Good morning from Chinatown NYC, where there are no avocados in my 42-square foot (including counters and all appliances, listen, it's like walking a gang plank) kitchen, just a COVID test in-progress and some excellent coffee from Panther Coffee, based out of Miami. The owners, Joel and Leticia Pollock, are friends from the iteration of my life after Los Angeles, we met them in Portland, from whence they decamped for Miami, to open a coffee roasting business.“Nency, Nency, can you write something for us?” This is Leticia - and here I am badly botching her Brazilian accent - asking back in 2009 that I write to the local licensing bureau explaining what coffee roasting was, the idea being totally foreign and apparently causing officials to think someone was trying to burn down the city. I did; Panther opened in 2010 and now has something like four million locations in Miami (okay, six). You should go. We are going back further today! To 1990, when my daughter was less than a year old and I saw two young women my age pushing baby strollers past my house on the street that led up to the Hollywood Reservoir. Stay to the end for a sweet addendum. Two corrections: Charlie's first band was the Plugz. (The Cruzados were second.) And toward the end I accidentally say “mash the garlic” when of course I mean, mash the avocado. Also: COVID, negative.Episode notes: Charlie Quintana, whose first and only job besides as a drummer was delivering flowers for one day in his native El Paso. He was sixteen when the band he formed and The Plugz (video) became successful. Charlie went on to become part of the Cruzados, The Havalinas and other bands, and toured and/or recorded with Bon Dylan, Social Distortion, John Doe, Cracker, Joan Osborne and, if I am not mistaken, the Gin Blossoms. I remember (though I am finding no confirmation of) this because sometimes when Charlie played in Los Angeles he would nab me some tickets, and when the Wallflowers played at the Greek Theater, lead singer Jakob Dylan announced (I am not kidding here), “This goes out to Nancy,” before launching into, “One Headlight.” (I had told Charlie I loved the song.) Maybe I'm wrong! But that's my story and I'm sticking to it.Well lookie here, I found some audio of “Meet the Neighbors.” (Or you can read it.)“Charlie Quintana, drummer for the Plugz and Social Distortion, dies at 56,” by Randy Lewis (Los Angeles Times)“Taking My Ex Back In (for His Own Good),” by Nancy Rommelmann (New York Times Modern Love)Guacamole, adapted from Charlie Quintana* 5 ripe avocados* Salt* One-half yellow onion, chopped small* 2 - 3 jalapenos, chopped small, leave some seeds* Handful of cilantro, chopped* Juice of 2 - 3 limesMash the avocado and salt. Marc James is a Spin Doctors superfan, and nothing was going to hold him back from being on this episode of Dueling Decades, not even when his Internet lines get cut! That's right, the gods were against us for this recording. Two hours before our recording with Chris Barron, Marc's Internet lines got cut in a crazy construction snafu, then Mancrush's network card took a dump 30 minutes before call time! That said, we adapted, and we overcame! No pandemic, cut Internet, or faulty computers were going to stop us from recording this episode. But, just in case Joe Findlay from the Miscast Commentary Podcast is here on backup!  With the contest underway, Marc stacked the deck to impress Chris Barron with his 21st birthday of 1999! Drew Zakmin from the One Headlight 90's podcast is back with the funnest 11th birthday he could muster from 1991! And to round everything out, Mancrush is looking to find another lucky shirt with his own 11th birthday from 1999! It's been a whole lot easier since tonight's gremlins are gone, it's a whole lot happier without their faces around! Chris Barron is still rocking on his live "Thirsty Thursday" shows on StageIt, make sure to drop on in. Don't worry, the Spin Doctors are still together as well, and he gives us some deep musical introspective on the past and present! It doesn't end there though, find out how the Spin Doctors came to be, Mancrush's second favorite Kickboxer of 1989, wearing operating room attire to dinner, the best way to conceal your peppermint schnapps, three teens that could have saved Al Capone from syphilis, two nearly identical stories about an ageless legend, a beastly beverage we've all purchased, our wives keep our childhood memories in the basement, watch Wapner wherever you want, knockoff birthday gifts, showing up at a movie and your song is unknowingly in it, dark 90's music, the birth of a musical legend, a reptile that looks like John Goodman, a musician you put on when you turn the lights down, things you do in the passenger's seat of your best friends vehicle, things people say about Chris' bandmates, playing games in a Craftmatic adjustable bed, snitches get stitches, Marc uses AOL instant messenger to meet a stranger in New York City, and what is it like to know your album is basically available anywhere you go? The Mayhem Is the Message. Chaos Theory. Intimidation Tactics. Describing the increasing sickness of the Left in America. From extended lockdowns to The CHAZ to the riots and even to a New York Times headline stating: "Yes, We Mean Literally Abolish the Police." Why are Democrats marginalizing themselves with such intensely unpopular positions? We offer our speculations, as we revisit the MSM PSYOP and review the cardinal importance of the Second Amendment. Meanwhile, the Golden MAGA Economy appears poised for a slingshot rebound, producing a record-shattering 2.5 million additional jobs last month. Larry Kudlow describes "positive green shoot indicators" and Kayleigh McEnany outlines the "transition to greatness" looming ahead. Good news as bad news for CNN? We ponder the strange new Media Two-Step, endorsing crowds of protestors but opposing forthcoming Trump Rallies. Has the Democrat "Mail Ballot" Cheat Strategy been undone by all the protests? Biden in the Basement. Obama to the Rescue. Plus, former DNI Ric Grenell praises AG Barr as "a great American" and says "we're really lucky to have him." Good omen for SpyGate Accountability. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

