Welcome to web3 with a16z. Today's episode is all about design, creativity, and taste-making. Our special guest is Jason Mayden, the chief design officer of Jordan Brand at Nike — that's Jordan as in former NBA superstar Michael Jordan. In his role, Mayden is responsible for the look and feel of iconic products, like Air Jordan sneakers and related apparel. In this episode, Mayden speaks with Chris Lyons, a16z crypto's president of web3 media, about the interdisciplinary nature of industrial design, the role of humans in an AI world, what makes fashion and food alike, and how to build a brand, whether you're in crypto, sportswear, or another field. This conversation originally took place at a16z crypto's Founders Summit in the fall of 2024. Is your business struggling with staff motivation? Are your products and services up to the expectations of customers or is there space for more? Mayden struggled with these questions and they tore up the rule book and got rid of their managers. Today they are thriving. In this episode I share my learning from a conversation with Michelle who set up the coaching framework that they rely on to drive performance and solve business problems. ---------------------------------------------------------- If you want to receive monthly advice, ideas and recommendations that will help you gain a commercial edge and get ahead, why not join our exclusive newsletter: https://zcmp.eu/e6AM  ----------------------------------------------------------- For more information about Chris Webber and Foxleigh Commercial Performance find us online www.foxleigh.net Chris Webber | LinkedIn ----------------------------------------------------------- Prior to joining Mayden, Michele worked for 10 years in international aid before moving to a business development role with an NHS community service provider. After yet another operational restructure, which the NHS is notorious for, Michele became Head of Marketing and PR for that organisation. Michele joined Mayden in 2014 as a freelance marketing contractor but the lure of Mayden's open culture, sense of purpose and fantastic group of colleagues made staying on in a permanent role a no brainer. Within two years of Michele joining, Mayden took a leap of faith to become a company of self managing teams, at which point she retrained as a coach and set up Mayden's internal coaching programme. Michele is a professionally certified Business and Personal Coach and runs both Mayden's coaching and mentoring programmes, as well as working across the business to support colleagues to thrive in a company that organises a little differently.  Michele Rees-Jones, ACC (ICF) | LinkedIn

Mayden made a decision to operate without managers. They realised that they needed to provide some frameworks for their teams so they created internal coaches. Since then they have become more efficient, more effective and receive excellent customer feedback. In addition their staff are all proud to work there. In this podcast we explore the model with Michele who is the owner of the coaching framework. We discuss how they set business direction and the challenges and opportunities of working without hierarchy. It is an inspirational episode for anyone seeking to work differently, drive productivity and slash internal complexity. A distress call brings the TARDIS to the colony ship Madrigal on an important mission: transporting some of the first human colonists to their new home on Edevane's World. But when the ship is hijacked and gets caught in a tractor beam, the computer's AI, MAYDEN, calls on the Doctor for help. Traveling down to the frozen planet Epiquilius, he meets the Zenbeyga, a race of creatures reminiscent of armored wombats. What could they want with the human ship and why do they want to leave the planet so urgently? And as the colonists start to wake from their cryogenic slumber, tensions flare as both sides do what they must to survive. As the planet shakes, the Doctor soon realises there is something far worse to worry about. Something underground is stirring. And if it breaks free, it will devour the universe.

