It's a VIBE. She sat down with me to talk about the journey releasing her new record, plus stepping into our power as a creative + entrepreneur. We also discussed ways to stay inspired + motivated, working on knowing our worth, some of the challenges creatives + entrepreneurs face, + how to work on over coming them, + so much more. Raised on Blues, Classic Rock, Disco, and Motown - Meagan Hickman's music is a mood! Chicago raised and now Nashville based - Hickman's soulful pop-rock-grooves, melodies, and honest lyrics shed light on love, loss, and self-discovery. Her songwriting style blends elements of pop, rock, soul, & r&b. Drawing from childhood influences (Bill Withers, Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Wonder) and modern artists (Sara Barellies, Hayley Williams, and Maggie Rogers), Hickman's music meets listeners with an opportunity to take a step back and see fresh perspectives. Meagan's recent single, “Still Here” is a powerful and emotional pop-rock driven song that speaks to strength and survival. The track features Hickman's soulful voice telling the story of what happens as someone fights for empowerment, celebrates individuality, and embraces change. Let's head out to Lancaster Pennsylvania today, where soul and pop is not on everyone's playlist. But, we've got a truly original artist who treats her lyrical composition and vocal delivery with the same respect as an artist taking their brush strokes to a fresh virgin canvas. This makes perfect sense as her influences include Corinne Bailey Rae, Tori Kelly, and Stevie Wonder. We're never put in a genre-exclusive category, so why should her music be? She is soulful, with a youthful overlay of pop but also intertwined with her love of folk music and alt-rock. We're going to hang out with none other than Kiana Corley! Kiana is a multi-instrumentalist. She started at the early age of 12. She alluded to the fact that, if you play different instruments, it gives you a different perspective on songs, songwriting, and production. In Kiana's most recent album, the songs follow a storyline of a young romance, which started on shaky ground with two people pretending it was solid. She's extremely motivated by helping and inspiring others through her authentically original music. Her music video premiered on Celeb Secrets this year, and she also signed a distribution deal with Heart Songs Records. Get to know more of her, and get to listen to a solid, wonderful style, and an eclectic mix of all of the best stuff ever heard on this episode of the dHarmic Evolution with Kiana Corley. More about Kiana Corley Kiana is mostly on her Instagram, but all the links on how you can find here are provided below. Check out and support Kiana and her amazing music. Quotes: 08:45 “ I just feel like if you make music that good, it's always gonna just resurface in some way, just for the years to go on. Like, I think they definitely deserve to be forever growing. “ 17:22 “I'm really blessed to be able to have that ability to share things in my life with people. Especially because I'm definitely not a person that talks about myself in a regular sense. I'm not going to tell you my whole life when we first meet, but I will share that with you if you listen to things that I wrote. That's kind of my way of teaching people about myself.” 38:03 “I try to just take care of my body as much as I can. Because I think that if you don't do some sort of movement, or some sort of meditation, or journaling, or anything like that, it can catch up to you. Your mental well-being and your physical well-being are definitely connected I believe, and they're both equally as important.” 41:00 “Just really pursue the honest opportunities and be honest with yourself about what you want as an artist and what you can bring. Be confident too, because everybody brings something different and all of it is needed. There's a space for all of it. There's a place for literally every artist, I really truly believe that, as well. So, keep going.” Timestamps: 01:28 Introducing Kiana Corley 04:04 What did Kiana listen to growing up that got her into classically written songs? 09:33 Listen to “Chestnut” by Kiana Corley 12:40 Kiana tells us about the song “Chestnut.” 14:05 Kiana took us back to the time when she felt in her heart that she is becoming a songwriter. 18:42 When did Kiana feel like she was growing as a songwriter, and embraced and owned it? 22:57 Listen to “Lukewarm” by Kiana Corley 26:35 The metaphor behind the song “Lukewarm” 28:12 When did Kiana realize that she has lasered on the sound, timbre, and style that she has now? 30:24 What music school did Kiana go to? 31:22 How did Kiana become a multi-instrumentalist? 32:31 Kiana shares the people she works with, the production, and how her songs are born. 37:34 Outside of music, what does Kiana do in her downtime? 39:24 Kiana's message and words of wisdom for the younger musicians and the best place to connect. 42:39 Listen to “Ride On” by James Kevin O'Connor Spotify Playlist: We've completed the THIRD Spotify playlist and are about to hit publish.

He's got 2 turntables, we got 2 microphones.

