Farm and Forest Schooling for Kids Guest Kelly McNiff, Founder, Farm and Forest Education Center at Pat's Pastured Our food purchasing choices impact both our physical health and environmental sustainability. We can empower children and families by teaching how real food is produced. Fresh fruits, vegetables, eggs and chickens that are regeneratively grown by local farms are far more nutritious and more sustainable than highly-processed food products shipped thousands of miles to distant markets. The Farm and Forest Education Center at Pat's Pastured is a local non-profit that helps students explore how good food is grown, giving them the opportunity to observe and care for farm animals and their surrounding environment. Pat's Pastured is a local Rhode Island Farm with more than 150 acres of green pasture and woodlots. Humanely-raised livestock moves through rotational pastures with plenty of space to roam free. In 2016, Kelly McNiff, who co-runs the farm with her husband, began running a summer camp in partnership with her sister, Stacy Gale. Kelly is a certified elementary teacher with over 15 years of classroom experience. She earned her undergraduate degree from Northeastern University and pursued her graduate studies at the Teton Science School in Wyoming, where she discovered her passion for place-based learning and outdoor education. Kelly brought her fourth grade students from Providence to experience hands-on learning at the farm, and she talks about her observations and the tremendous benefits to her students. The Farm and Forest Education Center now offers afterschool programs and facilitates school field trip experiences. Join us for this episode to hear more. Watch the stage play reading: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOvCadojSGY Get to know the writer: What is your screenplay about? Ultimately it's about loneliness and how if can look different through grief or mental illness. Some people struggle with it and seem to function well (career, appearing ‘normal') and others seems devastated emotionally and outwardly. Each of my main characters deal with it in different ways, but the fact is human beings need connection. What genres does your screenplay fall under? This is a slice of life drama. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie? I think resilience is always something that speaks to audiences. In spite of real challenges of grief and mental illness, it's important to own your challenges and work through them. How would you describe this script in two words? Humanely complex .What movie have you seen the most times in your life? It's a toss up between The Princess Bride, Casablanca and When Harry Met Sally. At different times in my life, I could recite each of them word for word. This week, we are joined by Daniel Roytas from Humanely to discuss many fascinating topics! Daniel is not shy about pushing back on modern conclusions and provides fresh, logical takes on ever-seen observations. Daniel addresses what health means to him but also tackles the question: What is disease? This leads us into a much deeper dive into topics such as the true causes of disease. Daniel provides a beautiful explanation as to why vitamin deficiencies do not have much evidence to back them up and may not be a cause of disease. We go over the specifics of how 'deficiencies' actually manifest as toxicities. We cover specific examples such as Pellagra (16:30), Beriberi (20:20), Scurvy (28:50), etc.We delve into the differences between minerals and vitamins and how vitamins may not actually exist in natural products. Vitamins may be much like viruses, in that they are laboratory artifacts. We also talk about our soils and the problems in our modern agricultural practices. This leads us into discussing food processing and the optimal human diet. This is a significant episode! I hope it provides insight and areas for further research for you all!I hope you enjoy it!Transcripthttps://paragraph.xyz/@beyondterrain/daniel-roytas Follow mehttps://www.instagram.com/beyond.terrain/https://linktr.ee/beyondterrainSupport the Visionhttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/beyondterrainETH: beyondterrain.ethBTC: bc1qqwc470ktgj3l4myqxr5hq67rnlqys0qm98u6f0Support and Learn from Danielhttps://www.instagram.com/humanley/https://www.humanley.com/about-us

