In this episode of the ROCC Pod, we sit down with Christina DeGregory, an independent insurance broker with Health Markets, to talk through her journey from a biology major (!) to health insurance and how she's using her science background to educate and empower clients. Christina shares that she holds a master's in biological sciences and once worked as a teaching assistant in cell biology and microbiology. That experience, she explains, helped shape her ability to explain complex topics—like health insurance—in clear, simple terms. She's now channeling that same teaching energy into her role as a broker, with a personal motto: “Insurance is hard, let me make it easier for you.”We talk through how she transitioned out of academia and into insurance after facing a stagnant job market post-grad school. What drew her to this career was the opportunity to connect with people, educate them, and help them understand their options. As an independent broker, Christina runs her own business under the Health Markets umbrella, helping individuals find coverage through the Affordable Care Act. She explains open enrollment, special enrollment periods, and how certain life events can trigger eligibility to enroll outside the standard window. We also touch on the most common challenges her clients face, such as confusion around deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums. Christina emphasizes her goal of making sure clients truly understand their coverage, payments, and what to expect in case of hospitalization or routine care. She works primarily with people who aren't eligible for employer-sponsored insurance—1099 workers, part-time employees, or those in between jobs—and particularly helps those in lower-income brackets who may qualify for subsidized or even $0 monthly premium plans.Christina also works with supplemental insurance like dental, vision, and indemnity plans that offer payouts for accidents, illnesses, or hospital stays. She outlines how these offerings can protect against crushing medical debt, especially for vulnerable populations. Soon, she'll also be licensed in Medicare to help retirees navigate yet another complicated health care system.Outside of work, Christina's passionate about music and community. A long-time fan of Detroit's EDM scene, she talks about attending Movement and Electric Forest every year. We also learn about her positive experience joining the Royal Oak Chamber and her love for being involved in local networking events.Throughout the episode, it's clear Christina brings not only technical knowledge to her work but also empathy, patience, and a genuine passion for helping people navigate the confusing world of health insurance.Call Christina: 248-981-3610Visit her website: https://www.healthmarkets.com/local-health-insurance-agent/cdegregory/Or find her on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/christina_degregory/ Learn more about the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce: https://www.royaloakchamber.com/Connect with our hosts:Jon Gay from JAG in Detroit Podcasts - http://www.jagindetroit.com/Lisa Bibbee from Century 21 Northland - http://soldbylisab.com/

The National Alliance is constantly evolving and adapting to the changing world around us. Learn more about recent efforts to change Insurance Education for a new generation. Monica Adwani, CPIA I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and moved to Massachusetts in 2007. I graduated with multiple degrees in Information Management, Medical Coding, and Business Management from the InterAmerican University of P.R. and then Fisher College, Boston. My education and curious mind were the catalysts that opened the doors to the Insurance Industry. By supporting a group of researchers, consultants, trainers, and experts in the areas of Commercial Transportation, Ergonomics, Innovation, and Human Factors; I fell in love with insurance and knew very early this was going to be my forever career. The opportunity to work with this group of Doctors, Researchers and Field Experts allowed me to learn, build confidence, polish my language skills, creating the environment and experience for me to find something I could be and feel passionate about. So, unlike most people, I didn't start in Sales, Service, or Management. I was just a medical nerd with a passion for Organizational Phycology. Now, fifteen years later I have experienced many realms of the Industry from Fortune 500 to Independently Own Agencies. I am passionate about Sales, Service, Claims, and especially Operational Excellence. I have a keen eye for behaviors, process, accountability, and efficiency. I hope that my skills and expertise can help many entrepreneurs out there reach new heights by learning new and more efficient ways of leading, learning, and operating their businesses. Episode #11 of Liv Louder is here! A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to be a guest on the Awkward Insurance Podcast hosted by the lovely and talented Dustyne Bryant and Cat Ferris. I agreed to the interview on one condition: they had to return the favor. And true to their word, they sat down with me to be "grilled" on my show. Over the course of a couple of conversations, I feel like the three of us have become friends who happen to also be hosting podcasts. I loved getting an opportunity to dig into life. This interview goes a lot of different directions as we cover everything from Thanksgiving vs Christmas, how our individual differences create strengths in teams, and what happens when we know and own our value. You will definitely hear the word "willingness" A LOT (apologies in advance for how much we use it), but believe me when I say we just couldn't escape the critical impact of it! I have truly enjoyed every moment that I've gotten to spend with Dustyne and Cat, getting to know them as insurance professionals, moms, and all the things that make up the wonderful women they are. I know, without a doubt, they will inspire you to Liv Louder! XO! The program launched in Texas and was approved for Essential Knowledge and Skills for Career Preparation, Insurance Operations, Money Matters, Statistics and Risk Management, and Business Law.What do students get?The CISR High School program gives students a professional insurance designation and introduces them into the industry's shrinking workforce. They also get opportunities to attend industry events and can apply for scholarships to attend insurance-based university programs.