In this episode, you'll also hear:The unique approach Kirstyn took in her devotional journal's table of contentsThe importance of taking actionHow to relieve the pressure of worrying about tomorrowWhy you should seek a professional editor for your book — even if you are an editor yourselfKirstyn's advice on moving forward a little bit each dayReceive God's Grace & Take ActionWhen Kirstyn Mayden was putting together her devotional Merciful Moments: A Devotional Journal for Moving Forward With Grace Each Day, she decided to take a different approach to the table of contents than many authors use for their devotional books. Instead of labeling the sections as “days,” she labeled them according to their action-based topics. “I wanted the reader to have freedom to look at the topics and scan whatever topics they may be going through in that season, and whatever resonated with them,” she explains. “And I didn't want anybody to feel like, ‘Oh my gosh, I missed day one! I'm gonna freak out!' Because that's the purpose of receiving God's mercy: to give yourself that grace. So I wanted that to start while reading the book.”It was also important to Kirstyn that each of these sections have a clear action step for readers to follow so they can move forward in faith after receiving God's mercy and being encouraged by His word. Of course, we can trust that God will take care of our needs, but Kirstyn argues that we also have a responsibility to fulfill the role God has empowered and equipped us to play. Focus on the PresentAccording to Kirstyn, part of that responsibility is to understand that we can't always control our circumstances — but we can choose to keep ourselves encouraged and moving forward even in the midst of difficult circumstances. Often, this means focusing on the present day instead of letting ourselves get distracted by worries about the future. “When we take the time to focus on today, it's a way to relieve the pressure off ourselves of having to carry all that weight of wanting to know the outcome,” Kirstyn says. “Then we'll be able to focus more on giving gratitude and focus more on, ‘What needs are being met for me this day?' As opposed to what needs I may not have tomorrow.”Choosing to focus on one day at a time like this allows us to be present and appreciate the small moments of beauty God gives us each day. Scripture tells us that His mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23), but if we're always thinking about what's happening tomorrow or next week, we may miss the mercies of today. Let Go of PerfectionWhen it came to actually writing and publishing her book, Kirstyn says it was not a quick process by any means. Although she knew for years that she wanted to write a book — and kept telling herself she would do it — she kept putting it off. Even after she'd started writing, she hesitated to share it with others, because she wanted it to be “perfect.”“I just gave myself a list of all these reasons why it wasn't ready to move forward,” she recalls. “And in that moment, God was like, ‘You know what? You're just going to have to step out and move forward. It's never going to be perfect.”Once Kirstyn accepted that it was time to share her work and hired an editor, she found herself getting frustrated by how long it took to undergo multiple rounds of editing — and then to get it all finished up and ready for publication. “It's been a journey,” she says now. “But I'm glad that at the top of the year, I didn't tell myself again the list of reasons why this wasn't ready to move forward. So it's been about a two year process, but I'm glad that I stayed the course. And I'm glad that I didn't let my pursuit of perfection and my fears totally deter me from moving forward.”Stay the CourseMaybe you, like Kirstyn, are afraid to share your manuscript with others. Or maybe something else is holding you back from moving forward with writing and publishing the message God has given you. Whatever the case may be, Kirstyn urges you not to give up. Pray for God's guidance, and make use of the resources you have to work on your book and your craft just a little each day. When you need help (and you will!), don't be afraid to invest in professional assistance so you can present your God-given message as effectively as possible. “This journey of writing a book is not just about writing the book — ultimately, the message that you have for your reader is going to live on long beyond the book's publishing,” Kirstyn says in closing. “This is your message to the world that God has given you, and it's going to be beautiful, but you have to stay the course. So don't give up, be encouraged, and know that the message that God has given you to write will manifest in its due time.” BIO:Kirstyn Mayden is a Christian blogger who writes devotionals that empower and equip believers in their everyday lives. Philippa Kindon and the team at Mayden think so and they've captured their journey of creating a self-managing workplace in their recent co-authored book, 'Made without Managers'.Mayden is a 140-person strong health-tech company based in Bath, providing market-leading software to NHS Mental Health Trusts, charities and third-sector providers. Mayden takes an agile and self-managing approach, having broken free from traditional people hierarchies and instead is organised around teams that manage themselves and their work. The team at Mayden wanted to share their stories, not because they think they've got this way of working all right, but rather because they want to provide examples of how it can work, and also give a real account of some of the challenges.A lifelong student of organisational behaviour, Philippa earned her PhD from the School of Management at the University of Bath with research into identity in the workplace. Passionate about people at work, she believes that everyone deserves to be happy in their work. Not the lighthearted laugh-at-a-film surface-level happiness, but a deep, fulfilling sense of purpose and joy through connection to a meaningful endeavour.Philippa's role at Mayden spans business development, innovation, coaching and championing self-managing ways of working.Topics include: What was the problem that Mayden wanted to solve with self-managing teams? How Mayden was able to take ways of working from software development and apply them to the entire organisation How career growth and progression work in self-managed teams Does self-management mean there are no hierarchies? How do work-placed investigations progress in a managerless organisation? What about interpersonal conflicts? As we head into a new year—and leave behind a year that was challenging for just about everyone on the planet, with the hope that this year will be better for all—we wanted to share an interview with one of the most optimistic, creative, and insightful people we know: designer, entrepreneur, and educator Jason Mayden. When we first interviewed Jason in 2018 for one of our Design Better Conversations, we knew we had to get him on the podcast. He had such a unique perspective on design as a service to humanity that we sensed our audience would love to hear his story. We spoke with Jason on a wide range of topics, from how a near-death experience in childhood shaped his career and life, to how he maintains his energy and focus, to why being a polymath is an enormous advantage in today’s job market. We finish the interview on a topic that strays a little from our usual subjects but is ultimately more important: how through all of our individual struggles we can benefit from recognizing our shared humanity.  Takeaways: Learn what drove Jason to create his company SuperHeroic, and what he took away from the process. Hear how servant leadership shapes his work and creativity. Understand how Jason designs his life using tools like creative direction and brand strategy, Bio In his previous role at Nike, Jason oversaw the design and execution of all conceptual products, data-driven innovations, and inline lifestyle and performance product for Jordan Brand, as the Senior Global Design Director. During his 13+ year career at Nike, Mayden led and contributed to the creation of innovative sport performance products for athletes and cultural icons such as Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Derek Jeter, and Michael Jordan. In 2011, Mayden successfully received his Master’s in General Management and Social Innovation from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business and shortly thereafter he returned to Nike as the Global Director of Innovation for Nike's Digital Sport division where he was responsible for the strategic investigation of new technologies and services, such as the Nike Fuel Band and the Nike+ platform. Currently, Jason is an advisor, d.Fellow and Media Designer at the Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford University, a frequent lecturer at Stanford University’s prestigious Graduate School of Business, and an advisory board member to his undergraduate alma mater, the College for Creative Studies.