In today's session, David Snyder talks about Manifestation and different techniques to control our feelings, desires, and self-development. Listen as he shares different stories and scenarios about manifestation and utilizing the techniques. Tune in to learn more about manifestation, feelings, magic frame techniques, the unconscious mind, the nervous system, and more! Standout Quotes: ● “If it's free, you're always going to pay twice.” ● “There's always things that can be a little bit more that need a little bit more attention.” ● “We are not the way we are because of what happened to us. We are the way we are because of how we recorded what happened to us and how we've been relating to those recordings.” ● “Experience is the shift that absolutely moves the meat forward.” ● “You can be or do or have anything in this life that you want, as long as you're first willing to become the person for whom that thing can happen.” [Quote of David from Taylor Sinclair] ● “You have the keys to transforming your life and the lives of countless others.” ● “If you can point to where you feel it, you can change it.” ● “the part of you that controls everything we're playing with is the same part of you that plays pretend.” · Key Takeaways: ● One of the subconscious mind's primary directives is to protect your life to keep you safe. ● A feeling drives every action humans take: a feeling they want more of or a feeling they want a lot less of. ● We are taught to first run towards the biggest, nastiest, most painful thing in our lives. And that's why we fail. Because our unconscious mind sorts for what's familiar, which is what it's done the longest and strongest. ● The quality of the information you get from your autonomic nervous system is directly related to how you've asked the question. ● We are not broken, and we can be everything we want. But we must be willing to improve ourselves to become the person we want to be. ● The unconscious mind creates a safety rule that protects us from getting hurt from past experiences. ● The act of pointing and reaching creates multiple pathways to the same information in your holographic nervous system. But it creates a synergy between the nervous system's different divisions. Episode Timeline: [00:21] How do we clear an “icky” feeling in our body? [8:39] What is the Magic Frame technique? [Dr David] • "How is having this person in my life making my life better? If the answer is they're not, move on." [Dr David] Key Takeaways: • Take the time to connect with the deep motivations that drive you. Your primal instincts can be harnessed for powerful change. • Embrace the power of visualization and sensory awareness to amplify your affirmations and manifestations. • Once you've anchored your positive feelings and manifestations within you, nothing in the universe can take them away, not even yourself. • Experiment and observe the results. Share your experiences to learn and grow from them. • Recognize that success in life requires both a strong sense of identity and the willingness to take action. • Value the importance of learning and gaining access to knowledge that can empower you. • Realize the significance of unlocking the powers of your subconscious mind and removing energy blocks. • Consider the potential of becoming proficient in energy healing, both for yourself and others. • Taking action is a crucial step towards achieving your goals and desires. • Take control of your life, make conscious choices, and become a cause maker rather than just an effect. • Take advantage of resources that bridge the gap between knowledge and practical application. "In 'How To Manifest Anything You Want In The Shortest Amount Of Time Humanely Possible! Part 1,' David Snyder discussed the power of controlling your emotional state and how it influences your ability to manifest. He believes that there is nothing inside of you that you haven't already overcome and that you can transform your recordings and perceptions. Join in to explore the art of manifesting and the importance of understanding your true dominant thoughts in the journey to realizing your desires." Standout Quotes: • "The way most of us have been exposed to the law of attraction is that you will attract into your life what's in harmony with your dominant thoughts." [Dr David] • "All you have to do is be playful, have as much fun, be as curious as humanly possible, and you will automatically raise your vibration." • "Higher vibrations control lower vibrations; it's a law of physics." • "The two fastest ways to change your body feelings are to change your posture and to change your breathing. Your physiology controls your psychology." • "Your physiology can make you feel like a winner or a loser, and you have the power to control it." • "There is nothing inside of you that you haven't already beaten. There's just a part of you that doesn't realize it yet." • "Remember a time when you felt the most amazing, thrilling, fulfilling, all-encompassing pleasure ever. As long as it's powerful pleasure, or victory or joy, it's going to be a higher vibration that you can work with." Key Takeaways: • Understand that your dominant thoughts are crucial in what you attract into your life. Focus on aligning your dominant thoughts with your desired outcomes. • Realize that there are multiple laws and principles at work in the Universe, and it's essential to explore and understand them to make the law of attraction work effectively. • Embrace playfulness and curiosity as tools to raise your vibration. It's a scientifically proven way to enhance your perception, adaptability, intelligence, resourcefulness, and