We've arrived at the point of the year where parents need to make the decision if their preschooler is ready to commence primary school next year, or not. This is determined by the cut-off dates for your state or territory meaning that your child must turn five by that date to start school. This decision determines if your child will be among the older, more mature, taller students, and depending on their academic level can determine their level of confidence. Not only throughout primary but their secondary education also. So the decision is no mean feat If you're a parent with a child, especially a boy, who was born in one of the months before the cutoff date for enrolment at school and could do with some expert advice, this is for you. Today we welcome Andrew Oberthur, a father of two teenagers and a Primary School Principal with over 30 years' experience teaching and leading primary schools in Brisbane. Andrew is here to share expert age, gender, and school readiness tips to help you make informed decisions that are right for you. We ask Andrew questions including: In your article you see 5 assumptions on this topic, what are they? What are the qualities that would indicate a child is ready to cope with the rigours of primary school? Are age and gender enough to determine if a child is ready to start school? Can it be detrimental to a child if they start school before they are ready? If so, how? In your opinion, do you think the introduction of 3 year old kinder will help with increasing children's age-appropriate level of skills in communication, socialisation and independence? Or that is inbuilt in the child's and their personality which in turn can't be developed? Why can't Australian governance structures agree on when children should start school? What can parents do to assist in preparing their children to be most ready for school? Who is best placed to give parents advice about their child's readiness for school, especially at this time of the year? If my child, especially my son, is born just a month or less from cut off date, should they have a second year at Kindy? What are the 3 factors that may influence a child's communication, socialisation and independence? I understand there are many conditions that provide children with the experiences to have them prepared for school, what are they? “One day, a book distributor from overseas approached us and said ‘Hey, we have some books to clear'. We tried selling all the books for RM8 and it just went crazy.”  --- Andrew Yap    In this podcast episode, Andrew shares personal stories of how he started his entrepreneurial journey at 14 years old. Andrew talks about the Big Bad Wolf book sale and how he managed to sell books at such affordable prices. He shares the biggest challenges during the pandemic and how it has forced his company to grow stronger. He shares advice to people who want to start a reading habit as well as the future plans for Bookxcess and Big Bad Wolf.   To check out Book Excess and Big Bad Wolf as mentioned in the podcast, here are the links:  https://www.bookxcessonline.com/ https://bigbadwolfbooks.com/   As a self-made businessman, Andrew Yap, Managing Director of BookXcess, has built an alternative book empire from the ground up. For Andrew, accumulating profits is a distant goal to his personal desire to sell books at affordable prices, inculcate an enthusiasm for reading, especially among children, and raise the country's literacy level.  Yap is an ambitious risk-taker with a sharp eye for business, while his wife and partner, Jacqueline Ng, is the by-the-book, level-headed, strait-laced administrator. Together, the husband-and-wife team have made it their aim to make books more affordable and accessible to people worldwide. Due to his love for cars, Yap started off operating a petrol kiosk and car workshop and was sourcing for car magazines when he chanced upon an opportunity to sell remainder books (brand new, overprinted books unsold by publishers) in a 500 sq ft bookstore in 2006, known as BookXcess. Since then, BookXcess has grown by leaps and bounds, making a name for itself for providing English books across a variety of genres at 50% - 80% off regular prices. BookXcess opened its first outlet in Amcorp Mall in 2007 and has retail outlets at the Starling and Fahrenheit88. BookXcess has also been the organiser of the signature Big Bad Wolf Book Sale since 2009. Known as the World's Biggest Book Sale, the event runs for 24 hours for up to 11 days, offering millions of books at unbeatable prices.    If you enjoy the podcast, do leave us feedback on Apple Podcasts/ iTunes! Andrew is also the author of the book, The Law of Self Defense, which will educate you on the principles needed to keep you out of legal trouble. It can not be over emphasized, if you use lethal force you WILL go through some form of legal proceedings, even if it is "cut and dry."  As gun owners the majority of us do not focus on being prepared for the legal fight, this lack of education can certainly affect our lives drastically and can result in spending the rest of our lives in prison.  Also in this episode the crew discusses Legal Assistance memberships and their efficacy.  Lastly, in the accountability section Eric speaks on his recent experience in taking and graduating from the Rangemaster Instructor Development and Certification course.   For Andrew's wealth of online sources, and to access his Q and A sessions:  https://lawofselfdefense.com/ The Law of Self Defense book:  https://www.amazon.com/Law-Self-Defense-Indispensable-Citizen/dp/1943809143/ref=sr_1_2?crid=2HBRIXMZNPIXC&dchild=1&keywords=the+law+of+self+defense+by+andrew+branca&qid=1605902265&sprefix=the+law+of+self%2Caps%2C215&sr=8-2 The Drill of the Week -  Trident Concepts modified Navy qual 50 yards on 8 inch circle (pie plate, IDPA center, etc) - 3 mags of 5 rounds each.   On go, fire 5 rounds from standing - reload - 5 rounds kneeling - reload - 5 rounds prone.  Any miss adds 5 points, any second over par adds 2 points -  Any second under par is -1 point.  Everyone starts with 0 points - Marksman = 26 -40 points - Sharpshooter = 10 - 25 points - Expert less then 9 points.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv5epCk5KRY www.tenicor.com/  EVOSEC at checkout for 10% off. www.originmaine.com/ EVOSEC10 at checkout for 10% off.

