Every year I talk about how this festival feels like a family reunion and this year was no exception. It's not just because I get to see my normal Tweed Couch Buddies and not just because I get to perform music with my bandmates. It is because of the bond we share because of our desire to see this Christ centered event be successful. Of course, much like a family working together. There are plenty of stories, frustrations, laughter, sweat, blood, and tears as the event goes on… oh and a fair amount of shenanigans too. But what bands played this year at Lifest? Did they use real amps? Who is Lord Meniscus? Why was I called “The Rabbit”? What is a guitar vault? Can you decorate them? Did my 12 year-old get to drive? Did my 16 year old help run the main stage? Did the Newsboys really go on without Michael Tait or Peter Furler? Are big name artists actually nice people? And rain… did lightning really nearly strike a stage? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Owen & Eli, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tweedcouch/support

This month we are listening to new music - and are looking at the song Bottom Of The Barrel by Rusty Shipp. Paul ran across this band while at Lifest. The song and the music video are both available on most streaming platforms, and this band is a smaller/newer band that (spoiler alert) both Paul and Aaron think should be listened to.Use Your Words podcast is passion project of two people from Southeastern Wisconsin. I love this festival! I love playing music at this festival. I love bringing my family. I love the community. I love this festival! Of these 25 years of Lifest, I have been to 17 of them in Oshkosh, WI. In 2000 I was there to play with Echelon. 2004 - 2007 I played with Second Adam. 2008 I played with Echelon & Lynn Stoneking. And from 2012 - now, I have driven the 1300 miles up to play with Echelon, Lynn, Swen & Dean, and Jonathan Cain of the Hall of Fame rock band Journey. I've played Electric, Acoustic, Mandolin, Bass, and Drums. I ‘ve been an artist on their Grandstand, Edge, Pit, Kid Zone, Prayer Journey, Expo, and Bonfire stages. I have been the most used artist every year I've been there… and I love doing. But what shenanigans happened this year? Is it okay to teach your kid how to do a B & E? Why was Matthew West throwing Cheese Curds? Does Lifest hate TV's? How awesome was it to play on the grandstand again? Is there a reason we need a keeper of the keys? What does it mean to pull a snake? And… sketchy trailers… Well, we're not going to Mexico. Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Owen, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tweedcouch/support

It's the Wednesday before Christmas so we spend some time reflecting on what we will be doing to celebrate Christmas this year. We start out talking about some licensed music that is useful for podcasting/streaming/etc. and listen to a few samples. Things go downhill quickly as we talk about Aaron taking Kringle to his favorite band - August Burns Red. Of course during this conversation, Aaron learns about eggs and why people used to be able to leave eggs on the counters in the past. We start out with Aaron's plans for the Christmas break after the trip to Pennsylvania with Paul. The fun that Aaron will have after getting back from the trip - includes LetterKenny on the 26th, him potentially working alone during the week between Christmas and New Years, Aaron lifting his restriction on not drinking Alcohol and the new rules that go along with this which leads into a conversation about the difference between Heavy and Binge drinking. On a personal note - I have to give Aaron Kudos for his commitment to being dry for so long, and sticking to it even in the face of wanting drinks once in a while. We then go onto Paul's plans for the Christmas break after the Pennsylvania trip include watching some LetterKenny, and just relaxing in general.Besides these topics, we talk about how Paul hopes that Brewer has a kid that gives him grief, Paul already planning his Lifest trip in July, and his uncertainty to be able to watch Dr Who going forward now that Disney is subsidizing the show. We also learn that Aaron just now found out that Toby Mac's son died due to a drug overdose in 2019.Use Your Words podcast is passion project of two people from Southeastern Wisconsin. Tim lives in Stoughton, Wisconsin with his wife and two adult children. Originally from Toledo, Ohio, Tim moved to Wisconsin over 23 years ago to marry Tracy. He graduated from St. John's Jesuit High School in 1983 and began attending the only college he ever wanted to go to–Ohio Northern University (ONU) where his grandfather was a leader in the Psychology Department. At ONU Tim studied Philosophy and Religion and Psychology while being involved in Sigma Theta Epsilon (Christian Service Fraternity), a faculty/student choir and with traveling ministry teams (Son's Rays and a failed attempt at puppetry.) Unfortunately Tim was only able to spend two years at ONU (for details, you can have him speak on growing up a child in an alcoholic household and becoming an alcoholic himself.) Tim transferred to Bowling