Con dos cruceros simultáneos, Puerto Valparaíso despide el mes de febrero que hasta la fecha ha acumulado cerca de 33 mil visitantes -entre pasajeros y tripulantes- y 20 recaladas, desde 16 de octubre de 2022 cuando comenzó la temporada de cruceros en la ciudad puerto. Se trata de las naves Oosterdam y Viking Jupiter, que se encuentran en el Terminal Pacífico Sur (TPS) y el Terminal Portuario Valparaíso (TPV), respectivamente. En el caso de la primera, de la línea Holland America, visita por primera vez las costas porteñas, siendo la segunda embarcación de esta línea en visitar Valparaíso durante el ciclo 2022 - 2023. La nave de 285 metros de eslora significó un tránsito de 4.336 visitantes, entre pasajeros y tripulantes, siendo una de las naves más grande de esta temporada. Franco Gandolfo, gerente general de Puerto Valparaíso hizo énfasis en que “Para nosotros es muy relevante la industria de cruceros y es por eso que estamos contentos de que esta nave de pasajeros haya recalado por primera vez en Valparaíso y darle la bienvenida personalmente al capitán del Oosterdam y a su tripulación. Lo hemos dicho anteriormente, esta temporada nos tiene muy satisfechos, ya que representa un gran aumento respecto a la anterior y se acerca mucho a los números prepandemia. Actualmente, hemos recibido 33 mil visitantes y tenemos proyectados cerca de 40 mil, lo que nos pone muy optimistas ya que significa también un gran impulso para la vocación turística de la ciudad”. Por su parte, Oliver Weinreich, gerente general de Terminal Pacífico Sur Valparaíso, señaló que “Estamos muy contentos de recibir al crucero Oosterdam de Holland America, que por primera vez visita TPS en Valparaíso, proveniente del sur de Chile. En el pasado ya habíamos tenido el gusto de recibir a otras naves de Holland America; pero como siempre, nos esforzamos en brindar el mejor servicio a la nave y a los pasajeros para que tengan una buena experiencia en este puerto durante su recalada; y a la compañía de cruceros le agradecemos haber incluido en esta travesía a Terminal como a Valparaíso, una ciudad patrimonial a la que estamos orgullosos de pertenecer. Esperamos que regresen muchas veces más”. Finalmente, Víctor Oelckers, gerente general de Inchcape Shipping Services, manifestó que “Valparaíso es una ciudad ícono de Latinoamérica, es conocida mundialmente como una ciudad preciosa y patrimonio de la Unesco, es un destino que los turistas buscan al momento de tomar la decisión de sus cruceros y el hecho de partir su viaje en Valparaíso es un factor importante en esta toma de decisión, porque tiene una logística impecable hacia el aeropuerto, un terminal de pasajeros que está funcionando a muy buen nivel y la ciudad ofrece servicios de excelencia y que los turistas buscan porque están muy bien publicitados a nivel de buscadores. Valparaíso tiene una fama muy bien ganada con hoteles boutique, gourmet, con una respuesta gastronómica y de hospedaje de primer nivel y que ningún otro puerto en Chile tiene". Por su parte, el crucero Viking Jupiter arribó el jueves y estará hasta mañana en el sitio 8 de TPV, siendo este su último arribo de la temporada en el puerto de Valparaíso. La nave de 228 metros de eslora trajo a la ciudad -en esta oportunidad- 2.317 visitantes y considerando sus tres recaladas ha traído más de 6 mil visitantes a Valparaíso durante estos meses. Temporada 2022-2023 Con más del 60% de avance, la Temporada de Cruceros 2022-2023 ha recibido 20 recaladas, de un total de 30 proyectadas para este ciclo, lo que significa 22 arribos más que la temporada anterior, dando cuenta de una importante reactivación de la industria de cruceros luego de dos años afectados por la 'pandemia' del Covid.

