Actor, activist, and Story + Rain cover star Freida Pinto, known for acclaimed films such as Slumdog Millionaire and Trishna, returns to the screen this summer in the delightful Mr. Malcolm's List, a movie that shakes up what we've come to know as the period genre in film. The new mother is fiercely focused when it comes to her work, and in episode 106, Freida explains how and why her production company, Freebird Films, seeks out projects that allow her to tell stories that “angle towards hope”---they're about to make some big moves. Listen in as Freida discusses the stories she believes are lacking on the screen, how she prepares for a role, her desire to step far out of herself for them, and her preference to remain on the go, on any given project. You'll hear intimate stories about the many prolific directors she's worked with like Ron Howard, Danny Boyle, Terrence Malick, and Woody Allen---as well as what it's like working with first-time director, actor Kristen Scott Thomas, on My Mother's Wedding, which she is currently shooting, co-starring Scarlett Johansson and Sienna Miller---one of the most fun casts she's ever been a part of. Freida talks about her most taxing roles, shares stories from set and the valued relationships she's created there, including a surprisingly sweet story about Sir Anthony Hopkins. We talk motherhood, her work with postpartum plan and brand, Anya, and what it's like to be part of a creative couple. We get into details about Mr. Malcolm's List, her latest film, out on July 1st. We cover everything from its modern and inclusive international vibe, to the notion of having a checklist when looking for a partner, and how and when she's created one for herself. We go back to the beginning: her school days, her modeling days (and why she disliked it), and all things her very first film and smash hit, 2008's Slumdog Millionaire. Welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast about the bitter, the sweet and the bittersweet of life for classical musicians when the music suddenly stopped. Hosted and produced by me, Cliodhna Ryan, a violinist, it's an intimate and heart-warming exploration of the human spirit. My guest in episode thirteen is oboist Dan Bates, my colleague in the Irish Chamber Orchestra. After an initial sense of exhilaration in the first few weeks of lockdown, Dan shares his experience of a crushing depression, the treatment he was offered, and the impact this had on him. His sweet memory is of the three chickens he reared; Anastasia, Garbo and Clemmie Bunting. His bitter was witnessing the effect of lockdowns on his Mum. This conversation was recorded in September 2021. Daniel Bates (MA CANTAB, FRSM, FTCL, ARAM, AGSMD) is principal oboe with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia and co-principal oboe of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Previously, he also held the principal oboe position with the Royal Northern Sinfonia at the Sage, Gateshead. He has played guest principal for all the major UK orchestras as well as various international orchestras such as the National Orchestra of Colombia, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. As a session musician, he has recorded for numerous pop acts and films, including the Harry Potter franchise and for Barbra Streisand, Mary J Blige, Rihanna and Stevie Wonder. Born in London, Daniel attended the Purcell School of Music. He was subsequently offered scholarships to every music college in the country and chose to study at the Royal Academy of Music under Celia Nicklin and Dougie Boyd. This was followed by a music scholarship to study at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he read Music and the History of Art. He has performed solo concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, the Irish Chamber Orchestra, the Brasov Filharmonica, the Turin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Mozart Players and the English Chamber Orchestra. Solo recitals include venues such as the Wigmore Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Usher Hall and the Purcell Room. Internationally, he has given solo recitals in venues such as the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and at various European festivals partnered with musicians of international renown including Jörg Widmann, Elizabeth Leonskaya, Joan Rodgers and Anthony Marwood. As an actor, having studied classical acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, his credits include the title role in The Picture of Dorian Gray (Vienna's English Theatre), Fedotik in The Three Sisters (alongside Kristen Scott Thomas and Eric Sykes in the West End) and Adrian Green in Casualty (BBC TV). Critics Sarah Crompton and Abir Mukherjee review Slow Horses, the brand new series from Apple TV+ starring Gary Oldman, Kristen Scott Thomas, Olivia Cooke, Jack Lowden, Saskia Reeves and Jonathan Pryce. Slow Horses is based on the novel of the same name by Mick Herron, which is part of the author's Slough House series. It tells the story of a team of British intelligence agents who have all committed career-ending mistakes, and subsequently work in a dumping ground department of MI5 called Slough House. New ballet film Coppelia is an innovative family feature with an original score by Maurizio Malagnini, performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra. Choreographed by Dutch National Ballet artistic director Ted Brandsen, it combines 2D and 3D animation with live action dance and features a blend of musical influences from classical to electronic. Based on the original 19th century tales of E.T.A. Hoffmann this modern adaptation tells the love story between Swan and Franz, which is jeopardised by Dr. Coppelius and his uncannily beautiful protégée Coppelia. With a diverse and world-class cast, including Michaela DePrince, Darcey Bussell, Daniel Camargo, Vito Mazzeo and Irek Mukhamedov, the adaptation is created by filmmakers Jeff Tudor, Steven De Beul and Ben Tesseur. Sarah and Abir review. Professor Andrew Biswell, Professor of Modern Literature at Manchester Metropolitan University and Director of the International Anthony Burgess Centre, marks the 50th and 60th anniversaries of ‘A Clockwork Orange' by looking into its history, controversy, and legacy. Front Row will be announcing the winner of the National Poetry Competition this evening. Previous winners include former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, and distinguished poets Tony Harrison, and Jo Shapcott.