persuasiveness. • Recognize that your energy and vibration significantly impact how others respond to you. By being more playful and light-hearted, you can influence others positively. • Acknowledge that positive energies like love and gratitude have higher vibrations than negative ones. Cultivate these positive energies to attract more positive experiences into your life. • Avoid using affirmations only when you're in a bad mood. Instead, make them a regular part of your daily routine to maintain a higher vibration consistently." • Remember that the law of attraction is not just about wishful thinking; it's about aligning your thoughts, emotions, and actions with your desires to manifest your desired outcomes. • Realize that the power to change your state is within you. You can choose to feel like a winner and achieve your goals by controlling your mindset and body. • Acknowledge the importance of anchoring positive emotions and colors within yourself. These can serve as a source of strength and protection against negativity and self-doubt. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Why Certify? Aquatic Life Institute's Impact Implementation Via Seafood Certification, published by Tessa @ ALI on November 8, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Snapshot Aquatic Life Institute has recently launched the second edition of the Aquaculture Certification Schemes Benchmark . These schemes collectively certify, at minimum, 773 million fishes and 10.5 billion shrimps annually. For every $1 of funding received, we have potentially helped improve the lives of 5,423 fish and 221,343 shrimp directly through our engagement with these certifiers. 444: Four R's for Formative Change In 2019, Aquatic Life Institute (ALI) embarked on a journey to reduce the suffering for trillions of aquatic animals in the global food system each year. This past September, ALI established 4 Key Principles to help guide our interventions for systemic transformation in aquatic animal welfare that are used to filter organizational priorities: Reduce the number of animals in, or remove animals from, the seafood system and its supply chain. Refine the conditions in which animals are currently kept or captured in the seafood system and its supply chain. Replace animal products with sustainable plant-based or cell-based alternatives to the extent possible in the seafood system and its supply chain. Reject the introduction of additional animals into the seafood system and its supply chain. In alignment with these 4 principles, we have worked with seafood certifications for years, building relationships and fostering change via our Certifier Campaign. Certification Landscape Between 51 and 167 billion farmed fish [1] are produced annually from global aquaculture operations. Although there are examples of good welfare practices in aquaculture, the concept of what officially constitutes "humanely-raised fish" or a "high welfare seafood product" is still largely undefined worldwide by the public, industry, animal welfare organizations, and most governments. As institutions certifying aquatic animal products begin incorporating positive welfare standards into their seafood labeling programs, they must diligently define high welfare products based on the best available scientific evidence rather than rely on subpar industry norms. "Humanely-raised" aquaculture standards must include more than just stunning before slaughter; they should consider animal welfare conditions throughout the stages of their lives in production. The farmed aquatic animals living in aquaculture facilities at any given time need to be prioritized. Aquaculture standards must also account for additional aquatic animals not directly used for human consumption, such as animals reduced to fishmeal and fish oil ingredients, cleaner fish, and broodstock. Consumers turn to seafood labeling schemes for guidance to avoid purchasing products that conflict with sustainable and humane practices. More than 100 certifications and ratings programs of one type or another are currently in use by the seafood industry. [2], and volumes of certified farmed fish and shellfish constitute about 8% of global aquaculture production [3]. The amount of certified aquatic animal products is only expected to increase. There is no evidence that certification will be phased out anytime in the near future, given consumers' increasing demand for sustainable seafood and the absence of a better alternative [4]. Some schemes are reporting notable growth and others are discussing the aggressive expansion of their operations to certify a greater number of seafood products in various regions. However, many of these labels lack explicit considerations for positive animal welfare or fail to provide adequate protections. Through our Certifier Campaign, we aim to hold seafood certification standards accountable and highlight the schemes that provide the most robust...
