Jackie Wang is a poet, scholar, multimedia artist, and Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity at the University of Southern California. She is the author of the poetry collection The Sunflower Cast a Spell to Save Us from the Void (2021), which was a finalist for the National Book Award; the critical essay collection Carceral Capitalism (Semiotext(e), 2018); and the chapbooks The Twitter Hive Mind Is Dreaming (2018) and Tiny Spelunker of the Oneiro-Womb (2016). Her research is on racial capitalism, surveillance technology, and the political economy of prisons and police. Alien Daughters Walk into the Sun: An Almanac of Extreme Girlhood (Semiotext(e), 2023) features the early writings of Jackie Wang, drawn from her early zines, indie-lit crit, and prolific early 2000s blog. Compiled as a field guide, travelogue, essay collection, and weather report, Alien Daughters Walk into the Sun traces Jackie Wang's trajectory from hard femme to Harvard, from dumpster dives and highway bike rides to dropping out of an MFA program, becoming a National Book Award finalist, and writing her trenchant book Carceral Capitalism. Alien Daughters charts the dream-seeking misadventures of an “odd girl” from Florida who emerged from punk houses and early Tumblr to become the powerful writer she is today. Anarchic and beautifully personal, Alien Daughters is a strange intellectual autobiography that demonstrates Wang's singular self-education: an early life lived where every day and every written word began like the Tarot's Fool, with a leap of faith. This week on Black Hoodie Alchemy, our outlaw wizard friend Keats Ross returns from his last appearance on the show to talk about his latest work: Divergent Magick - An Anarchic Grimoire, which is far less destructive than it sounds. Or, perhaps a better way to put it is: it is destruction with strong alchemical purpose. But beyond that, the true nature of the anarchy and divergence here lies in the difference between orthodoxy and heterodoxy; the tried-and-true versus the path less traveled. With study, practice, and structure, so much of Keats' work is centered around flipping his study on its head and finding new meaning in the abstract, the mundane, and the intuitive rather than specific rules from books. However, with discussion of anarchy and metaphysics we as well get into the more socio-cultural implications, dealing with wealth and poverty, struggle and resilience, and how the hunger that poverty can give us is truly something even the most pampered people are envious of. We hope you dig it! my linktree with my books, website and more Keats' PRAGMAGICK WE THE HALLOWED This week's featured music -- brought to you by this week's special guest Keats AKA Dakota Slim! linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, Trevor embarks on a solo review of Jung Byung-gil's, Carter (2022)! Currently a Netflix exclusive, Carter is a bombastic and over the top Korean action film that is shot and edited to feel like a single-continuous shot. Packed from end to end with less than stellar green screen work, and disruptive, digitally assisted match cuts, the films core gimmick often times feels like its greatest liability. Anarchic, both in terms of its utter disregard for traditional cinematic visual language, and in terms of its internal logic in regards to the physics of its action design, Carter is a bold experiment in action cinema that's novelty greatly outweighs its entertainment value. Occasionally displaying flickers of brilliance in its action choreography and camera placement, the ragged, unpolished nature of Carter's editing and general visual clarity unfortunately result in a frustrating experience that finds the viewer constantly wanting to discard the one-shot concept in favor of a more traditional cinematic. Overlong, relentlessly stupid, and yet somehow po-faced affair, Carter unfortunately only manages to succeed in delivering thrilling momentsamid all the noise and chaos across its multitude of action set pieces. An action film that will find itself, in this reviewer's opinion; without a single blu-ray chapter devoid of some form of frustration or disappointment, Carter is a praise-worthy effort that's overall quality fails to match the enthusiasm and boldness of its production crew. The further she ventured into crypto for her recent article, the more Sarah Resnick realised that not all cryptocurrency investors fit the cliches. But that didn't detract from the common, almost anarchic feeling amongst a lot of traders.