This week we had the pleasure of sitting with one of our oldest friends, Andrew Hillam. It is always a surprising thing to chat in public and this conversation was no different. We expected that Russell and Andrew would slide into familiar scatological tropes but instead Andrew's insular and introspective nature shined through. We had a "quiet is the new loud" type of conversation with him on topics such as raising children in India, cooking in the flow state, and the comparison of playing music and chanting the shastras. Something that Andrew says creates a peculiar vibration in his skull. If you've had the pleasure of tasting Andrew Hillam's idlis then you know he has a special talent for cooking Indian food. However, that is not his only interest... Andrew is fascinated with all kinds of aspects of Indian culture. Besides being a Certified Advanced A Ashtanga Yoga teacher in the Mysore stye, he was a classical guitarist, who had previously pursued a PhD in immunology. if you can believe it! (He recommends wearing a mask by the way). Andrew is eccentric in his obsessively charming pursuit of perfection. For Andrew, diving deeply into Sanskrit chanting filled a space for musical expression and his love of sound. It contains both a devotional and philosophical layer that connects chanting to the practice of yoga. Chanting helps Andrew clear his subtle energy channels and increase that Sattvic quality (purity) within. Finding Ananta (infinity) in the space of the center of the heart, which is a birth place of sound and filled with the substance of bliss. The Mantra rises up from our awakened center. This was the profound heart of our conversation, learning that Andrew believes it is the friction between consciousness and matter that creates reality. Thus, music or chanting, is an opportunity to resolve the inherent conflict of our manifest reality. Yoga, says Andrew, is about relationship. God is what exists in all relationships, that's where God lives between people. The Finding Harmony Podcast is hosted, edited and produced by Harmony Slater and co-hosted by Russell Case. A big heart of thanks to our friends, family, and students from around the world, who've generously supported this podcast through your comments, sharing, and financial donations. Your contributions have allowed us to keep our podcast ad and sponsor free. Creating, editing and producing each episode takes a lot of time. It is a labor of love. On today’s show, we are happy to welcome someone we’ve wanted to have on for some time now, Andrew Wilkinson. He is currently a Managing Partner at Tiny Capital, as well as the Founder of MetaLab, which helped design Slack. Along with this, Andrew is also invested in a range of other companies. In this episode, we learn more about his incredible journey and how he grew a passion for tech and design into a range of flourishing businesses. Andrew also sheds light on his investing education and overcoming his initial reluctance to see the power of investments. For Andrew, being an entrepreneur is about freedom to create the life you want, and having time to pursue your interests, which is how he saw the value of delegating. This is not easy when you are starting out your entrepreneurial journey, as Andrew knows, but as a company scales, so too should the owner’s levels of delegation. We take a look at the types of businesses Tiny Capital is interested in and why they are only pursuing simple business models. Our conversation then takes a turn into a different interest of Andrew’s — subscription podcasts. We discuss why these are such effective, yet untapped income-generating models and Andrew shares some of the work they are doing in this space. We then circle back to Tiny and leadership more generally where Andrew unpacks the importance of incentives along with his characteristic lazy leadership style. Andrew’s self-reflexivity and ability to talk openly about his weaknesses is truly refreshing. This conversation was a great look into what it really means to be an entrepreneur. Drinking and alcohol intake can often be seen as a taboo topic. Binge drinking, over indulgence, and debauchery are typically what we think is "too much". But what if you're just having casual drinks everyday? Is that such a bad thing? For Andrew, it's not that it was bad, but he realized that it wasn't serving him. There are many reasons he quit alcohol: Health and well being, realizing it wasn't pushing him towards his goals, but the large picture was that he realized that his kids were watching his every move. As such, he decided to quite once and for all. For Andrew, it wasn't really a long process. He read a book and within a few days and made the decision to stop drinking. There were awkward moments along the way including fear of judgement from his friends, being in a sales culture where that behaviour can be encouraged, and even growing up in Milwaukee culture which is heavily influenced by the beer industry. But he decided to stick with his guns and document his journey of quitting alcohol. In our conversation we talk about his grandfathers impact on his life, why he chose to quit alcohol, fatherhood, what leadership is, and how anyone can take active steps to take a step beyond their vice. About Andrew: In a little over a decade Andrew Metz has risen from an entry level lead generation position to vice president, overseeing all new business generation and a team of 30 at a SaaS based InsureTech company in Milwaukee, WI. Andrew’s tremendous hard work, desire for continuous learning and improvement, generosity and humility have earned him recognition as a catalyst for growth within his organization. Metz invests in the people around him and inspires and encourages them to attain their own personal bests. His willingness to share the early lessons of his business career and personal mistakes make him a remarkable public speaker. His abilities have resulted in regular speaking requests from UWM’s Lubar School of Business, Marquette University’s School of Communication and local high schools. His generosity and accomplishments post-graduation from UW-Milwaukee has earned him “Graduate of the Last Decade” award from his alma mater. How To Build Rapport By Asking Directed, Relevant Questions    For many salespeople, building rapport is a skill that needs to be learned. It's not always easy for sales reps to build relationships with potential or existing clients.  