There has been a lot of outrage over a video which shows EFF leader Julius Malema struggling to slaughter a cow as part of the build up to the party's 10th birthday celebrations. Lester Kiewit speaks to Angus McIntosh, CEO of Farmer Angus, about the humane manner in which animals should be slaughtered. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
I discuss something different today: what is it like to own a cow farm and raise cattle? As a UC warrior, how can I eat grain-fed beef? Why is humanely raised grain-fed beef better than grass-fed beef? PLEASE NOTE: I do not discuss the graphic details of processing cows; however, some details may be disturbing to those who are vegan for humane reasons or sensitive when discussing animals. *I am not a doctor, therapist, or health professional in any way. In 2017, the State of Massachusetts said they sure can in the groundbreaking case of Massachusetts v Carter where a young woman was convicted of manslaughter over the self-inflicted death of her alleged boyfriend. We will discuss their two-year relationship and the key moment in which the prosecution says made her liable for his death. Drug use is highly stigmatized not only within U.S. society, but within our health care system as well. This is all the more concerning in the context of HIV care, given the stigmas already associated with HIV. But it's within our power as health care providers to change that. In this month's episode, Joshua Barocas, M.D., of University of Colorado School of Medicine, explains how -- and why it's both cost-effective and morally imperative to do so. How we perceive something impacts the decisions we make when buying or selling it. That in turn shapes consumers perceptions and then the market. Tea has long been a part of the coffeehouse, but has suffered from a severe lack of attention and intentionality. As a result the way we represent tea in many cafes has a negative impact of the tea farmer in effectively disappearing their work and craft. These are the types of issues that today's guest has sought to address. After leaving her corporate job Annie Xiang founded Volition Tea. As an Asian American owned business is core to how Volition operates with every decision centering around serving their community and the farmers whom we have the privilege to know. Instead of focusing on transparency and direct-trade for the sake of marketing, Volition shares the stories of tea farmers to cultivate empathy across communities. Through their intensive focus, highly curated offerings, and education Volition is making a real impact. In this interview we will be talking with Annie all about how Volition began, its values, and the practical ways we can adjust our mindsets and practices to usher in a better future for tea and tea farmers through our cafes. We discuss: Starting volition How tea farmers are unique Telling their story Breaking down the Types of tea How to curate your menu Getting staff exited about tea Tapping into the tea market True transparency in tea Training people in tea Tips for selecting, storing, and using Re-steeping Sourcing and relationships Links: www.volitiontea.com @volitionteaco on IG Related Episodes: 282 : How to Listen to your Customers How to talk to Customers about Coffee 361: Managing Roastery Relationships and Logistics w/ Corey Turner of Andytown Coffee Roasters Eliminating menu items Humanely 080 : Changing things in the Cafe : A workflow for Refinement 002: Master Your Workflow w/ Ryan Soeder Interested in leveling up your coffee shop? Today's episode of the podcast is an interview with Sarah Santacroce, who talks all about humane marketing and her alternative model to the traditional 7 P's of marketing. I always love talking about this sort of stuff, as I think it's helpful to have open conversations about some of the marketing tools and tactics that are commonly used, because I have fallen for them and I'm sure many of you have too! What I really love about this episode is that we talk about how to actually market our business in a way that fits with us, and Sarah has some really interesting takes on why we should look at who we are, rather than looking at our avatar. KEY TAKEAWAYS COVERED IN THE PODCAST What is wrong with traditional marketing What humane marketing looks like How to know when you're doing humane marketing THE ONE THING YOU NEED TO REMEMBER ABOVE ALL ELSE Humane marketing starts with awareness, the fact you're even mindful of it, is a great first step! HIGHLIGHTS YOU SIMPLY CAN'T MISS The 7 P's of humane marketing How we bring more empathy into the business world Why humane marketing is still about selling, just in a compassionate way LINKS TO RESOURCES MENTIONED IN TODAY'S EPISODE Sarah's Website Sarah's LinkedIn The 7 P's of Humane Marketing TRANSCRIPT Hello and welcome to this week's episode of the podcast. How are you doing? So we have an interview and if you listen to my episode last week, which hopefully you did, and if you haven't, go and take a listen cause it's, I was gonna say it's a good one. That always sounds so like full on. Like, I'm so amazing. Go listen to it. No. It covers a lot of good stuff. Oh man. And also, I talk about what's happening with the podcast, which is the fact that my interviews are gonna be stopping soon. So I have literally after this one, another three interviews, and that's it. And then it's just me. So if you wanna find out more on why I've done that, then obviously go back and listen to episode 267. But this week we have the lovely Sarah who talks about humane marketing and it's a really lovely conversation and actually probably quite an interesting one given. And I always taught love talking about this sort of stuff, and I try not to go on about it all too much because sometimes I think it can sound like we're being very negative and it's not that at all. I think it's helpful to have open conversations about some of these marketing tools and tactics that are used because I have fallen for them and Sarah has fallen for them. And also what I really love about this episode is we talk about how to actually do it in a way that fits with us. And she kind of has some really interesting takes on us looking at who we are rather than necessarily looking our other task straight off the bat. So I find that really, really interesting and she's so lovely and we've met a few times and I've been on her podcast and it's one of those people that she just kept being put back in my world and back in my world. So sometimes you have to go, I think we should be having a conversation, but it's a really, really good conversation. I know you're gonna like it, and like I said, enjoy it. We've only got a few of these interviews left. So I will hand you over to the lovely Sarah, and I will see you in a bit. Okay. I am really excited to welcome to the podcast today, the lovely Sarah Santacroce. Sarah, how are you doing? Sarah: I'm...

