Markham and Vance narrow the suspects down to 4 men- but more imnportantly, Vance changes Markham's thinking about the nature of the suspect. Vance believes that robbery was not the motive- murder was the motive- and that the killer had planned this all out carefully for a long time. He also believes that Skein was present, hiding in the closet, and saw the murder through the keyhole.

PALISADE 45: Where They Are Pt. 3

Friends at the Table

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2024 117:24

As Palisade eases into its new orbit, the people below face a new marker of evening. Yes, the dual moons of Chimera's Lantern and Travertine remain above them. But now night brings a new absence: Gone are Gift-3 and Seneschal, Altar and Moonlock, Skein and Crown, Brighton and Thrysus, and of course the new dark sun, Volition. And so, at night, with only the Mirage itself in the sky, the people of Palisade might be able to convince themselves that things have not changed so much. And so, on one such night in the Bontive Valley, it is time for one more—one final?—movie night aboard the Blue Channel. Why me, or better, why you? / When we can fake it like any way we want to People Elle Evensong (she/they): Elle arrived to Palisade along with the first wave of Devotees, making a name for herself as a cunning combatant and clever commander. In reality, they work for the Divine, Arbitrage as a double agent. Cori blames them for the death of her father. Pilot of the Cataphract. One of Arbitrage's remaining agents in the Twilight Mirage. General Tomorrow Mourning (she/her): Leader of the Qui'Err Coalition's forces en route to the Twilight Mirage. Gucci Garantine (she/her): A defector from Stel Kesh, who used the remaining wealth and power of House Brightline to help found Millennium Break. Currently a key member of the resistance efforts on Palisade, and a commander of Millenium Break forces there. Codename Watershed. Jesset City (he/him): After helping to kick off Millennium Break on Partizan, Jesset served as one of its major leaders during its expansion across the Principality. Now, he uses his talents in Hollow and Altar engineering, piloting, and cipher breaking on behalf of the Grey Pond unit of the cause. Still considers himself to be a member of the Party of the Wolf, though those designations have largely fallen from use. Mustard Red (she/her): A cyborg who once served as a member of Brink Proxy, with a speciality in surveillance. Joined the Cause during the Devotees expansion onto Palisade. The Witch in Glass a.k.a. Clementine Kesh (she/her): A former scion of Kesh who, after knitting a bond with the adversary Perennial, came into control of the broken body of the Divine Past, which she has renamed the Reflecting Pool. Rules over the Crown of Glass, a city-state on the southeastern reaches of Palisade. A shaky ally of Millennium Break. Now broken with Perennial, she has become the egoist queen of the Iconoclasts. Lucia Whitestar (she/her): The young “Lady Whitestar” emerged as a strategic genius during the early conflict between Kesh and Apostolos on PARTIZAN five years ago. Daughter of the Peaceful Princept, Cynosure Whitestar-Kesh. Commands her forces from her flagship, the Lander One with the support of her combat AI, Fire Support (it/its). Partial Palisade (he/him): A man who was once a Divine, now living in the shell of a being quite unlike what he once was. Exenchester March (he/him): Founder of the Frontier Syndicate and the March Institute, former chair of the Zenith Fund. Betrayed the Pact and Stel Columnar, defecting to the Bilateral Intercession in exchange for territory on Palisade and the freedom to use it as he wishes. August Righteousness (he/they): Once, August served as the court chef of Joyous Guard. Now, he is the commander of Reunion, a Delegate resistance movement that is part of the Cause's Jade Kill unit, and one of the de facto most important leaders of the resistance on Palisade. Organizations The New Asterism: What was once a schism between Received and Progressive Asterism has now been healed by the false prophet Gur Sevraq (he/they), or at least someone in his name and face. The New Asterism claims that to be a citizen of the Principality is to have an obligation to "better the world," in the sense that one invests in property or in the way that a settler “rehabilitates” or “improves” the places they claim by violence. If Received Asterism places virtue in the state and Progressive Asterism places it in the Divines, the New Asterism places it in the Principality's