Today's episode is a special, landmark episode as we enter the 200's! As a result, I decided to clip out some bite-sized bits from previous episodes featuring 3 leading authorities in the mental toughness domain; Dr John Perry, Professor Peter Clough MBE and Doug Strycharczyk, who go onto share their thoughts about the importance of self-awareness whether you are a mentally tough or mentally sensitive individual.  Their insights come from years of applied work and academic research across sport, education, business and health domains.  Enjoy! Key Learning Points: Developing self-awareness is very difficult for some people. You can develop yourself through reflection, enhancing your self-awareness, whereby you then go on to try out new things, you learn from different situations, you understand why you felt that way and why you reacted why you did in certain situations. The key driver in the development of mental toughness is self-awareness. Learning about our mental toughness can enable us to understand more about our mental approach in specific situations. Self-awareness then allows us to make the necessary changes to our approach so that we can perform better or improve our psychological well-being. Today marks a landmark in the Demystifying Mental Toughness Podcast where the show has been running for 2 years without missing a week.  As a result, 2 very special guests and pioneers in the field Doug Strycharczyk and Dr John Perry join me.  Together we discuss the third edition of their book alongside Professor Peter Clough, Developing Mental Toughness, we chat about new developments to the 4C's Mental Toughness model.  Doug and John also share their thoughts on where research and practice is heading sharing insights into Mental Toughness and its relationships with innovation, trust and Mental Health. Key Learning Points: The development of the eight factors in the four Cs Mental Toughness model include the introduction of goal orientation, achievement orientation, risk orientation and learning orientation. The eight factor framework for mental toughness has brought a new lens to understanding how other people behave.  We've been looking at things like trust, innovation, curiosity and more recently vulnerability. Goal orientation is the extent to which you are likely to be motivated by targets. Achievement orientation is the extent to which you make sure that you stick in to meet that target or goal. Learning orientation links to the question – do you keep making the same mistakes? In sport a lot of people struggle with reflection and repeating mistakes.  Age may have something to do with this. There is potential for developing some really interesting solutions for lots of people through the Mental Toughness lens moving forwards. The 4C's model is sufficiently complex, in that it represents people and the future is very exciting where we have many options to continue on the great work already done. Ali goes into detail about what prevents you from knowing your True self - that part of you that lives in happiness and ease.  Suffering is optional. If you are miserable, if you are in pain - physical or emotional - the choice to suffer or not lies in your own hands.  Your thoughts create emotions that spark feelings. Your thoughts and feelings ALWAYS match. NO BELIEF IS FACT.  Just because you have thought it and believed it for so long - just because those in your world believe it that does NOT make it true. The stories you tell yourself keep you stuck. The stories running in your head cause your suffering. How can suffering be a choice when you are in pain - physical pain or emotional pain? Ask yourself, “Are you the pain or are you the one observing the pain?  Your body does not hurt. Your feelings are not real - only Conscious Awareness experiences what you hear, see, taste, touch and smell.  So why do you feel like you suffer? You believe your mind is you. Your mind keeps you in the past (where pain is constantly revisited) or in the future. It bypasses the only real moments of life - the now. Most people spend about 5% of the day in the NOW. That means you live in your past or future 95% of the time You don't DO anything to be happy. You ARE happy. Your job is to remove the blocks you put up to experience your happiness.  This necklace is made of lignum vitae wood known as the Tribe of Life. It is the hardest, heaviest wood in the world long-lived and impervious to moisture and insects. This gift celebrates how I choose to live from after two traumatic brain injuries altered my life.  My story THRIVE! Today, I chat to a Mental Toughness expert, Paul Lyons where we discuss what mental toughness is.  The crossovers that exist from the sport and exercise domain that transfer into the business world. Paul goes on to share how he supports leaders, business owners, and entrepreneurs to build the mental strength needed for their chosen fields and the type of benefits that his typical clients experience.  