Star Pride is the third and final of Windstar's Star Plus Class yachts to emerge from Italy's Fincantieri shipyard following a complex lengthening and transformation project. Now, all six of the line's all-suite and sailing yachts are back in the water cruising while requiring vaccines of all passengers and crew amongst a host of health and safety precautions including testing and high-tech air filtration.The line's three all-suite Star Plus Class yachts (Star Breeze, Star Legend, and Star Pride) underwent major transformations, with an investment of more than $250 million. The Angkor is so popular it books out months in advance so there is a real need for a second ship on this routing.With just ten enlarged staterooms, going a bit bigger than the classic much-loved Pandaw cabin, this expedition vessel will like all Pandaw ships have an ultra-shallow draft to enable it to cope with such tricky waterways.Pandaw first opened on the Red River in 2015 and it has been one of the company's most successful small ship routings offering a real insight into the life and culture of North Vietnam with its amazing scenery and time spent in and around the capital Hanoi.The new ship will be built in the region at Hai-phong, and fitted out in hardwood from sustainable forestry. It will have the usual Pandaw promenades running around the ship that are conducive to so convivial and atmosphere on board and a choice of indoor or outdoor dining, in the spacious saloon or aft deck.Proof of vaccination or recovery is no longer required on A-ROSA cruisesFrom 4 June 2022 participating in cruises of A-ROSA Flussschiff GmbH will again be possible without proof of vaccination, recovery or a certified negative test result. The cruise line has adapted its hygiene protocol to the relaxed European entry regulations. After the removal of the mask mandate on board as well as the rapid antigen test upon boarding, this is the next major relaxation step.An exception is the A-ROSA ALVA in Portugal. Here, due to regional regulations, guests over 12 years of age continue to require proof of complete vaccination or recovery from COVID-19 in order to participate in Douro cruises. In addition, the requirement to wear a mask and the need for a rapid antigen test prior to boarding remain in place.The additional hygiene measures such as the strengthened cleaning and disinfection protocols are maintained everywhere onboard. The A-ROSA Care Team continues to closely monitor the very dynamic developments and will adapt the protection and hygiene protocol to changing circumstances if necessary.Since the start of the season in March 2022, the A-ROSA ships have once again been sailing on the Rhine, Danube, Douro, Rhône and Seine. Guests can enjoy high-quality drinks all day as well as breakfast, lunch, coffee and dinner as a buffet in the premium all-inclusive tariff. Both ships were laden with essential supplies to assist multiple villages who have suffered with lack of visits from cruise passengers and unemployment during COVID. Essential supplies were provided such as groceries, medical supplies, reusable personal hygiene packs, baby packs and seeds for edible plants.The fundraiser was initiated by Captain Cook Cruises who worked in conjunction with the Rotary Clubs of Sydney Cove and Nadi on the project. Captain Cook Cruises were very grateful for the generous contributions from their past passenger network, social media followers, a Tourism Fiji Australia travel industry fundraiser and general public as well as the significant contribution made by The Rotary Club of Sydney Cove.Captain Cook Cruises helped to ensure the villages receiving the aid were those who had been most affected by unemployment of hospitality workers as well as the absence of visits from passengers on Reef Endeavour which had ceased her itineraries to the region during this time. Carnival had already cancelled the Sept. 5 departure for Carnival Glory.Carnival Glory arrived at the Port of New Orleans on Friday and underwent a required U.S. Coast Guard inspection. The ship began provisioning food, water and materials to prepare for up to 2,600 hospital workers, first responders, city and utility workers and other emergency personnel to join the ship. The ship will stay in port and serve as emergency housing for frontline workers directly involved in the city's infrastructure recovery and healthcare needs.Holland America Line Announces Spring 2022 Return-to-Service Dates for Final Three Ships in the FleetBy late (northern) spring 2022, Holland America Line will have a complete fleet back to cruising with the restart of operations for Noordam, Oosterdam and Westerdam. Noordam will restart with a March 14, 2022, cruise in Japan; Oosterdam will begin cruising May 1 in the Mediterranean, and Westerdam will return to service May 8 in Alaska. The ships will join Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Rotterdam and Zuiderdam, which have returned to service or are slated to restart cruising by December 2021. Volendam and Zaandam will return in May 2022.Noordam Plans Return to Service in JapanHolland America Line is working with Japanese authorities to begin cruising for Noordam next spring in Japan with four sailings scheduled.When Noordam sets sail in March, the ship plans to offer three 14-day cruises that deeply explore Japan. Sailing roundtrip from Yokohama (Tokyo), Japan, the ship makes several calls around the exotic country and with a one- or two-day visit on each itinerary to South Korea, Taiwan or Russia. The 14-day journeys can be combined to form 28-day Collectors' Voyages.In April, Noordam will cross the Pacific Ocean and sail a season in Alaska with cruises between Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Whittier, Alaska.Oosterdam Returns to the MediterraneanGuests eager to visit the Med next year can embark Oosterdam beginning with the May 1 departure. The ship will sail the