair Park developer Eric Richards is seeking to expand the Woodstock development with a mixed-use project that could include a Trader Joe's. Richards has applied for permits to build single-family homes, townhomes, and a multi-family building with retail space, including a grocery store. Plans also propose extending Short Street and creating a pedestrian-friendly road connecting Main Street and Rope Mill Road. The project, which may require $9 million in city funding for infrastructure, is under review by Woodstock's Planning Commission and City Council in April. Richards aims to complete the development by 2030. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The Board of Commissioners approved an $849,000 construction services agreement with Place Services, Inc., plus an $85,000 contingency. This phase includes clearing, earthwork, and stormwater system installation, with clearing expected to start by month's end. The building is still in design, with construction contracts anticipated by summer and completion expected within a year. Funded 80% by a federal grant and 20% by local sales tax, the facility will address current space shortages and support CATS' growth for 20+ years. STORY 5: Tort Reform Passes Another Hurdle in Georgia General Assembly Gov. Brian Kemp's priority tort reform bill, Senate Bill 68, advanced through a Georgia House committee after extensive hearings. The bill aims to curb high jury awards impacting businesses by introducing measures like premises liability guidelines, seat belt evidence in auto cases, and limiting medical damage claims to actual costs. Concerns about its impact on sex trafficking victims led to amendments allowing exceptions for these cases, avoiding retraumatization in court. While some lawmakers pushed for broader protections for other sexual crime victims, the focus remained on trafficking. The bill, already passed by the Senate, may reach the House floor soon. It's really refreshing when someone comes from the research science world into the chiropractic world and brings wisdom with them. Amy Haas is such a person. Dr. Amy Haas is a New England native, born and raised in Connecticut. After completing a bachelor's, master's, and PhD in Biochemistry, Dr. Amy completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Pathology at Harvard Medical School in Boston. She then accepted a position as a Research Scientist/Enzymologist at ZymeQuest, a small biotech in Beverly, MA specializing in blood products. After experiencing a series of injuries that had left her unable to enjoy her favorite activities, Dr. Amy tried several approaches to get well again. It wasn't until she found Structural Chiropractic care that she was truly able to heal and have restored function. This experience was so powerful that she decided to change career paths and become a Doctor of Chiropractic. After having graduated Summa Cum Laude as a Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. Amy completed a year and a half of apprenticeship with Dr. Eric Richards of HealthSprout Chiropractic before moving back home to New England to start her own practice. Dr. Amy Haas is the only doctor in the greater Nashua area practicing her unique and specific focus: NeuroStructural Correction. Unlike many conventional chiropractors in the area, Dr. Amy draws upon her knowledge and experience as both a Doctor of Biochemistry and Chiropractic. This allows her to provide highly effective outcomes and help her patients get the best results she can provide. She published a paper in the Chiropractic Journal of Australia, along with David Russell, titled "Sustained Improvement of Heart Rate Variability in Patients Undergoing a Program of Chiropractic Care," a retrospective case series. The Foundation for Vertebral Subluxation has awarded Amy Haas, DC, Ph.D., Researcher of the Year for her work on its multi-pronged project to address questions related to the role of chiropractic care in immune function. When not in her practice, Dr. Amy can be found playing with her dogs, cooking healthy dishes, practicing yoga, or exploring greater New England's outdoor recreational opportunities. On this podcast, you'll hear Dr. Amy talk about: Leaving research for chiropractic Heart rate variability and chiropractic Her camper And MUCH More! Welcome to the Design Thinking 101 podcast! I'm Dawan Stanford, your host. Today's episode is part one of a two-part series on Design for America. Design for America is a nationwide network that supports innovation for social impact. DFA was founded at Northwestern University, and is helping to shape the next generation of social innovators and design-led studios on over 40 college campuses. Today, we'll speak to three guests about what Design for America is and what does the experience look like when a member participates in a Design for America studio. We start our episode with Eric Richards explaining how he founded Design for America on the UC San Diego campus. Eric was interested in human-led design and, coupled with his interest in social impact, Eric started to search Facebook for others who had a similar desire in utilizing both fields interchangeably. He found a Good Design Lab founded by Don Mormont at UC San Diego. Many of the UC San Diego students who were interested in human-led design had worked at this lab. Eric liked the concept, applied to the university, and was accepted to the program. Through this lab and Don's involvement, many design classes were available to students. Eric joined Good Design Lab as a sophomore - the year after the lab was founded - and took the introductory design class. During his journey with Good Design Lab, Eric became part of a very tight-knit community. He was grateful to have found a community that, like Eric, valued using their skill set for social impact. Andrew Demas discovered DFA by accident while he was a student. He had a friend who was involved in