How Faculty Diversity Drives Enrollment: The PhD Project's 90% Success Model

Changing Higher Ed

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 3, 2024 38:42

Faculty Diversity: A Business Case for Higher Education Success When the PhD Project launched in 1994, you could count the number of diverse students at major business school recruiting events on one hand. Today, after 30 years of systemic change, the initiative has graduated over 1,700 faculty members of color with an extraordinary 90% completion rate – nearly double the national average for doctoral programs. Even more remarkable, 97% of these graduates stay in academia. But here's what makes this story particularly compelling for university leaders: Research has shown that the presence of a diverse faculty is the second highest correlating factor (after state demographics) in attracting diverse students to universities. It's not just about representation – it's about institutional success and survival in an increasingly global economy. This episode of Changing Higher Ed® features Dr. Jeffrey Robinson, Graduate of the PhD Project, Interim Chancellor at Rutgers University, Newark, and Blane Ruschak, President of the PhD Project and Consultant with KPMG. The PhD Project is a 30-year-old initiative focused on increasing diversity in business school faculty. The podcast highlights the project's impact on diversifying the talent pipeline by providing mentorship and support to underrepresented students pursuing PhDs in business. Robinson and Ruschak share their personal experiences and explain the project's systemic approach to change, emphasizing the economic benefits of a diverse workforce alongside recruiting, retaining, and supporting diverse faculty. Key Discussion Points: The Origins and Mission of the PhD Project: Founded nearly 30 years ago to address the lack of diversity in business schools and the workforce. Aims to increase the number of underrepresented minority faculty in business schools, which in turn attracts more diverse students to the field. Driven by the recognition of a changing global business environment and the demand for a diverse workforce. How the PhD Project Works: Sponsors an annual conference for underrepresented minority students to learn about business PhD programs. Provides financial support, networking opportunities, and mentorship to students throughout their doctoral journey. Boasts a 90% completion rate for its participants, with 97% staying in academia. Continues to support graduates through developmental programs focused on teaching, research, and leadership. The Benefits of Faculty Diversity in Academia: Diverse faculty serve as role models for students, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. They bring different lived experiences, perspectives, and connections to the classroom, enriching the learning environment for all students. Contributes to groundbreaking research and innovative solutions. The Economic Imperative for Diversity: Diverse workforces are better equipped to relate to a wider range of clients and customers. Companies benefit from the diverse perspectives and talents of their employees. The Role of Mentorship and Community: The PhD Project creates a strong support network for participants, helping them navigate the challenges of doctoral studies. Alumni continue to mentor and collaborate with each other, further strengthening the community. Challenges and Solutions in Diversity Recruitment: Retaining diverse faculty is crucial and requires universities to provide adequate support and protect them from excessive service demands. Universities must hold leaders accountable for diversity recruitment goals. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Invest in recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, recognizing the long-term benefits of attracting and educating a diverse student body. Provide necessary support and mentorship to diverse faculty, ensuring their success and protecting them from being overburdened with diversity-related tasks. Hold university leaders accountable for achieving diversity goals and creating an inclusive campus environment. Final Thoughts The PhD Project is a powerful example of how a focused effort can make a significant impact on diversifying higher education and the workforce. Its success lies in its comprehensive approach, which combines financial support, mentorship, and community building. Last Monday, 76% of California Faculty Association members voted to approve the tentative agreement reached by the CFA and CSU system. Once the CSU Board of Trustees approves the agreement, its terms and conditions will take effect. The next trustee meeting will be held from March 24 through March 27 but CFA members have urged trustees to arrange a meeting sooner to implement the agreement's conditions as soon as possible. For every additional $1,000 initially borrowed, the borrower will receive relief after an additional year of payments. Today is our fourth episode of transfer-focused podcasts. We have been looking at various aspects of transfer at Ivy Tech including the role of our transfer advocates on each campus to a look at recent changes and opportunities with dual credit transfer and how students can complete high school with one year already earned toward their college degree. In our most recent podcast, we discussed what is happening on a statewide level to expand transfer opportunities for students. Today, we are going to change our focus to highlight what we believe the be one of our oldest and strongest partnerships with a four-year university. Long before Ivy Tech was named as the community college for Indiana with transfer as a specific part of our mission, IUPUI and Ivy Tech forged a partnership called Passport to specifically identify transfer opportunities and provide a bridge for transferring from Ivy Tech to IUPUI. This partnership has now been in existence for more than 22 years and has successfully assisted literally thousands of students over that time.  Our guests this week are: Dr. Kathy Lee, Chancellor, Ivy Tech Community College, Central Indiana Dr. Kathy Johnson, Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Academic Officer, IUPUI Dr. Cathy Buyarski, Executive Associate Dean, University College, IUPUI  Dr. Rod Brown, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Ivy Tech Central Indiana We included several calls to action in this week's episode. The Importance of Research in Healthcare with Dr. Richard Larson - Ep #56

