236: Will Home Renovation Costs Go Down in 2024 as Demand Begins to Dip? w/WSJ's Ryan Dezember

For the past four years, everyone, and we mean everyone, has been doing some form of home improvement. All your friends are redoing their kitchens, your spouse keeps asking when you can renovate the bathrooms, and your best friend just built their dream home office with—don't get too excited—recessed lighting. This was the home renovation boom of the decade, and now, we could be at the tail end of it. With home improvement spending starting to dip, interest rates keeping homeowners from big projects, and labor costs still sky-high, what happens when enough demand leaves the market? Do material prices fall as manufacturers try to lure homeowners back in? Will labor costs soften with contractors waiting for work? We brought on The Wall Street Journal's Ryan Dezember to get some answers. In today's show, we discuss the boom and bust of lumber prices, why home renovations are starting to stall, what impact this could have on materials, and whether or not the home improvement spree will pick back up as new construction starts decline. If you're planning a home renovation, you'll want to hear this episode before you begin. In This Episode We Cover An update on the home renovation industry and why demand is shrinking  Labor costs and the factory-building boom that's taking away all the contractors The surprisingly old age of most American homes and why so many renovations happened High interest rates and their effects on home improvement project spending Whether or not we're already in the home renovation “slowdown” and what could happen next  And So Much More! Episode Notes Washington, D.C. will spend roughly $20 million in an upcoming campaign to help boost the city's lagging tourism recovery, writes Global Tourism Reporter Dawit Habtemariam.  The global campaign — called “There's Only One DC” — will launch November 1. Habtemariam reports the campaign will support influencer collaborations, as well as advertising on social media and television. Destination DC, the city's destination marketing organization, hopes the funding injection will help it in its efforts to attract international travelers. Washington, D.C. welcomed 1.2 million foreign tourists last year, which was just 60% of its pre-Covid figure. Habtemariam cited the absence of Chinese tourists, the city's largest visitor market pre-pandemic, as one reason for Washington, D.C.'s international slump.  Next, U.S. hotel group Sonesta is facing a lawsuit about how it displays resort fees on its website and app, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. The suit alleges that Soneta made tens of millions annually since at least 2017 by not disclosing upfront its mandatory resort and destination fees at some of its properties. O'Neill writes Sonesta isn't alone in not disclosing those fees upfront. He adds all of the major hotel groups and many smaller hotels brands have engaged in the practice of junk fees in recent decades.  Lauren Wolfe, a counsel from consumer advocacy group Travelers United, said lawsuits against more companies regarding so-called junk fees are coming. Travelers United filed the class-action suit against Sonesta.  Finally, Airbnb and New York City have often had a rocky relationship, once marked by lawsuits and numerous disputes. Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden provides a timeline documenting the tension between the city and the short-term rental giant over the past 10 years.  Jorden lists the major twists and turns in New York City's and Airbnb's relationship using Ask Skift, our artificial intelligence chatbot, and additional reporting. Airbnb has sued the city twice — including this June over measures the company called a “de facto ban” against short-term rentals. That recent lawsuit was dismissed by a judge.  In addition, Airbnb is staring at the prospect of a steep reduction in New York City listings starting September 5. That's when city authorities said they would start enforcing its host registration law for short-term rentals.

Cronobacter sakazakii, the bacteria linked to recent baby formula shortages and the Abbott infant formula recall, could soon join the federal disease watchlist. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about Cronobacter sakazakii, a bacteria that can cause severe infections, particularly in infants, and is associated with high mortality rates. It is commonly found in the environment, including in water, soil and dry foods such as powdered infant formula. In an outbreak that the CDC investigated last year, four babies were sickened, including two who died. In June, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) will vote to decide if it will officially recommend adding Cronobacter infections to the list of nationally notifiable diseases to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Currently, only Minnesota and Michigan require doctors to report Cronobacter cases, which can be diagnosed as sepsis or meningitis, conditions that can result from infection. Also in this episode, Sydney talks about Coca-Cola owned Fairlife milk, which will receive a significant boost of $650 million as the company prepares to construct a new production facility in Webster, upstate New York. The Fairlife milk brand was founded in 2012 by husband and wife duo Mike and Sue McCloskey to offer a new type of milk that could provide families with better nutrition from the wholesome goodness of real milk. Fairlife milk boasts 50 percent higher levels of protein and calcium while containing 50 percent less sugar compared to traditional milk, while also being lactose-free. Despite an undercover video showing workers at one of Fairlife's milk suppliers abusing calves and subsequent lawsuits, Fairlife milk has been dominating the milk category, earning over $1 billion in annual retail sales in 2022. The team asserts that animal abuse is not exclusive to Fairlife and wonders whether consumers seek value-added milk.Read the full article here:Cronobacter Sakazakii: The Bacteria Behind the Baby Formula ShortageFairlife Milk Gets $650 Million Bet from Coca-ColaFor more food and beverage industry content, visit the Xtalks Vitals homepage.Follow Us on Social Media Twitter: @XtalksFood Instagram: @Xtalks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Xtalks.Webinars/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/xtalks-webconferences YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/XtalksWebinars/featured

