In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, data storyteller Sam Knowles welcomes Kieran Maguire, an acclaimed expert in football finance. Kieran's a chartered accountant, academic, author, and podcaster. For the past decade, he's been a lecturer in football finance at the University of Liverpool's Management School. He often appears in print and particularly broadcast media, making sense of the often bewildering and often chaotic world of football finance. He has a reputation for his “clear-headed and rigorous analysis of the financial imperatives and challenges facing football”.   Kieran's the author of the critically-acclaimed, award-winning book The Price of Football, the second edition of which was published in 2021. The Price of Football is also the name of his twice-weekly podcast which – since 2019 – has clocked up more than 400 episodes. Kieran presents the podcast alongside the comedian, Kevin Day. He truly is a multi-media expert in football finance.   Our conversation was recorded remotely, via the medium of Riverside.fm, on Transfer Deadline Day at the start of the 2023-24 football season, 1 September 2023.   Thanks to Joe Hickey for production support.   Podcast artwork by Shatter Media.   Voice over by Samantha Boffin.   A Brighton & Hove Albion fan, chartered account Kieran argues that he doesn't have the communications and networking skills required to pursue a career in finance. He spends his days obsessively updating spreadsheets of football clubs' finances, ably assisted by more than 250 alerts from the Companies House website. As well as teaching.   The most egregious act of data malarkey Kieran's observed in the many years he's been following football finance was the attempted (and still not-dead) breakaway European Super League; “an attempt to steal the heart and soul of football”.   For Kieran, the three biggest myths in football finance are: 1. Spending other people's money – recklessly – is a good thing 2. Footballers' wages are too high 3. Tickets for the Premiership are too expensive   The Premier League's broadcast deals generate 60% of the 20 top flight clubs' revenues, and the league is the world's most popular, with live broadcasts and highlights packages sold in 190 countries. And while women's football is enjoying its highest profile and a surge in popularity thanks to the Lionesses' ongoing success, Kieran doesn't think that there will be wage or playing budget parity at elite men's and women's clubs (outside of Lewes FC) any time soon.   Manchester City's men's team generated £610m in revenue in the 2022-23 season; its women's team generated £6m. That 100:1 ratio is reflected in the £20m its (injury-prone) midfielder, Kevin de Bruyne, trousers as an annual salary, compared with the highest-paid England women's player, Leah Williamson, currently on £200,000 a year (or about half of what Harry Kane receives each week from Bayern Munich).   EXTERNAL LINKS The Price of Football – podcast, books, merch – https://priceoffootball.com Kieran on Twitter (X) - https://twitter.com/KieranMaguire Kieran's LinkedIn profile – https://www.linkedin.com/in/kieran-maguire-a085033/ A Memorable Gov.uk blog on how Kieran uses Companies House data to keep track of football finance     To find out what kind of data storyteller you are, complete our data storytelling scorecard at https://data-storytelling.scoreapp.com. “I think that it is challenging to bring our own thinking and our own mental models to the surface because we're not trained to do it. We're not really teaching kids how to be reflective of their own thinking and the role that their emotions play in framing up their conclusions and how they feel about the world. And so we don't have great capability in that. It doesn't mean we can't, there are certainly people who have developed and cultivated a deep practice of reflection and metacognition that enables them to understand not just what they believe, but why they believe it. But I think the truly foundational thing to engaging in this practice for yourself and with others is a recognition that there are very, very few right answers in the world, right?”-Jennifer Reil In this episode of Control the Room, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jennifer Reil about her experience working at IDEO, metacognition, and teaching at the Management School at the University of Toronto.  We talk about her new book Creating Great Choices: A Leader's Guide to Integrative Thinking.  We then discuss the difficulty in building the capacity to think about what we think about and opposing modals of thinking.  Listen in to learn how to build empathy, the curse of knowledge, and failing better.