Jim Ondrusek There are as many opinions on what humans should eat as there are ways to make food. Of course, not everyone chooses to eat animal proteins, but if you do, you might also care about how the animals are raised and the process behind getting that pork chop to your plate. And if there's anyone qualified to answer those questions, it's Jim Ondrusek, the VP of Pederson's fresh pork. Jim's been in the meat industry for 46 years, and his family has for 110 years. In this episode, Neil and Jim discuss the details of humanely raising pigs in a way that genuinely shows Pederson's appreciation for the lives behind the food they make and the lives of the people that make it possible. There's An Uplifting Movement To Teach CEOs And Executives To Empathetically Treat Workers Humanely After nearly two years of enduring a brutal pandemic, we're having to cope with Omicron surging. Despite the overhang of gloom, we see people striving to make this world a better place. Pre-pandemic it was a standard and accepted practice to have dictatorial CEOs, executives and middle managers rule with an iron fist without any concerns about the mental health and wellbeing of their workers. The virus outbreak has made many leaders rethink the way they manage their staff. In a war-for-talent and Great Resignation era, they finally realized it's imperative to display empathy and enact employee-centric policies and procedures to empower their workforce. From a practical standpoint, taking great care of workers is one of the best ways to attract, recruit and retain people. A leader in this new humanistic approach towards managing people is the Potential Project. The global organization has a bold mission to vastly improve the lives of workers by training and teaching leadership how to effectively and humanely run their companies. The Potential Project, a Danish based consulting firm, has a global roster of top companies advises an impressive roste of corporate clients including Cisco, IKEA, Microsoft, Unilever, Pfizer, Disney and Accenture. The organization educates C-suite executives to keep employees feeling happy and engaged. Potential Project calls for a modern day model for leadership, focused on making work more “human-centric” by prioritizing compassion and reducing busyness and creating a more human work world. Jacqueline Carter, is the director of North America at Potential Project and author of the forthcoming book “Compassionate Leadership: How to do Hard Things in a Human Way.” She is involved with leadership development, change management, consulting, and research along with her colleagues around the world. The management consulting firm has helped over 550,000 individuals at more than 600 clients to adopt new ways of working and leading. Potential Project delivers solutions globally in 28 countries in 17 languages, in-person and digitally. Carter points to Satya Nadella, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, and CHRO Kathleen Hogan as examples of progressive leadership. She says that the tech giant exemplifies what new leadership really looks like—the ability to combine a drive for high performance with a drive for high care for employees. In an interview on Yahoo news, Carter said about Nadella, I think he's humble and he's really committed to being able to support the development of people. She highlights that the tech CEO possesses two attributes that are the cornerstone of leadership. The first is having a growth mindset. This mindset means you are willing to let go of things that don't work and switch gears to try different ways of innovating. Nadella's leadership is built upon his focus on empathy. He has the ability to see, feel and connect with others. He infused these two principles into the culture of Microsoft. Carter says that this is what employees today are looking for. They want leaders to be able to make sure that they can make the tough decisions, drive the results, and also create an environment of flexibility, where workers feel cared for, connected and have a sense of belonging, meaning and purpose. One of the ways to do this is by offering daily pulse checks to determine how the staff is feeling. It's just a simple question to all of their employees worldwide and to be able to find out, how are we doing today?