“The Natural” belongs in any debate over the best sports movie ever. It has Robert Redford in his prime, a stunning Kim Basinger, huffy Wilford Brimley, sly Robert Duvall, powerful Glenn Close, and even a young Michael Madsen. They’re all delivering top-notch performances on a picture-perfect backdrop that feels really real for an ‘80s movie. Shat The Movies listener Vince commissioned this baseball classic just as hosts Dick Ebert and Drew Zakmin are gearing up for Opening Day. It’s full of iconic scenes that bring us all back to our playing days, when we imagined each of us could swing his own Wonderboy bat and be the greatest that ever played the game. Everything ages, and “The Natural” aged surprisingly well, but not everything was a home run. Redford is 46 and playing a 19-year-old. His character, Roy Hobbs, seems to leave a trail of death wherever he goes. And the final inning is cornier than a Nebraska farm. In this episode, you’ll also hear our list of the worst sports-movie actors of all time, find out how a young Big D would get pumped up for high school games, and learn why your mom got a care package from Derek Jeter. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

The most expensive film of its day, "Total Recall" took Arnold Schwarzenegger's career to new heights by adding star power like Sharon Stone, technological wonders like full body scanners, and philosophical questions about the nature of reality. This 1990 sci-fi rollercoaster didn't sacrifice any of the Schwarzenegger charm. We still get the punchlines, the over-the-top action, the gratuitous use of meat shields, and the "Conan The Barbarian" theme song. No, seriously, check it out. That shit is stolen. The Shat Crew has the expected debate over whether Quaid's adventures are all implanted memories or a rude awakening. Big D reveals he'd trade a virtual vacation for a virtual babysitter. Kerri Gross just wants virtual sleep. And guest host Drew Zakmin admits to forgetting the names of his friends' children.  Do the three hosts recall Kuato and the three-boobed woman? Totally. Shat the Movies: 80's & 90's Best Film Review

"Toy Story" won the Best of Disney category, and it's easy to see why this Pixar powerhouse spawned an entire franchise. The characters are unforgettable, the attention to detail is unrivaled, and the voice talent is unbeatable.  This episode is all about Dick Ebert. One second he's perving out over The Little Mermaid, the next he's impersonating Randy Newman. Big D even brought a special guest along for this '90s movie review: Drew Zakmin, of the One Headlight podcast.  Gene Lyons joins them to discuss their favorite childhood toys, the dark side of Woody the Cowboy, Ram Man, Fisto, and parallels between "Toy Story" and its less-popular contemporary "The Christmas Story." Body Count's in the house! As promised, Eric, Evan and Dan review the latest release from Ice-T's metal outfit, Body Count. Bloodlust is the band's heaviest offering to date, though at times Ice-T goes a little too off the rails (just like this podcast), and the hip-hop legend inspires a grammatical debate on the correctness of the term "bustin' a nut" and Dan then attempts to start an Internet rumor involving The Wallflowers' '90s hit single, "One Headlight." For the beard portion of the podcast, Dan and Eric review three scents from Black Tie Beard Oil -- Royale Black, Autumn Night and Polar Ice -- and use an odd jean-based rating system to do so. Evan and Eric then give their review of Hog Heaven Imperial Red IPA from Avery Brewing Co. and Dan drinks an IPA.