New York’s top-notch and prolific classical six-piece group yMusic "serves as a ready-made collaborative unit for bands and songwriters, and has lent its distinctive sound to dozens of albums, most recently In The Blue Light by Paul Simon" (yMusic's Bandcamp.) They've played with the likes of Simon, Bruce Hornsby, Regina Spektor, Ben Folds, and English indie folk trio The Staves. Their most recent recording is of music by Marcos Balter, "...which enables us to fly", a multimedia work, in collaboration with choreographers Bill T. Jones (who came out of retirement to dance for the first time in public in 9 years) and Dianne McIntyre. For this in-studio session, yMusic teams up with the sophisticated pop-soul songwriter Emily King for brand-new orchestral pop-soul music, sure to be one-of-a-kind. - Caryn Havlik ...which enables us to fly by yMusic
Artistry, Activism and Authenticity with Lex Allen On episode 15 we are joined by Milwaukee's own, Lex Allen. Based out of Milwaukee, WI. Lex Allen is a Soul Pop singer/songwriter that connects all ages, genders, genres and races at their over-the-top emotional, roller-coaster of a live show. Lex creates musical space for those seeking something to help through the hurt and connects with those needing inspiration to help them see their self worth. They make music for that 5 a.m. listener who wants something loud and maybe a little ratchet to get them through their day. Allen's music breathes love and liberation. Lex (who uses they/them pronouns) joins us to discuss their unique path to success and how their deep roots in the community has shaped them as an artist and individual. We delve into the many creative avenues in which Lex explores, and the process of bringing projects to fruition. They explain how being a black, queer, non-binary person has fueled their mission to be an activist, which they are best able to do by being their true self. Lex brings authenticity and a no-apologies attitude not only to their music, but to the way they live their life. We also chat about: Where they find creative inspiration Performing for Obama!!!! Including The Driters, The Duprees, Gene Pitney, Brenda Lee, The Coasters... We launch another show with the fabulous Drifters, Bobby Hendricks singing lead on "Drip Drop" later covered by Dion. Our twin spin is Sanford Clark's "The Fool" and its b-side "Lonesome For A Letter" for the class of '56. A special treat for Del Shannon fans - you'll hear the song he wrote and produced himself "I Go To Pieces" which was famously covered by English act Peter & Gordon in the mid-Sixties.
Featuring Big Joe Turner, The Drifters, Brenda Lee, Lou Christie, Four Seasons... Our story behind the song this week involves Doc Pomus, who was crippled for life and who walked on crutches (a victim of polio). His wife enjoyed dancing, but he couldn't dance with her. He took her out one night and allowed her to dance with other men, as long as she kept the last dance for him. Hence, the song "Save The Last Dance For Me" which he wrote for the Drifters. Our twin spin this week is the Eternals' "Rockin In The Jungle" and its b-side "Rock & Roll Cha Cha Cha" for the class of '61.
I want my sound to be authentic of the inspiration I have found in myself. Life is so damn hard, and we are not supposed to do it alone. I want my music to truly engage with the listener to ignite in them to pursue that crazy thing they’ve been shoving down into their gut. Musically, I love groovy riffs, intricate synths, but I also love the process of creating sounds, whether it be from opening a can near the mic, or sampling a sound backwards from a piece that truly means something to me. I would say Soul Pop is where I see myself to lay, but I also like pressing the boundaries of genres, and am very versatile vocally to stretch those limits. And I really would love to collab with other artists outside the Pop genre. What, if anything, inspires/influences your sound? Oh man. I am a die hard, child of the 90’s. I love 90’s R&B, Pop, Hip Hop, Alternative, Folk, Blues. And I love Jewel, Alanis Morrisette, John Mayer, Christina Aguilera, Gloria Estafan, Paula Abdul, Prince, Queen, My parents tracks they put me on, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys. The list goes on; More recently in my young adult life, Sara Bareilles, Sia, Sam Smith, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Madison Beer, Years & Years. Each artist for a different reason…like our sound might not vibe but their performances I resonate with, or their aura or brand in general is tight. I think all of my experiences and sounds that I’ve heard have influenced me to write in one way or another. Inspiration can happen anywhere for any reason and that’s what so inviting about the musical experience

“Milwaukee native Lex Allen, is reinventing old soul for a new generation, with his own sound that has been dubbed “Soul Pop with a kick”. He has been compared to new aged singers John Legend and Justin Timberlake, with the articulation of indie powerhouse Jason Mraz. “Dare to be different” is the motto he lives by through and through, it’s evident in his enlightened lyrical style that is way beyond his years.” From Tap Milwaukee: “Produced by Q The Sun, “This Is Our Year” is Lex Allen’s newest joint and it’s bangin’. Off top, the beat is just funky with it’s thick bass and hype drums. Then with Lex’s voice on top and a guest verse from Lorde Fredd33, this not only gets you hype, but it gives you that drive to make things happen.”