Green State University (BGSU) and graduated (barely) in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a minor in Philosophy. While at BGSU Tim was active in campus ministry and served as Youth Director for a local parish while volunteering with the Diocese of Toledo. The highlight of his BGSU career was listening to Mr. Rogers speak at his graduation ceremony. Tim spent time as Director of Pastoral Concerns and religion teacher at a local high school, as an early childhood educator and as a substance abuse counselor before being accepted into the Masters program at John Carroll University (Ohio) in 1990 and earning his Masters in Counseling in 1993. While at John Carroll (JCU), Tim was also involved in numerous volunteer activities including an outreach to Appalachia. He also received the Magis Award from the Student Council of JCU. After a year of working as a College Counselor and Hall Director in Ohio, Tim moved to West Virginia to volunteer on a Catholic Worker Farm. While there, a friend introduced him (over the phone) to the wonderful woman who would become his wife. Tim moved to Wisconsin in 1995 and Tracy and he were married that same year. They were blessed with Hunter being born in 1997 and Sami in 1999. Since moving to Wisconsin, Tim has worked in early childhood education; in customer service at Davis Duehr Dean; in Quality Assurance at Epic Systems; as an Office Manager at LakeView Church and as a House Father for the Elizabeth House. Ten years ago Tim was hired as an Outreach Specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Waisman Center where he currently works as the Director of the Southern Regional Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs, Family Discipline Coordinator for the WI LEND program and as a senior outreach specialist with the Youth Health Transition Initiative. In 2014, Tim finally finished a 10+year journey when he earned a Master of Arts in Christian Studies from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Illinois). As his capstone project Tim combined the scientific research around forgiveness and his faith background's belief in forgiveness to develop an eight week course centered on why forgiveness is necessary and how to forgive. Since then Tim has taught about forgiveness at Stoughton Hospital, Lifest, area churches, local and statewide mental/behavioral health conferences, an aging conference, on the radio and at educator wellness events. Tim's brings a unique perspective through sharing his personal journey through childhood trauma, alcoholism, betrayals, misunderstandings, mental health challenges and life. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/normalizetheconversation/support

We have talked about Lifest for a few years now. So let's dive into our artists' geeky passions. Let's start with one of our Wisconsin hometown heroes, Skillet!
Today on the Tweed Couch we are counseling on “Lifest Music City, TN 2022” This is the second year on Johnny Cash's Hide Away Farm doing a music festival and it did not disappoint! Yes there were less stages but the quality of performer went up. Casting Crowns, Zack Williams, Steven Curtis Chapman, Skillet, Sidewalk Prophets, Swenless, and the list goes on… But, what changed this year at the festival? Did we see any good gear? Where did all the tube amps go? Why are we now lighting guys? How did Lloyd crash the set of a main stage artist? Will he be allowed back next year? Why is Dr. T singing Elvis & Carrie Underwood songs? And why was a Kemper being mic'd? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Lloyd, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tweedcouch/support
Some people stay home and vacation. Some like to go to the beach. Some enjoy camping. Others like to sight see. My family likes to do Lifest. It is probably the only working trip that feels more like a family reunion. Of course my experience is unique. I am an artist, as well as a production team member. I get the best of both worlds and the worst of both worlds… But what is a Fluffy White Bunny? Do bad things happen to gear at a festival? Why does Owen hate brooms? Did a band really have a baby at the festival? Who played in their spot? Why is standing side stage not fun anymore? Is COVID19 still a factor? And, are keyboards taking over the world? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Owen, on the Tweed Couch. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tweedcouch/support