Can XRP Replace Money with Bank Meltdowns - Big Retail Loses - FED Turning Dollars into Digital Currency (CBDC) Last week was eventful in the finance world. Amid growing concerns over bank meltdowns and the Federal Reserve's plan to convert dollars into digital currency, there were a few very significant developments. First, Silicon Valley Bank UK gave millions of pounds in bonuses to its employees, just after being rescued by HSBC for a nominal £1. This move has generated criticism and controversy as many believe that the bank should have used the money to stabilize its finances. Then we saw midsize banks in the US ask for government insurance on all deposits for two years, to protect against potential losses due to increasing bank failures. In other news, the well known XRParcade, an XRP Centric News website dedicated to XRP cryptocurrency news and updates, announced that it will be shutting down. The reason cited was the high costs associated with maintaining the site. A Massive $1 Million BET offered by entrepreneur and investor Balaji Srinivasan that the price of Bitcoin will increase in the next 90 days. He has set impressive odds of 40:1, given his belief that hyperinflation could render the US dollar nearly worthless. The latest developments over the past weeks have raised concerns over the stability of traditional banking and the potential of cryptocurrency to replace money in the future - could it be XRP! *** *SUPPORT ON THE CHAIN* JOIN THE CHANNEL https://otc.one/join OTC MERCH https://onthechain.shop BUY US A COFFEE https://otc.one/buy-us-a-coffee Support ON THE CHAIN https://otc.one/support -------------- *ON THE CHAIN* SUBSCRIBE TO THE OTC PODCAST: https://otc.one/podcast Subscribe to our other Youtube Channel: https://otc.one/onthechain On The Web: https://onthechain.io Follow OTC on Twitter: https://otc.one/otc Join On The Chain Community on Twitter https://twitter.com/i/communities/1599435678995062788 Join our FREE Telegram Roundtable channel: https://t.me/onthechain_roundtable -------------- *JEFF* Follow Jeff on Twitter: https://otc.one/jeff -------------- *CHIP* Follow Chip on Twitter: https://otc.one/chip Listen to Chip's music http://nojoyyet.com -------------- *DISCLAIMER:* _All opinions expressed by content contributors that appear on OTC are solely expressing their opinions and do not reflect the opinions of OTC, its affiliates, or sponsors. On June 15th, Hindenburg struck again, this time targeting popular sports gambling and fantasy sports company DraftKings (DKNG).Some well-known investors in DraftKings include Walt Disney (DIS), WWE (WWE) owner Vince McMahon, and owner of the New England Patriots, Robert Kraft. DraftKings also has lucrative partnerships with the NFL, MLB, NHL, NASCAR, UFC, and the Dish Network.A lot of potential brands could be hurt by these allegations if proven true.Wood is well known to target companies she likes long-term that are beaten down. Some examples of this include her continued support of Coinbase (COIN) and Teladoc (TDOC) during their prolonged dips. How much DraftKings did Wood buy? She added $42 million worth or 870,299 shares following Hindenburg's report. The stock now represents the 19th and 17th largest holdings in each ETF respectively. … Who will win?Judging from DraftKings' rise the next day, it looks as though Wood and Ark Invest have taken round one from Hindenburg.

