For the last six episodes, we've been previewing some of the titles on the list for Record Store Day 2024 (April 20). This week, we wind down this series with a very special exclusive interview with musician and composer Dhani Harrison, who also happens to be the president of Dark Horse Records, the label founded by his father, the late and beloved George Harrison. Dark Horse is partnering on several releases with RSD, including his dad's Electronic Sound and Wonderwall Music, Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros Rock Art and The X-Ray Style, and Dreamers In The Field, a collaboration between Dhani, Carmen Rizzo, and Tuvan throat-singers, Huun-Huur-Tu. We talk about all of this and so much more. Musician and producer James Saez talks about the RSD set that he restored and produced featuring the great Nat King Cole, recorded Live at The Blue Note in Chicago in the summer of 1953. Eric Levin at Criminal Records talks about Dreams Don't Cost A Thing, an all-day tribute to the recently departed Dexter Romweber (Flat Duo Jets) at their Atlanta store on Record Store Day. And RSD co-founder Carrie Colliton drops by with some last minute details from the RSD world. The Record Store Day Podcast is written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music. Playlist;(sintonía) DEX ROMWEBER “Andrieux boogie” (Good thing goin’, 2023)DEX ROMWEBER “Going down” (Good thing goin’, 2023)DEX ROMWEBER “Good thing goin’” (Good thing goin’, 2023)ENGELBERT HUMPERDINCK “Good thing goin’” (1969)DEX ROMWEBER “If you love me” (Good thing goin’, 2023)EDITH PIAF “Hhymne a l’amour” (1950)DEX ROMWEBER “Coming home” (Good thing goin’, 2023)JOHNNY HORTON “Coming home” (1956)DEX ROMWEBER “For all we know” (Good thing goin’, 2023)HAL KEMP and HIS ORCHESTRA “For all we know” (1934)DEX ROMWEBER “Shape of things to come” (Good thing goin’, 2023)DEX ROMWEBER “Twine time” (Good thing goin’, 2023)ALVIN CASH and THE CRAWLERS “Twine time” (1964)DEX ROMWEBER “Tell Laura I love her” (Good thing goin’, 2023)RAY PETERSON “Tell Laura I love her” (1960)BERT KAEMPFERT “I found my love” (1974)DEX ROMWEBER “I found my love” (Good thing goin’, 2023)Escuchar audio

In the early 1980s, Rick Miller formed the first lineup of Southern Culture on the Skids. Rick had grown up dividing time between his father's home in North Carolina and his mother's home in California. Mary Huff, from Roanoke, Virginia was a cello major who also played bass guitar. Upon hearing that Rick's band was looking for a replacement bass player, Mary joined and also recruited her long time friend Dave Hartman on drums. The trio of Rick, Mary and Dave would go on to become a much-loved, very fun and extremely talented band who have recorded and toured for several decades now. I've seen them play shows over the years, most recently at The Duck Room in St. Louis. And I had the pleasure of talking with Mary and Rick who called in from their rehearsal space and studio, The Kudzu Ranch.Photo by Ron Keith.Save on certified Pre-Owned iPhones, Androids, AirPods, Macs, Smartwatches, accessories, and more at Plug Tech. Welcome back from our crazy winter break ! Tonight we talk about all sorts of stuff - music, moving, stories,... it got a little weird - but it's us, so what do you expect? Playing for Change... look that up, listen, and buy a high quality t-shirt if you like the message and cause. We had a romp through "Eric's Playlist" - including The Gories, Welshy Arms, mygut, Flat Duo Jets, Giant Drag and many others. There was that interlude about El Carpe's "finding the family" story - and we'll keep you abreast of any developments there... Thanks for joining our bit of silly, and the traipsing through our musical shennanegans... We appreciate both of you, and hope we passed the audition. Pour me another Brother.