Musician Ben Fuller graciously shares his testimony and music. You can also hear him this weekend at Lifest! Music has taken Ben Fuller’s life and made it into something he never would have dreamed. Ben grew up in Southern Vermont on his family dairy farm working alongside his father. Due to generations of hurt in his family, Ben struggled with certain aspects of growing up and turned to cocaine and alcohol at a young age. Motivated to change, he moved to Nashville to pursue a career as a country singer in late 2018. A family Ben was close with invited him to church one Sunday and as he walked the halls into the auditorium filled with 3,000 people, he knew one day he would sing "that kind of music" for the rest of his life.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To make up for this - the next two segments of Aaron's Book Club are being released as one episode. This week we finish talking over the book What He Must Be To Marry My Daughter. While both of the guys initially are fans of the book - the second half of the book starts to show the faults in the book and the disagreement the guys have with it. This week, I am talking with Natasha Owens in front of a live audience at Lifest music festival in Osh Kosh, WI. as she shares how her first ever concert she performed was opening for Michael W. Smith as well as touring and learning life lessons from Jason Crabb. We discuss what is like to tour with a full band and the costs and challenges of owning your own production and tour bus and paying a large crew on the road. Plus, when doing music ministry, God does not call the equipped, He equips who He calls. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. In this episode we talk about: *Working through depression and anxiety. *Overcoming adversity. *The reality of touring on a bus. *How to find venues to perform for. *The importance of having a website. *Having your own band and crew on the road. *The cost of putting on a show. *The bus driver's schedule. *Having sponsors for a tour. *Have music recorded to show people. *Have video to sell yourself to venues. *Record labels sign artists based on their You Tube and social media. BIO: “There's something intrinsic about humanity and a survival instinct. Most of us will do whatever we can to keep our head above water, to take one more breath in and out…to keep breathing and keep our heart beating. But God's intent for His children, His creation, wasn't limited to survival. He intends for us to thrive. “I have come that you may have life to the full.” (John 10:10). For Natasha Owens that verse isn't merely a comfort or a pick-me-up… It's a decree. A mantra for life…and it is the very thing that has turned her darkest days into a light that is too bright not to share. “Life is hard and heartache, tragedy and loss aren't selective or rare. But for many people, as soon as they make it through the given crisis, they stop there. They stagnate,” she says, reflecting on her own season of loss and the dark days when all she could do was breathe in and out. A few years ago, Natasha's father, 58 at the time, was doing a simple task he'd done hundreds of times before. There was no drama. There was no build up. There was no warning. While cleaning his guns one day, one misfired, placing a bullet in his chest. He died soon thereafter. “After the shock wore off, the depression set in,” she shares. “For some reason, our pastor came to me and said he thought I should be the music minister at the church.” After a lot of time in prayer, alongside her husband, Natasha accepted the position. Soon, the music, the mission and the ministry captivated her heart. It stole away the listlessness and confusion and hopelessness. Week after week, as she poured herself into the music of the church, thereby pouring herself into the lives of all who comprised that church body, the Holy Spirit poured into her a peace, a reassurance and a drive to take this opportunity even further than she could have imagined. Unbeknownst to Natasha at the time, those songs lent more than strength. They laid the foundation for what would become the next chapter in her heart, her healing and her ministry. Vacillating between the church platform and a writer's room, Natasha soon had another collection of songs; songs of restoration, hope and peace. At the prompting of a friend she took her music into the recording studio and created her first full-length project. It didn't take long for the album to circulate within the music industry, opening doors left and right. The brand-new recording artist landed an opening slot for CCM icon, Michael W. Smith and she was invited to tour with Dove Award Artist of the Year recipient, Jason Crabb. With each new opportunity came another chance for Natasha to share her heart, her message and her hero. The songs that had been her healing, her comfort and her restoration were becoming that very thing to people around the world. Following the success of her last project, industry heavyweight and iconic producer Ed Cash agreed to produce her next project and was as excited as Natasha about the message that was about to emerge. Each track, while beautifully unique in their own right, illuminated the idea of rising. With lyrics that are inviting, melodies that are compelling and delivery that drives home the truth within, these songs allow listeners to be honest and vulnerable in the most challenging and intimidating circumstances. “He doesn't call the equipped. He equips who He calls,” she says with stalwart conviction. “That has stuck with me and given me the courage to do what He's called me to. If God is with me, I can do all things. I can do more than survive. I can thrive. If others can see the power of God to do such a work in my life and then translate it to their own…to really believe that they can do more than just get by, I've done my job.”
