A bit of a first for PHUK. We're introducing Dave Moyle who has produced an entire mix of his own productions, which we've never done before on this podcast. It is therefore a very unique journey and adds to the variety of talent we offer and showcase on this podcast.Hugely inspired by music during his childhood, Dave became captivated by the sounds around him, ranging from various genres and movie soundtracks. He would often attempt to mix two tapes or even vinyl with tapes to create a unique blend of music. As he grew older, he frequented local events and clubs, where he was enamored by the DJs spinning and mixing tunes. This led him to purchase a set of turntables and he has been mixing ever since, covering all genres of music including 80s, 90s, Dance, House & Trance.Dave drew inspiration from well-known DJs like Armin Van Burren, Above & Beyond, Judge Jules, and Pete Tong, whom he admired for their work on their Radio 1 shows. He honed his skills in music production during his twenties, learning and perfecting his own style and sound. Dave has been a warm-up DJ for well-known artists such as Lange, Scott Bond, Solerstone, Dave Pearce, Manuel la Saux and Lee Haslem. He has also played on radio stations such as Sunderland's Spark FM, Unite Radio based in County Durham, and AATM in London. Dave has had numerous releases on record labels like Neostatics Sounds, Affiliate, Green Nights Records, and Blank Capsule Records, with many unreleased tracks on his Soundcloud account. His current sound is very unique and original, featuring nods to the 80s and 90s with melodic progressions and movie-inspired tranced-out beats. Sit back and enjoy something a little different.Tracklist: Dave Moyle - Thunderstorm Dave Moyle - Tequila Sunrise Dave Moyle - Enforcer Dave Moyle - Invasion Dave Moyle - Muscle Car Dave Moyle - Farewell Dance Dave Moyle - New Horizons Dave Moyle - Neon Touch Dave Moyle - Sirens Dave Moyle - Miami Vice Dave Moyle - Shout Dave Moyle - Trip To Mars (Unreleased Mix) Dave Moyle - Titan Moon Dave Moyle - Tengoku (Unreleased Mix) Three Drives On A Vinyl - Greece 2000 - (Dave Moyle Remix) Find more about Dave Moyle on his Soundcloud account

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
What lover of American literature doesn't remember these haunting lines: “Tell about the Midwest. What's it like there. What do they do there. Why do they live there. Why do they live at all.” Of course that was, as some of you quickly recognized, a deliberate mangling of a famous passage from William Faulkner's Absalom Absalom. It's more than a little disconcerting, as I hope you noticed, to substitute Midwest for South. The South is haunted, and mysterious, and interesting. The Midwest…isn't. But the charge that Shreve McCannon laid upon Quentin Compson can be laid upon any historian of any place in any era. Even the Midwest, as Jon Lauck would certainly agree. He's the author of The Good Country: A History of the American Midwest, 1800-1900. The last time he was on the podcast was way back in Episode 13, when we talked about his manifesto The Lost Region: Toward a Revival of Midwestern History. For Further Investigation We haven't had that many talks about the Midwest, or its people; but recently we talked about South Dakota with Jon Lauck's friend and neighbor Ben Jones. Much farther in the rear view mirror is a conversation with Jane Simonsen about Black Hawk, chief of the Saux and Meskwaki tribes, which involved the forced removal of those people from the lands in the Midwest. The Midwestern History Association The Midwestern History Association has a journal, the Middle West Review; and a podcast, Heartland History Was the Midwest the American Boeotia? There's a comparative history question for you. Episode 294: Black Suffrage The Town That Started the Civil War was mentioned in the course of the conversation; the book for children or teens I was thinking of is The Price of Freedom: How One Town Stood Up to Slavery One book to read about Oberlin, Ohio as a utopian community that failed is Elusive Utopia, which focuses on Oberlin after the Civil War I was trying to remember Rick Atkinson's An Army at Dawn: The War in North Africa, 1942-1943, which focuses on Villisca's Company F (which is the only company in the Iowa National Guard to build its own armory with funds raised from the local community) as well as other units from southwest Iowa that served in the battles for North Africa. We're joined by Emeritus Professor Françoise Le Saux to discuss the unique work of Christine de Pizan. An Italian by origin, de Pizan was charged with writing manuals on good governance and the conduct of war for the medieval French crown prince who became Charles VI. Her main concern in a time of civil and foreign wars was to reduce civilian suffering, and to make the decision to go to war truly a last resort. Exceedingly well-read, building on the writings of Aristotle, Vegetius and the French cleric Honoré Bovet, de Pizan created benchmarks for good governance in peace and conflict. Unusually for her time, she saw insurgencies as functions of poor governance and provided advice on how to govern wisely and justly. She promoted conflict mediation by bringing together princes and experts to listen to disputing parties and identify possible resolutions short of war. If war was nevertheless required, she reiterated rules to prevent the conflict from degenerating into unnecessary destruction. The only known female strategic theorist from the time, and highly regarded by the Dukes of Burgundy Philip the Bold and John the Fearless, she was something like the French Courts, the Development, Concepts and Doctrine Centre, and the Institute for Public Policy Research all rolled into one. Professor Françoise Le Saux, our expert consultant on de Pizan, was formerly Professor of French at the University of Reading. She has worked extensively on issues of translation and cultural adaptation in the Middle Ages.

