Tasting Notes:  The Louis Vuitton of vodka (actually owned by LVMH, so there's that) is made with 100% organic Polish rye and distilled in Poland. At the top of the luxury imported vodka game, it was always French Wheat vodka in the form of Grey Goose, or rye-based Polish vodka in the form of Belvedere. Widely known for it's smoothness compared to other vodkas in its category, Belvedere truly is on the cool side of the pillow. Smooth to a fault indeed, you'll taste every silky sinew of an olive or lemon peel in your favorite martini.

He concurrently completed a second degree in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech before beginning his career in the information technology sector, initially consulting on Healthcare Systems. In 2001, Donae entered the alcohol industry, working on the promotional side of several iconic brands in the US, before joining the luxury group LVMH. During his 10+ years with the company, he worked across brands such as Dom Perignon, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Moet & Chandon, Belvedere Vodka, and Hennessy Cognac. While with LVMH, in 2011, Donae created the first-ever luxury champagne bar in a sports arena at American Airlines Arena during the Miami Heat's championship run. In 2016, Donae became the Regional Director of the Southeast US, Caribbean, and Latin America regions of Armand de Brignac Champagne. He was responsible for the brand's commercial and marketing goals in each territory. Throughout his career, Donae found that, in general, the wine industry was not embracing the multicultural consumer. He wanted to create a quality product inspired by his zest for life and travel that homed in on catering to the margin that had been overlooked, particularly when it came to rosé. With a commitment to creating an authentic and exceptional St. Tropez rosé and breaking tradition and convention by reimagining the luxury wine drinker and energizing the category, in summer 2019, La Fête du Rosé - a brand that speaks to all demographics - was born. The name "La Fête" translates to "the rosé party," one that everyone is invited. In 2021, the company introduced a limited-release white wine - La Fête du Blanc - which became a permanent addition to the portfolio in 2022. Under Donae's leadership, La Fête du Rosé was the fastest-growing luxury imported rosé label of 2021 and is now the #3 luxury imported rosé brand in the US, according to IRI. Since its inception, La Fête has donated a portion of the proceeds from every bottle sold to various programs that send underrepresented youth on unique travel experiences and organizations focused on creating opportunities for the BIPOC community in the wine and spirits industry. www.nopixafterdark.com Sponsors of NoPixAfterDarkPodcast Zeke's Coffee www.zekescoffee.com Maggies Farm www.maggiesfarm.com FoundStudio Shop www.foundstudioshop.com United Way Central Maryland https://uwcm.org Charm Craft City Mafia www.charmcitycraftmafia.com Siena Leigh https://www.sienaleigh.com Open Works https://www.openworksbmore.org Snug Books Baltimore https://www.snugbooks.com Baltimore Fiscal https://www.baltimorefiscal.com Pandora Box Boutique https://pandorasboxboutique.com CarVer Communications Group  https://www.therealcarver.com

The increasing influence of African spirituality on Western society is very evident. You can read it in the work of novelists like Ben Okri, see it in the work of artists such as Chris Ofili and hear it in the music of pop superstars like Beyonce. Partly driven by the desire of young people within the African diaspora to find a deeper connection to their African heritage, African spirituality is very different to Christianity or Islam; religions brought to Africa by colonizing forces. It contains many diverse beliefs which differ from region to region. There are no scriptures – the traditions are passed on by word of mouth – and ancestors play a key role. Many of the practices are not found in Western culture (such as juju), but they express deep spiritual convictions and bind societies together. To discuss African spirituality, Ernie Rea has assembled a panel of experts from across the African continent. Born in Nigeria in the West of Africa, Jacob K Olupona is Professor of African Religious Traditions at Harvard Divinity School and Professor of African American Studies in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. Mary Nyangweso was born in Kenya in East Africa and is Professor of Religious Studies at East Carolina University. And Adeola Aderemi is a Holistic Healer who bases her practice on her Isese Ifa spirituality with its origins in the Yoruba culture of Southern Nigeria. Ernie also talks to Nigerian born artist Laolu Senbanjo who now works in New York. Laolu's art is influenced by his Yoruba heritage and practice of African spirituality. His ‘Sacred Art of the Ori' (Yoruba symbols painted onto the naked body) featured on Beyoncé's 2016 Grammy award winning video for her concept album ‘Lemonade'. While most businesses are just now shifting their focus to sustainability, Belvedere Vodka had been quietly working on it for nearly a decade. "We've been working on sustainability since 2012 and in a pretty serious way, but we didn't really talk about it before. It was something that we did," says Rodney Williams, President and CEO of Belvedere Vodka. "We reduced CO2 emissions from 2012 to 2017 by 42% and we were the first distillery to win a green energy grant in 2018 from the EU, that information before the pandemic was kind of great for people who wanted to nerd out and sustainability. But now it's germane to a much broader audience who is online, who is making decisions and online and finds this commitment to quality, this