Key Learning Points: Peter Clough talks about Mental Toughness being comfortable in your own skin. Being able to just focus on the moment, taking control and responsibility for your thoughts and actions is important. Choose to accept yourself, understanding your strengths, limitations, and your blind spots. Your experiences shape your Mental Toughness. Lots of business people when they start a business are very, very clear and focused on what they want to do but over time this focus gets diluted and their confidence ebbs away. It’s easy to lose your sense of identity, focus and confidence much of my work is to restore and repair this. In this solo episode, I share my thoughts on some difficulties that athletes are having during the coronavirus pandemic, especially now in the UK with the most recent lockdown.  How this has gone to make them feel and the impact it is had on their intensity levels in training and for those who are lucky enough to practice or still compete.   Key Takeaways: A lot of negative emotions are evident with athletes and coaches right now during the lockdown. The more mentally tough amongst them are better able to focus on what they can control. Do distractions mean that you don’t train at a high level of intensity? Do you use training to really challenge yourself?  Top athletes push themselves so much in training that when they compete it’s easier. Build a motivational playlist. Does your warm-up help you feel energized? Check your self-talk and use motivation buzz words to gee yourself up.   Thrive, Not Just Survive with Teresa Wiedrick Teresea Wiedrick joins me on this edition of my special series, Look For The Helpers. We talk about learning, homeschooling, and living through a an epidemic with teenagers. How do we manage overwhelm and learn to thrive, not just survive? Teresa Wiedrick is eager to share the freedoms of the homeschool lifestyle with the skeptical, the intrigued, and the curious. Twelve years ago, she searched for arguments against homeschooling, and that search shifted her family’s next decade. She is now a hearty advocate of home education and encourages other homeschool families to turn their challenges into their charmed homeschool lives. Having homeschooled for more than twelve years, Teresa is very aware of the intense nature of this lifestyle. "A mama has got to practice self-care so she can thrive, not just survive," Teresa says. Teresa is president of the British Columbia Home Education Association and will release her book, “Homeschool Mama Self-Care: Thrive not Just Survive” very very soon. She can be found on-line at www.capturingthecharmedlife.com, www.instagram.com/capturing_the_charmed_life In This Episode In this special episode Teresa talks about some of the challenges that parents face as they try to home educate their children and the solutions that can last a lifetime. We discuss; Working while homeschooling~is there ever really the 'perfect' balance? Keeping our kids engaged Socialization vs social opportunities Why knowing your purpose helps guide any activities throughout your days Managing Intense Emotions Overwhelm and negative self-talk Self Care We also talk about what becomes important in learning and education, new ways that we can approach our current reality and supporting unexpected home learners with teens. Teresa's family has experienced a pandemic crisis before. The isolation, uncertainty and lack of control are not new to them. In this episode Julia talks with breast cancer warrior, 2016 Mother of the Year, and single mum Farrah Millar. Farrah was on the show a year ago (episodes 34 and 35) and in this episode we get an update from Farrah on the last 12 months since she was on the show. Farrah was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer when her daughter was just 14 months old and her son was less than 24 hours old. Recovering from a caesarean section, Farrah began 4 months of intense chemotherapy, and then further treatment (including a double mastectomy), all whilst parenting two babies and dealing with the breakdown of her relationship. With her daughter now three and her son two, Farrah updates us on what's happened in the last 12 months - 15 admissions to hospital (including 6 operations), her phenomenal efforts at raising money for breast cancer and spreading breast cancer prevention awareness, the overhanging fear of cancer returning, trekking the Great Wall of China, a new love, and so much more.  If you haven't already, listen to Part 1 (Episode 34) and Part 2 (Episode 35) before this one.  Links mentioned in Podcast: Breast Cancer Care WA is a WA charity that provides personalised emotional, practical and financial support and care to people affected by breast cancer.  To contact Farrah, email: farrahmillar@hotmail.com, or connect with her on Facebook or Instagram.