Daily Stock Market News

Here's what is happening in the markets today, Tuesday, May 18th.Stocks are pointing to a higher opening after yesterday's losses.Earnings: Retailers report earning this week and HomeDepot (HD) and Walmart (WMT) kicked it off:HomeDepot's (HD) net sales surged 32.7%, more than expected. HD is already up 20% this year! And Walmart (WMT) is up  1% in premarket trading after reporting strong grocery sales and e-commerce growth for the quarter.Shares of Macy's (M) are up roughly 6% in Tuesday's premarket after Macy's reported 56% increase in Q1 revenue. And they reported a surprise first-quarter profit, as stimulus checks and the ongoing Covid vaccine rollout gave consumers more money and greater confidence to head back to the mall and refresh their wardrobesThe first-quarter earnings season is wrapping up with more than 90% of the S&P 500 companies having reported their results. So far, 86% of S&P 500 companies have reported a positive EPS surprise, which would mark the highest percentage of positive earnings surprises since 2008 when FactSet began tracking this metric.Elon Musk gone too far? Tesla (TSLA) dropped more than 2% as famed investor Michael Burry revealed a big short position on the electric carmaker: $534 million. Tesla is down 18% for the year and 36% from the all-time high of $900 on Jan 25.The reason why Michael Burry is short: In the fourth quarter of 2020, Tesla's $270 million in net income was enabled by its sale of $401 million in regulatory credits to other automakers. Tesla historically has racked up around $1.6 billion in regulatory energy credits,Elon Musk lost his position as the world's second-richest person according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He has been unseated by luxury goods tycoon, LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault. Both billionaires are currently set apart by a few million on the list of the world's wealthiest people:Arnault has amassed a fortune of $161.2 billion, while Musk's has fallen to $160.6 billion, according to Bloomberg. The Fed's minutes from its last meeting, which will be released Wednesday, could offer some clues on policymakers' thinking on inflation. This wraps up today's stock market news.If you enjoyed the "Stock Market Today" video, make sure to subscribe to this podcast. And for more stock market news,  visit https://rockwelltrading.com.#todaysstockmarket #stockmarkettoday #stockmarket

The tennis legend and cult running shoe label On are launching a sneaker together. In the latest edition of the BoF Podcast, Federer shares what's next. ZURICH, Switzerland — It’s been 17 years since Roger Federer won his first Wimbledon championship. Now, the 20-time Grand Slam winner is commemorating the date with the launch of his first sneaker for Swiss running label On. Named “The Roger,” Federer’s debut is inspired by a tennis shoe, but it’s designed to be much lighter and intended for everyday wear, rather than professional sports. As with On’s more performance-driven trainers, the shoe is outfitted with the “CloudTec” technology (a special sole designed to enhance the running experience) for which On is best known. The company’s first “Cloud” performance sneaker, launched in 2010, quickly gained traction among the running community. Federer’s tie-up with On is much more than the typical ambassador-brand relationship. For starters, he invested an undisclosed amount in the company last year, consulting for the brand before signing on to co-develop product. As the tennis star put it to BoF's Imran Amed in an exclusive interview for the BoF Podcast, he wanted to see if it would be possible “to create a deal and partnership that is more than the pay-to-play deal.”   Related Articles: Roger Federer Buys Stake in Swiss Running Shoemaker How Are Sports Brands Marketing Without Sports? Scott Soshnick, Eben Novy-Williams and Michael Barr discuss a host of issues related to the business of sports, including a Houston furniture store owner's $3.5 million bet on the Astros to win the World Series. Jim McIngvale, aka ``Mattress Mack,'' placed the bet as a hedge against a promotion he previously ran in the store that calls for customers to get refunds on purchases of $3,000 or more if the Astros win baseball's championship. The bet would net McIngvale $7.7 million. Also discussed is Nike Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker firing back against a ruling that a company-backed running coach doped athletes as part of a Nike program. In a memo to staff Parker said the experiments with performance-enhancing drugs were meant to prevent doping. Also talked about is Flutter Entertainment's purchase of The Stars Group, creating a betting behemoth. The deal values Stars at about $6 billion. Flutter was formerly known as Paddy Power.  Hosts: Scott Soshnick, Eben Novy-Williams and Michael Barr Producer: Tim Herro