commitment to the environment important their decision process." On this 240th episode of "Marketing Today," host Alan Hart speaks with Rodney Williams, president and CEO of Belvedere Vodka. With a bevy of experience leading successful marketing campaigns across a plethora of industries, Williams is truly an expert when it comes to closing the gap between a product and its consumers. To start our conversation, Williams discusses his business school experience and the nonprofit sector before he began his journey to become a marketing expert. In school at Northwestern, Williams quickly learned that "you have a strong chance of getting a good grade by joining a group with people that don't think like you." This experience helped him understand a simple fact of life; to truly be successful, you must be open to the perspectives of others. We then dive into Williams's experience working for large companies like Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble. It was his success at these companies that taught him both "the element of brand-building where you're really fundamentally problem-solving" and not only the importance of "really tapping into what was already there." Williams then takes us into his induction into the Wind and Spirits industry, which eventually led him to his current position at Belvedere. To end the conversation, we discuss how "the push for social justice has opened up brands in a big way" and how "the need for brands to take a stand and stand up for values that they believe in has never been more important." Williams touches on how the views of different cultures in the corporate business world have changed since he entered the workforce. "We're not there yet, but we're making progress!" Highlights from this week's "Marketing Today": Before business school, Rodney ran a direct mail business in Chicago that hired disadvantaged employees.1:53 Rodney has stayed in-tune with how the business world affects the communities that it is in. 3:03 Growing up in Evanston, Illinois, it was a natural fit for Rodney to attend Northwestern's business school. 3:35 After business school, Rodney worked for J&J and Procter & Gamble in a pursuit to learn sophisticated marketing. 5:32 Figuring out how to get the brand in the right position where it can connect with its customers is like a game to Rodney. 6:20 In his time at J&J, Rodney learned the ins and outs of working in an intrapreneurial environment. 6:55 Over time, Rodney slowly developed into an enhance-growth guy that has been able to take companies over the top. 8:47 J&J required that 25% of each business under its umbrella's revenue had to be from new products in the last three years. 9:15 When Rodney arrived at Band-Aid, he was able to take it from stagnant to The New York Times by using Barry Manalo's jingle. 10:22 The ability to understand the essence of a brand and what it means to the consumers allows a brand to enhance its imagery. 12:26 A former colleague's call about a dot-com opportunity led Rodney to quit his job and head to the West Coast. 13:04 Rodney's time working with OnStar eventually led to his entrance into the Wine and Spirits industry. 14:41 It was the health benefits of wine that initially drew Rodney to interview with his first wine company. 15:58 Robert Mondavi taught Rodney the importance and value of presentation. 17:20 Kendall Jackson, the number 1 chardonnay over $10, presented Rodney with an opportunity to launch the biggest product in company history. 18:37 In 2011, more women than men graduated from high school for the first time in history and saw the gender gap begin to grow. 20:28 Since coming to Belvedere, Rodney has seen that vodka takes people back to experiences they have outgrown. 21:30 Belvedere aims to add some class and flavor to an alcohol category that has become stagnant. 22:30 Just before the pandemic, Belvedere ran a study that showed people in different markets around the world valued the same things in nature. 25:12 Being the nerd that he is, Rodney used to love reading the American Demographics magazine because social culture absolutely fascinates him. 27:05 A person's lifestyle or desired lifestyle is usually reflected in the brand of alcohol that they prefer. 28:47 Due to the emotion attached to alcohol brands, they can build community, unlike other consumable products. 29:50 Nas's background as an incredibly successful venture capitalist has allowed Hennessey to include inspirational voices in their campaign. 31:22 With Rodney's vision, Belvedere has been able to connect with many demographics while also crossing borders. 34:05 Rodney's time at the direct-mail business had a huge effect on who he is today because it gave him the opportunity to change lives. 35:54 Looking back, Rodney would have been bolder and taken more risks with the opportunities that were presented to him. 38:54 Since the death of George Floyd, Belvedere has supported Race Forward, an institution that seeks to rid society of institutional racism. 42:00 As a successful African American CEO, Rodney uses his position to support diversity and spark change. 45:23 Rodney believes that social media and brands have a dark side in their ability to distort the truth. 48:30 Resources Mentioned: Belvedere Vodka Procter & Gamble Johnson & Johnson Pampers Band-Aid Band-Aid Jingle and Antibiotic on the pad OnStar / pivot from tech to benefit drove a huge increase in unaided awareness – 1999 Ad Robert Mondavi Wines (the man) Kendall Jackson, Jackson Family Moet Hennessy USA Hennessey What's your wild rabbit? How do you create an experience around an all-natural vodka that shows its history and sustainability? Learn to tell a good story.  