mythologized point of origin: The Twilight Mirage. Fabreal Duchy: When the Divine Principality left Palisade nearly 5,000 years ago, they left behind a Duke and his barons as caretakers. In the generations that followed, they ruled as petty tyrants, creating Delegates as their slaves, remaking their bodies into glass and oil, and extending their reach across Palisade's continents. Though they officially report to their handlers in Stel Kesh, recently they have begun to wonder if things were better before the Principality's return to Palisade. Places Bontive Valley: Blessed by the departed divine Bounty, the Valley provides the Bilats with fruit that never rots and hyper-nutritional grain. Temple of the Threshold: Built at the center of a massive bridge that crosses the Diadem, this serves as the home of New Asterism and its false prophet, The Twilight Mirage: Created over 5000 years ago by what was then the Divine Empyrean in an effort to protect the Divine Fleet, of which they were a member. The Mirage is a false nebula that obscures the position of its inhabitants both visually and by distorting time and space. Inside, there is now a vibrant and peaceful culture that spans eight planets, orbiting a dark and living Divine sun.  Objects FS-N Dais: One of the Altars competing in the tournament, piltoed by Zjenta Zjarule (she/they).  Utilizes a special glass originally from the Twilight Mirage. AdArm Jury: The Jury is the future of AdArm machines. As the first design which fully moves beyond the platforms of the previous generation, it's a startling diversion from the bulky and boxy designs that the company is known for. In fact, the actual “unit” is only the cockpit, around which the rest of the Jury forms using concentrated Perennial Wave Material (PWM). Gone is the old LCD “eye,” replaced by a full pixel “face” that can send complex, laser-based communications silently to any other AdArm unit that can see it, as well as display iconographic messages to anyone nearby. A close study of the machine's curved and ovaline elements suggests that it has much in common with the Motion's Demiurgos design that AdArm salvaged as it does with the company's previous designs…  Divines The Divine Future (they/them, it/its): An ancient divine, dating back to the second major war in the Golden Branch star sector. Exists in the form of golden orb slightly larger than a softball or bocce ball, which can either be carried by or hover around its Elect. Historically, it has been bidden to share its unparalleled perspective on the hopes and dreams of its chosen (and the endless vigor with which to pursue those goals). The Divine Integrity (it/its): Sometimes appearing as an articulated staff or a metallic spine, Integrity integrates itself into its chosen user. Once the two are connected, Integrity becomes a powerful exoskeleton, and supports its user in matters of military and morale. Until being assassinated by Brnine, Dahlia, the Glorious Princept, was the elect of Integrity. Now, it has found a new home in Thisbe. The Divine Motion (she/her): One of the founding members of the Pact, the necromantic Apostolosian divine once led its infamous retinue, the Black Century, on Partizan. They were defeated and dispersed, turned into part of Kalmeria, during Operation Shackled Sun.  The Divine, Arbitrage (it/its): The amoral machine turned de facto treasurer keeps the Frontier Syndicate a step ahead in all matters of commerce. Sole minter of “glint,” a newly popular currency on Palisade. The Divine Crusade (they/them): Leads Stel Nideo's occupation on Palisade along with their Elect, Gentian. Crusade is an enormous, bipedal machine covered (or perhaps made with) beautiful stained glass. Mysteries Volition (it/its): Sometimes called a Divine, sometiems called a "post-Divine," this living orb sits at the center of the Quire system and the Twilight Molition. Sometimes a blistering sun, sometimes a glass-like moon, and often a mix of the two. It was originally built by the Iconoclasts, who believed that human subjectivity should be replaced by sublime purity of objective ideas. To this end, it began to produce Axioms, but eventually it learned to live more happily in relation to people and subjectivity in general. The Iconoclasts: Something beyond the human, desperate to eradicate subjectivity itself. After their messenger, the Usher of Truth, was delivered to The Witch in Glass, they have found themselves serving a new master. Axioms: Once, these beings were made by Volition as embodiments of particular ideals, supposedly