Well, we've finally gone and done it! After spending multiple episodes last season digging into Athens, GA music with some of the scene's most pivotal figures, the Randomizer has decided that it's time to dedicate an entire episode to the Classic (Alternative) City! We discuss so many greats in this episode, from REM, The B-52's, Pylon, Love Tractor, Oh-OK, Magnapop, Kilkenny Cats, Flat Duo Jets, Bar-B-Que Killers, The Method Actors, The Glands, Matthew Sweet, Of Montreal, The Michael Guthrie Band, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Side Effects, Green Thrift Grocery and a lot more. If you've got Georgia on your mind, then this is the episode for you. Oh, and did we mention Squalls? Because our Third Lad this week is another Athens luminary, Bob Hay from Squalls. Squalls played a unique brand of quirky pop that was equal parts Lovin' Spoonful, Grateful Dead and Talking Heads, and got many a person up on the dance floor from 1981 to 1989. They released four recordings and were included in the essential 1986 documentary on the scene, Athens, GA: Inside/Out. We are celebrating the release of Live From The 40 Watt, capturing Squalls at their best with 24 tracks recorded live at the legendary 40 Watt Club by soundman Pat "The Wiz" Biddle over five nights from 1983-85. The album is now available on CD, 2 LPs or digitally from Strolling Bones Records. More info: https://strollingbonesrecords.com On November 4, 2022, Propeller Sound Recordings will begin their reissue campaign of the Squalls studio catalogue, starting with a remastered and expanded full-length version of their 1984 self-titled debut EP. More info: https://propellersoundrecordings.com For all the latest Squalls news, visit http://squalls.band/ Special thanks to Pylon's Vanessa Briscoe Hay, Leigh Rixey from Strolling Bones Records and Angie Carlson from Propeller Publicity for their help in making this all come together!

“Themes From Venus" Love Tractor are an endless delight. The Athens, Georgia outfit got their start in the early 80s and they put out a handful of albums that still sound as fresh as ever. From This Ain't No Outerspace Ship to Around the Bend to Themes From Venus(which has been reissued and remastered and comes with bonus tracks), Love Tractor established themselves as one of the most creative, vital and intriguing bands out there. And mind you, this was during a time where there were a lot of creative, vital and intriguing bands around. Just in the town they hailed from alone, you had Pylon, the B52s, R.E.M., Flat Duo Jets—you get the idea. So, what do Love Tractor sound like? They sound like magic. An effortless blend of celestial surf, heavenly jangle, cosmic dance grooves and art school indie rock, Love Tractor remain one of the great treasures in modern music. And you know how music can be fixed to a timeline? Well, Love Tractor evade that timeline with unreasonable ease. They sound like they could have existed in any era, including ones that haven't even happened yet. They're smart, they're cool, they're inventive, they're melodic, and, to put it quite simply, they are an absolute joy. And so is this chat. Armistead and Mark offer a discursive and wildly entertaining dialogue that goes full speed ahead into the delicious unknown..... www.lovetractor.bandcamp.com https://www.instagram.com/lovetractorathens www.propellorsoundrecordings.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Little did anyone know that a two-piece garage rock band from Detroit would kick off a sonic revolution in 1999. The White Stripes debut of minimalist blues paired down to just vocals, guitar, and drums wasn't completely without precedent in the underground music scene with bands like the Flat Duo Jets and Bassholes preceding them. And while it would be a few years and a few albums before the mainstream caught on, the core elements of The White Stripes sound were there from the start. Mark got signed as a teen in 1966, left to play theatrical prog jazz in Indiana during college, had a spell in a "no wave" band in New York, and finally settled down in the '80s as an in demand producer and collaborator in New Orleans, working with groups like R.E.M., Flat Duo Jets, and John Scofield. He's only finished two solo albums but has a ton of archive recordings being released soon, and now plays guitar in a cajun band. The Third Men Podcast is excited to present an all-new extended interview with the legendary Dex Romweber! As founder and driving force behind the powerhouse group Flat Duo Jets, Dexter and his compatriots have lead the way for a return to the honesty, energy, soulfulness and singular vision of rock and roll music in the modern era. Icons like Neko Case, The Black Keys and Cat Power cite Dex as an inspiration, and they're not alone. When a young drummer named Jack White encountered the power and fury of Flat Duo Jets, the aspiring musician was moved to return to the guitar -- and what's more, moved to find a way to spread to others the kind of passion and energy that he himself had bore witness to. Dexter and Jack would meet and collaborate several times over the years, most notably on the only Blue Series single to feature White himself so prominently. We sat down with Dexter to walk through his storied career, and to get the scoop on some exciting NEW live performances that are sure to wow listeners as he has done so well for the past 35+ years. See Dexter perform in the new LIVE AT THE CAVE series, broadcast to ticket holders on Sunday, September 20th at 7pmEST -- with subsequent new shows lined up for every third Sunday of the month! Info on how to purchase tickets can be found on our website. We'd like to thank Mr. Romweber for the great conversation, and thanks to all of you for taking a listen. Hope you enjoy this discussion as much as we enjoyed recording it! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On this week's show, we do our part to keep a legendary NC music venue open, and give it up for a couple of records we dig that turn 10 years old. All this & much, much less!