Belvedere Vodka has long been known for its great quality and super-premium product, but only recently has the company began to focus on its historic roots and sustainable efforts. Sharing the story adds to the experience and helps customers feel more connected to the brand.  Shifting To Storytelling Instead of simply rattling off talking points and qualities of its all-natural vodka, Belvedere turns to the power of storytelling. As customers are transported to the 110-year-old distillery where the vodka is made and learn the process of turning simple ingredients into amazing spirits, they build a connection with the brand that can't come in any other way.  Though the shift to storytelling has been in the works for a while, the pandemic has played a role in changing what customers are looking for. According to president and CEO Rodney Williams, luxury products like Belvedere Vodka are now less about exclusivity and more about the values the brand stands for. Customers are now more aware of the power of nature, what they're eating and where it comes from. The focus on simple, wholesome ingredients is important to them.  Belvedere's success comes in turning its ingredients into a story. It's one thing to list all-natural ingredients and say your brand is simple and wholesome—it's another to show the power of your ingredients and what they can become. Highlighting Sustainability Belvedere's new campaign, “Made With Nature” showcases the brand's history of combining simple ingredients from nature into extraordinary vodka.   Belvedere has been sustainable and all-natural since before it was a major issue for consumers. For the past eight years, Belvedere has hosted the Raw Spirits Summit to bring together scientists and farmers to study cutting-edge techniques around sustainable agriculture. The company has been able to build on its past efforts in a time when sustainability is top of mind for many customers.  Williams says “Made With Nature” comes at a time where consumers are increasingly ready to listen to brands that embrace a natural philosophy and are working towards meaningful change. The world cares about sustainability now more than ever before.  Using Stories To Build Experience To start storytelling, Williams said the company looked at the brand's DNA and discovered the long commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability. The brand has always been committed to quality and craft, but it hasn't told the story directly before. Sharing that story resonates with younger consumers, who care about brands that are natural and have solid sustainability credentials.  But sharing a brand story will land flat if it isn't rooted into authenticity. Just like with their ingredients, customers also want realness in their stories and connections with brands.  In today's world, stories behind brands are what has lasting value to consumers. Customers are looking to build real relationships with brands and understand where they come from and what makes them tick. Focusing on authentic storytelling allows brands to connect with customers on a new level and build an amazing experience.  Every brand has a story. If told well, that story can create an amazing customer experience. Like Belvedere Vodka shows, communicating your company's DNA can make for a fascinating story and build a strong experience. In 2003, Donae entered the alcohol industry, working on the promotional side of a number of iconic brands in the U.S, before he joined the luxury group, LVMH. During his 10+ years with the company, he worked across brands such as Dom Perignon, Veuve Clicquot, Ruinart, Moet & Chandon, Belvedere Vodka and Hennessy Cognac. While with LVMH, in 2011, Donae created the first-ever luxury champagne bar in a sports arena at American Airlines Arena during the Miami Heat's championship run. In 2016, Donae became the Regional Director of the Southeast U.S, Caribbean and Latin America regions of Armand de Brignac Champagne in which he was responsible for the brand's commercial and marketing goals in each territory. While with Armand de Brignac, he achieved a 206% increase of sales in the Southeast U.S. for the brand. Throughout his career, Donae found that in general, the wine industry was not embracing the multicultural consumer (in messaging, marketing/event participation, social media, etc). As an African-American man himself, he wanted to create a quality product inspired by his zest for life and travel that honed in on catering to the margin that had been overlooked, particularly when it came to rosé. With a commitment to create a St. Tropez rosé that is both authentic and exceptional, in 2017 Donae went directly to the esteemed Domaine Bertaud Belieu winery. After several trips and a number of blending and tasting sessions, in summer 2019, La Fête du Rosé was born - a brand that speaks to all demographics with a focus on targeting the multicultural audience; hence the name “La Fête” – which translates to “the rosé party” – one that everyone is invited. Donae splits his time between Miami and Atlanta, where he lives with his fiancée and their 2 year old son, Noah.  For more information:  https://lafeterose.com/ Social Media: Instagram: @lafeterose Facebook: @lafeterose