DFA, and one day Andrew visited the Good Design Lab. He fell in love with the process and how the process affects social impact. DFA taught Andrew how to find out who your user is, gaining empathy for the user, and developing a solution for someone else. His new perspective not only changed the way he solved problems in real-world applications, it also changed his view of how he thinks about his curriculum at school, and changed the way he works towards coming up with solutions. Throughout this time, Andrew was connected to many other students who had a passion for design and for giving back to their community in a sustainable way. He was able to put his newfound skills to use when he and his classmates rebuilt a community center that was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. Andrew felt that DFA gave him his best college and learning experience in university, and he's passionate about his alumni board and networking for future leaders of design thinking and to get more corporations involved with DFA. William Moner is a faculty member who sponsors a DFA Studio at Elon University. Dawan Stanford approached William to mentor and encourage students to engage in the design process. William talks about the process of creating a DFA Studio, using DFA guides, and bringing together the efforts of everyone involved to make DFA happen on campus. He also discusses the challenges of mentoring and recruiting students for DFA.   Bio Eric Richards is starting his last year at UC San Diego, where he's studying Human-Computer Interaction and Design for Social Innovation. His interest is in design that empowers communities and advances equity and sustainability. He currently leads Design for America at UCSD, and advises undergraduate humanitarian engineering projects on campus. Andrew Demas is a Senior Managing Consultant in IBM's Digital Strategy & IX practice and is also the digital account partner for one of IBM's top telecommunications clients. As an IBM Design Thinking Leader, he runs the New York Design Thinking Chapter. His passion for design started with DFA; he served as President of the Barnard-Columbia Design for America Studio for three years, and he currently sits on the DFA Alumni Board.  William Moner is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Elon University and is the faculty mentor for the Elon Design for America studio. He holds a Ph.D. in Radio-Television-Film from the University of Texas, and his research focuses on emerging methods of storytelling and interactive media production through open software platforms and systems.   In This Episode [01:28] Eric tells his story of how he founded Design for America at UCSD.  [02:54] Eric's early experience with DFA chapter on campus. CONVENE ‘What's Your Work Worth’ dealt with questions we all face around the value of our work. Whether you are running a team, creating a product or providing your talent, the question of the worth of your work is one of the most difficult we face. How much do you charge for what you offer, what you do and what you make? How do you know when unpaid/underpaid work is actually an opportunity or when it is just being taking advantage of?
To answer these questions and more, this conversation featured Rollie Pemberton aka Cadence Weapon and producer and manager Iva Golubovic, along with Rahul Madan and Eric Richards of WIL Studios. This conversation took place at Free Space in Toronto in partnership with The Creator Class.

Walsh, thanks The Guys for announcing their forthcoming beta test of their new genealogy database software, and he restated the company's commitment to having users involved in developing and testing their program.Listener email this week includes: an inquiry concerning the availability of genealogy software for the Blackberry; a reminder of how to access, play, and download our previous podcasts (using the POD icon to the left of each episode's title); several emails from listeners telling George about the availability of Ohio Death Certificates (1908-1953) at the FamilySearch Labs site (http://search.labs.familysearch.org/); a discussion of a genealogy filing system by source; using an iPod shuffle (~ $40) vs. a more expensive player when mowing the lawn and listening to the podcast; and a discussion of why some stores with photocopy facilities will not copy (or allow copying) of photographs.George announces that the third episode of RootsTelevision.com's series, Down Under: Florida with The Genealogy Guys will be debuting in mid-August. In tandem with its premiere, George has written a case study, "The Milton Family Tragedy," for Family Chronicle Magazine. The issue containing this article will appear on newsstands at about the same time in August. The story describes the behind-the-scenes research involved in filming the story, and it includes a couple of additional surprises.George discusses the Asus Eee PC, a small PC loaded with Windows XP, that is lightweight, fully functional, and has Wi-Fi. You can take this little gem with you almost everywhere with your entire genealogy database and all the multimedia resources. The price makes this little PC a very attractive item. Visit AsusTEK at http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=24&l2=164 for more details, and then use your favorite search engine to search for "asus eee" to locate the best place and lowest price to purchase.Drew recommends that subscribers to genealogy mailing lists be sure to use a "plain text" setting in their e-mail software in order to prevent strange characters appearing in their messages.  He also describes his experiences in using microform equipment that scans an image for use in e-mailing or saving to a USB flash drive (instead of printing the image).Drew discusses a book he is reading: Brittania's Children: Emigration from England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales Since 1600, by Eric Richards.