detached from mortal perspective or subjectivity. Today, the vast majority of them are the emanation of one woman's ideals, given perfect, violent form. Perennial (she/her):  The Principality's so-called 'adversary,' who lives at the center of the galaxy and whose chaotic whims spread through her "Perennial Wave," an ever-present nanoparticle that has bonded with elements of Autonomy Itself and the Divine Motion to create Kalmeria. Hosted by Austin Walker (@austin_walker) Featuring Janine Hawkins (@bleatingheart) Sylvi Bullet (@sylvibullet), Ali Acampora (@ali_west), Art Martinez-Tebbel (@atebbel), Jack de Quidt (@notquitereal), Keith J Carberry (@keithjcarberry) and Andrew Lee Swan (@swandre3000) Produced by Ali Acampora  Music by Jack de Quidt (available on bandcamp) Text by Austin Walker Cover Art by by aurahack (aurahack.jp) With thanks to Amelia Renee, Arthur B., Bill Kaszubski, Cassie Jones, chocoube, Daniel Laloggia, DB, deepFlaw, Edwin Adelsberger, Emrys, fen, Greg Cobb, Ian O'Dea, Ian Urbina, Irina A., Jack Shirai, Jake Strang, Katie Diekhaus, Ken George, Konisforce, Kristina Harris Esq, L Tantivy, Mike & Ruby, Muna A, Nich Maragos, Olive Perry, Quinn Pollock, Robert Lasica, Shawn Drape, Shawn Hall, Summer Rose, TeganEden, Thomas Whitney, Voi, and weakmint for their support We are playing Armour Astir: Advent with additional playbooks from Strangers in the Night and 106th Astir Squadron. Her Knit Picks Felici Zen Socks had a hole in the foot. It was easy to repair with a bit of yarn. I washed them and they're ready to give back. I only finished these in May 2022, right before Mother's Day so these haven't held up very well. Click here for my Ravelry Project Page. I also did a blanket repair on a knitted blanket a friend's mother asked me to fix. I was assuming it was crochet, so the fact that it was knitted was a surprise. The section that was torn was part of a very long strip of knitting that was knit on the bias, so it was a little tricky but it was in garter stitch and I did a good job of pulling the stitches back up. Its not 100% invisible, but I'm happy with it. I have it washed and ready to return.   Crafty Adventures   Resin adventures with Gayle & Meagan for their Bucket List with a Twist. Life lessons are where you find them. Peggy Orenstein found them in her quest to build a sweater from scratch. When I say that Peggy created a sweater from scratch, I mean wrestling a sheep to the ground and relieving it of its wool. Carding said wool by hand while Zooming with her father, who sometimes knew who she was. Spinning that lovely fluff, with all the typical push-pull-stop-go of a beginning spinner. Dyeing the yarn with colors from her backyard and beyond. After that, knitting the sweater was a breeze, sort of. (And despite the title of her book, Unraveling: What I Learned About Life While Shearing Sheep, Dyeing Wool, and Making the World's Ugliest Sweater, it's definitely not the world's ugliest.) But there were more lessons to be taken from this year-long odyssey. Lessons about fast fashion, regenerative agriculture, ancient goddesses, a planet at risk. The list goes on. The handmade thread, metaphorical or physical, ties together our human history, not neatly but with complicated and important entanglements. Unraveling is not a how-to book. If you know much about any of the steps in the process of turning wool into wardrobe, you will smile or sometimes wince at the author's fearless approach. But so much to think about! She gives us so much to think about! Visit the Long Thread Podcast website (https://longthreadmedia.com/podcast). Rachel Bratcher says, without Covid, Ritual Dyes would've remained a yarn dying studio – not an actual yarn store where people come together for “crafternoons” and get the full sensual experience of her colorful yarn. For her, it all started with having her first child: suddenly, there was this impulse to make something for this new being. From there, knitting slowly grew into a passion and into a business. As Holy Embodied is all about experiences in the body, we want to hear about the sensual pleasure of touching the fluffiest yarns and seeing the most fantastic colorways – and of course, how knitting can be a ritual. Disclaimer: Do not be disencouraged by the knitting lingo! In this episode, Clara talks with Canadian wool advocate, fiber farmer, and mill owner Anna Hunter of Long Way Homestead. Until a few years ago, Anna was happily ensconced in East Vancouver running a yarn store. But in 2015, the country beckoned. She and her husband Luke