Our guest this week is Ivonne Kinser, VP of Marketing & Innovation for Avocados from Mexico, the innovative marketing organization that has delivered some truly remarkable results. In our fourth episode recorded live at last month's GroceryShop event in Las Vegas, we get the inside story of how AFM went from start-up to advertising on the Super Bowl. We then dig into the details of how Ivonne and her team have elevated what could be seen as a commodity product to a highly in demand, powerful consumer brand. We also get Ivonne's perspective on how consumer and technology trends are intertwining, what it means to be channel agnostic, and how "learning agility" is key to career success. But first we share our hot-takes on the past week in retail news, including what a tight labor market portends for interest rates and inflation, why the holidays seem to come earlier and earlier every year, and what to make of Prat Vemana joining Target as their new Chief Digital & Product Officer. We also discuss Poshmark going from from Wobbly Unicorn to Prized Possession, yet more layoffs at Peloton, and how Allbirds continues to take the D out of DTC. We wrap up with REI's decision to opt out of Black Friday and a trifecta of news from a little outfit called Amazon.About IvonneIvonne is the Vice President of Marketing and Innovation for Avocados From Mexico. Her chief responsibility is to lead a high-performance team and the innovation agenda that put Avocados From Mexico on the Fast Company 2021 list of “Most Innovative Companies in the World,” and top in the branding category. In 2022 Ivonne became the first Latina to be awarded with the American Marketing Association's highest honor bestowed upon a deserving recipe, the Lifetime Achievement Award. She has also been included in the list of “100 Most Influential Latinas in the U.S.” for two consecutive years, in 2021 and in 2022. In 2018, she became one of the five women honored with the Changing the Game Award in the Brainwave category, an award given by the prestigious She Runs It organization which recognizes women within the marketing industry who are true catalysts of innovation by fearlessly making bold moves and reinventing the rules of marketing to transform their brands and their organizations. The previous year, the American Advertising Federation had included her in the list of “20 Women to Watch in Dallas Advertising” and awarded her the Shining Star Award, which recognizes women in the Dallas advertising industry who are breaking glass ceilings.Over the span of more than 20 years in marketing, Ivonne has played leadership roles in multiple corporations representing multibillion brands, as well as in top advertising agencies such as Lintas, McCann Erickson Worldwide, and The Richards Group, working with well-known brands in almost every category. In 2014, she joined Avocados From Mexico as the Head of Digital Marketing, and in seven years she built the organization's digital practice which became one of the most successful digital groups in terms of performance and innovation. Under her leadership, AFM's digital work won dozens of accolades and recognitions, including the only brand to be among the top two position on Merkle's list of “Best Digital Super Bowl Campaigns” for five consecutive years, from 2016 through 2020; an ANA REGGIE Award in 2020 for Disrupted Use of Digital Technology; and a Gold (Sol De Oro) for AFM's 2017 Super Bowl digital campaign in the category of Real-Time Content at the FIAP competition in Buenos Aires. This festival is recognized in the Latin American region as one of the two most important festivals, together with Cannes. She has addressed hundreds of keynotes — across the nation and internationally — about Avocados From Mexico's digital marketing successes, and she is a regular guest speaker at the IPADE, the top business school in Mexico.Innovation, disruptive creativity, and a nontraditional approach to marketing are the hallmarks of Ivonne's work. Some sobering statistics emerged from the recent #Inclusive100 survey of the media/marketing industry: Women and people of color are actually declining in the executive ranks. In this conversation with survey creators, Lynn Branigan, president and CEO of She Runs It, and Carol Watson, senior director at Diversity Best Practices, tell MediaVillage how we can do better and get it right - starting with the need to benchmark where we're at now. Learn about the three goals of "100" that inspired their #Inclusive100 survey. “Companies really want to know how to move forward. ... You can't just say you've been doing a lot, you have to measure, and understand what's happening with LGBTQ shifts, disability, veterans...all of those things. It's a very holistic, data-based approach which has been really missing in the marketplace. ...It’s like going to the doctor for your annual checkup. It's not a five-minute visit, it’s a great diagnostic scan and we all have to take our medicine,” Watson says. Learn why marketing + measurement are the biggest drivers of success through this podcast, and through MediaVillage’s Advancing Diversity initiative. In fact listen to the previous interviews with all of this year’s inductees to the Advancing Diversity Hall of Honors. There will be more coverage on MediaVillage of the forthcoming Honors, Council meeting, the Diversity Job Meet-Up and the Creative Tensions® experience all taking place during CES on January 8th in Las Vegas.

