Today With Gordon and Kelly Clements: In this episode of Bound by Business, we have the privilege of learning from Kelly and Gordon Clements, the father-daughter duo behind Gordon's Window Decor. Gordon founded the company in 1986, growing it from a one-man operation in his Vermont basement to an internationally recognized business. In 2003, Kelly joined the company, working her way up from entry-level positions to eventually taking over as president in 2015. Throughout the conversation, Kelly and Gordon share invaluable insights on navigating multi-generational leadership transitions, leading with values, fostering a culture of innovation, and building trust with team members. They emphasize the importance of putting family first, staying curious, and being willing to take risks. With special guest: Dr Linda Nielsen…in conversation with Bill Kable Our guest, Dr Linda Nielsen speaks to us today from North Carolina in the United States about a topic that nearly everyone has a stake in but on which there is very little guidance. How important is the relationship between a daughter and her father? This topic has been explored by Dr Nielsen in her book Father-Daughter Relationships: Contemporary Research & Issues. Many studies have been directed at the importance of a mother’s relationships with her children. But a father may need some reassurance about the value of his relationship with his daughter particularly if he feels more comfortable with his son. The first thing we get to check with Dr Nielsen is what is it that fathers do for their daughters? Are they really needed? Podcast (mp3)

TW: Death, Dark Themes, Language There was a different subject planned for Episode 3 (which is now going to be Episode 4), but as our listeners will soon learn, Mother Joseph continually makes her presence known as we continue this project and steers it accordingly. One of the patterns that keeps happening is finding unexpected familial connections to the players in this Hidden brick story, again and again. Sara learned through discussions with her husband Dave that his grandfather Billy worked in WWII at a Vancouver site that is related to the Hidden family called the Kaiser Shipyard. A string of local tragedies linked to the industrial area began in the 1940s, and as we told you in Episode Two, Sara herself has a history with the marine industry and some connected local hauntings in particular. Seeing the latest family link as a sign to take a deeper look into the area, Sara went to take photos of the supposedly haunted Kaiser boatyard for the Hidden Brick page of our website. It turned out that Dave's grandfather working there as a young man wasn't the biggest Synchronicity whopper that day, which unexpectedly led to Sara sobbing in a random neighborhood park on a Saturday afternoon. We promise never to leave you bummed out at the end of an episode - we will end with a discussion about how the very first live tweeting of Episode 1 by our friend and MothPit Network founder Sage left us crying with laughter and led to a funny T-shirt. Talk about how through evolution, he went from being my neighbor to being an instant dad when he and my mom started dating and later married. How he'll never be a step ANYTHING because he never missed a step. But (comma) there are some things that designed me to be and do the things I did and do with men because of some daddy issues I possess. However, I can work through that and know that he did the best he could with the know how he possessed... Which will never change the way I love him! This is a very personal and touching solo-podcast episode about the love of the game of basketball, of Kobe, of our daughters, and of the importance of girls sports.    Kobe’s intense drive, work ethic, athleticism, and Mamba Mentality made him our hero. His pure love for his daughters made him human and relatable. After Kobe and his beloved Gigi’s tragic passing, the hashtag GirlDad reminded us how a father taking the time to teach the small and big life lessons is not just a gift to his daughter, but even more so to himself as his heart is softened and opened to let love in.  SHOW NOTE LINKS:   #GirlDad Essay on Medium   #GirlDad on Instagram CONNECT WITH US! *Dear Family, Podcast Page *Write Now Rachel Website *Rachel's Blog @Medium *Rachel’s Twitter *Facebook *Instagram   PLEASE JOIN: ***Dear Family Members, the Private Facebook Group       WAYS TO HELP THE PODCAST: *PLEASE Leave a 5-Star Review ***Listen and Subscribe via iTunes!!!  ***Listen and Subscribe via Stitcher!!! ***Listen and Subscribe via Spotify!!!   Thank you! Fathers are often regarded as secondary parents in many cultures, perhaps even more so when they have girls. We examine why this can be damaging, and the ways in which fathers can have a profound influence on how their daughters navigate the world. Evolutionary anthropologist Dr Anna Machin explains why human fathers are in the only five per cent of mammals that stick around after the birth of their offspring, and why that's important, particularly for girls. Father and daughter team Jerry and Chloe Hughes, who run a fine art foundry, talk about how working together has changed their family dynamic for the better. We also look at the consequences of a dysfunctional father-daughter relationship. Professor of Adolescent and Educational Psychology Dr Linda Nielsen describes how a poor relationship with a father affects a daughter's life choices well into adulthood. Writer and podcaster Carvell Wallace gives some sage parenting advice to fathers of teenage girls, and we hear from Australian dad Jonathan Poyter, who took part in a 13-week programme called DADEE at Newcastle University in Australia, where dads and daughters learn to bond through sports. And it's not just a one way street. Dr Joan Costa-Font, professor in the Department of Health Policy at the London School of Economics, tells us about his latest research, which shows that daughters also have a big impact on the behaviour of their fathers. I'm so glad we took the time to talk.  Mark LaMaster is the founder of Uplifting Dads who strives to ensure that each and every dad has the access to positive, encouraging, and faith-filled resources about how to be the best parent they can be.  Uplifting Dads exists in order to build a sense of community among like-minded fathers who want to learn from, strengthen, and support one another in a space free of judgment or criticism. Mark is a dad of two teenagers, a husband, an author, a speaker, and a dad coach whose mission is to offer a place of encouragement and inspiration for men to become the father they've always dreamed of being. You can connect with Mark through his website, www.UpliftingDads.com or via email, Mark@UpliftingDads.com Mark's fatherhood books are available at Amazon.com Mark would also like to offer a FREE 30-Day Devotional for Dads!

Hardly a day goes by without headlines reminding us of the huge challenges facing the UK’s prison service. The system depends on having the right staffing and the right resources in place. But it also depends on prisoners being able to develop – and sustain – positive relationships. In this series for the RSA, Rachel O’Brien explores some of the connections that have helped people rebuild their lives. Paul was released from prison a couple of years ago and is now working. Rachel O’Brien talked to him and his two daughters about their relationship, and the impact that Paul’s time inside has had on them. “In my life there have been very few people there for me when I’ve needed them, and I’m very bad at asking for support. My daughters showed me that when I needed them, they were there.” – Paul

Black fathers who are raising daughters are so crucial to our future. A strong King can make the difference in lives for generations to come. They say a daughter looks for a man like her father to marry. They say a father is the first man to love his daughter and teaches her how to receive love. That a man is vital to his daughter knowing her self worth. If these statements are true, why do we rarely hear about Kings and their daughters...in a positive light?