Asking direct and relevant questions is a great launch fine-tuning the art of building rapport. In this episode we learn more about how to do this well.    Andrew Sletter has been in the same company, the Window and Door Store for 10 years. Their company sells windows and doors with a focus on in-home sales.  They work directly with the consumer and are with their customers for every step of the process, including installation.  The company's office is located in Bismarck, North Dakota and they handle the North Dakota and Western Minnesota market.    The salesman's profile Andrew doesn't see himself as a true salesman. He believes that many salespeople are doing themselves a disservice by trying to fit into a particular profile. Andrew isn't an influencer or a promoter.  Based on his DISC personality profile, he is more of the perfectionist individual. In his career, he's seen all different types of personalities become successful in sales. Many sales reps feel the pressure to become somebody they're not but as a sales manager, Andrew knows salespeople just need to be true to who they are and learn the skills needed to have a great career.     Though Andrew didn't set out to become a sales leader, he honed his skills to become successful. Daniel Pink, the author of the book To Sell is Human, writes that surprisingly, the best sales people aren't the extroverts or the introverts. It's the ambiverts that make it to the top of the chain. Why? The ambiverts tend to have the characteristics of boths and it serves them well.  If you aren't an ambivert, though, take heart. Andrew knows anyone who can hold a conversation with somebody has what it takes to become a great salesperson.    Building the trust  An important skill that salespeople need to have is the ability to know when and if a product or service is a good fit for a potential client. With direct-to-consumer businesses this is especially important. Building trust and rapport in the early stages of inquiry will help with this evaluation. If done correctly, not only will this prospect become a new client, there is an opportunity to develop the relationship into a life-long customer.    Building rapport is about having trust between two people.  If a salesperson states their product is the best in the industry, but hasn't built trust, the consumer can determine very quickly they don't want to work with that individual.  The consumer today is very savvy. They've usually done the research even before approaching the salesperson. They already know about the product and the industry and will purchase with the sales rep who aligns with their value system. It is up to the salesperson to uncover those values in order to close the sale.    Building Rapport  Rapport is more than just value-based selling. For Andrew, it's also about authentic selling. The number one deciding factor of whether or not a consumer is going to purchase is the credibility of the salesperson. Credibility and rapport first, product or service second. It's the job of the salesperson to uncover the prospect's values because if the values aren't in alignment, the ability to close is greatly diminished.  Selling to the modern consumer requires wisdom and discovery. The sales goal has to be secondary to the customer's needs.     The credibility of the salesperson is #1 priority whether or not people buy. #SalesCredibility   Discovering the value  From the beginning a salesperson needs to have a conversation with the prospect. Allow them to tell their story because it's their story that needs to be heard. Be ready with a set of questions to ask to every client.    Ask directed and relevant questions. What are their fears, concerns,  projections? This exchange helps the salesperson determine the client's motivation and it gives the consumer the confidence their needs are being heard. When values align, the closing rate increases dramatically.    Keep building rapport through the pandemic  Building rapport is especially critical in the season we're in, when people are dealing with so much uncertainty.  Clients need to feel they're part of a conversation and a team. As salespeople, we support our families by helping our clients solve their problems. We're all consumers.  Let's be the people we'd want to purchase from ourselves.    “How To Build Rapport By Asking Directed, Relevant Questions” episode resources Don't rush the process. Too often a salesperson tries to determine the outcome of the sales without first building trust. Put in the time and ask direct and relevant questions.  If you are interested in more sales stories, you can talk to Donald about it. Seeing that he made a difference drives him to be create more impact for more people. Most are not happy with their jobs because there is no freedom. They don’t control their time and/or they can’t speak their minds. Not that entrepreneurs have control over everything. But they can do things differently. They are their own bosses. In coaching, they won’t tell you what to do, you find out things yourself. In mentoring, the mentor works alongside the client. Wealth is not money. When you define wealth as something that can help you better yourself. It’s not just about the prosperity of money. There should also be prosperity in other aspects of your life. Andrew tries to make everything perfect. No mistakes. If there is something to be improved, even a small thing, continue tweaking until you get to near perfect, if not perfect. Respect people who you’re in business with. There should be no discrimination, so you can provide quality services to everyone. It’s unpredictable what happens in the UK market. So as much as possible, be prepared on whatever happens. Check your streams of income. Plan so you or your business stay afloat any unforeseen circumstance. BEST MOMENTS “I wasn’t about the money. Hi everyone. For anyone that wants to know how the colour called Banana looks