It's week 3 of our NYC series and we're certainly not having a day off, it's acting legend Matthew Broderick! Star of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Producers, The Lion King, and so many more, Matthew is a born and bred New Yorker so it was meant to be! We got details of his morning coffee routine, sharing the milk with his cat, what it was like working with Marlon Brando, spending time in Ireland, visiting his mum every weekend and the delicious food they ate, eating around London & New York while working on the West End & Broadway, and we find out whether Matthew or his wife SJP has a bigger wall of shoes! What a treat to be at the top of The Standard High Line with Matthew pointing out all of the best hot spots in NYC out the window, thank you so much for joining us Matthew!! Hosted on Acast. TV critic Dan Fienberg from The Hollywood Reporter returns to break down the second-to-last episode of Saturday Night Live's 50th season, the latest from Top Chef, and the return of Poker Face with Natasha Lyonne. He also weighs in on new releases like MurderBot and Duster, and shares thoughts on the quiet shutdown of Amazon's Freevee. Later, Nick and Esmeralda Leon go down a 2017 rabbit hole and uncover a few truly baffling TV shows that somehow made it to air—yes, there was a Ferris Bueller series, and no, it didn't go well. Send us a textIt's a BRAND NEW episode of Bakotunes! I'm honored to welcome my guest Monique Powell of Save Ferris to the show! It was an opportunity I could not pass up and after a few tech delays, it finally happened. Monique and I go back to the early days of the band in Orange County, gigging alongside ska homies Reel Big Fish and more before getting swept up in the third wave ska craze and a hit single - a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners 80s classic, "Come On Eileen"! That was followed with tours across the globe and back, in the van, and of course, tons of sweaty ska shows packed with sweaty, skankin' checkerboard kids. It was the nineties and it was a blast. Lots of fun facts and ska time warping! We also have classic Save Ferris music and their latest single, "Get Dancing!" that just dropped at all music outlets on 4/25. Enjoy! https://saveferris.com/**Episode features the songs "Come On Eileen," "Get Dancing", "The World Is New" by Save Ferris. Also contains excerpts from: "Orange County, CA (1976)", "MTV Skaturday", Save Ferris Honda Commercial, "Sid & Nancy", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", "Teens React to 90s Ska Music".Sponsored by Chain Cohn Clark - Kern County's leading accident, injury, and workers' compensation law firm. The Outsiders (1983), Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), and Say Anything (1989). This week, Janet, John (and Pen) take a look at three films that explore the lives of teenagers and angst in the 80s with very different tones and intentions. Whether the story explores a teen in the perfect urban home with mom, dad, and kid sister, a real loner with a dream, or only finding solace with a gang of other misfit kids, everyone wants to connect. Writer, Director, Stuntman. Nobody’s doing it like Nash Edgerton. Ladies and gentlemen, you've made a bold choice today. Instead of going to work, doing chores, attending school, or paying bills — you chose us. You chose to fake sick, throw on a bathrobe and spend your day with three grown men dissecting a 1986 teen comedy in order to get clout on the internet. Today, we live like Ferris. No responsibilities. No guilt. No Cameron whispering “I'm dying.” We're eating pancreas at fancy restaurants, crashing parades, and joyriding in a priceless Ferrari we have no business touching. Skynet AI 2029: James Cameron's The Terminator If you grew up in the 1980s, you were living in a decade that would be controlled by raunchy teen sex comedies (Porky's, My Tutor, Private Lessons), John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, 16 Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off), and the emergence of straight to video. However there was one genre that stood above all others and would forever alter the output of Hollywood. Action films had always been a part of Hollywood, however the 1980s would unleash the talents of Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis, as well as lesser box office talents such as Steven Seagal, Jean Claude Van Damme, and the continuing presence of 70s holdover, Chuck Norris. One name would stand above all others, however. Inhabiting the title role of the 1984 B-Movie, Low-Budget Classic, The Terminator, Director James Cameron would establish Austrian-born, seven-time Mr. Olympia Arnold Schwarzenegger, as - possibly - the greatest Action-Star to ever grace the Big Screen. The Terminator would change cinema and introduce both actor and director as formidable and genre defining talents. This week Mr. Chavez & I dive into the world of Artificial Intelligence and discuss one of the greatest Science Fiction films ever made. What are the lessons we should have learned from Cameron's film? What did we miss? How far away are we from Skynet becoming self-aware? There's a whole lot to unpack and we're diving right into all of it. This was an exciting and wonderfully joyous trip back to the 80s and a film that greatly defined both our youths, the decade, and the evolving world of Cinema. Back at it! Today we met the modern Ferris Bueller, who went to great