Born on June 3, 1982 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Davey Jones brings the rich musical heritage of the Deep South to every stage he steps on. A true multi-instrumentalist, Jones is best known for his searing guitar playing but also masters drums, piano, bass, organ, and more — often performing and recording nearly every instrument on his releases himself. Drawing from Southern Rock, traditional Blues, Gospel, and Country, he has forged a distinct and powerful sound that pays homage to the greats while remaining unmistakably his own. With more than 30 years of writing and performing, Jones has built a reputation for high-energy, soulful shows that connect deeply with audiences. From his early days playing in Southern churches and gospel groups to rocking county and blues stages across the region, his journey has led him to share bills and stages throughout the United States. His dynamic live performances and genuine connection with fans have become his signature — a philosophy best captured in his own words: “It's simply not enough to put on a good show, you've got to involve the audience and make them feel like the show is dedicated to them. Because, at the end of the day, this show is for them.”Jones' talent has been recognized with accolades including “Most Talented Musician” for the state of Louisiana in 2000. His playing draws favorable comparisons to blues and rock icons such as Tab Benoit, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Chuck Berry. His music has received airplay on “Blues Legends” radio and major blues playlists, further cementing his place among today's most compelling blues and roots artists.Whether headlining clubs, festivals, or theaters, Davey Jones delivers the kind of authentic, roof-raising performances that remind fans why they fell in love with the blues.https://daveyjonesmusic.com

Multi-instrumentalist Julieta Venegas Lets Go of the Past, In-Studio

Mexican singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas is considered a living legend among her peers. But when it's just her and her favorite musical instruments, like the piano, the accordion, or the Venezuelan cuatro guitar, her artistry is just as raw, honest, and vulnerable as it was in her early days in music.  On her new record, Norteña, Venegas acknowledges the fact that none of us are as innocent as we used to be. Missing that pre-internet naïveté and going back to her roots played a big part in her writing process. Still, she's not one to live in the past. As she puts it: “You have to let go of things… Even the things you think are really the best moments of your life are not going to be, because then you're going to keep on going, and you're going to find other best things in your life.” This art of being at peace with present time is most apparent on this edition of Soundcheck, where she performs two singles from her new album, as well as a beloved song from two decades ago. In the studio, Venegas is known to fuse pop, rock, and regional Mexican music with well-thought-out and expansive arrangements. But here, she picks up a different instrument for each song, singing and playing organically, as she injects her momentary emotions into every note. (- Sırma Munyar) Setlist: 1. La Línea  2. Teri Bracken's career as Brontë Fall began almost accidentally. The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs had always been a music obsessive, dreaming of forming her own bands and playing on stages. While working as the “door girl” at an indie music venue in Chicago, a chance opportunity allowed her to book her first gig as an artist. She quickly came up with a band name (honoring her favorite writers, the Brontë sisters), compiled all the original songs she had, and never, ever looked back. Bracken's road to acclaimed songwriter began in childhood, when she picked up piano at age 7. Classical violin lessons soon followed, and eventually she was tapped as the singer/violinist in a college rock band with a group of nineties rock loving frat boys. After leaving the guys, she further pursued her passion for violin playing at Berklee, which is where she fell in love with songwriting once and for all. Bracken eventually made her way to Nashville—a dream come true considering it is a songwriter's mecca.Teri Bracken's new album as Brontë Fall, Not Done Yet is about resolve and spirit and ignoring anything in the way of dreaming — even yourself. Bracken wrestles with herself throughout the album. She almost quits, she pulls herself back; she laughs at those who told her to get a more sustainable career; she curses herself for not getting a more sustainable career. The album, defiant and beautiful and mournful and triumphant, is a chronicle of a life lived exactly as Bracken wants, compromising to no one in her quest to continue building a budding and supportive scene for alt-Americana around the country.https://www.brontefall.com/https://linktr.ee/brontefall?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQMMjU2MjgxMDQwNTU4CGNhbGxzaXRlAjE1AAGnDw6Xr5SZcvarPqUSegemPi_U49RAUn0rrULQYte9wwxe-sJ5Wj_5fRz1ceA_aem_i0Syg85DVncZ8lqfU72o2wTheme song: “Hollywood Faded' by Luna Halo@treymitchellphotography @feeding_the_senses_unsensoredfacebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographyftsunashville@gmail.com