like. This is the interview giving the answer. For this episode I got to interview Andrew Newman, Author and Founder of Conscious Bed Time Stories and healer. Andrew is known for: Writing Poems and books Being a healer, and For his work in mens groups His creative powers are writing and wood working but has not considered himself being creative until his late 20is. The books are designed to help parents and children to change gears and connect before going to sleep. To do so psychology and energy healing approaches are used. “These stories have wise, lovable characters who model real-life situations to your children, showing them how to resolve challenges before they arise. They also have easy breathing meditations and activity pages that help parents and children connect. “ So far he has published 13 Children Books and another 3 books are on the way. Born and raised into a Jewellery Family, in South Africa during the apartheid period. Andrew had his share of laking emotional training, hugs and love from his family and going in a men's only school did not help him perfecting his emotions and interaction with others. In his mid 20is he realised that there is more and started searching for healing himself. Books, weekend courses and even a university degree as healer from the Barbara Brennan School of Healing in the US were some of the things he did. Andrew has been open and vulnerable in his storytelling and lets us in how he then got to write poems and started publishing them. We do not only learn about his path but also about how we can connect with each other using the snuggle-breath. An Advice took and recommends: - From Mike Dooley the author of “Notes from the universe”. If you don't know what to do, do the three least shitty things. You never know what door might open. For Andrew this was to move from Tennessee to California. On the road the Mindvalley Quest “Little Humans” was published and before he knew it he had a mail box full of emails and requests. Such as from “The Oliver Schirach Show”. Stay open. Call for Action: Write a poem and share it with someone or gift it. If you feel strong and courageous read it aloud to someone else. Ask for understanding. Inform that this poem is new and very precious to you. So that you won't be criticised for it. Andrew Speers, Director of Product and Innovation at RBS, is passionate about user experience and developing customer centric propositions. In this podcast he discusses the important role blockchain can help as an enabler of other technologies to delivering great user experiences within the financial industry and beyond.   What is blockchain? Andrew recognises that there is no standardised definition to blockchain and his definition comes from as a business user instead of a technologist, engineer or coder. Blockchain is just a distributed ledger technology (DLT). That DLT sits on top of the internet. It is a network of nodes. A node has a unique identity and it stores data.   Applications are built on that network like apps in the app store. Nodes can participate in one or many apps, depending on the blockchain. Andrew reminds us of a few more truth regarding DLTs: Not every DLT needs a blockchain Not every DLT has a crypto asset or crypto currency attached to it Not every DLT   Disruption within a fragment financial industry Consumer Connectivity Insights 2018 reveals over 69 percent of global consumers would consider changing their bank, retailer or insurance provider due to a disconnected experience. For Andrew this has happened due capacity utilisation within financial services firms. The financial industry is fragmented and is being disrupted. It isn’t facing disruption it is being disrupted. The issue at hand is that the banking industry is focused on products along lines of technical expertise rather than building products along the user journey or the user experience. If an individual or a business has a multi-product need it fragments as it moves within the bank. The client first goes through an originations function, then into the credit assessment function, then into operations and/or bespoke product knowledge such FX trading finance, insurance risk and others. Complicated clients with complicated needs have to go through a number of different silos within a financial services firm which creates a hugely disconnected experience for them. DLT is coming to a maturity point now where it's helping financial firms to knit some of this together to create client centric user experiences by having a distributed architecture with identifiable data from corporates. These can be seamlessly stitched together and bespoke user propositions can be created. Clients can now have a little of FX attached to a little bit of credit assessment, attached to a little bit of trade finance with the exchange of data can be automatically transacted on the distributed ledger thanks to smart contracts, thus improving the user experience.   Challenger banks and DLT Andrew recognises that these type of challenger banks are doing some great work. For specific parts of their business they are seen as challengers. RBS looks to embed the existing or incumbent technologies they’re using to catch up a little bit or to stop them taking transaction and their clients off the periphery as they build scale. RBS is looking to DLT and how DLT allows banks to attach identity to client data and to their transactional data. It allows RBS to develop solutions with greater efficiencies as RBS does not need to constantly exchange information between the client and itself and their different departments internally, those fragmented silos that were mentioned earlier on. RBS doesn’t have to process, recheck and reprocess those same data points continuously. It also means that for DLT clients sitting on a shared protocol such as R3’s Corda Enterprise, who have 57 other banks on their network, then theoretically they are accessible by anybody else which creates further user experience benefits and efficiencies as well.   Examples of blockchain initiatives in the financial sector that generate better user experience Identity Billions of people and corporations have an identity.