lengths to skip school and attend a sleepover. The world's widest mouth has been discovered, a new gum claims to cure herpes, and Rick had fun trolling Dave over his advice to take Rory for The Masters, then not following through with it himself! April 11, 2025Today's Reading: Exodus 5:1-6:1Daily Lectionary: Exodus 5:1-6:1; Mark 15:33-47“Afterward Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'” But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.”” (Exodus 5:1-2) In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.If you are old enough or well-versed in classic “Biblical” cinema, you cannot hear these words from Exodus 5 without hearing the voice of Charlton Heston saying, “Let my people go.” Maybe you hear a really slow, confident “Let my Cameron go” from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. What a privilege we have to prepare for what is to come by looking back at previous accounts of Scripture. Exodus 5 is a beautiful foreshadowing of what of what we will remember next week. God's people were stuck in actual, physical slavery in the land of Egypt, and they longed for freedom. Forget Charlton Heston. Forget Ferris Bueller. What matters is that next week, we will relive and remember our Lord's silent plea to the one who holds the Children of God captive. Don't forget the words of the prophet Isaiah. “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth” (Isaiah 53:7). Our Lord cried out upon the cross. He prayed for His enemies. He said, “I thirst” to fulfill the Scripture. But nothing was as powerful or as important as the final words He spoke. Unlike Moses, our Lord was not going to the cross to plead with the Devil to release His children from bondage to sin and death. Jesus wasn't asking permission from anyone. He was silently taking back what was rightfully His, and His final words signaled that the fight was over. While hanging upon the cursed tree, right before giving up His spirit, Jesus cried out, “It is finished.” Prepare your heart well to remember the day. That day of victory is your day of victory. That was the day the Devil lost the fight over your soul. The Devil doesn't have a choice in our release. Our Lord has put him in his place. Marked with the sign of the cross, you are HIS! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Jesus, send Your angel legions, When the foe would us enslave. Hold us fast when sin assaults us; Come, then. Lord, Your people save. Overthrow at last the dragon; Send him to his fiery grave (LSB 521:6)-Rev. Timothy Chase, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Truman, MN.Audio Reflections Speaker: Rev. What a CreepSeason 29, Episode 2Stephen Collins & Jeffrey Jones (Replay ep!)Stephen Collins is best known for his role on the wholesome WB drama series 7th Heaven, which aired from 1996 to 2007. Jeffrey Jones is likely most recognized for portraying the cartoonish principal in Ferris Bueller's Day Off and the clueless dad in Beetlejuice. The Max show "Hollywood Demons" includes an entire episode discussing Collins's disturbing behavior, featuring testimonies from one of his victims. So we thought replaying this episode while Sonia goes on a well-deserved vacation would be good. Who among us isn't a little "Ferris Bueller," right? Outside of those rare, constantly driven and meticulous types, we all take little breaks and skirt by when we believe we can. The second Trump presidency seems like a lot of that - Donald and company just gliding by without putting in much effort to "show their work" but definitely there to hand in their assignment anyway. Such was the case with Trump's "Liberation Day" Rose Garden ceremony yesterday. So much pomp and circumstance for a day when many economists - even conservative lawmakers and farmers - believe Trump just ignited a trade war that's going to lead to a recession - or worse. Pffft; only commoners like us every really feel the kind of pain that comes with a recession (or worse) Even the Rupert Murdoch-owned Wall Street Journal editorial board called Trump's "Liberation Day" simply "buy another yacht day" for the well-connected and well-heeled.But say Trump and company actually do think sparking a global trade war via tariffs is somehow - for the first time in modern history - going to usher in some economic nirvana. They say that those who refuse to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. It was on 'Ferris Bueller's Day off' the he missed his economics teacher droning on about 'Hawley-Smoot' tariffs fanning the flames of the Great Depression, for example. Even noted C and D student George W. Bush knew the folly in adopting the "evil triplets" of "isolationism, protectionism and nativism." It was her, after all, who gave something of a 'master class' and precautionary warning about those "triplets" and a reminder the damage "Smoot-Hawley" (or is it "Hawley-Smoot?" did in the 1930s, in a CSPAN Q&A fourteen years ago.My God, George W. Bush sounding professorial by comparison. Then there's the formula used to decide the rate of reciprocal tariff being levied. One economist and author termed it a "back-of-the-envelope" calculation. It was back on November 21st last year that I had Georgia Recorder columnist Jay Bookman on to discuss the many and varied ways Trump's tariff, tax and deportation policies were going to impact Georgians' budgets. The reaction yesterday, throughout Georgia's economics circles was "pretty insane."