This week I'm talking with a live audience at Lifest in Osh Kosh, WI sharing my story and answering questions from the audience about the music industry. We are discussing the pros and cons of streaming platforms, the importance of having other writers critique your songwriting and what I believe is the definition of success for anyone pursuing a career in the music industry. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. In this episode we talk about: *Building a touring schedule on your own as a new artist. *How to build relationships with people in order to writing songs professionally. *Recording albums with today's technology. *The pros and cons of streaming platforms. *What record companies look for in signing artists in today's climate. *How to hone your songwriting skills. *Have 3 other writers to give you honest feedback about your songs. *How to find venues that play your style of music. *The pros and cons of going to college for music vs. bypassing college. *When others quit, you keep going. *The definition of success. *www.johnmartinkeith.com *www.edenbrookeproductions.com BIO: John Martin Keith is a singer-songwriter with Edenbrooke Music in Nashville, Tennessee. He is passionate about God and music and has over 20 years of experience in the music industry. John Martin, better known as Marty, has performed in front of thousands from the stage along with artists including Steven Curtis Chapman, Jaci Velasquez, and NewSong, among others. Originally from Paducah, Kentucky, Marty began learning to play the guitar at the age of four from Herb Chapman Sr., father of GRAMMY and Dove award winning artist Steven Curtis Chapman. Throughout his early life, Marty played talent shows and county fairs in Kentucky, sharpening his skills and preparing for the day he moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue his dream of a music career. During his college years in Kansas and Missouri, he shifted into music ministry, working with youth camps, which shaped his style of music into what it is today. In 2006, Marty became an ordained worship pastor and was dubbed a “musicianary” by one of his pastors. Since then, he has spent years touring the country, sharing the gospel of Jesus through his music in churches, camps, youth conferences/retreats, and colleges. “When I lead worship, my goal is not to become the focus, but to turn the focus to the throne of God. I want worshipers to look inside themselves and at their relationship with Jesus. To understand that apart from Christ there is no hope in the world and through Christ alone can salvation, peace, and joy be found,” says Marty. He adds, “These songs fit into every category of life. They are about real life, real joy, real love, real struggle. Being a Christian does not mean we won't have struggles. Christ told his disciples, ‘in this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.' (John 16:33) Even in the struggles, there should be worship. Everything we do in life should be an act of worship to the Lord.” Marty's music strives to be a reflection of that. As a songwriter, Marty writes multiple genres, including Pop, Country, Praise & Worship, Americana, Rock, and Dance with some of the top hit makers in Nashville including Mark Irwin (Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw), Nicole Witt (George Strait, Lee Brice), Brady Seals (Little Texas, Hot Apple Pie), Lindsay McCaul, Farewell Angelina, Luke Brown (American Idol), and Shay Watson (Sidewalk Prophets, The Young and the Restless). Marty also writes and produces songs for tv/film and ads with artists from all over the world. He currently has music placed on CBS, FOX Sports, Discovery Channel, History Channel, The Smithsonian Channel and more. Marty takes every opportunity given to him to create great music with the hope of enriching peoples live through it. In upbeat songs of praise to our Creator, heartfelt love songs for his wife, or heartbreaking stories of despair he has personally encountered, everyone can find something they are looking for in John Martin Keith's music. Marty is the owner of Edenbrooke Music. Edenbrooke Music strives to improve the quality of musical entertainment by improving talent though teaching, by improving sound through production, and by improving the career of the musician through performance and recording opportunity. Edenbrooke Music offers guitar lessons, live sound for special events, booking for touring artists and music production services. Learn more at www.edenbrookemusic.com.