moved to Eastern Manitoba to start a family and a farm. When she discovered there was no local mill to process her freshly shorn Shetland fleeces, she decided to build a mill herself. Now Anna is sharing everything she learned with the next generation of wool people through her Field School. And very soon, she'll be bringing domestically sourced and manufactured wool pellets to Manitoba. ‌‌‌‌As you'll hear, Anna's goal is far larger than just her own sheep and skeins and pellets. She wants to revolutionize and revitalize the Canadian wool industry as we know it.In the interview, we talked about Anna's life trajectory from urban yarn store owner to rural farmer, the challenges and costs (both financial and human) of starting a wool processing mill, the current limitations of the Canadian wool industry, the possibilities for the future, and her ultimate vision for a thriving regenerative textile infrastructure in Canada.‌LinksRead, explore, and shop at Long Way HomesteadSupport Anna's Canadian wool research and advocacy work on PatreonVisit Anna's other project, Canadianwool.orgSupport the show (https://www.thewoolchannel.com/membership)

The Fairgrounds sets the policy for the events held there and they are following protocol from NYS, the Dutchess County Health Department and CDC. Their COVID information can be found by clicking here. We are navigating this challenging time the best we can - limiting attendance numbers, encouraging masking, making all barns and buildings one-way, monitoring crowds in the buildings, keeping all doors open, spacing vendors 10 feet apart (with many vendors moved outdoors). We've put workshops online and eliminated children's activities and the Skein and Garment Competition. We have also given more space to the Fleece Sale and Merritt Books' authors program.   Our vendors have been given the option to vend at the Fairgrounds, to vend virtually, or to elect to wait until 2022 to vend.   To put it mildly, this is a difficult time and nothing is definitive - but please know that this issue is top of mind for us as organizers of the event.” FOs Another design sample is in progress, a tank top made with HiKoo Popcycle!  Purse Socks! This week on BSDNow. Allan and I are back from MeetBSD! A good time was had by all, lots to discuss, so let's jump right into it on your place to B...SD! This episode was brought to you by Headlines Build a FreeBSD 11.0-release Openstack Image with bsd-cloudinit (https://raymii.org/s/tutorials/FreeBSD_11.0-release_Openstack_Image.html) We are going to prepare a FreeBSD image for Openstack deployment. We do this by creating a FreeBSD 11.0-RELEASE instance, installing it and converting it using bsd-cloudinit. We'll use the CloudVPS public Openstack cloud for this. Create an account there and install the Openstack command line tools, like nova, cinder and glance. A FreeBSD image with Cloud Init will automatically resize the disk to the size of the flavor and it will add your SSH key right at boot. You can use Cloud Config to execute a script at first boot, for example, to bootstrap your system into Puppet or Ansible. If you use Ansible to manage OpenStack instances you can integrate it without manually logging in or doing anything manually. Since FreeBSD 10.2-RELEASE there is an rc script which, when the file /firstboot exists, expands the root filesystem to the full disk. While bsd-cloudinit does this as well, if you don't need the whole cloudinit stack, (when you use a static ssh key for example), you can touch that file to make sure the disk is expanded at the first boot A detailed tutorial that shows how to create customized cloud images using the FreeBSD install media There is also the option of using the FreeBSD release tools to build custom cloud images in a more headless fashion Someone should make a tutorial out of that *** iXsystems Announces TrueOS Launch (https://www.ixsystems.com/blog/ixsystems-announces-trueos-launch/) As loyal listeners to this show, you've no doubt heard by now that we are in the middle of undergoing a shift in moving PC-BSD -> TrueOS. Last week during MeetBSD this was made “official” with iX issuing our press release and I was able to give a talk detailing many of the reasons and things going on with this change. The talk should be available online here soon(ish), but for a quick recap: TrueOS is moving to a rolling-release model based on FreeBSD -CURRENT Lumina has become the default desktop for TrueOS LibreSSL is enabled top to bottom We are in the middle of working on conversion to OpenRC for run-control