Judson Spence (born in Pascagoula, Mississippi) is an American pop music singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist. He originally gained fame when he released his eponymously titled debut solo effort on Atlantic Records in 1988. The album was produced by Monroe Jones and David Tickle, and executive produced by future Interscope founder Jimmy Iovine.Although he had a top 40 hit with "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" in 1988 and also had a minor hit with "Drift Away" from The Wonder Years soundtrack, Spence was dropped from Atlantic before completing his second album in 1991.After several years of struggle, Spence's composition "The Power" was covered by both Amy Grant and Cher and was also used for a national Century 21 advertising campaign. Subsequently, he recorded the indie release "painfaithjoy" in 1995.He performed with Trisha Yearwood on the Oscar nominated song "How Do I Live Without You" in 1997 and sang live with her on the American Music Awards, The Tonight Show, The Oscars, and the CMA Awards. In 1999, he released his third solo album in Japan, titled I Guess I Love It before his record label, Pioneer Music Group closed its doors. That album was produced by former Eagle Bernie Leadon. In 2000, he toured with Trisha Yearwood. The following year, Wynonna Judd cut Judson's song "New Day Dawning", and it became the title track to her album. In 2003, Spence released two albums: The Velvet Kitten Sessions, which was a mainstream collection, and Opus Dei, which was a religious-themed effort. In 2014, Spence filmed a movie about his life, Sing the Blues, that also featured his music. Now based in Birmingham, AL, Judson is constantly writing new music still.Theme song: “Hollywood Faded' by Luna Halo@treymitchellphotography @feeding_the_senses_unsensoredfacebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848www.threads.net/@treymitchellphotographyftsunashville@gmail.com