From masculinity and warfare and what makes a great king to death and the loyalty of friends, Shakespeare takes what is essentially nothing more than a grand war-filled saga and imbues it with depth and meaning that the siege of Harfleur or the Battle of Agincourt don't hold on their own. The end result is a complex story that glorifies war at the same time that it calls it into question, in that way that it seems only great literature can do. ** Mea culpa: It's not Emma Thompson but Kristen Scott Thomas in the episode of Fleabag referenced by Lindsay in this episode. Two things we love in life are horses and shirtless men. We also love Scarlett Johansson but NOT the underage version we find in THE HORSE WHISPERER. This is something Sam Rockwell needed to hear again twenty-two years ago as his little indie film LAWN DOGS went up yet another western epic from Robert Redford. And since Mr. Rockwell is presumably one of the many listeners we have let this episode be a gentle reminder of appropriate relationships between a simple landscaper and a young misanthrope. We also did not care for the hair of Kristen Scott Thomas. But she probably doesn't listen. Enjoy! Quick Cap #5: Fleabag monologues, Jessica Simpson's new book, Brit Marling's NYT essay, and Natalie Portman claps back at Rose McGowan **We can’t get enough of Fleabag. There were two monologues from Season Two that didn’t fit into our standard format -- we tried to let them go, but we couldn't. Kate applauds the relatability of the speech on womanhood delivered by Kristen Scott Thomas on women's awards and women's pain. “Hair IS everything!” Fleabag says to Anthony after Claire gets a bad haircut -- and yes, Fleabag, we totally hear you. Carinn gets personal about her emotional hair journey, including cutting off seven inches of her own hair with some kitchen shears a few weeks ago. - **We dissect the New York Times Opinion piece (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/opinion/sunday/brit-marling-women-movies.html) by Brit Marling with the incendiary title, “I Don’t Want To Be The Strong Female Lead”. We couldn’t resist this teaser: “In pop culture, women are often objectified and disposed of. But even when we’re not being victimized, the alternative leaves much to be desired.” We unpack Brit’s fascinating journey from Goldman Sachs to Netflix darling The OA, and of course find a way to compare Brit's ideas of the hero's journey to Fleabag and Erica Barry from Something’s Gotta Give. We also dig DEEP into what it means to have masculine and feminine traits, pulling from astrology, Chinese philosophy and Tantric tradition. (19:57) - **We recount the Natalie Portman vs. Rose McGowan ( https://m.eonline.com/news/1122437/rose-mcgowan-slams-natalie-portman-s-deeply-offensive-oscars-outfit) Oscar’s feud over Natalie’s dress with a shout-out to the names of the snubbed female directors. Rose McGowan called out her “type of activism” as “deeply offensive” and hollow, but Natalie clapped back eloquently but with bite. (39:15) **Carinn stayed up way too late starting Jessica Simpson’s memoir, “Open Book”. It’s juicy, quirky and deep -- a rare combo! Read Lord of Scoundrels at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Kobo or your local indie.Show Notes- We love Sierra Simone! Sarah talked about Sinner on the Best Friend's Sibling episode, and Sierra was a special guest on our MacRieve episode. She'll also be joining us on a very special future interstitial.- Will Kresley drop Munro like Beyonce? One can only hope.- If you want to join Sarah's FB Old School Romance Book Club group, click here and wait for moderator approval. We (try to remember but sometimes have to be reminded to) post a discussion post for each week's episode there.- Have you listened to what we consider to be our sister podcasts: The Wicked Wallflowers, Heaving Bosoms, and Black Chick Lit? We also love Learning the Tropes and RomBkPod. Check them out for all your listening needs.- Facebook is garbage and Zuckerberg is aiming for Bond Villain.- The modern day dirty priest fantasy is Fleabag, the old school one is The Thornbirds.- If you're not following Jen Porter on Twitter, what are you doing with your life?