It's in our DNA to want more influence. Especially as Parks & Recreation professionals, we want our voice to be heard. We want our share our ideas, relay insights from our patrons, and be respected as a leader in our agencies. Too often, we wait for a promotion or status to decide that we have *enough* power to influence. But as Chris Dropinski points out in this week's episode, real power is something that is earned, not given. "Effective influencing is a skill and a very valuable one; power is not a skill, it is a result." This means that TODAY we each have an opportunity to influence others. In fact, we influence all the time. Everything we do can cause a chain reaction - just imagine the impact you've already made. Knowing that you already have influence, the key now is to use it for good. This week's episode is an in-depth conversation around how to influence without alienating others. Enjoy! Meet Chris Dropinski: Her current role as co-owner and Senior Principal at GreenPlay, spanning 20 years, builds on a strong foundation of 24 years of Parks and Recreation administration with nearly half of that as Director of the City of Boulder, Colorado, Parks and Recreation Department. Armed with a teaching degree in addition to her P&R Administration degree, Chris has passionately helped move our profession forward, taking advantage of opportunities to serve in leadership and faculty positions ranging from non-profits and foundations, to the NRPA Rocky Mountain Revenue and Management School, and the National Association of Park Foundations. As a Certified Parks and Recreation Executive, a fellow of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, and experienced consultant she continues to help organizations remain relevant in our ever-changing environment. Angus has enjoyed a career in senior academic leadership across a number of leading British universities, including Loughborough and Lancaster where he served as business school Dean. The Dean’s role is endlessly fascinating and challenging. While business schools underpin the financial performance of contemporary universities they are frequently regarded as intellectual inferiors by many traditional academic disciplines. In parallel, while universities are lethargic bureaucracies dominated the academic community, the markets facing business schools are multifaceted and dynamic. As a business school Dean, you are endlessly managing such tensions.Creating an entrepreneurial ethos and building ambitious teams has lain at the very heart of Angus’s leadership across all the business schools where he has worked. Central to this has been articulating a compelling vision for the future of the School which connects the values of the academic community with the evolving market opportunities. He has led major reorganisation projects both as Dean at Loughborough University and as Chair of the Chartered Association of Business Schools which transformed the performance and standing of both organisations. Being a glutton for punishment he is currently attempting the same at Lancaster University with the Work Foundation.#InspiringLeadership #leadership #CEOs #MotivationalSpeaker #teamcoach #Boards See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

How do you make a ‘good' cup of tea? From a flavour perspective you may think about factors such as the quality of the leaves, the temperature of the water, the brewing time, or – that most divisive of questions – if/when to add milk. But what makes a ‘good' cup of tea in terms of ethics, social responsibility, and sustainability? There have long been concerns around these issues within the tea industry, with reports of very poor pay, child labour, and appalling working conditions leaving many consumers with a bitter aftertaste. One business attempting to balance growth opportunities with high ethical standards is boutique loose leaf blender, Suki Tea. Founded in 2005 by business partners Annie Irwin and Oscar Woolley, Suki Tea has grown to become a strong contender in the UK's loose-leaf tea market. In this episode of the QMS Good Business Podcast, Annie joins Dr Laura Steele to discuss how to make a ‘better brew' that respects both people and planet. Each year it is estimated that a staggering 1.6 billion tonnes of food worth approximately $1.2 trillion USD goes to waste. This equates to around one third of the food produced globally. At the same time, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation states that around 815 million people – 10.7% of the global population – are suffering from chronic undernourishment. Addressing the problem of food sustainability and unnecessary waste is likely to become even more pressing in future, with the earth's population predicted to rise to approximately 9 billion by 2050. This increase, accompanied by a steady trend towards urbanisation, will place enormous demands on the global food supply. So, what role can we play in terms of addressing the social and environmental impact of unsustainable food practices and the waste that can result? In this episode of the QMS Good Business Podcast, Dr Laura Steele is joined by Kerry Melville, of the Belfast Food Network and Jilly Dougan, author, activist, and entrepreneur for a wide-ranging discussion around these issues. The advent of the digital camera, which was subsequently embedded into our smartphones, revolutionised photography. But while the technology has advanced at an astonishing rate, individuals and organisations have been left grappling with a host of accompanying ethical concerns. These range from the morality of manipulating images, to issues of theft and plagiarism, and even whether a person can truly give informed consent where there is a power imbalance between the photographer and their subject.