In Edible-Alpha® podcast #99, FFI farm financial consultant Andy Larson interviews Larissa McKenna, humane farming program director of Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT). Founded in 1982, this Chicago-based nonprofit holds the vision that all food-producing animals be raised in a healthy and humane manner and that everyone has access to safe and humanely produced food. FACT offers grants, scholarships, mentorship and webinars for farmers nationwide to give them the skills and resources to raise animals on well-managed pasture-based systems. Though not a certifying agency, FACT helps farmers take steps toward particular production principles. As Larissa explains, these include ensuring that animals, at minimum, get adequate space, access to the outdoors, clean water and air, the opportunity to express natural behaviors, and natural, healthful diets. Also, antibiotics should be used only when disease is present. As more consumers are learning about the variation in animal production methods, they are increasingly demanding humanely produced products. FACT helps educate shoppers about packaging labels and claims—which ones are meaningful, which are not—to guide their purchasing decisions. Larissa walks through some of the most reliable third-party certifications, such as Certified Animal Welfare Approved, Certified Humane and Animal Welfare Certified and the American Grassfed Association's standards. Such certifications can aid farmers' business by boosting brand awareness, opening grant opportunities and, of course, improving animal welfare. However, certification isn't always the goal of the farmers Larissa works with—and that's perfectly OK. FACT's mission is to help them improve their production methods, and different farmers have different starting points. For example, some are moving from conventional confinement systems while others come to FACT with some humane practices already in play. Regardless of specific circumstances, Larissa lauds the farmers' innovation, creativity and cost-efficiency in figuring out ways to improve their systems. There is often a strong economic case for making these changes to complement their multiple environmental and animal-welfare benefits. Lastly, Andy and Larissa discuss FACT's myriad offerings, including webinars and trainings covering topics such as grazing management and livestock protection, as well as grants for on-farm improvement projects and scholarships for outside education. And in response to farmer demand for more business- and finance-related assistance, FACT is now teaming up with FFI to offer free boot camps and webinars starting this fall. Our mutual goal in providing these valuable opportunities is to help livestock and poultry farmers' businesses thrive, so learn more and apply today!
GAP, the Global Animal Partnership, gives a "Humane Raised" Certification to meat products that can end up duping consumers, a PETA undercover investigation has exposed. At Plainville Farms, PETA video shows how animals are abused routinely. But the worst of it is how the farm sells the turkeys under GAP's "Humanely Raised" certification, backed by the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the U.S. It's a sham. Beware. GAP has suspended the farm, and the workers there have been terminated. But turkeys are still being sold. PETA VP Dan Paden said he's presented the video to the Pennsylvania State police for prosecution on animal welfare laws. Don't be fooled by the GAP label on any products. Paden says the "humane raised" marketing scheme is a sham. Beware. Paden talks to Emil Guillermo about the investigation. See the video here. For more go to PETA.org. On Episode 13 of the Pursuit of Health podcast, Dr. Fethke invites his own most influential mentor, Dr. Welton M. Gersony - a pioneer and world-class Pediatric Cardiologist - to remind us all of the importance of maintaining the fundamentals of Patient-Physician Communication. Over the past 5 decades Dr. Gersony has been one of the most influential physician leaders in American Pediatrics and, specifically, Dr. Fethke's own field of Pediatric Cardiology. Dr. Gersony received his medical degree at the State University of NY-Upstate Medical Center, completed his General pediatric training at Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland, Ohio and his fellowship training at The Boston Children's Hospital of Harvard Medical School. In 1968 he founded Columbia University's Division of Pediatric Cardiology where he served as the division chief and the Alexander Nadas Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia University's College of P&S until 2007. Several landmark medical achievements occurred under his watch at Columbia including the first successful pediatric heart transplant in 1984, and the foundation of the Pulmonary Hypertension and Adult Congenital Heart Centers. His myriad distinguished services include being the past Chair of AHA Council of CVDY, the ABP Subboard of Cardiology and the Steering Committee of the World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. He is the 2003 recipient of the AHA's