ohn McEuen is a Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist, producer, author, and a founding member of the legendary Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a group that helped bridge bluegrass, folk, and country-rock for mainstream audiences starting in the 1960s. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he has performed thousands of shows, contributed to dozens of albums, and become one of the most influential acoustic musicians in American roots music. His work on banjo, guitar, mandolin, and fiddle has shaped how generations hear traditional music reimagined for modern ears.In 1971, McEuen was the driving force behind the landmark triple album “Will the Circle Be Unbroken,” which brought the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band together with icons like Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Mother Maybelle Carter, Roy Acuff, and others for historic cross-generational sessions in Nashville. That project has been recognized as one of the most important country and bluegrass albums ever recorded, helping introduce younger audiences to the classic repertoire and artists who defined American roots music. The album's legacy later inspired his detailed book on the making of those sessions, further cementing his role as both participant and historian of that moment.Beyond the Dirt Band, John has built a rich solo career with multiple albums that showcase his “String Wizard” reputation, blending instrumental firepower with storytelling and cinematic arrangements. His discography includes acclaimed projects like “Made in Brooklyn,” which earned major Americana honors, as well as collaborations with artists ranging from Steve Martin to John Carter Cash and Martha Redbone. As a producer, he also earned a Grammy for Steve Martin's “The Crow,” highlighting his skill on both sides of the glass.McEuen is also an author and storyteller, with his memoir “The Life I've Picked” tracing his journey from Southern California kid to hall-of-fame banjo player working with legends like Linda Ronstadt, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, the Allman Brothers, and Bob Dylan. His more recent book and projects around “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” revisit those sessions with photos, stories, and reflections that bring fans right into the circle of players. Onstage and on the page, he brings the same mix of humor, detail, and lived history that makes him such a compelling guest for any music podcast.John's contributions have been recognized with inductions into the American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame and the Traditional Country Music Hall of Honor, along with multiple Grammy, CMA, and ACM honors across his career. He continues to tour, record, and create new projects, bringing stories and songs from more than fifty years on the road to audiences around the world. After taking a week to recap the magic and madness of Hulaween 2025, Karl Engelmann returns to the show for part two — and we pick up right where we left off. Karl dives into life at his restaurant and bar, Epic Catering/Mel's Place, including hosting the Cuddle Clouds album-release party on November 2nd.From there, the duo gets into the world of independent artists — releasing music across formats, the wild talent of mastering engineers (Karl insists they're “aliens”), and how his current project Cuddle Clouds ties into the broader web of creative work he's building. He walks us through the roots of the old-time bluegrass movement, what it means to help keep the tradition alive, and how playing upright bass has shaped him both creatively and professionally. They go everywhere: the impact of Hurricane Helene… leaf season in Western North Carolina... Arizona THC gummies… telepathy… and even the eternal question — did Pompeii have a house band? With Karl, it's never a dull moment, and part two is no exception.Part One: https://droppedamongthiscrowdpod.simplecast.com/episodes/a-conversation-with-multi-instrumentalist-karl-engelmann-part-oneCheck out the self-titled debut from Cuddle Clouds wherever you stream music, and read Sara J's full review on Patreon → patreon.com/datcmediacompanyMore from this week's guest:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cuddlecloudsband/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61581501368985https://www.instagram.com/epiccatering/https://www.facebook.com/epiccateringllchttps://www.e-entrees.comTheory One Productions: [https://www.theoryoneproductions.com/https://www.instagram.com/theoryoneproductions/https://www.facebook.com/theoryoneproductionsMulheron Banjos: https://www.mulheronbanjos.com/https://www.instagram.com/mulheron_banjos/Donate to DATC Media Company: https://datcmediacompany.com/supportGive the gift of Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/Datcmediacompany/giftThe DATC Media Podcast Family: https://datcmediacompany.com/podcastsWant to be a guest on the show? https://datcmediacompany.com/contact/ola/services/be-a-guest-on-dropped-among-this-crowd-podcastWant to be a RoughGauge featured artist? On the heels of two Grammy-winning albums in succession, with her band Golden Highway—2022's Crooked Tree and 2023's City of Gold—plus a nomination for Best New Artist, Molly Tuttle returns with a solo album that's her most dazzling to date: So Long Little Miss Sunshine. Recorded in Nashville with producer Jay Joyce (Orville Peck, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson, Eric Church, Cage the Elephant), the fifth full album from the California-born, Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and virtuoso guitarist features twelve new songs—eleven originals and one highly unexpected cover of Icona Pop and Charli xcx's “I Love It.”   Tuttle's career, which began at age fifteen, has charted a course between honoring bluegrass and stretching its boundaries. On this album—a hybrid of pop, country, rock, and flat-picking, plus one murder ballad—she goes to a whole new place. Her stunning guitar work is more up-front on this album than ever before. (One of the most decorated female guitarist alive, Tuttle was the first woman to win the prestigious International Bluegrass Music Award's Guitar Player of the Year in 2017, at age twenty-four, and won again the following year, with nominations nearly every year since; she has also won Americana Music Association's Instrumentalist of the Year award.) So Long Little Miss Sunshine also features Tuttle playing banjo, something she's never done on one of her albums before.    The album was recorded with a group of musicians that includes drummer/percussionists Jay Bellerose and Fred Eltringham, bassist Byron House, and Joyce on multiple instruments. Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show) also plays banjo, fiddle, and harmonica, as well as singing harmony.  Tuttle also conceived the artwork for So Long Little Miss Sunshine, which features multiple Mollys, each wearing a different wig except for one with nothing on her head at all. (“I probably own as many wigs as I own guitars,” she says.) Tuttle has been bald since she was three years old due to the autoimmune condition alopecia areata; she acts as a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.   One album track, “Old Me (New Wig),” is “about leaving all these things behind that don't serve you anymore,” she says. “Parts of yourself that really aren't in your best interest, like low self-esteem, anxieties, and not feeling confident. Learning to own these different aspects of my personality but not letting them control me is another theme of the record that inspired the album title and the cover art. Those are all things I've struggled with through the years—just feeling like an impostor, like I wasn't good enough. I like singing this song because there are days when I still have to tell myself to leave that stuff behind.'”   Most of the So Long Little Miss Sunshine songs were co-written with Secor, who is also Tuttle's partner. “We spend so much time together, we live together, and anytime I have a song idea, or he has one, it's just so easy to transition from whatever we're doing into writing a song.”  Earlier this year, Tuttle played guitar and sang on Ringo Starr's new country album, Look Up. She also played with him and a host of other stellar musical guests at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry as part of his televised Ringo & Friends shows. She was inspired by his fearlessness in following his passion for country music. “It is cool to see someone like that who has done everything you could imagine doing in a music career and he's still just so psyched and still has a list of things that he wants to accomplish,” Tuttle says. Looking back on her own career, “It has never been a cookie-cutter thing where I'm just going down a straight road. I always had this crooked path.”

Karl walks us through the tracks, the creative process, and the hilarious visual that pops into his mind when he explains the band name. And in true Karl fashion, we naturally veer off into aliens, UFOs, meteors, interstellar objects, Christmas albums, and even a wild story about his project Mother Vinegar playing a show at a strip club.Karl also shares his thoughts on the analog vs. digital debate, what bringing the upright bass into his repertoire has opened up for him (including the chance to play with three completely different bands), and how a trip to Sedona inspired both a track on the album and the full color scheme of the cover. And that's just part one.Hilarious, nostalgic, and packed with surprises — you're not going to want to miss it.

Singer, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Emma-Jean Thackray joins Chrystal Genesis to talk about her new album, Weirdo, an ambitious, deeply personal project written, performed, produced, mixed, and arranged entirely by Emma-Jean in her South London flat.  In this episode, they discuss how grief, neurodivergence, and resilience shaped the record, which blends elements of jazz, funk, soul, grunge, and pop. They explore her early path into musicianship, how isolation and creativity came together in the making of Weirdo, and why embracing your weirdness can create a powerful sense of self. The conversation touches on vulnerability, community, and finding your home in music, with tracks from Weirdo, out now via Brownswood Recordings and Parlophone Records, featured throughout.