Overview The Stevens Group is pleased to present a new podcast series that salutes the masters of public relations and revels in their observations, insights and advice to PR professionals. This new series is part of the ongoing partnership between The Stevens Group and CommPRO to bring to PR, digital/interactive and marketing communications agencies the wisdom of those who have reached the top of the PR profession. About Our Guest Marian Salzman, SVP, Global Communications, Philip Morris International (PMI) Marian Salzman, senior vice president, global communications at Philip Morris International (PMI), has been named one of the world's top five trendspotters and is among the world's most-awarded public relations executives. In recent years, she has been listed in PRWeek's Global Power Book and as a PR News Top Woman in PR. She is also the recipient of the She Runs It 2017 Changing the Game Award, has been inducted into the PRWeek Hall of Femme and Connecticut Women's Hall of Fame, and was on the Holmes Report Top Innovators List and on Business Insider's 25 Most Powerful PR People. In April 2018, Marian moved to Switzerland and embarked on her greatest challenge to date, heading global communications at Philip Morris International (PMI) as it embarks on its journey to build a smoke-free future. Charged with developing a proactive, multilayered communications program to accelerate PMI's vision, Marian is forging active and productive alliances with NGOs, advocacy groups, regulators and other parties involved in shaping the environment in which a smoke-free future can be realized. Since Marian took charge of global communications at PMI, she has made bold strategic moves to transform the function itself and how it sits within the company. Her goal: reintroduce PMI into, as she puts it, “civilized society” and engage that society in meaningful conversations about the future of tobacco. Reporting directly to Global CEO André Calantzopoulos, she is remaking the group—including directly overseeing a staff of almost 100 communications professionals based on three continents who are responsible for media relations, scientific engagement, content development, crisis management, internal communications, sponsorships and more. She is ensuring that PMI is positioned at the forefront of a new discussion about tobacco and the reduced-risk products (RRPs) available today and in development. Marian Salzman—A Globally Recognized Trendspotter Before joining PMI, Marian was CEO of Havas PR North America for nearly a decade, and chaired its global PR assets known as its PR Collective (networked but not a network). There, she reshaped the creative output, creating one of the most buzzed-about boutique agencies in North America and achieving top-five status at key U.S. and global awards shows. Marian also served on the Havas Worldwide general managers group and as co-chairman of the company's first international steering committee for its social media assets. In recognition of these efforts, she was named PRWeek's PR Professional of the Year for 2011. Prior to Havas PR, Marian was the chief marketing officer at both Porter Novelli and JWT Worldwide and the chief strategic officer at Euro RSCG Worldwide (Havas Creative). Her first international assignment was in the 1990s, as the Amsterdam-based lead of TBWA's Department of the Future. Marian was also an entrepreneur who launched American Dialogue (Cyberdialogue) focus groups in cyberspace back in the early 1990s, when the online world was seen as a place for geeks and oddballs, ultimately selling the company a few years later. Her business partner then was advertising agency legend Jay Chiat; ultimately, he appointed her Chiat/Day's first head of emerging media and consumer insights ahead of Chiat/Day merging with TBWA International.

Be a leader first. Start without the battle. Then contemplate where the other issues fall. Role modeling is so important - you have to see it to be it. Companies are recognizing the importance of culture and values, in light of what consumers demand. Brands like Mattel are celebrating the diversity of women and working hard to understand culture and relevance.