replacement The TrueOS pico was announced, which is our “Thin-Client” solution, right now allowing you to use a TrueOS server pared with a RPI2 device. *** Running FreeBSD 11 on Raspberry Pi (https://vzaigrin.wordpress.com/2016/10/16/running-freebsd-11-on-raspberry-pi/) This article covers some of the changes you will notice if you upgrade your RPI to FreeBSD 11.0 It covers some of the changes to WiFi in 11.0 Pro Tip: you can get a list of WiFi devices by doing: sysctl net.wlan.devices There are official binary packages for ARM with 11.0, so you can just ‘pkg install' your favourite apps Many of the LEDs are exposed via the /dev/led/ interface, which you can just echo 0 or 1 to, or use morse(6) to send a message gpioctl can be used to control the various GPIO pins The post also covers how to setup the real-time clock on the Raspberry Pi There is also limited support for adjusting the CPU frequency of the Pi There are also tips on configuring a one-wire temperature sensor *** void-zones-tools for FreeBSD (https://github.com/cyclaero/void-zones-tools) Adblock has been in the news a bit recently, with some of the more popular browser plugins now accepting brib^...contributions to permit specific ads through. Well today the ad-blockers strike back. We have a great tutorial up on GitHub which demonstrates one of the useful features of using Unbound in FreeBSD to do your own ad-blocking with void-zones. Specifically, void-zones are a way to return NXDOMAIN when DNS requests are made to known malicious or spam sites. Using void-zones-tools software will make managing this easy, by being able to pull in known lists of sites to block from several 3rd party curators. When coupled with our past tutorials on setting up your own FreeBSD router, this may become very useful for a lot of folks who want to do ad-blocking ad at a lower level, allowing it to filter smart-phones or any other devices on a network. *** News Roundup BSD Socket API Revamp (https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sustrik/dsock/master/rfc/sock-api-revamp-01.txt) Martin Sustrik has started a draft RFC to revamp the BSD Sockets API: The progress in the area of network protocols is distinctively lagging behind. While every hobbyist new to the art of programming writes and publishes their small JavaScript libraries, there's no such thing going on with network protocols. Indeed, it looks like the field of network protocols is dominated by big companies and academia, just like programming as a whole used to be before the advent of personal computers. the API proposed in this document doesn't try to virtualize all possible aspects of all possible protocols and provide a single set of functions to deal with all of them. Instead, it acknowledges how varied the protocol landscape is and how much the requirements for individual protocols differ. Therefore, it lets each protocol define its own API and asks only for bare minimum of standardised behaviour needed to implement protocol composability. As a consequence, the new API is much more lightweight and flexible than BSD socket API and allows to decompose today's monolithic protocol monsters into small single-purpose microprotocols that can be easily combined together to achieve desired functionality. The idea behind the new design is to allow the software author to define their own protocols via a generic interface, and easily stack them on top of the existing network protocols, be they the basic protocols like TCP/IP, or a layer 7 protocol like HTTP Example of creating a stack of four protocols: ~~ int s1 = tcpconnect("192.168.0.111:5555"); int s2 = foostart(s1, arg1, arg2, arg3); int s3 = barstart(s2); int s4 = bazstart(s3, arg4, arg5); ~~ It also allows applying generic transformations to the protocols: ~~ int tcps = tcpconnect("192.168.0.111:80"); /* Websockets is a connected protocol. */ int ws = websockconnect(tcps); uint16t compressionalgoritm; mrecv(ws, &compressionalgorithm, 2, -1); /* Compression socket is unconnected. */ int cs = compressstart(ws, compression_algorithm); ~~ *** Updated version of re(4) for DragonflyBSD (http://lists.dragonflybsd.org/pipermail/users/2016-November/313140.html) Sephe over at the Dragonfly project has issued a CFT for a newer version of the “re” driver For those who don't know, that is for Realtek nics, specifically his updates add features: I have made an updated version of re(4), which leverages Realtek driver's chip/PHY reset/initialization code. I hope it can resolve all kinds of weirdness we encountered on this chip so far. Testers, you