season in the region, cruising between Civitavecchia (Rome) and Venice, Italy; and Barcelona, Spain, and Venice; or roundtrip from Venice on seven- and 12-day itineraries. Oosterdam will explore ports in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Montenegro, Croatia, Albania, France, Malta and Israel.Following a transatlantic crossing in November 2022, the ship will transit the Panama Canal and take a southerly route to offer a series of South America and Antarctica expeditions ranging from 14 to 22 days between Buenos Aires, Argentina, and San Antonio (Santiago), Chile.Westerdam Sets Sail for AlaskaWhen Westerdam returns on May 8, the ship will embark on a season of seven-day Alaska cruises roundtrip from Seattle, Washington. Seabourn has updated the restart of one of its remaining ships, Seabourn Quest, in time for the summer season in the Mediterranean on May 10, 2022.The ship will resume service in Europe, where it will spend its summer 2022 season homeporting from Venice, Italy. These funds will be used to finance the development of zero and near-zero GHG fuels and propulsion technologies. As new alternative fuel sources become available at sufficient scale in the future, the Company will evaluate how these can accelerate its long-term carbon reduction strategy.Implement Voluntary Carbon Offset Program. The Company has announced its commitment to purchase carbon credits to offset three million MTCO2e over a three-year period to help bridge the gap in decarbonisation efforts until new technology becomes available. On my radio show tonight, I'm taking you on an audio journey. Recorded on the Holland America ship Oosterdam, my first hour represents every part of my beginning of the year vacation. It starts with my flight to San Diego and adventures in that amazing California city. That part includes sea lions, live streaming a fun Phish New Year's Eve show in the hotel room and watching a Nirvana tribute band at a bar. From there we board a big ass boat and sail the Pacific Ocean for a couple of days. As the show progresses, we hear sounds representing the Mexican ports of Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas. Finally we sail home. So grab a tropical drink, enjoy some fine legalized in California herbs and tune in tonight at 8. Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with meeeeeeee! ???? ???? ???????? ??????????????????????????

Let's Talk about Cruising [caption id="attachment_87" align="alignleft" width="300"] I did a full round of PT and OT exercises at the rail of the ms Oosterdam overlooking Cabo San Lucas.[/caption] Last month I joined the 8th Annual JoCo Cruise. It was my 6th time with the group and my first as a traveler with disabilities. It's a full boat charter of Holland America's ms Oosterdam. 1500 folks joined us for this week-long nerd summer camp. I always have a great time and recommend it to anyone interested in geeky pursuits, board gaming, science fiction, fantasy, writing, podcasting, and great music. The community, while not perfect, is fantastic. I also found it to be quite accessible. While the buffet proved challenging, the staff was incredibly helpful. My accessible cabin was comfortable and the roll in shower meant I didn't have to step over a tub wall. It was also the first time I've been in a pool since my stroke. It was interesting learning more about buoyancy and my affected limbs. It gave me a chance to actually JUMP on my weak leg. [caption id="attachment_88" align="aligncenter" width="300"] This is my sunburn on the first day I burned. The burn line is from my GivMohr sling. I was wearing SPF 70 at the time.[/caption][caption id="attachment_91" align="aligncenter" width="300"] There is a cord near the shower head. As a warning, don't mistake it for a clothes line that failed to retract. It's actually an emergency cord that calls the stateroom attendant to your shower in case you have an emergency. I don't recommend tugging on it to retract it.[/caption][caption id="attachment_90" align="aligncenter" width="300"] The beds are slightly smaller than twin size, but they are reasonably comfortable. I did have to request a special extension cord for my CPAP machine.[/caption][caption id="attachment_92" align="aligncenter" width="300"] There is actually a decent amount of space in the small, inexpensive cabin. The couch also turns into a couch to accommodate a third person. That might be a bit too cramped, though.[/caption] [caption id="attachment_86" align="aligncenter" width="300"] The theater on the ship had a full row of accessible seating on the same level of the doors. It was convenient and the view was still pretty good.[/caption] Hack of the Week Carry a bag. I often carry a nylon tote bag like these Chicobags (affiliate link). Carrying stuff is difficult in general. One hand doesn't work yet and one carries the cane or holds the handrail on the stair. I use it for my coffee thermos, phone, tablet, paper notebook, getting the mail, or whatever other random carrying I need to do. The Port of San Diego is celebrating the installation of a $7.1 million system that will enable cruise ships at berth to be powered by a shore-side electrical source, which will benefit the community by reducing air pollution. Recorded while aboard the beautiful MS Oosterdam, during Gary's cruise to Mexico; also known as the "South of the Border" cruise, alternatively called, "We Don't Need No Steenkeeng Ego!" As you will hear, 'a splendid time was had by All.' Our podcast at sea features a number of Questions for Gary, a great deal of Course-based discussion, and as might be expected, a lot of laughter and joy-filled interaction among all of us who became, as we have on our previous cruises together, just like a loving, extended family. This "live" recording really captures the energy and spontaneity of Gary and Gene creating a podcast with the involvement of a live audience.