Distinguished Service Award and the 2007 Founder's Award of AAP. He has served on multiple editorial boards and was a Consulting Editor for Circulation medical journal. He is recognized as a pioneer in our understanding of the course of congenital heart defects through his work as a Principle Investigator for the 1st and 2nd studies of the Natural History of Congenital Heart Defects. He has authored more than 300 papers and chapters as well as one of the first major textbooks dealing with Congenital Heart Disease in the Adult. Amongst all of his successes he remains most proud of his recognition as a world-class teacher of future generations of pediatric cardiologists, having trained 120 Pediatric Cardiology fellows during his over 35 year tenure at Columbia University - consistently demonstrating an uncanny ability to know peoples' strengths and potential even before they see it in themselves. During part 1 of this episode, Dr. Gersony takes us through the mechanics of the all important first patient visit as he has personally demonstrated for so many of his students. He stresses that this visit lays the groundwork for the trust between a physician and patient family that is critical to the patient's future success. He urges us to “let them tell their story” without injecting our own assumptions and biases. He explains how important it is to be aware of harmful nonverbal cues that we send patients. He humbly advises that we never consider ourselves to be 100% infallible, but rather maintain open communication between our patients and their referring physicians. He finishes this first episode with an emphasis on maintaining Hope, even in the face of serious illness and bad news. Ultimately his message is that “Taking the time up front, saves time later”. Next time in Part 2 of Episode 13, Dr. Fethke picks up the conversation with Dr. Gersony as he discusses how to Humanely give Bad News to a patient and family while avoiding the family's natural feelings of Fear and Guilt. You can follow Dr. Eric Fethke on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok @drfethkemd(This episode will also available in video format on Youtube @drfethkemd).

All captive lions or lions bred for commercial use must be ethically and humanely euthanised. This is one of the recommendations of the High Level Panel appointed by Forestry, Fisheries and Environment minister Barbara Creecy. The panel investigated the management, breeding, hunting, trade and handling of five of South Africa's iconic animals - namely elephant, lion, leopard and white and black rhino. The panel also recommended that the status quo of South Africa not trading internationally with rhino horn, remains.
Chuck Wakeman is passionate about being a butcher. With more than 20 years of experience that started in Chicago ,and included stints at Vintage Cave, Pig and Lady and Maui's The Mill House, Wakeman operates his Kakaako butcher shop and deli just like a neighborhood butcher should. He's available for questions, happy to share his knowledge and recipes, skilled at the art of dry -aging and sausage making, ( to name just two of his many talents), and creator of one of the best burgers in Honolulu. We could have talked to him for the entire hour... but we ran out of time.... you can find out more about the Butcher and Bird here, and for a true artisanal experience, go visit Chuck and his team at their Kakaako location. If only every neighborhood had a Butcher and Bird! And in keeping with our meaty topic, we checked in with Pono Pork founder, Bob McGee. Bob's also been passionate about butchery and a strong advocate of the nose to tail movement for decades. At Pono Pork he's helping to educate his growing customer base on the importance of using every part of the animal. Humanely reared pigs and a belief that no animal part should be wasted, make Bob one of our favorite guests. Enjoy! Jo

Jake Muise is an avid hunter, environmentalist, and advocate for the preservation of Hawaii’s natural resources. He is the founder of Maui Nui Venison, a company which actively manages Hawaii’s imbalanced population of axis deer by harvesting them as a food resource. In this episode, Jake tells his unbelievable backstory growing up in Northern Alberta before landing in Hawaii on a volleyball scholarship where he fell in love with the islands and the people. Jake explains how axis deer—a non-native species—were brought to the islands and how they have since become imbalanced to the detriment of Hawaii’s precious ecosystems. He goes on to explain the incredible lengths that his company has taken to ensure the most humane harvesting techniques imaginable resulting in a food source that is as clean and healthful as can be. Additionally, Jake and Peter examine what makes meat from axis deer one of the most nutrient-dense red meats on the planet. We discuss: Upbringing in Northern Alberta, a diet of moose meat, and learning to surf in Nova Scotia (3:35); How volleyball brought Jake to Hawaii where he met the Molokai people (14:00); Jake’s introduction to axis deer (26:30); Pro volleyball in Europe, missing the Olympic team by one spot, and