Alabama Football Podcast - College Football Talk dedicated to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide

In this episode Tom and Dave from the Alabama Football Podcast breakdown the Tide’s dismantling of the Arkansas Razorbacks.   Offensive Personality Alabama continues to flex and demonstrate its personality on Offense and it’s fun to watch. The ball is being distributed around the lot with more efficiency. The ‘right’ players are running the ‘right’ plays. And the play calling is more reflective of film study and anticipation. Tune is as we call out a couple plays that demonstrate just how dialed in the Tide offensive staff was to this game. Running Back Rotation We spend a few minutes talking about the new rotation at running back and how that is serving the team so well. We also speculate on a circumstances that impacted our roster management at the position. Wide Receivers Emerging There appears to be a clear passing of the torch at the receiver position on this year’s squad. No one is claims Calvin Ridley’s claim as the best receiver on the team just yet, but the next generation of pass catchers aren’t wallflowers either. Depth at Defensive Line We’ve speculated all season about the Tide’s depth at the position and appears we’ve finally reached a consensus. Tune and let us know if you agree. Healthy Pass Rush Alabama has demonstrated an ability to get after the quarterback this season and this emergence is due in no small part to the returning health, depth, and form at the linebacker position. Check out why we’re pleased with this position for now and the future. Fielding Punts Possessing the ball has become something of a mantra on the podcast – makes sense as teams can’t score without it. But we’re equally parts bull and bear on that to expect out of the punt return position in the Tides upcoming contest. Mini Game balls Anyone can read a headline, but which players contributed in more subtle ways to the Tide’s fortune?   Alabama’s Next Opponent Next up for Alabama is the 100th meeting with the Volunteers of Tennessee.   Kick After – a ‘lil nugget that didn’t make the show Surprisingly we didn’t spend any time talking about the Hog’s scoring drive near the end of the game. Of course giving up a score is never the objective, but I think this may be an exception. Stick with me. The defense was comprised of youth and backups, so while any experience is good experience, some experience is great experience. This is the later. The defense forced Arkansas, who was still playing their starters, into a 4 play goal-line stand before finally allowing the score. The Arkansas drive, to call it such, was largely kept alive by reckless penalties – most notability a pair committed by backup corner Jared Mayden. But here’s the catch for me. Mayden is likely the future at the corner position next season so the game reps and lessons are critical for his development. It actually reminds me of Dee Milliner seeing some of his first action at corner. He was burned badly for a touchdown against the same Hogs as a true freshman and came back to have an outstanding All America career for the Tide. While I’m not yet predicting the same heights for Mayden, I think the experience of this drive – including, or perhaps especially, the sting of allowing the touchdown will serve this team well in games and seasons to come. We hope you’ll check out the Podcast and in the meantime, Roll Tide!

Ep. 024 - Tikh attended an AIGA talk from prominent designer Jason Mayden. Mayden shared an interesting take on mastery rendering it 'dead' in some regard. Now, before you dismiss this idea, be open-minded with this one. Mayden says that our society will continue to see more polymaths - people wide wide-ranging skills. The speed at which things are changing will continue to feel crazy. How do we keep up? Forgetting about mastery. Next, delight. What happens when we delight others? How can we do this more? Why should we do it more? Lastly, how should we deal with anxiety? Anxiety is an extreme emotion. Extreme emotions can be challenging. How can we remain calm? Or mitigate them? It's not easy, but there are tools for us to come back to.

This week on The Final Straw Radio, I spoke with Mars Goetia. Mars is, among other things, a musician, parent and anarchist who's been doing a lot of thinking and working around conflict engagement in and around anarchist communities. In this episode, Mars and I speak about about the difficulty of language when engaging in interpersonal conflict, about state repression, expectations and more. Announces: In June we aired 2 conversations with members of the Turkish group DAF, Revolutionary Anarchist Action. Among the three voices featured was that of Hüseyin Civan, the managing editor of Mayden Magazine. Hüseyin has been sentenced to 15 months in prison by the Turkish government for Mayden articles in support of Kurdish struggles for autonomy and against state repression in Turkey. This sentencing comes amid a very troubling time in Turkey. Following the Turkish government's reversal of seeking peace with Kurdish groups in the country's eastern regions, a failed coup earlier this year, the grab at increasing presidential control and prerogerative, non-secular regime of Tayip Erdogan has resumed military incursions into Kurdish communities and purged educational institutions and media of critical voices. They even went so far as to allow Daesh fighters across their border to fight Kurds and anti-capitalists and have launched attacks across the Syrian border into Rojava. To contact DAF to offer solidarity to Hüseyin, you can visit http://anarsistfaaliyet.org On Jan 5th, 2017, The Odditorium in Asheville will be hosting a benefit concert for the newly-formed Blue Ridge Anarchist Black Cross starting at 9pm. Come early for a Security Culture 101/201 training where folks'll talk about things you need to keep your community safe.