Fever-Tree North America CEO Charles Gibb describes himself as “globally mobile,” and, based on his resume, that’s an apt description. Although he’s lived and worked in New York for nearly a decade, his career in the spirits industry has included executive-level roles based in cities across Europe and Australia. In an interview included in this episode, Gibb said that the experience has helped shape his leadership of Fever-Tree North America, the U.S.-based subsidiary of the super-premium mixer brand. “When you live in a country, you really understand what drives [and] motivates the people,” he said. “You appreciate the cultural diversity, the differences, and you get newfound respect for people and the way they live their lives.” As part of our wide-ranging interview, Gibb spoke about his work in the spirits business leading up to Fever-Tree, including a high-profile role as the President and CEO of Belvedere Vodka. He also discussed how his experience in British Army taught him about the importance of communication and humor, spoke about the evolution of the global market for spirits and mixers and why he believes that Fever-Tree can be a brand for all consumers. Show notes: 2:43: Charles Gibb, CEO, Fever-Tree North America -- Gibb helms Fever-Tree’s American outpost, which opened its doors in 2018 and has rapidly paid dividends for the company. According to Fever-Tree, U.S. sales grew by 21 percent year-over-year since the new office opened. In this interview, Gibb discussed the development and growth of the subsidiary and the opportunity for premium mixers in the U.S. He also spoke about how his prior experience in the spirits business prepared him for the role and recalls how his experience as an officer in the British Army and perspective from living in cities around the world have molded his leadership style. Sidenote: Gibb explained what a “prat” is and why you wouldn’t want to be described as one. Brands in this episode: Fever-Tree, Belvedere Vodka, Hennessy

He also tells us about being blacklisted by the Iranian government after signing a 2016 letter urging President Trump to impose sanctions on the country, disappointing his mother by not becoming a doctor, and the asylum trial that awaits him in order for him to stay in the U.S. And we are triply grateful for our Jewish guest, bestselling author A.J. “Brands today are looking for immediate feedback. And if it’s negative, they’re done.” What are brands missing today? According to Mod Op’s Jeff Suhy, it all comes down to one thing — consistency. Or lack thereof. We discussed all of this and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast. About Jeff Suhy As President and Partner at Mod Op, Jeff is responsible for building the strategic function at Mod Op from the ground up. He oversees all brand, digital, media and interactive operations for the agency. His breadth and depth of experience across the advertising, music and technology industries provides a unique creative insight into building cohesive digital narratives for some of the world’s top brands including, Belvedere Vodka, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Nike, and Ubisoft. Jeff began his career in the music industry working his way up at A&R and promoted to Vice President while representing top artists such as Soundgarden. As the music industry experienced radical change with the advent of streaming music, Jeff launched Nine Systems, a technology company dedicated to developing software platforms for entertainment companies. In 2006, Nine Systems was acquired by Akamai Technologies, one of the world’s largest content delivery network providers for media and software delivery. With a unique hybrid of entertainment and technology experience, Jeff joined Zoic in 2009 to help media companies solve the riddle of how to market to consumers in the digital media era. Jeff worked with advertising agencies and gaming clients to build meaningful online media experiences. Episode Highlights A branding lesson from the band Soundgarden? Yes, please! Find this story in the first five minutes of the show. What’s lacking today? Consistency. In our hustle-and-pivot culture, brands today are afraid of doing the same thing for too long. This isn’t always the best move. Trusting the moment. Jeff’s background in the entertainment business meant we could talk about the gray areas of the creative process. What happens if your gut tells you to do something different than the research? “There are variables beyond what can be measured.” That is a great answer! What brand has made Jeff smile? Instead of a traditional smile, Jeff went with more of a smirk as he told us about the work Uber and Volkswagen are doing to turn the corner from their recent missteps. It s really true what they say You are what you eat and drink On this week s show, we call in the experts to learn about the effects of our eating and drinking habits on the human mind, body and spirit. To begin, we speak with our resident health and food policy expert, senior editor for The Atlantic, Corby Kummer. Corby s recent investigative reporting reveals that eating healthy fat while eliminating sugar and simple carbs could be a long term solution to the never ending debate about nutrition and weight control. If you ve driven around New Orleans lately, you may have spotted a mobile clinic called The Remedy Room, which specializes in administering infusion therapy to aid in rehydration and detoxification. Founder Dr. Mignonne Mary explains that there s more to what they do than help people recover after a long night out. We then turn to our old friend, bread or rather, an authority on bread. Brigid Meints, PhD student at Washington State University, tells us about the University s Bread Lab, which seeks to get back to the old ways of stone milling and baking bread as an antidote to the nutritionally empty bread found on grocery store shelves. We also get a visit from Eat Fit NOLA dietician Molly Kimball, who stopped by our studio back in February to share her challenge to give up alcohol for the 40 days of Lent. Now that Easter has come and gone, Molly is back to share her results. Finally, we learn about a healthy living program created by Belvedere Vodka s Claire Smith Warner.