¿Te has puesto a pensar qué tan buenos son tus personajes favoritos?
What do tariffs, the Laffer Curve, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off have in common? More than you'd think. This week, we dive into the world of trade policy, culture wars, and deflated middle-aged fatherhood, all from the basement. From Trump's so-called "Liberation Day" of tariffs to secret WhatsApp groups planning military strikes, this episode examines how America's trade war is about identity, masculinity, and a long-festering grudge against Europe. With a history lesson on Smoot-Hawley, Reaganomics, and the ghost of Arthur Laffer, we ask: if America is only barely exposed to global trade, why the war on Europe? And is this all just economic policy reimagined as culture war th Join the gang! https://plus.acast.com/s/the-david-mcwilliams-podcast. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Hey Smarties! Today we’re revisiting an episode from earlier this year that might help you make sense of all the tit for tat tariff fight from the past few weeks. It unpacks some tariff history and the potential economic consequences of President Trump’s ongoing trade war. If President Donald Trump goes through with his plan to levy sweeping tariffs on foreign imports, it wouldn't be the first time the U.S. has done such a thing. Ever heard of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930? Anyone? Those tariffs are widely credited with sinking the United States deeper into the Great Depression. And although global trade looks different nowadays, they can teach us a lot about how Trump's protectionist approach to global trade could play out. On the show today, Inu Manak, a fellow for trade policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, explains how the Smoot-Hawley tariff debacle can shed light on the current moment, why the president has the power to wield tariffs in the first place, and how punishing trading partners could leave the U.S. economy at a disadvantage. Plus, what this fight has to do with the 1980s film “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” and Roomba vacuum cleaners! Later, one listener's call to visit your local butcher. And, dating coach Damona Hoffman, host of the “Dates and Mates” podcast, answers the “Make Me Smart” question just in time for Valentine's Day. Here's everything we talked about today: “Tariffs on Trading Partners: Can the President Actually Do That?” from Council on Foreign Relations “One Response to Trump's Tariffs: Trade That Excludes the U.S.” from The New York Times “The United States has been disengaging from the global economy” from the Peterson Institute for International Economics “Protectionism 100 years ago helped ignite a world war. Could it happen again?” from The Washington Post “The US is one of the least trade-oriented countries in the world – despite laying the groundwork for today's globalized system” from The Conversation Double your impact when you donate to Marketplace today, thanks to a $30,000 match from the Investors Challenge Fund: https://support.marketplace.org/smart-sn

We would have called this Episode 51 of the Lean Whiskey podcast with Jamie Flinchbaugh and Mark Graban. Episode page with video and more Lean Whiskey is transitioning to a new brand, Lean Coffee Talk, so stay tuned for more episodes from Mark and Jamie. We're also calling this Episode #1 of Season 2 of the podcast series. If you're subscribed, the podcast logo will change but the feed will continue as is. We are just as passionate about their coffee beverages as the whiskey. We'll still talk about lean stuff, ranging from in-the-news to our own topics of choice. In this first installment, Mark and Jamie each have an espresso. Mark from an automated home machine and Jamie's from a more manual process. In future episodes, we'll likely get more into the process. In this episode, we begin exploring the challenges of supply chain risk and dealing with the disruptions of tariffs. Uncertainty is having a huge impact on the economy. We discuss the impact on coffee from Columbia, the Risk Index from the Center for Supply Chain Research at Lehigh, and even Ferris Bueller's Day Off. We move on to discuss the changes being made at Starbucks. What allowed them to grow may not allow them to stay strong, but then again, there may be some subtle magic in those changes from free refills in store to having your name on your cup. We explore the deliberate breakup of Honeywell, following in the footsteps of GE. This helps make an organization more focused on customers, value delivery, and the needed operations to make it all work. Is this a trend? If so, there are several reasons we believe it's a favorable one. We close out the topics with Mark's Toyota experience during a recent tour seeing examples of "raku", or devices that provide comfort or ease for team members. SNL 50th feature of Coffee Talk The threat of tariffs drives up coffee prices Ben Stein on tariffs from Ferris Bueller's Day Off Center for Supply Chain Research at Lehigh's Supply Chain Risk Index Jamie's IndustryWeek article on Supply Chain Risk Starbucks adds in-store free refills and writes names on cups again Honeywell breaks itself up, but is still acquiring Mark's TMMK tour and writing about "raku" Podcast feed at LeanCoffeeTalk.com or jflinch.com/leancoffeetalk

We're back with a new series for the month of March and who else is ready for the Spring Time!?! We kick it off with the 1986 classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off! This one hits close to home for us since it takes place in Chicago.Check it out and see if we are now all Rooney's or still want to be Ferris! *Released the weekend of 3/7/2025
Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for March 3, 2025 is: draconian dray-KOH-nee-un adjective Draconian describes something (often a law, policy, restriction, etc.) that is very severe or cruel. // The editorial criticizes the draconian measures being taken by city hall to rein in spending. See the entry > Examples: “The auras that surround the Sharks and the Hawks are wildly distinct, even if the teams' records are close to the same. To put it in Chicago terms, one team has the vibe of a Ferris Bueller (plays hooky, joins random parades, chicks dig him)—and the other is, I'm sorry to say, increasingly Principal Rooney–esque (grim faced, tightly wound, represents a draconian institution).” — Katie Baker, The Ringer, 15 Jan. 2025 Did you know? Draconian comes from Drakōn, the name (later Latinized as Draco) of a 7th-century B.C. Athenian legislator who created a written code of law. Drakōn's code was intended to clarify existing laws, but its severity is what made it really memorable. According to the code, even minor offenses were punishable by death, and failure to pay one's debts could result in slavery. Draconian, as a result, is used especially for authoritarian actions that are viewed as cruel or harsh.