When Science Speaks

Research is a critical component to continuing advances in technology and treatments in healthcare. A focused research mission is what leads to those improvements, and the ability for researchers to secure funding and operate efficiently goes a long way towards achieving that goal. So where is the best place to put resources into research and development? This week’s guest believes that research is best done hand-in-hand with academic institutions, and has a career of success to back it up. Dr. Richard Larson is an entrepreneur and an academic leader. He serves as Executive Vice Chancellor of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, as well as President and Chairman of the Board of the New Mexico Bioscience Authority.  Dr. Larson also helped to found TriCore Reference Laboratories, New Mexico's 10th largest business and its largest Medical Laboratory. He was formerly Chairman of the Board of TriCore, and currently is a member of the Board of Directors.  Dr. Larson received his PhD in Immunology from Harvard University as well as his MD from Harvard Medical School. He’s also a summa cum laude graduate of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, where he earned his AB in chemistry. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of When Science Speaks [2:37] The challenges Dr. Larson has faced in his mission to improve public education and health care across the state of New Mexico [3:57] Why university research is important [5:34] Utilizing new discoveries to improve healthcare and society to promote job growth [12:04] Promoting Healthcare equity for minorities [18:30] Lessons Dr. Larson has learned in his work at the Health Sciences Center [24:22] Improving wealth by improving health [29:01] Dr. Larson’s advice for upcoming entrepreneurs Connect with Dr. Richard Larson Bio for Dr. Larson LinkedIn for Dr. Larson Improving collaboration between departments One of the difficult things about scientific discovery is that the scientific community as a whole is compartmentalized. Traditional medical school is broken up into different departments such as neuroscience, cell biology, and neurology. The faculty in these departments do not typically work with each other very often. As Dr. Larson says in the episode, it is difficult for a pharmacist to work with a neurologist.  Dr. Larson saw this issue and developed mechanisms that allowed them to collaborate more often and create a connection between departments. Because of these endeavors, as well as his work implementing incentive-based pay programs, Dr. Larson and his team were able to increase funding and advance their work in vaccines, HPV, Ebola, and sleep apnea. The increased results have helped lead to the funding of over 900 active projects. Improving equity in the healthcare system One of the biggest problems with healthcare in America today is the issue of equity. Treatment for the same injury will differ for each individual patient based upon their economic status, as well as other factors such as ethnicity. The work that Dr. Larson does in New Mexico is a unique experience because the state is one of the few majority minority states in the US, with 45% of the population being Hispanic, while 40% is Caucasian.  As Dr. Larson points out in this week’s episode, there is also growing research into the idea that certain ethnic groups actually need different treatments. For example, Dr. Larson’s research and clinical trials were able to show the differences in the way that African American children should be treated for asthma. So, while the need for equity of treatment quality needs to be improved for lower-income families, some treatments are better suited to one ethnicity than another.  Learn more about Dr. Richard Larson and his research at the University of New Mexico on this week’s episode of When Science Speaks. Preconference Preview Part 3: Combating "Fake News" This week, we have another in our series of Charleston Conference preconference previews! We have an amazing group of preconference sessions that will be held on Monday and Tuesday, November 6 and 7, prior to the start of the main conference. This is the third installment in our series of preconference previews, and we’ll continue that in the future with more episodes that interview the presenters and give a little bit more background and detail on the sessions themselves. You can find registration for these sessions on the main conference registration page, and session details are available on the conference website. As a reminder, there are several applications that are open for opportunities at the conference we’d like to draw your attention to. First, the Charleston Fast Pitch Competition is looking for proposals that pitch a winning idea to improve service at an academic or research library. This contest is designed to recognize and reward new innovation in academic library and information management. The Juried Product Development Forums, or JPDF’s, are designed to offer publishers and vendors a chance to discuss new products in development, or improvements to existing products, and receive feedback from librarians and library workers. The Charleston Premiers are lightning round sessions designed to showcase new products and innovations already in the marketplace but that may not be widely known yet. Details on all of these events are available on the conference website at the links provided in the show notes. Registration for the conference is open now. Be sure to register by September 15 to receive the early bird rate – our regular and late rates have increased this year but the early bird rate stayed the same as the past few years. The session will be moderated by Judy Luther, President of Informed Strategies. Professionally she’s passionate about good design of content that meets the needs of the users. Personally Judy loves being outdoors in nature and enjoy quiet moments with a good cup of tea. Pierre