We recorded this show before the chaos began in Washington, surrounding the Electoral College certification; it just wasn’t that hard to see what was coming. Our thrust: the richness of the intellectual tradition of conservative thought is being squandered. What passes, in unexamined conversation and in lazy journalism, as “conservatism,” is not. “Repubican” does not mean “conservative.” Conservatism, with its sober view of human nature, would understand that leaders who lead people astray with falsehood, sow seeds of unrestrained violent passion. Order is not given; it is cultivated, and needs tending. Our show pushes back against the unexamined, often unconscious ways that we frame public questions using political or economic modes of thinking. We aim to be part of a growing movement of people who are critical of the narrowness of political and economic categories, and who want to revive a vision of human flourishing that is grounded in the wisdoms of theological and moral philosophical tradition. We see these habits and ways of thinking as being pre-political, and foundational to a healthy and civil shared life in families, communities, economies, and polities. In short, we want to foster conversations, develop habits, and create communities that are grounded in curiosity, going deep, and shining light. Russell Brand is a hip bohemian Englishman on the path to enlightenment. And he likes the ineffable. Like, a lot. The decoders kinda like him too, despite the fact they really struggle to eff him at all. Really, Matt has no effing idea what he is babbling about most of the time, but Chris, being 'English-adjacent', seems to make a better job of it. Imagine smoking pot and talking big ideas with your precocious college room-mate at 2am in the morning. Now give him some methamphetamine, and you've got some idea of the fast-talking stream of consciousness that is Russell Brand. A pair of milquetoast moderates like Chris and Matt just aren't the right audience to properly appreciate the mystical anarchism that Brand advocates. It's probably got something to do with the limits of the bandwidth of their instruments of perception given that knowledge and wisdom are infinite and being-ness itself is.... Well, you get the idea. n today's episode of the solecast we have an in-depth discussion of anarchic black radicalism with comrades from Ram Philly & Afrofuturist Abolitionists of the Americas. Anarchic Black Radicalism draws on the history of Black Panthers, early abolitionists, Black Nationalism/Liberation Movements and more to synthesize a distinct form of black anarchism. We talk about how recent social movements have radicalized a new generation of black youth and how anarchist ideas have gained traction in their wake. We talk about the importance of centering trans and disabled people and what steps people of color can take to build their own spaces for organizing that aren't centered around white activists. We go over about some of the theoretical bases that form their analysis and some of the writers and texts that have informed this direction. Link: https://slatestarcodex.com/2019/09/10/ssc-journal-club-relaxed-beliefs-under-psychedelics-and-the-anarchic-brain/ Thanks to Sarah H. and the people at her house for help understanding this paper] The predictive coding theory argues that the brain uses Bayesian calculations to make sense of the noisy and complex world around it. It relies heavily on priors (assumptions about what the world must be like given what it already knows) to construct models of the world, sampling only enough sense-data to double-check its models and update them when they fail. This has been a fruitful way to look at topics from depression to autism to sensory deprivation. Now, in Relaxed Beliefs Under Psychedelics And The Anarchic Brain: Toward A Unified Model Of The Brain Action Of Psychedelics, Karl Friston and Robin Carhart-Harris try to use predictive coding to explain the effects of psychedelic drugs. Then they use their theory to argue that psychedelic therapy may be helpful for “most, if not all” mental illnesses. Priors are unconscious assumptions about reality that the brain uses to construct models. They can range all the way from basic truths like “solid objects don’t randomly disappear”, to useful rules-of-thumb like “most get-rich-quick schemes are scams”, to emotional hangups like “I am a failure”, to unfair stereotypes like “Italians are lazy”. Without any priors, the world would fail to make sense at all, turning into an endless succession of special cases without any common lessons. But if priors become too strong, a person can become closed-minded and stubborn, refusing to admit evidence that contradicts their views. F&CH argue that psychedelics “relax” priors, giving them less power to shape experience. Part of their argument is neuropharmacologic: most psychedelics are known to work through the 5-HT2A receptor. These receptors are most common in the cortex, the default mode network, and other areas at the “top” of a brain hierarchy going from low-level sensations to high-level cognitions. The 5-HT2A receptors seem to strengthen or activate these high-level areas in some way. So:

No-holds-barred improv. Two teams of comedians facing off against each other in a series of ridiculous and increasingly difficult challenges like New Choice, 185 and Job Interview. All suggestions come from the audience, up the anarchy level when Laura from the audience starts keeping score.
Hailing from Germany, Modeselektor work in a variety of tempos and styles with an emphasis on big, warpy synth sounds and heavy basslines that can threaten foundations. With plenty of artist albums and Moderat, their joint project with Apparat, it's as an audio/visual live act that they’ve truly conquered hearts and minds. Here, they bring the same anarchic disdain and chaos they’re known for in their live sets while discussing the fall of the Berlin Wall, German record store Hard Wax, Moderat and more.

Hello and welcome back to The Drunken Comedian Podcast. In this episode we have Joby Mageean. Anarchic, playful and hilarious. We talk about comedy styles, McDonalds and whether Cat Poo is vegan. Follow us on @DrunkComPod and please review this podcast on ITunes!
We have no idea what the topic is this week because we were too busy talking to classmate Kit Richardson about Columbia, football and Power Rangers to get around to it. Ben is ill, T breaks his bike lock, and Kit gets way too nerdy about Lord Of The Rings.. Anarchic!
Director Paul Goodwin & Producer Sean Hogan delve into the creation of their passion fuelled documentary history of the Galaxy's Greatest Comic, 2000AD.
We continue through Luke's DVD collection with two films that helped redefine comedy movies. Anarchic and subversive, the John Landis classic Animal House packs a huge sucker punch to the institutions of pre-Vietnam America. Fletcher spills his guts about why the film means so much to him. Anchorman started as a film about a bank heist, but through the cutting room floor and magic of re-shoots, it helped to set the tone for the string of improvised comedies throughout the 2000s (and present - for better or worse). Please do take a moment to review us on iTunes here.