Both he and Jenny realized the lack of quality swim lessons in the area and using his degree in finance from Michigan State University, and her background as a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifier in swimming, the two set out to create a swim school that was fun, approachable and focused on water safety. Now with 86 schools nationwide (and one in Canada), following its foray into franchising in 2009, Goldfish Swim School is on track for continued advancement with 119 additional locations in development. Andrew McCuiston, President of Goldfish Swim School, joined his brother (Chris) and sister-in-law, Jenny, in their mission in 2008. [17:08] For Andrew, one of the biggest challenges he faced when joining the Goldfish team was operating within a family business to a certain degree. [21:03] Chris reflects on the benefits of how they stood firm on their beliefs and values through the franchising process which paid off in the end despite some frustrating growth periods where they could have easily folded and made concessions. [24:13] Goldfish’s current preference is to have multi-unit franchisees that has lived and grown up in a specific market and can build a team within the area. [25:37] After years of working remotely, Goldfish just established their corporate headquarters which makes business operations easy to carry out and ultimately better services the franchisees. [27:12] Goldfish currently has 89 locations open with over a hundred more currently signed on to open locations in the future. Andrew Peart | John 1:1-14  "Some are called to mission overseas, and some are called to mission over the road." For Andrew and Lisa that call was to serve with the Anglican Church in Bolivia, with which Christ Church has built a growing link over the last few years. Jesus came to share the life of God with us, and wherever we are our role is to do the same. Andrew explains how that life has been experienced in his own family, through both loss and extraordinary healing. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Never Eat Lunch Alone Andrew Lauver’s grandfather always said, “never eat lunch alone.” A captivating thought that Andrew saw epitomized in a John F. Kennedy story of a tour of NASA, where he asked the janitor, “What do you do?” The janitor’s response? “Send rocket ships to space.” (https://youtube.com/aggrad) It’s the age old statement that is sometimes forgotten in the modern activities of today; every person, from the janitor to the CEO, matters in the mission of the company. An Iowan farmer, Andrew has been raised with the morals and values of small rural communities, but has capitalized on networking relationships to continue to chase his dreams of being a leader in agriculture and named to the AgGrad 30 Under 30 list. (https://youtube.com/aggrad) Current Professional Role: Manager of Industry Relations at Syngenta North America Focused on commodity associations and working with the grower leaders of these associations is how Andrew spends his professional career. It involves agriculture policy, discussion on issues and seizing opportunities in agriculture, and the efforts of an annual week long media, public speaking, technology and issues training seminar called Leadership at its Best. Being able to have comfortable conversation between both business leaders and growers, bridging the gap between the two, is imperative to his role. (https://youtube.com/aggrad) There isn’t a direct path to this position, it’s based more on the route taken and efforts made in the field to connect with industry professionals and growers alike. For Andrew, that route started at three years-old, bouncing in the buddy seat of the tractor with his father and grandfather; both men that he highly respects. Knowing that the family farm wouldn’t be able to sustain four families and three generations, he earned his undergrad at Iowa State University, then a masters in Agriculture Business from Kansas State and now he’s currently enrolled in Law School at Drake University, pursuing a masters of jurisprudence in agriculture and sustainability. Tips for building a relationship with someone who has more experience than you: Be careful of how you present yourself when you stand up and talk. You can always control what you wear; dress professionally. Come with talking points prepared for that meeting. Communicate the context of the agenda with the host of the meeting. Do your homework. Talk internally with colleagues with more experience than you. Over-prepare. When you don’t know, don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t know, but I will check and get back to you.” Recognize where your experience falls in line and find the best time and way to share. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Staying Motivated “As I keep moving through my career, I continue to remind myself that I am a farm kid from Lake City, Iowa. I always reflect back on those days in 4H exhibiting cattle. My father always told me that the calves eat breakfast before you do. It was important to feed them before I ate because they couldn’t feed themselves. That’s something that I have carried with me everywhere I go - executing on what I say I am going to do; if I say I’m going to do it, I will get it done. I never want to be more than one step from the farm.” “Where are you going?” “I’m going to see you Senator!” As a junior in college, Andrew was part of a group that started the Iowa State Corn Growers Association, a college chapter to the Iowa Corn Growers Association. Heading towards Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., Andrew saw Senator Charles Grassley eating an apple, sitting on a bench and reading a newspaper in the Des Moines, Iowa airport. (https://youtube.com/aggrad) “Surely he’s sitting first class,” Andrew though when he saw him. Boarding the plane, as Andrew went to place his bag in the overhead carrier, he realized he was assigned to sit right next to Senator Grassley....

