Disfruten. This was a fun episode for us testing livestream capabilities with a small family and friend audience. Besides scary stories, we discussed some truly wild conspiracy theories that we PROMISE you've never heard before, polygamy (cause Mormon), and the Olympics. Some of the info is a little dated since some more current events have emerged since this was recorded a couple of weeks ago. Riley Keough could be considered an authority on how actors can avoid judging their characters. The indie film star, who has held onto a lifelong dream of playing fascinating, liberated women on camera, reveals the different creative processes she uses to connect with such roles: “I don't know if you need to love your character.” But, she adds, “When you're playing somebody, you have to try and find empathy for them.” Growing up in Los Angeles surrounded by entertainers (including her mother Lisa Marie Presley), Riley worked as a model before debuting in “The Runaways” and breaking out in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” She's starred in “It Comes at Night,” “The Lodge,” “The Devil All the Time,” worked with Steven Soderbergh in “Magic Mike,” “Logan Lucky,” and Season 1 of “The Girlfriend Experience,” and earned a Spirit Award nomination for “American Honey.” Riley now plays Stefani, a chaotic stripper, in A24's Sundance hit “Zola,” adapted by writer-director Janicza Bravo and writer Jeremy O. Harris from an infamous Twitter thread. Stay tuned for Riley's advice on portraying intimacy onscreen, as well as Christine McKenna-Tirella's tips on ensuring safety and comfort on set. It can feel bumpy, right? A little more space than what you’re used to feeling. And, if there are two or more poles, well, it can all get a little unbalanced! For you and your horse. I preach all the time about the benefits of groundpoles when used correctly. And, one of those benefits comes from riders learning what to do when navigating them. Groundpoles are, well, Poles! One of the first issues riders come up against when working over groundpoles is that they treat them like they’re not there. They are. And all of the bumpy, unbalanced, sometimes discomfort, you are feeling when you ride over them is evidence of that! Expecting to initially ride over groundpoles and not do a thing differently is simply setting both you and your horse up for an uncomfortable experience. As your horse steps over the pole, he will use his body differently. He has to lift his legs higher. Yes, 4 to 5 inches is still higher. He will also have to step under himself a little more to propel himself forward. This is especially true if there are two or more poles for him to navigate. He will engage his core. A little like ’tightening up his tummy’ as he moves over them. And he will stretch down and forward with his head and neck to see what he is doing, to balance, and to allow the freedom of movement the rest of his body needs. All of the above is one of the reasons groundpoles are so beneficial for your horse, regardless of discipline or training level. Read More... Welcome to Everything Trying to Kill You, the comedy podcast that talks about horror movies! On episode 57 about Trey Edward Shults’s 2017 film It Comes at Night, your hosts Mary Kay McBrayer, Rachel Estridge, and Mary Beyer answer important questions like these:Where would you insert the grimacing emoji face when you’re texting a friend about this movie? What inspired this film? Why is Peter Breughel “the elder?” What painting would inspire YOUR horror film? Why don’t we have any horror movies about unicorns? Is It Comes at Night horror? Why does the tension never release? Do we like the ending? What’s the deal with “protection?” Does “protection” even matter if death is inevitable? Why was their blood so dark? What’s the purpose of every decision being rationaliz-able? Did you notice the ambient noise or nearly-silent dialogue described in the closed captions? Was Andrew sick? Who opened the door? Does it matter? Why would you hang that horrifying Breughel painting in the hallway across from your family photos? What is the “it” that comes at night? How was the plague transmitted? Do the characters know? Are they just being incredibly cautious? Did you like the casting? How flawless was Andrew’s performance? What about Joel Edgerton? Carmen Ejogo? So basically… perfect casting? How do we get Christopher Abbott to fall in love with Rachel? Why are there so many only-children? Is Will an only child? Is Paul what we all need? Is Sarah the ultimate bad bitch? Could they have done anything different? Welcome to the first podcast of 2020. This time around, we're completely flipping the switch. No longer will we make fun of prominent metal musicians and call them "dick wads" when they do insanely racist shit. Instead, we'll all join hands and learn how to appreciate riffs together. Just kidding. FIRST UP: Kottak Attack! Somehow the former Scorpions drummer turns a benefit concert into an opportunity to join a fascist podcast. NEXT UP: Sharon Osbourne cackles about firing her servants after abusing the shit out of them. THEN: We learn what a Lorna Shore is have a convo about misogynist dick wads in deathcore. Jordan asks the tough question, what deathcore band would we join? As I Lay Dying keeps reaping the rewards of a broken industry by getting added to Wacken. BULLSHIT. We learn what it costs to get your band on Jimmy Kimmel and decide to start saving our pennies for the worldwide premiere of Crotch Monster. And finally, we close it down with some Johnny Knoxville appreciation. Happy new year, y'all. Actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Luce, It Comes at Night) joins q host Tom Power live in studio to talk about his role in the new film Waves.