- Sierra's Markham Hall series is an erotic retelling of Jane Eyre.- Jen doesn't like first person present.- What does it even mean to be star-crossed?- More about reader response theory.- A defintion of "framing device" and how they work in fiction.- In the Catholic Church, penance is one of seven sacraments.- In case you want to know more about hairshirts as a thing, but please don't wear one.- In the Ice Planet Barbarians series, the khui is a mystical thing on the ice planet. That's really all you need to know.- More about the history of Rhode Island as a haven for escaped Catholics. No not that kind of escaped Catholic.- The 2015 movie Spotlight is about the investigative journalists who broke the story of priest sexual abuse in Boston. In one famous scene, a reporter knock on the door of a retired priest who answers her questions in a shocking way. (All the trigger warnings on that scene, by the way.)- Mark Ruffalo the hulk vs Mark Ruffalo in Spotlight.- Sarah recommends the audio of Priest.- This summer, the Catholic Diocese of Providence released the names of 50 priests who were credibly accused of abuse.- Celibacy is a core tenent of Catholic priesthood, but as less and less men enter the priesthood, that might be changing in some interesting ways. Please note that the Vatican is more likely to lift celibacy requirements before they'd allow the ordination of women.- Eddie Izzard.- If this is the defintiion of an inspirational romance, then Priest qualifies.- The Tessa Bailey book with "baby girl" is Fix Her Up. It's hot if you don't mind that sort of thing.- What we know about priests and sexual abuse.- Hot Cop is a book by Sierra Simone and Laurelin Page.- In season 2 of Fleabag, the therapist who asks if she wants to "fuck the priest or fuck God" was played by Fiona Shaw. Kristen Scott Thomas gives a barn burner of a speech after the "people are all we have" moment.- All about Saint Anselm.- In case you don't know, the home at the parish for the priest is called the rectory.- Sarah refers to the book of the Bible as Song of Songs, but it's also called the Song of Solomon.- Jenny Nordbak was a guest host on Heaving Bosoms talking about Priest, and it's a great episode if you just need more. Sierra Simone was also on a delicious episode of Wicked Wallflowers!- The sequel to Priest is called Midnight Mass.- Why is a nun's outfit called a habit?- Erin from Heaving Bosoms famously does not read prologues or epilogues. We love her even though we don't really understand.- Shop for buttons from Best Friend Kelly and t-shirts and totes from Sarah.- Christina called in today to talk about Colleen McCullough's The Thornbirds, and we hope she enjoyed Sarah's shout out to it this week!- Coming up: Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase on Nov 20, 2019; Indigo by Beverly Jenkins on Dec 4, 2019; Born in Ice by Nora Roberts on Dec 18, 2019; and A Kingdom of Dreams by Judith McNaught on Jan 8, 2020.

They create multimedia content that makes you feel happier, more relaxed, and at ease... and all of these health benefits are delivered straight to your brain, through your screen. I met Michael a few months ago at a small event I was invited to by a dear friend. During the event, Michael was sharing about the work he does through Aebeze Labs, and Moodrise. I was intrigued by Michael's charisma and witty commentary on the current digital landscape. He was joined by Devendra Banhardt, who is involved in the project as a collaborating artist. What I loved about Moodrise is that they are creating digital nutrition, or content that is scientifically proven to enhance your mood, and they are co-creating this beautiful multimedia content with talented artists like Devendra Banhart, Kristen Scott Thomas, Daisy Lewis, or JD Samson. I was inspired by Michael’s work, his brilliant perspective on technology, and mental health, and the way we he is tastefully weaving art into the equation. In this interview, We talk about our relationship with media and technology; the ways we can use technology in our daily lives to our advantage, and not our detriment. I hope you enjoy this conversation, and it might even shift the way you interact with technology, for the best.