photo by jasonwaitephotography.com This week, I'm talking with Ben McDonald of the band Sidewalk Prophets in my first ever live recording with an audience at Lifest music festival in Osh Kosh, WI. With three major studio albums, five #1 hits, and eight top 5 songs under their belt, Sidewalk Prophets has solidified their place among the elite artists in Christian music. As a founding member, Ben has been one of the leading songwriters and guitar players in the band. We are discussing how to handle to hardships and successes of getting a band off the ground as well and the ever changing involvement Ben has in the band as he has recently stepped off of stage but continues to be a driving force behind the bands songwriting, creativity and success as the band's manager. Plus, we talk about the importance of being resilient in this industry to be successful. Sponsors: Edenbrooke Productions - We offer consulting services and are offering listeners a 1-hour introductory special. To request more info on consulting services, email Marty at contact@johnmartinkeith.com. In this episode we talk about: *You have to write a lot of bad songs to find the good ones. *The importance of choosing a band name. *When starting out, play where you can as much as you can. *It's a long term commitment. *How to contact artists to play your venue. *Working your way up the rung in the industry. *Resilience. *When things are hard, you can choose to quit or choose to go forward. *Practice your craft. *Write with people who are better than you. *Learn how to take criticism. BIO: Sidewalk Prophets is more than just music, and more than just entertainment we are family. The band has a strong desire to make everyone feel loved and valued and the goal of this new on-line store is to make sure each person feels special. Dave Frey and Ben McDonald had no idea what was in store for them when their paths crossed at Anderson University years ago, but one listen to their hugely anticipated major label debut, These Simple Truths, confirms the band's undeniable talent. The fact that they have been on the road for 150+ dates per year for the years and show no signs of slowing down attests to their tenacious work ethic. But while there are tons of bands with talent and tenacity who never progress beyond the garage, Sidewalk Prophets insist it is the ever-present hand of the Lord that has lifted them to the next level of their career. With three major studio albums, five #1 hits, and eight top 5 songs under their belt Sidewalk Prophets has solidified their place among the elite artists in Christian music. Their goal is simple: Authentically sharing Christ. Creatively inspiring Hope. Joyfully making everyone feel like someone.

After over 20 years of festivals in Oshkosh Wisconsin, Life Promotions has extended Lifest to Johnny Cash's Farm in Bon Aqua, TN. Of course, with a new region and a new venue, you can expect some new challenges to present. Fortunately for Life Promotions they have a recipe for success with bands they know, competent production companies, dedicated volunteers and workers, and a drive to make this festival thrive. But how did Johnny Cash get this farm? Why are we doing a music festival on it? Did I get to play on stage? What gear did I play? How different is it to be Stage Management instead of Band Member? And, is it worth doing again? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Lloyd, on the Tweed couch. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tweedcouch/support
Back in July 2000 I went to a festival in Wisconsin with a band named Echelon. I still remember watching other bands like Audio Adrenaline, Third Day, Relient K, and the OC Supertones. So much fun. From 2004-2008 I started going with my own band named Second Adam where we were known to play anywhere between 5 and 7 shows over the course of the 4 day event. A few years later I became part of Stage Management, aiding in the organization and implementation of what makes up the many venues, activities, and facets of Lifest as well as hopping around from stage to stage problem solving for the crew and bands as needed. Of course, the real fun is in still being able to play the festival. From GrandStand to the Kid Zone (and all the places between) I will usually find myself with multiple bands playing a multitude of instruments... It is tiring and fulfilling. But what was so special about Lifest 2021 in WI? Are there any good stories? How quickly can a stage be set up and ready to go? Did I get to see any good shows? And what perspective did my 13 year old have a member of the stage team this year? Well we will discuss this, and more on this group therapy session with Owen, on the Tweed couch. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tweedcouch/support