his return to Hawaii (29:00); History of axis deer in Hawaii—how a non-native species came to the islands, and the superpowers that make them so hard to hunt (34:00); A potential catastrophe avoided on The Big Island—The amazing story of how Jake tracked and found axis deer that were secretly brought to The Big Island (52:15); Jake’s work helping ranchers on Maui (1:08:15); The detrimental impact of an imbalanced axis deer population (1:10:30); The incredible evacuation of farm animals from lava-locked land due to a volcano eruption (1:17:00); The creation of Maui Nui Venison—going above and beyond USDA requirements (1:27:00); The most humane way to harvest an animal—the unmatched standards Maui Nui Venison uses to harvest axis deer (1:32:00); Why meat from axis deer is nutritionally superior (and tastes better) than other meats (1:46:00); Why axis deer meat is the best option for those reluctant to eat meat: True nose-to-tail nutrition and ethical harvesting (1:58:15); What a truly balanced population of axis deer on Hawaii would look like (2:06:15); Maui Nui Venison’s charitable work during the COVID crisis (2:12:45); and More. For Tera's final Edible-Alpha® Live! famous founder interview, she spoke with Paul Willis, director and founding hog farmer of Niman Ranch. An ardent animal welfare advocate, he helped transform the pork industry by scaling up the humanely raised, free-range model. A longtime Iowa hog farmer, Paul proudly raised pigs on pasture, but by the 1990s, CAFOs were threatening to put little guys like him out of business. The message, he told Tera, was to “get bigger or get out.” Paul refused to do either and began exploring his options. Knowing most Iowans at the time wouldn't pay a premium for his pork—or purchase more than just the chops—he spent years looking for a viable market. Eventually, he met Bill Niman, who was successfully marketing humanely raised beef in and around San Francisco, a much more progressive food scene. Paul sent Bill a pork chop, Bill loved the taste and Paul's values, and a partnership was born. Paul formed Niman Ranch Pork Company and began sending hogs to the West Coast for processing and sale. Under a hybrid LLC–co-op model, the company grew its network of farmers to meet increasing demand, guaranteeing them a premium for their animals plus stock in the company. Also, from the get-go, Paul wanted a way to distinguish his humane methods from those of CAFOs. There wasn't an official recognized standard back then, so he helped create the Certified Humane standard, now a trusted, widely known seal. The money held as farmers' stock provided working capital for the company to continue scaling. That, plus a forgivable loan from the Iowa Department of Economic Development, furthered its growth, and landing Whole Foods Market and later Chipotle as customers helped turn Niman Ranch into a sought-after national brand. As more consumers nationwide have woken up the value of humanely raised, free-range pork, demand has only intensified. A few years back, family-owned Perdue Farms bought out Niman Ranch along with its specialty processor. Because Perdue was rich in resources, the co-op was disbanded and farmers paid back every penny. Paul stayed on as director to ensure Niman Ranch's values and commitments to farmers were upheld under new corporate ownership. “The integrity of everything we do is 100% intact,” Paul said. “It's even better today because we have some money.” In fact, his influence has even prompted Perdue to improve its animal welfare practices. Paul is proud that today Niman Ranch has 700 farmers and ranchers in its network. Although he could certainly call it quits after all he's accomplished, he's not ready just yet—which, Tera noted, is our gain, because the food world needs Paul Willis. His passion and innovation have helped hundreds of small farmers and ranchers stay in business while offering consumers nationwide more sustainable—and better tasting—protein choices. Tune in to Tera's full interview with Paul, as well her chats with other famous founders from Edible-Alpha® Live!

Long before humanoid robots look like us, we will be able to have conversations with our smartphones that will evoke from us all the empathy that adults habitually reserve for fellow human beings. That is, we will own assistants and companions that will feel to us like persons but (unlike pets) will be entirely at our disposal. With assistance from antiquity, and in engagement with such contemporary philosophers of mind as Daniel Dennett, Prof. Jordan Wales (Hillsdale) discusses how we might live humanely in a world of artificial intelligence by taking up four questions: First, how would an apparently personal AI work? Second, what might this entity be? Third, what might we become, owning apparent persons that are mere tools? Lastly, how might we live as owners of apparent persons in such a way as to enhance rather than to erode our own humanity?
Tom Crutchfield is undoubtedly one of the most well-known names in American Herpetoculture. As one of my previous guests put it, "what Tom hasn't done in the hobby, isn't worth doing".
