This episode is a special one as it's a recap of our 2022 She Hit Refresh Mijas, Spain retreat that I hosted in April. I sit down with Astrid Provence who is an experienced global facilitator, coach, speaker, and performance artist from South Africa who joined me at the retreat to help facilitate sessions throughout the week. Come listen as we give you an insight into what the retreat is all about! What we discuss The origins of the She Hit Retreat The purpose of the retreat What kinds of women attend the retreat Why they attend the retreat Where the retreat took place The workshops we led What excursions we had What we all did in our free time during the week and much more! About Astrid Astrid Provénce (She/Her) is an experienced global facilitator, coach, speaker, and performance artist from South Africa, now based in Madrid, Spain. She has spent over 8 years studying personal development, leadership, and spiritual principles. She has worked internationally, having developed and led workshops in over 10 countries. Having studied with The International Coach Federation (ICF), Landmark Worldwide, and great teachers like the late Shakti Malan at Shakti Shiva Academy and Mary Morrisey at The Brave Thinking Institute, she has honed her skills in holding groups through deep processes. Like many women, she grew up in a culture that did not guide, celebrate, or support her sexual development. She embarked on her own sexual awakening in her early thirties that helped her shed layers of shame and disconnection from herself. This led her on a journey to find her passion as a guide to support women in their own re-membering of their pure and empowering erotic nature. She coaches women in sensual wellness, to find their confidence from within, and live a joyful and juicy life. Astrid is the co-founder and sensual embodiment coach at Into The Boudoir (ITB). ITB offers sensual experiences for women, workshops, and boudoir photography with a mission that all women celebrate their bodies and reclaim their innate sensual power. Looking to move to Europe? An Interview with Melissa Llarena
101: Leveraging Your Emotional Landscape to Figure Out Who You Really Are