But today I'll be talking with the first musician to come on the podcast! My guest Andrew Brantley is the lead singer and guitar player for The Orange Constant, a vintage rock/jam band based in Athens, Georgia. . I got to meet Andrew, as well as the rest of the band, a while back when they came into my city to perform. After talking with Andrew and the guys, and getting a behind-the-scenes look of the show. I was amazed by their work ethic and their dedication to their craft. Each of them has come a long way. . For Andrew, his passion for music began when he was in high school. After becoming more proficient with the guitar, as well as with song writing, he began to study music more in depth while in college. It was then when he started meeting the other guys, and The Orange Constant was formed. From there they went on to perform in venues all around the southeastern United States. Expanding their reach as time went on. . In this episode Andrew tells us about how he came into music. As well as the challenges faced in the early days of traveling and performing with the band. We also discuss how to maintain discipline when building your craft. Why you should be prepared for set backs, and how they can benefit you. And why you should be patient and persistent during whatever journey you set out for in life. . How can we become more like God the Father in our healing? Andrew talks through his childhood and some challenging deep issues that required Andrew to make sense of his faith and his family. We discuss some of the pressures being in positions with high expectations. For Andrew, the path forward was by “slowly dying.” The statistics behind pornography are staggering with evangelical men and pastors. However, there is an alternative and it takes losing yourself to come to wholeness. Andrew breaks down three roles; the runaway son, the elder brother, and God the Father. My first interview with a Fuller was Andrew’s daughter Kayla, who is giving Millennials a fabulous reputation in business. Andrew will be the first to tell you that entrepreneurship feels like his legacy. I was so excited to hear stories of his grandparents and great-grandparents, all small business owners. Andrew is a firm believer in letting the child lead when it comes to choosing a sport. When his son decided to specialize in high school and give up basketball for a few years, Andrew didn't fight him, even though he disagreed. For Andrew, parenting a "peak performer" was about continually "letting go" of his own expectations or desires to help give room for his son to grow and find his own path. As Andrew tells it, it's not about giving up parental authority or responsibility, but checking your own pride and ambition to help your child find their own way. "Some parents take it WAY too serious. At a young age, they think if their kid is the best, he's going to be the best all the time."