Lead by the inimitable front-woman Monique Powell, the band enjoyed mainstream success in the late 1990s with radio hits, constant touring and appearances on a variety of television shows and movies. The band released their debut EP "Introducing Save Ferris" on Powell's own Starpool Records, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars, thanks to loyal fans and huge support from Orange County independent record shops. That same year, Powell provided vocals on the Reel Big Fish song "She Has A Girlfriend Now" on their album "Turn the Radio Off" (Mojo). https://www.SaveFerris.com Social Media / saveferrisofficialband PLEASE SUBSCRIBE! If President Donald Trump goes through with his plan to levy sweeping tariffs on foreign imports, it wouldn’t be the first time the U.S. has done such a thing. Ever heard of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930? Anyone? Those tariffs are widely credited with sinking the United States deeper into the Great Depression. And although global trade looks different nowadays, they can teach us a lot about how Trump’s protectionist approach to global trade could play out. Plus, what this fight has to do with the 1980s film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and Roomba vacuum cleaners! Later, one listener’s call to visit your local butcher. And, dating coach Damona Hoffman, host of the “Dates and Mates” podcast, answers the “Make Me Smart” question just in time for Valentine’s Day. Here’s everything we talked about today: “Tariffs on Trading Partners: Can the President Actually Do That?” from Council on Foreign Relations “One Response to Trump's Tariffs: Trade That Excludes the U.S.” from The New York Times “The United States has been disengaging from the global economy” from the Peterson Institute for International Economics “Protectionism 100 years ago helped ignite a world war. Could it happen again?” from The Washington Post “The US is one of the least trade-oriented countries in the world – despite laying the groundwork for today's globalized system” from The Conversation Got a question or comment for the hosts? The great 20th century philosopher Ferris Bueller once said “life moves pretty fast…if you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it”. I think of this wisdom a lot, especially when someone starts talking about, say, the music of the 1990s…my instinctive reaction is always the same… “yeah…the 90s…that was ten years ago, right?”. Obviously not…Nirvana's “Nevermind” still lives and that record is over 30 years old…all the legendary grunge artists are in their 50s and 60s if not dead…but so much of the music of the era is always in the air so it's not like it ever had a chance to be forgotten. I was in an airport recently—a big public space serving people of all ages and all backgrounds from around the world—and “Man in a Box” from Alice in Chains was playing on the p.a. And then there are all those moments in the grocery store when I hear music playing and think to myself “when did supermarket music get so cool?”. The truth is that this music is a lot older than my brain wants to believe…even though it still sounds fresh, so much has happened since those records came out. Life does move pretty fast…and it seems that it's moving faster with each passing day…and yeah, we do need to stop and looking around once in while because, let's face it, we're missing a lot of stuff. Now that we're 25 years deep into the 21st century, I feel the need to look around a lot more, if for no other reason, to remember and keep track of everything that we've seen in music…what have we missed?...what have we forgotten?...and if we're not acquainted with how we got here, how can we possibly be ready for what might be coming next. This is episode 3 of a series I call “the 100 greatest rock moments of the millennium so far”…let's see how many of these things you remember. Songs in this episode: Radiohead - Creep Tool - Tempest Imagine Dragons - Radioactive The Killers - Mr. Brightside Pantera - Walk Foo Fighters - Something From Nothing Nine Inch Nails - 34 Ghosts IV Sinead O'Connor - The Last Day of Our Acquaintance U2 - Even Better Than The Real Thing (live) Learn more about your ad choices.