An Interview with Melissa Llarena

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 23, 2021 46:34

I've come to realize that while the central themes of this podcast have been creativity, courage, and curiosity, the deepest core of this is our identity. Today, I'll be covering how some of my guests have uncovered their truest identities, whether you can truly change your identity, and what this whole identity crisis and searching is really all about.  You'll be hearing 10 excerpts from my last 100 episodes that I carefully curated because they've meant something to me, and I surmise, they can change the way you think about getting to know yourself. When it comes to our personal evolutions of who we are, I have noticed three types of moments that truly make an impact on our identities.  The first type is how traumatic experiences can put our identities in question. Such as Cepee Tabibian, Co-Founder of She Hit Refresh, who lost her two parents back-to-back and decided to leave a good Texan life for a great Spanish existence (Episode 45), and Marshall Dun, who after losing his brother to suicide, he learned how to trust himself and detach his identity from the allure of external desires and riches to become a spiritual leader. (Episode 60). The second type is those expansive moments that stretch our identities. For instance, Raphael Rowe leveraged the world of media and journalists to help him clear his name so he could eventually become a journalist himself for the BBC and on the Netflix series Inside the World's Toughest Prisons (Episode 89). The James Beard Award Recipient, Gabriele Corcos, also stretched his identity when he started out as a percussionist, then decided to become an entrepreneur, then farmer, and eventually, a politician (Episode 47). The third type is those rising moments such as when World Rugby Hall of Famer Phaidra Knight felt this push to greatness from her family, she decided to rise up to the challenge – including the challenge of expectations (Episode 17). Also, when I interviewed James Altucher back in Episodes 5 & 6, I knew I had to rise up to the occasion if I wanted to become a podcaster and interview my first multimillionaire. So I had to step up to the plate and figure it out.  You can be told to be someone by everyone and you can perform for everyone else's claps. However, ultimately, it is not until you decide to learn about what you want, and who you want to be that you will begin to truly live your life. It's that journey, which many of us avoid taking, that we can ever become who we were meant to be. You cannot watch someone else on their journey and expect to get to know yourself and change. You just have to be willing to take meaningful steps in your own evolution and feel every emotion that comes your way. My plan is to delve into these emotions next. So what emotions would you like me to feature in my next 100-podcasts? Any ones that have been a struggle? I want to hear from you! And, if you want to learn more about my Courage Makerspace online mastermind program and how it can help you boost your courage, I'm only a DM or email (Melissa[@]melissallarena.com) away.  Highlights Jonathan Arons, Episode 4 Music: You will surely get to know yourself when you are pissed off. Jonathan Arons uncovered that music was his muse and he was able to leverage his sensitivities as a child in order to find the courage to be who he has become today. Art or music is all about feeling. It's the most universal way to connect with anybody from any walk of life.  David Roberts, Episode 18 Joy: You get to know yourself when you are elated or when you have access to an experience or an emotion that makes you feel like joy is personified. New York Times bestselling illustrator David Roberts talks about imagination in this interview.  Michelle Ghilotti, Episode 7 Grief: Former Starbucks and Nike advertising executive turned entrepreneur Michelle Ghilotti decided to create an expanse during a period of her life when she had the option to recoil after losing loved ones in her life. She decided to grieve in the community while also acknowledging how other people experienced grief in their own ways. Sree Sreenivasan, Episode 11 Ask: You will get to know yourself when you have to be vulnerable and ask for help. Sree Sreenivasan, former Chief Digital Officer of New York City, used the power of social media to leverage his network and ultimately realized that people want to help.  Jeff Bollow, Episode 78 Love: You will get to know yourself when you let love in. Award-winning filmmaker Jeff Bollow shared his perspective and sense of humor on being an older dad. He offers up a metaphor for how having a son and this new identity as a dad has changed his perspective, quite a lot.   Beth Comstock, Episode 65 Mama's Love: You will get to know yourself when you let love in as a mom. Former CMO of GE, Beth Comstock talks about how being a mom helped her as a people leader. She talks about learning how to ask for help because you can't do everything. Ask your partner, your kids, and your colleagues for help. Diane Bell, Episode 21 Opportunity: You will definitely get to know yourself when doors get slammed in your face, especially if you're exploring or making your way into a new identity. Award-winning screenwriter and director Diane Bell talks about how she was going to do a movie with Mickey Rourke and then all of a sudden, she got an email that could have shattered heard, but didn't. Victor Hanning, Episode 68 Senses: You get to know yourself when you let yourself become absorbed by your senses. Cepee Tabibian is the Founder of She Hit Refresh, a global community for women aged 30-plus who want to break free from routine and start a life of travel—specifically moving abroad or quitting their job to travel long-term. Tune in as Cepee shares stories of how she has immersed herself in new cultures, used those opportunities to try on new identities even at the age of 37, and take notes about all of the resources that are available for women who want to fulfill their wishes of exploring an unconventional life filled with travel today. And if you are thinking of Europe as your top destination then Cepee has the book you’ll want to grab immediately.  Here’s some further background on Cepee. She is a citizen of the world, she is half Colombian and half Iranian, and proudly considers herself a native Texan. She loves jumping feet first into the unknown and encouraging others to make their own leap in life.  Through her Facebook group, podcast, annual retreats, online course called #MAKEITHAPPEN, and the new digital book I'm Outta Here! An American's Ultimate Visa Guide to Living in Europe, she inspires her community members to take imperfect action and make their dreams a reality.  Highlights:  What is home? Especially if you move around a lot. (5:53)  Cepee shares how she didn’t know what she wanted to be until she turned 37. (7:55)  How she discovered what she was good at, could do and how that led to the beginning of She Hit Refresh. (9:27)  Try on a new identity even if you feel like an imposter. (10:01)  She Hit Refresh filled the need for a lack of resources for women who want to take or took an unconventional path and were in their 30+years. (12:33)  Seeking validation from a Facebook community for wanderlusts with “crazy ideas” of living abroad. (13:24)  Reasons why women may not live abroad include fear of failure, finances, or embarrassment. (13:35)  It’s okay to take a pause to figure out what’s next and, Cepee discusses how to plan for that financially. (16:35)  Cepee shares why leaving a good life in pursuit of a great one is okay. (19:58)  If an idea keeps popping up you should listen to it, don’t ignore it for decades. (22:32)  Why Cepee is so action-oriented. (29:24)  Is trauma needed to feel a sense of urgency or are decades of life experience enough? (31:25)  Learn all about the book: I’m Outta Here: An American’s VISA guide for going to Europe – it includes the 16 easiest countries to which Americans can move to for more than 90-days. (34:16)  What if you don’t know the language spoken in your dream European country? (36:34)  How the COVID-19 pandemic is affecting women who lived abroad or have a travel bug. (38:29)  How to explore different cuisines and be transported to other countries through food. (39:42)  What gave Cepee the audacity to get unstuck; no need for a permission slip to try on different identities. (43:04)  The Middle Finger Project book and how living abroad enables you to try new identities or expand your identity. (44:26)  The top three things Cepee learned from living abroad 1) Give living abroad sometime before passing judgment. 2) Believe in yourself. 3) Share the journey with others i.e. finding your tribe locally. We are part of a global economy, and one that is shifting. Does your schedule mean working with someone in another timezone makes more sense? Are you okay working with someone whose native language isn't the same as yours if it means a better quality product or a better time frame? Will you choose a provider with a lower asking price if it means a time zone lag? We have a lot of questions to answer if we're going to make our best choices in the world of international hires. As digital nomads, it's easy to feel alone, and this goes for our business lives as much as it does our personal ones. The answer in both cases is reaching out, building a network. Interact, offer help, answer questions, and when you need it, ask for help. Since we're often on the move, online groups can be the best place to start. I love Digital Nomad Girls, Female Digital Nomads, and She Hit Refresh. I love our pricing discussions because so many of us have no idea where to start. Kate talked about how in insurance, pricing is tied to coverage, but that she likes to add value as well. And it got me thinking, how can we add value to our products and services without adding work to our day. Is it in the way interacting with us allows our clients to feel? Is it in a product we can create once and send as a bonus to our loyal clients? What can we do and create that make the experience of working with us an even better choice?