Welcome back to the wonderful world of 1991, a year in which music creativity was in mass. Metallica, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2 all released ground-breaking albums, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. For this week’s #TuesdayTriplePlay, Craig highlights 3 albums that you might have overlooked in such a crowded field. School of Fish – School of FishSample Track: "King of the Dollar"Chris Whitley – Living with the LawSample Track: "Phone Call From Leavenworth"Flat Duo Jets – Go Go Harlem BabySample Track: “Go Go Harlem Baby”
In April 1998, legendary southern jam band Widespread Panic held a free open-air record release show in downtown Athens, Georgia, its homebase. No one involved could have known that the predicted crowd of twenty thousand would prove to be nearly five times that size. Author Gordon Lamb talks about how the show, now known as “Panic in the Streets” was a decisive moment in Athens music history.Lamb also takes us back into the rich Athens musical history, discussing how the small Southern college town birthed a highly influential and diverse music scene, including The B-52s, R.E.M., Pylon, Flat Duo Jets, Drive By Truckers, and, of course, Widespread Panic.
The final hit from a brilliant talent, a lovely interpretation from one of the biggest talents in popular music, and the fulfillment of the promise of an interesting song. It Doesn't Matter Anymore, originally by Buddy Holly, covered by Linda Ronstadt and by Flat Duo Jets. Outro Music is Fell in Love With a Girl by The White Stripes.

The Third Men Podcast is proud to present an all-new exclusive extended interview with legendary Detroit rock powerhouse Thomas Jackson Potter! Jack White fans know Tom for many projects over the years, such as membership in The Dirtbombs, prominent inclusion on Jack's Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit compilation and most notably as the frontman for Detroit's quintessential two-piece rock group BANTAM ROOSTER. Like the Flat Duo Jets before them, Bantam Rooster blazed the trail for two-piece potential in the rock world, and paved the way for The White Stripes in the years that followed. Tom's electrifying guitar sound is the perfect blend of high-energy rock and carefully crafted melody, and his extraordinary talents can be heard on countless records from the 80's, 90's and beyond - including the now-classic Ultraglide in Black LP from The Dirtbombs and Bantam's 2000 Sympathy release F*ck All Y'All. As friend and collaborator with artists such as Jack White, Mick Collins and Jim Diamond, Tom helped define the Detroit rock sound during the turn of the millennium and continues to push musical boundaries to this day with innovative groups like Seger Liberation Army and Choke Chains. We here at the Third Men podcast would like to thank Tom for joining us for one of the most fun, lively discussions we've ever had on the show and hope everyone has as much fun listening as we had interviewing! In 1984, right when the world was embracing the synthesizers and funny haircuts of New Wave, the Flat Duo Jets emerged from Chapel Hill, bringing everything back to basics - Dexter Romweber on vocals and guitar, and Chris “Crow” Smith on drums.Daniel 13 is issuing Wild Wild Love, a two-disc set that brings together the band’s first full length, 1990’s Flat Duo Jets, along with 1984’s cassette-only In Stereo EP and a second disc of bonus material. We talk with Romweber about the band’s origins, what led to the reissue of these recordings, and the band's appearances on both MTV and Late Night with David Letterman.
Hit the road with the Third Men Podcast! This week we follow along with The Dead Weather's inaugural tour to promote their debut album Horehound! For this all-new band on their debut outing, Jack took to the drum kit and held the beat down for bandmates Alison Mosshart, Dean Fertita and Jack "LJ" Lawrence. This time the road brought with it dramatic ups and downs, with audiences around the world equal parts enchanted and perplexed by this new darkly psychedelic concoction that graced the stage. Fans and critics scratched their heads at the growing number Jack White-adjacent bands, and pondered the fate of the White Stripes and The Raconteurs in the process - but one thing was undeniable: Horehound was an album with a mission. We give you all the details of that mission from opening curtain to closing encore! Plus Third Woman Kali Durga stops in to share HER tour memories in a special 2-for-1 "fell in love with a show" segment - Pokey Lafarge and the Flat Duo Jets! See you on the road! Dextra, Dextra, read all about it - this week the Third Men podcast is under the influence!Prepare yourself for a journey deep into the North Carolina woods for a dose of rock and roll courtesy of The Flat Duo Jets. When Dex Romweber and Chris “Crow” Smith launched the Jets in the early 1980's, they had no idea that their blend of 50's style roots rock and furious punker spit would have the impact that it did - and influence so many in their lifetime, including of course Jack White.Next to his delta blues idols, Jack often makes reference to the group's sound and presentation as one of his primary influences in not only forming the White Stripes, but in witnessing what a guitarist could be capable of on stage! We cover all this, plus a very special Third Man this week as we're joined by none other than FDJ contemporary Mike Cavallaro, AKA Johnny X (Sticks and Stones, Johnny X And The Conspiracy)! Mike gives us the low down on the rock and roll scene at the time of the Jets and some amazing stories of seeing the Jets live in their prime.