know what to do! Give this a whirl and let him know if you run into any new issues, or better yet, give feedback if it fixes some long-standing problems you've run into in the past. *** Hackathon reports from OpenBSD's B2K16 b2k16 hackathon report: Jeremy Evans on ports cleaning, progress on postgres, nginx, ruby and more (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20161112112023) b2k16 hackathon report: Landry Breuil on various ports progress (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20161112095902) b2k16 hackathon report: Antoine Jacoutot on GNOME's path forward, various ports progress (http://undeadly.org/cgi?action=article&sid=20161109030623) We have a trio of hackathon reports from OpenBSD's B2K16 (Recently held in Budapest) First up - Jeremy Evans give us his rundown which starts with sweeping some of the cruft out of the barn: I started off b2k16 by channeling tedu@, and removing a lot of ports, including lang/ruby/2.0, lang/io, convertors/ruby-json, databases/dbic++, databases/ruby-swift, databases/ruby-jdbc-*, x11/ruby-profiligacy, and mail/ruby-mailfactory. After that, he talks about improvements made to postgres, nginx and ruby ports, fixing things such as pg_upgrade support, breaking nginx down into sub-packages and a major ruby update to about 50% of the packages. Next up - Landry Breuil tells us about his trip, which also started with some major ports pruning, including some stale XFCE bits and drupal6. One of the things he mentions is the Tor browser: Found finally some time again to review properly the pending port for Tor Browser, even if i don't like the way it is developed (600+ patches against upstream firefox-esr !? even if relationship is improving..) nor will endorse its use, i feel that the time that was spent on porting it and updating it and maintaining it shouldn't be lost, and it should get commited - there are only some portswise minor tweaks to fix. Had a bit of discussions about that with other porters... Lastly, Antoine Jacoutot gives us a smaller update on his work: First task of this hackathon was for Jasper and I to upgrade to GNOME 3.22.1 (version 3.22.2 hit the ports tree since). As usual I already updated the core libraries a few days before so that we could start with a nice set of fully updated packages. It ended up being the fastest GNOME update ever, it all went very smoothly. We're still debating the future of GNOME on OpenBSD though. More and more features require systemd interfaces and without a replacement it may not make sense to keep it around. Implementing these interfaces requires time which Jasper and I don't really have these days... Anyway, we'll see. All-n-all, a good trip it sounds like with some much needed hacking taking place. Good to see the cruft getting cleaned up, along with some new exciting ports landing. *** July to September 2016 Status Report (https://www.freebsd.org/news/status/report-2016-07-2016-09.html) The latest FreeBSD quarterly status report is out It includes the induction of the new Core team, and reports from all of the other teams, including Release Engineering, Port Manager, and the FreeBSD Foundation Some other highlights: Capsicum Update The Graphics Stack on FreeBSD Using lld, the LLVM Linker, to Link FreeBSD VirtualBox Shared Folders Filesystem evdev support (better mouse, keyboard, and multi-touch support) ZFS Code Sync with Latest OpenZFS/Illumos The ARC now mostly stores compressed data, the same as is stored on disk, decompressing them on demand. The L2ARC now stores the same (compressed) data as the ARC without recompression, and its RAM usage was further reduced. The largest size of indirect block possible has been increased from 16KB to 128KB, and speculative prefetching of indirect blocks is now performed. Improved ordering of space allocation. The SHA-512t256 and Skein hashing algorithms are now supported. *** Beastie Bits How to Host Your Own Private GitHub with Gogs (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/user/predragp/www/git.html) Nvidia Adds Telemetry To Latest Drivers (https://yro.slashdot.org/story/16/11/07/1427257/nvidia-adds-telemetry-to-latest-drivers) KnoxBUG Upcoming Meeting (http://knoxbug.org/2016-11-29) Feedback/Questions William - Show Music (http://pastebin.com/skvEgkLK) Ray - Mounting a Cell Phone (http://pastebin.com/nMDeSFGM) Ron - TrueOS + Radeon (http://pastebin.com/p5bC1jKU) (Follow-up - He used nvidia card) Kurt - ZFS Migration (http://pastebin.com/ud9vEK2C) Matt Dillon (Yes that Matt Dillon) - vkernels (http://pastebin.com/VPQfsUks) ***
