Following on from the success of her debut EP ‘Existence Is Temporary', British progressive metal guitarist/vocalist Grace Hayhurst has returned with her debut full length album ‘The World Is Dying'. The album is set for release on June 27th, 2025. Starting life as a pianist before moving onto French Horn, performing with various orchestral ensembles across Europe, at age 18, Grace began dabbling on guitar with the likes of Yes and Opeth acting as her gateway drug. She proudly composed and recorded the bulk of the instruments, with other notable featured musician Robin Johnson of Kyros fame composing and playing the drum parts. Grace hopes there is something for everyone on this record, for fans of riffs, synths, slap bass, string quintets, French Horn duets, or drum solos that feel just very slightly too long. It permits a moment of reflection on our lives, how we interact with the world, the planet, society, and each other. Which is something we delve into here with Grace, as well as finding out more about her musical journey, the work that has gone into this record, taking over Sensible Music Studios (alongside Shelby Logan Warne), playing in a Rammstein tribute band (Rammlied), and so much more. Tonight's Jazz Feature spotlights a unique talent who explored various styles of Jazz throughout a long career. Jimmy Giuffre played all the saxophones and most famously, the clarinet. In his early years his clarinet style in which he focused on the lower register of the clarinet (the chalumeau register) was his unique achievement and hallmark. He later explored the clarinet's full register when he turned to more free form Jazz. Of the many styles he performed, tonight's Jazz Feature focuses on his first trio called The Jimmy Giuffre Three. It had Giuffre on tenor and baritone saxophones plus his low register clarinet with the great Jim Hall on guitar and bassist Ralph Pena. This living room sized band explored Giuffre's compositions and dipped into blues and folk music. It's first recording done in Los Angeles on December 3 & 4 1956 was an early masterpiece and issued by Atlantic Records. There was really nothing on the Jazz horizon like this music at this time and this album was greeted warmly by the critics and fans. Enjoy The Jimmy Giuffre Three as tonight's Jazz Feature.

Jakob Alder lebte vom 23.5.1915 – 6.4.2004.

NPR's Book of the Day
'The Instrumentalist' is a story about music, imagination and Anna Maria della Pietà

Harriet Constable learned a lot about the real life of Anna Maria della Pietà — that she grew up in an orphanage, that she was a star violinist and a favored student of Antonio Vivaldi. But in her new novel, The Instrumentalist, Constable also merges fact with fiction to tell the story of Anna Maria's synesthesia and musical talents. In today's episode, she speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about Anna Maria's life, the challenges and excitement of the classical music world at the time, and what we make of Vivaldi today. Anna Maria della Pieta. Chances are you've heard of Antonio Vivaldi, but you've never heard of Anna Maria or her fellow female orphans at the Ospedale della Pieta, which in 18th century Venice boasted the greatest orchestra in the world. Without these ridiculously talented girls and women, The Four Seasons might not exist.  Harriet Constable's debut historical fiction, The Instrumentalist, is the story of Anna Maria, Vivaldi's favourite student and violin prodigy, shining a light on the women and girls we should have been talking about for the last 300 years. The Instrumentalist is published by Bloomsbury on August 15.  @HarriConstable – Instagram @HConstable – X Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In early 18th century Venice, the Ospedale della Pietà took in abandoned baby girls through a tiny gap in the wall.  In addition to ensuring the girls' survival, the orphanage employed one of the world's greatest ever composers - Antonio Vivaldi - to train the girls in music.  One of his pupils, Anna Maria della Pietà, became his star protegé and went on to a phenomenal career as a violinist and the maestro's biggest rival.Anna Maria's largely forgotten life is compellingly recovered and reimagined in this summer's most eagerly anticipated historical novel, The Instrumentalist by Harriet Constable. She joins Professor Suzannah Lipscomb to talk about how she discovered and brought Anna-Maria's heart-rending story to life.Presented by Professor Susannah Lipscomb. The researcher is Alice Smith and the producer is Rob Weinberg. The senior producer is Anne-Marie Luff."Et in Terra Pax" from Vivaldi's Gloria in D used with the kind permission of the Girl Choir of South Florida.