In part two of my extraordinary conversation with Graeme Le Saux, we hear about dressing-room bigotry and bullying, and the seismic culture change that needs to occur at a club in order to smash the conspiracy of fearful silence that sustains it.If Graeme felt like an outsider at Chelsea, at Blackburn Rovers he was part of a band of brothers whose incredible work-ethic and self-belief narrowly won them the league against the mighty Manchester United in 1995. It was Graeme's finest hour, and he lauds the leadership of Kenny Dalglish and his assistant Ray Harford.Subscribe to The Big Interview YouTube channel See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Graeme Le Saux spent numerous family holidays in Mallorca, but he couldn't have guessed that one day he would become a non-executive director at the island's – now La Liga – football club. Real got promoted after a thrilling play-off with Deportivo and now the challenge is to keep improving while staying in the top flight.Graeme was an elegant left-back with Chelsea, Blackburn and Southampton, and he tells us about his toughest opponents, offering insight into how the likes of Brian Laudrup, Chris Waddle and a young Cristiano Ronaldo bedazzled and befuddled. Graeme just loved the challenge.Subscribe to The Big Interview YouTube channel See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

In this special Thursday edition of the podcast, Brian kicks off his favorite time of the year (football season) with a new mini deep dive celebrating The Office's Fantasy Football League, formed by the cast and crew of the show. As the league celebrates their 17th season, Brian will invite a new member each week to talk all things The Office… and maybe a little football. For this first podcast, Brian welcomes his friend and league commissioner, Stephen Saux, to discuss his role as stand-in extraordinaire and Office MVP. The duo dives into their favorite memories from set, Steve Carell's influence on the show, the league's formation, and - most importantly - which Office characters they would draft in fantasy football.

Mark Steel has two addictions: stand-up comedy (his job) and sport (watching, playing, talking about it). He's certain that the two have much in common - risk taking, performance anxiety, dealing with crowd hostility and more. His guest this week is former Premiership and England footballer, Graeme Le Saux, whose strategies for coping with playing at the highest level are more similar than you might think to Mark's own experiences - especially when it comes to dealing with crowds who don't really like you. In this series, he meets Dr. Faye Didymus, a sports psychologist at Leeds Beckett University (who was impressed by his flow-state, but would like him to reduce his dependence on ironing). And Mark also meets former World Champion snooker player, John Parrott. All three programmes are available as podcasts after broadcast. And there are extra, un-broadcast, bits in the John Parrott & Graeme Le Saux podcasts. Producer in Bristol: Karen Gregor.

Former England footballer Graeme le Saux champions the life of writer, broadcaster and conservationist Gerald Durrell. Graeme and presenter Matthew Parris are joined in the studio by Durrell's widow, Lee. Gerald Malcolm Durrell (1925 - 1995) was a pioneering conservationist who took on the established "zoo community" by emphasising the need to preserve endangered species, rather than just repeatedly dip in to the natural world for more animals to amuse and entertain. His work culminated in the creation of his own zoo on Jersey. It was there that a teenage islander called Graeme le Saux helped out in the gorilla enclosure, before moving on to play at left back for Chelsea and England.