Montagano is the Business Development Director for Code Ocean, a Cornell Tech incubated startup. He has over 20 years’ experience in publishing but recently left to work with researchers in developing an executable code repository that helps facilities reproducibility and reuse of scientific code. Heather Staines is Director of Partnerships for Hypothesis, a non-profit open source annotation/collaboration technology, working with publishers, educators, journalists, and researchers to bring annotation to conversations anywhere on the web. She has a background in scholarly publishing and educational technology. Lisa Janicke Hinchliffe is a Professor and Coordinator for Information Literacy and affiliate faculty in the School of Information Sciences at the University of Illinois. A passionate educator, she speaks and writes frequently about library services and impact on library users. Since Judy is moderating the session, she also moderates the podcast interview.   Before we get to the interview, Katina Strauch has some updates to her “If Rumors Were Horses”  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has selected the awesome Elaine L. Westbrooks, associate university librarian for research at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, as its new University librarian and vice provost for University Libraries. Approved by the University’s Board of Trustees, the appointment is effective Aug. 15. “Chancellor Carol Folt and I are excited to welcome Elaine to Carolina,” said Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost James W. Dean Jr. “She brings more than 19 years of higher education library experience to her role, where she will oversee one of the top-ranked university library systems in the country, including its services and more than 9 million volumes across 10 libraries.” At the University of Michigan, Westbrooks led the library’s support of the research enterprise, facilitated the management of the operations and budget. Prior to her time in Ann Arbor, Westbrooks worked at research libraries at three other universities. She served as associate dean of libraries at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, held several positions in technical services at Cornell University Libraries and worked as a digital research and Latin American Cataloger at the University of Pittsburgh. The co-author of three books, along with several book chapters, Westbrooks lectures at numerous conferences. She also serves on the Association for Research Libraries Visioning Taskforce, was recently the chair of the HathiTrust Rights and Access Committee and also served on the HathiTrust Program Steering Committee. Westbrooks earned a bachelor of arts degree in linguistics and a master’s degree in information and library science from the University of Pittsburgh. She succeeds Sarah Michalak, who retired in December 2016. Carol Hunter, deputy University librarian and associate University librarian for collections and services, has served as interim University librarian since Michalak’s departure. She will retire from Carolina on Oct. 1. It’s been too long since we saw Bill Kane in Charleston! Bill is at Wake Forest University in the Digital Publishing Department. What a dynamo! Anyway, just got an email from Bill who has also worked at Blackwell’s and Alibris, remember? Bill was writing Beth Bernhardt, Rosann Bazirjian and yours truly to tell us that the long-retired Jack Walsdorf left us on July 9, 2017. You might remember that Jack sponsored the Rachel K. Schenck Memorial Scholarship  for the Charleston  Conference for five years (2003-2007). Jack was so generous and he knew everyone back in the day. Jack used to select a book a year to distribute at Christmas from Blackwell’s.  He also ran several evening talks on rare books way back when the Charleston Conference was in its infancy. Back then we were holding the Conference in the College of Charleston Lightsey Conference Center which has since closed and become classrooms. A Memorial Service to honor Jack is being planned to take place in the month of September. In lieu of flowers, please consider a charitable donation in Jack's memory to one of the following organizations that he himself supported:  The Lake Oswego Preservation Society: http://lakeoswegopreservationsociety.org The William Morris Society in the United States: http://www.morrissociety.org or a library of one's choice. http://docs.lib.purdue.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=4501&context=atg http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Jack-Walsdorf&lc=7398&pid=186070273&mid=7481936 Bill also sends a link to a wonderful interview with Jack from a few years ago. http://themorrisian.blogspot.com/2013/04/the-morrisian-interview-series-2-john-j.html The incredibly resilient Chuck Hamaker sent me a link to a recent article in the Guardian – Is the staggeringly profitable business of scientific publishing bad for science?. It’s long but is a summary of much of what we in libraries have lived through over the past several decades – the growth of powerful publishing companies, rising journal costs, shrinking budget, the big deal. There are many familiar people and companies we know. Richard Charkin, Albert Henderson, Pergamon, Springer, Elsevier, John Coales, Denis Noble, Bob Houbeck, and last but not least Robert Maxwell. I remember visiting Pergamon in England hoping to get an interview, if not a glimpse of the famous man. Della Sar, Brian Cox, Inge Valentine, Bob Miranda have many reminiscences (favorable and unfavorable). I also remember -- it was during the Charleston Conference in November 5, 1991 that we learned that Maxweil had died when he fell off his yacht in the Canary Islands, leading to much speculation and autopsies. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/jun/27/profitable-business-scientific-publishing-bad-for-science http://www.charlestonlibraryconference.com/archives-old.php So long for now!