102 Developing Company Culture - Professional Movers URL:  http://www.julieannsullivan.com/developing-company-culture/   Great business leaders are found everywhere--office buildings, warehouses, stages and concert halls. Today you’ll hear from a leader in an industry you might not expect: professional moving. I’m happy to bring you this interview with Andrew Androff of Professional Movers. What intrigued me about his company is that his management team all began as movers. For Andrew, although a college education is supported, those that have vested their time and grown within the company, possess the qualities to become leaders too. Professional Movers has created a culture that has been voted the Best Moving Service for five consecutive years by their community. Their Company Manifesto acts as their Culture Compass. Let’s find out how he does that. More about Professional Movers: Professional Movers is a Residential and Office Moving Company that does things so positively different, they forever alter a customer’s expectations for the better. Since 1978, they have redefined the moving industry by creating a company-wide culture that values a compassionate connection with their customers. they take the time to understand their customers’ needs and provide solutions that saves money, relieves their stress, and transforms their perception of what to expect from a professional moving company. More from Andrew about how Professional Movers developed its company manifesto: We invited our Team Members to put their individual fingerprint on the development of our Company Manifesto. We began by providing each with a document that explained what a company manifesto was and provided examples of other really emotionally positive company manifestos done well. We then provided a questionnaire that asked them specific questions about their role in the company. We placed a manifesto box in our office and asked the team members to anonymously submit their completed questionnaires. We then utilized their answers to develop our company manifesto. We had the company manifesto printed into a really large design board and mounted it on our office wall for all to see. The Company Manifesto acts as our Culture compass. It reminds us of the fabric of our organization and the direction and goals we are collectively working towards. You’ll discover: Why a company manifesto is important, and how team members helped develop it. How the company is positively impacting the public’s view of their whole industry. Practical ways they address a customer’s pain points. Why they view their work as a “craft.” Specific things they do that other movers don’t do. Practical ideas Andrew uses to engage employees and develop their company culture. How a simple reminder on the back wall of each truck reminds movers how they can make a difference. How the company’s leaders spot positive attributes of each team member and help develop their leadership. Why their different way of doing business has benefited the company.   Interview Links & Other Resources  ProfessionalMovers.com Follow Professional Movers on Twitter Businesses That Care on C-Suite Radio iTunes - Subscribe, Rate and Review

Rooster Radio - Stories & Insights from Entrepreneurs and Leaders in Business, Health, Tech & More

In a change up for Rooster Radio listeners, James Begley interviews his co-host Andrew Montesi about podcasting. We are in the midst of a podcasting revolution - around 60 million people listen to podcasts every month in the US, and in Australia soon 1 in 2 people will be tuning in to the medium. Early Rooster Radio listeners who have been on the journey with us will recall the show's early, crudely produced episodes (which are still available on our episode list *cringe*) and how the program continues to evolve. Listen Money Matters - Free your inner financial badass. All the stuff you should know about personal finance.

Becoming an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Running and growing a business can be challenging – that’s why about 90 percent of all new businesses fail.  Since the odds are stacked against you, it takes hard work and perseverance to achieve success.  Whether you have a business or looking to start a one, it’s important to listen to your peers and mentors. Some lessons you will have to learn on your own but some small business tips you can learn from others.  Collectively, Thomas and Andrew have ten years of experience under their belt running small businesses. Today they will share their most valuable lessons and small business tips.  Don’t quit your day job.  When you are just starting out, bringing in a consistent profit month after month can be challenging and stressful. You don’t want to be the position where you’ll do anything for a quick buck.  You want to focus on building something that will make you $2000 passively everything month down the road and not worry about making $100 to survive the week. “A successful business is a marathon, not a sprint.” Keeping your day job until your business is financially stable will reduce pressure so you can focus on what matters. Remember – it’s not how you start the race, it’s how you finish it. For Andrew, constraint breeds creativity. Having limited hours to get work done forces him to do the things that matter and make the most out of his hours. Study the pros. You can read all the books on what you need to do to grow a successful business but what will push the needle is to study what the pros do. Find people inside and outside of your industry that you admire and dig into what they are doing with their businesses. For example, let us say you are super inspired by Pat Flynn and looking to run a successful online business. He has some great content online outlining what to do but go beyond that. Study what the pros do more than what they teach. Analyze their code, writing styles, videos, etc. Of course, don’t blatantly rip people off but take influence and make it your own. You will eventually develop your own style. First, get inspired. Improve 1% every month. Give yourself realistic growth goals. Growing 1% every month doesn’t sound like much, however, after a year you will have increased 12.68% and 26.97% in the second year. Just a little bit of growth consistently will start an exponential growth cycle. Just because you are improving 1% every month doesn’t me that every single thing you make will grow that one percent. That’s why you need to follow The Equal-Odds Rule. Thomas has an excellent video on it. Watch it. He believes if you want to make things that are amazing, things that become fruitful and well-known then you have to make a lot of things. The more you do, the more you will fail, and the more you succeed. Throw things at the wall. You never know. Don’t put yourself in the box. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do or what people expect you to do. Don’t ever feel you need to fit into a box. Put your weirdness into your work” that weirdness sets you apart. There are not a limited amount of opportunities. There are an unlimited number, but if you chase every opportunity, you will never make meaningful progress on the ones that matter. Only pursue opportunities that help you achieve your key goals. Say no to everything else. Also, stop thinking all the good ideas are taken. It will just paralyze your creativity. Your idea most likely has already been done. "Once you get into early stage companies, it’s hard to imagine doing anything else.” “It’s a hard road, there’s a lot of days when I wake up and think, "Man I wish I could just go work for a big company and cash a check and I’d be fine," but it’s just not the way I’m wired.” - Andrew Dumont About: Andrew Dumont- Entrepreneur in Residence at Betaworks Overview: Andrew is a determined and intelligent young man who has a passion for building businesses. He shares his experiences with starting the company Stride, and what he is doing now at Betaworks to prepare for future entrepreneurial work. Andrew Dumont   Highlights: Background: Andrew is originally from Seattle, but now living in New York working at Betaworks. He came to NY to elevate his entrepreneurial game and be surrounded by people who are always on the go. Betaworks: It's essentially like a startup studio and is structured by 2 sides. The first side is an investment side. They are currently involved in about 15-20 seed investments with about $100-$250k  per investment. Some of the companies Betaworks has invested in are: Kickstarter, Tumblr, and many others. Right now, they are investing in ProductTime. The other side of the company is the studio portion. Betaworks hires entrepreneurs to help with the media business and with what new media will look like. They build new products that will be compelling in that space. Some of those products include: Chart B, Dots (iPhone game), and Dig. It’s not a traditional type of company- they like to start their employees from scratch. They go out and find talent within the community they’ve built. They’re going to start a new program called “Hacker” where they work with a creator that builds a new thing within 3 months. This new program is very much like the film studios in Hollywood. Daily Workload: Andrew went out to New York because a good friend was an investor with Betaworks. Andrew was very interested in the business model. He was ready to do his own thing, and by coming to Betaworks, was given a good opportunity to do his own thing at a great company. When he started there, Andrew spent a lot of time on helping platforms like Insta Paper, Dig, and Pancho. His role was to solve some of the problems that those applications were experiencing. Andrew’s Goal: His next step is to determine if Betaworks will be the right fit for helping him start his own company. Previous Startup (Stride): Stride was a company/app that Andrew co-founded. It was built it in about 3 weeks. Andrew and his team built Stride as a light weight CRM application. The idea behind Stride is that salesforce was a really complicated tool,  so they wanted an app that focused more on the simple- more about the stages of where the sales were at. Stride was a completely bootstrapped company. It made about $20k in revenue in about year and a half (side project). Once it started getting bigger, they were trying to determine if it was something they wanted to pursue, but Andrew felt like the market was completely capped, so they decided to sell the growing company to Neil Patel and Heaton Shaw. Andrew is good friends with Neil Patel, and he really trusted in their ability to scale and build products. It was a very smooth process selling it to them, which Andrew was grateful for,  because they already had customers using their application. He wanted to make sure that those customers were taken care of and knew that Neil and Heaton would be the right fit. Andrew’s Passion: Out of all the things there is to do in the entrepreneurial world, Andrew really enjoys businesses over consumer products. He states, "They aren’t as sexy but they capture my interest." In the future he'd like to do something similar to Stride but a little more aggressive. Work-Life Balance: Andrew says that you have to understand that you’re sacrificing a lot of the work-life balance in the early stages. It takes more than 40 hours a week. You have to do certain things each week that make it so you don’t burn out. To keep a balance, Andrew tried to shut off and be unplugged on the weekends. Every year, he makes sure to do at least a week or two of being completely unplugged from the world. He says, "There’s no doubting the fact that it’s [being an entrepreneur] hard work, but it’s just part of the deal." Common Mistakes: Andrew has made plenty of mistakes through his own journey, but says that’s how you learn. "You need to fail to really understand things." Every single company he’s been apart of started small. Many of them failed, but some of them did grow into large, successful companies. Seismic was a great example of company that had too much cash, and pivoted too often. There’s a right time to pivot and a wrong time to pivot. When things aren’t working, a companies' natural inclination is to pivot, which can ultimately destroy what is trying to be built. Andrew shares that it's important to have a hunch as an entrepreneur. You have to believe in something that others may not. There’s a lot of reasons why a company can fail, and it’s usually more than just one element that causes the fall. Advice for Entrepreneurs After They Fail: It’s hard not to get down on yourself when things don’t work, but you have to understand that it’s part of the anomaly. You have to reclassify your definition of success. It’s a constant battle to readjust. Depression in startups is a real thing. So, a lot of it is making your mind stronger. For Andrew, preparing his mind means putting things in perspective and setting very clear goals. Don’t get distracted by what’s going on in other companies around you. Take Away: In order to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to be willing to put in overtime. 40 hours a week isn't going to cut it. Like Andrew, you may even have to start something on the side while working a mainstream job until you can launch. Even though it's not going to be easy, it's worth it.