Writer/Director Trey Edward Shults joins me for Episode 12 of The Fourth Wall to talk about his third feature "Waves" (my FAVORITE film of the year) discussing the critical moments in his own life that directly inspired the events of the film. As A24's "Waves" comes crashing into select theaters this Friday, it's astounding to think that such a profoundly human, visceral, and heartwrenching tale is the work of a filmmaker on their third feature film, however, not every filmmaker is Trey Edward Shults. The Houston native, who's previous two works, "Krisha" and "It Comes at Night," both garnered praise for their craftsmanship and intimate exploration of family, puts forth his most personal venture yet cementing his utter mastery over the art of filmmaking. He's a storyteller who thinks with emotions first and how he can let those feelings take flight in a way that allows audiences to experience what he so deeply feels. Perhaps his prowess over the visual grammar of filmmaking originated during his time working on Terrence Malick movies possessing the same cerebral tendencies as the master above. However, there's something distinctly provocative about how Shults captures the human experience, and nowhere is this more apparent than in"Waves." Across all three of his feature films, Shults has explored a constant thematic through-line of complicated family relationships to which the director himself admits inherently seeps its way into his work. Much of this stems from his upbringing and turbulent relationship with his biological father who's impact has been the subject of exploration across Shults' feature films with "Waves" harkening back to the pivotal final moments he spent with his father in autobiographical fashion. By boldly utilizing direct experiences from his own life, Shults understands the innate power in being open and honest with an audience. During our conversation, it became clearer that the filmmaker is someone who will always speak from the heart through personal experiences. This openness comes in the form of a wrestling injury, a pivotal conversation he had with his stepfather, a road trip he and his girlfriend took, and most importantly, his friendship with Kelvin Harrison Jr. as they bonded and meditated over "Waves" to Frank Ocean's "Blond" and "Endless." Shults recalls and interweaves these specific exchanges in such vivid detail, conveying his mastery of human emotion and understanding the relatable power these personal experiences will have in allowing an audience to connect. Those moments truly come alive, however, through the use of a perfectly curated soundtrack that was formative in the creation of the film and an interactive scripting process. During our conversation, we also discuss the first time Shults listened to Radiohead's "Moon Shaped Pool," his use of aspect ratio, color, movement, and how he discovered his cinematic voice. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theplaylist/message

Season 3: Episode 75 - Longtime Companion/It Comes At Night Longtime Companion (1990) Considered one of the first major films to deal with the AIDS crisis of the 80’s would be considered a triumphant upon its release. Craft Brew News – 6/7/19(courtesy of Brewbound.com)NFL Allows Players to be Featured in Beer AdsThe National Football League will now allow its players to be featured in beer ads, according to Morning Consult, citing a league email. The news comes months after the NBA and MLB lifted restrictions on active players to be featured in beer ads. However, the NFL has put restrictions on its players’ participation, including:only active players can be featured in the ads;the ads cannot imply players are endorsing the products;if a company wants to feature more than one player in an advertisement, it must use a minimum of six players in the ad.players also must be featured in uniform in action shots using “licensed Associated Press” photos. The NFL also eased restrictions on wine and spirits companies, allowing them to become “official” sponsors of its franchises. Although wine and hard liquor companies will be allowed to use team logos on packaging, they will not be able to use players in their advertisements.Details of CBA’s Kona Lawsuit SettlementA month after Craft Brew Alliance agreed to settle a years-long class action lawsuit over alleged “false and deceptive advertising” of its Kona Brewing beer brand, the Portland, Oregon-based craft beer company has detailed the settlement agreement in a May 23 SEC filing. As part of the agreement, CBA will pay up to $10 to customers without receipts and as much as $20 to those with a proof of purchase. CBA has said it expects to incur costs of $4.7 million to settle the dispute.According to the original complaint, CBA “intentionally” misled consumers ito believing Kona products are made in Hawaii. Although CBA operates a production facility in Hawaii and produces thousands of barrels on the island, a majority of Kona beer sold in the continental U.S. is brewed at facilities in Portland, Oregon; Portsmouth, New Hampshire; and at an Anheuser-Busch brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado.Deschutes Brewery Launches New Brand Campaign(Check out Episode # 42 where we interview Deschutes BrewMaster Brian Faivre)Deschutes Brewery is attempting to position itself as “the beer of choice in the land of recreational cannabis,” the company said in a press release. The Bend, Oregon-headquartered craft brewery released a series of videos and advertisements earlier this week as part of its new “It Comes with the Territory” campaign.According to Deschutes vice president of marketing Neal Stewart, the company is “drawing attention to the healthy tension between craft beer and cannabis.”“People are going to enjoy recreational cannabis, but we want to remind them that this is still one of, if not the best place on Earth to enjoy a beer and Deschutes helped put the craft brewing industry on the map,” he said.No-Li and Goose Island Butt Heads Over ‘Born & Raised’ Name(Check out Episode # 25 where we interview Matt Jimenez, Head Brewer at Goose Island China in Shanghai )The Chicago Tribune chronicled attempts by No-Li Brewhouse founder John Bryant to resolve a dispute with Anheuser-Busch-owned Goose Island, which recently began using the name “Born + Raised” for a new, draft-only ale that is exclusively available in Chicago.Spokane, Washington-based No-Li has used the “Born & Raised” name for its flagship IPA for the last seven years. He claims No-Li has “first-use” rights to the name. However, his efforts to resolve the issue have been rebuffed by Goose Island leaders.“I don’t think we should have to give Anheuser-Busch a brand that’s established since 2012,” he told the Tribune. For his part, Goose Island president Toss Ahsmann said he’s confident the Chicago craft brewery can use the name since No-Li doesn’t own a federal trademark on the name.Subscribe to Craft Beer Storm Podcast iTunes: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/craft-beer-storm/id1438117278?mt=2*** A Top 20 Podcast in Food on iTunes ***Michael Potorti is the Host of Craft Beer Storm and Founder/Brewer at Beara Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NHMichael PotortiFounder/BrewerHost of "Craft Beer Storm" Podcastmichael@craftbeerstorm.commichael@bearairishbrew.com*** Come visit our brewery for some delicious local craft brew! ***Beara Brewing Co.2800 Lafayette RoadPortsmouth, NH 03801Tel.
