This is a rough cut of a song that could potentially be good if I didn't sing like ass. The after effects of the flu virus makes my voice sound like ass. But maybe I'll record a better version when my voice doesn't sound like ass.

Geoff Tate, the legendary former Queensryche front man, is my latest guest on the Talkin' Rock with Meltdown podcast. Geoff is always thoughtful and enjoyable to talk with.  We talked about what he's been doing this summer, which included a lot of time in Montana, fishing and hiking and singing songs around the campfire. He spoke to hanging with Anthrax front man, Joey Belladonna. Geoff's bringing his tour to District 142 in Wyandotte on September 27th.  He gave me a health update after having heart valve replacement surgery last year. He's back at it with a lot of dates, many back-to-back. He said he likes to play those shows as it keeps him sharp.  Is he surprised that an album like Operation Mindcrime has stood the test of time. "Yeah, I am surprised. I'm grateful and humbled by the experience." As far as new projects, he's working on a third Sweet Oblivion album, and possibly another one that he couldn't mention as of yet. He also gave an update on his upcoming autobiography. "I'm pretty close to getting that done." He spoke to how difficult it is to write his own story.  We wrapped things up by talking about a project he was involved with back in the 80s called Hear N' Aid project that Ronnie James Dio came up with. He talked about the legends that were included, and being totally start struck with the likes of Rob Halford, Ted Nugent and others. Great story! Check out the interview below.... -Meltdown-

For this week's Record Club, we're doing a double Lanegan following last week's Queens of the Stone Age review and talking about the legendary grunge staple Screaming Trees, Lanegan's most influential band and arguably his principle project in the early years of his storied career, but also a band that remains woefully underrated in comparison to their contemporaries. Today we celebrate the 30th anniversary of their seminal grunge classic SWEET OBLIVION, and discuss what makes it such a rich, satisfying, and great album. Let us know what YOU think! The Pipeman interviews the band Venus 5. The band is a girl band. Each member is from a different country. This year they are not performing a Hells Fest. They will be going to Metal Fest in Slovenia. The new album they think is amazing. There music is kind of sort and hard at the same time. It represents each member of the band. They all grew up in different countries, so they all bring something to a different to the music. If they like music, they like it doesn't matter the genre. They are just a fan of music. They like band from the 70s and 80s and artist in this generation. If it feels good, they like it. They are all hardworking girls. They all have their own bands. Frontiers the label put them together. They were proposed a band and they all got brought together. Frontiers is known for putting artist together to make something new. Each member is different in their own way. You can connect with them on the label's website. You can follow on all social media platforms. You can stream on all major platforms. People are all the time judging because they are woman. They are not only singers, but they are all musicians as well. They have shows in Spain in the beginning of July at Zubrin Rock Festival. That'll be their first show together. Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to present "Venus 5", the self-titled debut album from the new international metal group Venus 5! The group is composed of five amazing singers hailing from different European territories. In alphabetical order, they are: Herma (also of SNB, another Frontiers recording artist), Karmen Klinc, Jelena Milovanovic, Tezzi Persson (also of Infinite & Divine, another Frontiers recording artist), and Erina Seitllari. Each vocalist is an outstanding vocal talent, while at the same time representing a unique visual portraying a character created for Venus 5. You will simply have to experience them with your ears and eyes to believe it...Born from an idea developed by the always creative Serafino Perugino, Frontiers' President & Head of A&R, Venus 5 is primed to be one of the most fresh and exciting new musical prospects to emerge from the European metal scene in recent years. The concept for Venus 5 started with the idea of creating a “metal” version of pop projects that have proliferated over the years, but to give it the credibility that comes with an ensemble of supremely musically talented individuals. Assembling the vocalists and musicians required a tremendous amount of time and energy as the right talent had to be in place to work together cohesively and with true chemistry. There was zero interest in making this strictly about appearance, which needed to be secondary to talent. The end result is that five outstanding vocal stars in the making have been brought together from different musical environments (and countries) to work together with the vision of creating a monster album that could be unleashed on an unsuspecting public.

While comparisons to this being a "metal version" of pop projects might lead one to think that the visual aspect of Venus 5 would take the lead, please make no mistake, the music here is front and center. A team effort by producer Aldo Lonobile (Secret Sphere, Timo Tolkki's Avalon, Sweet Oblivion, etc.) and his team of writers, including Jake E. (Cyrha, ex-Amaranthe) who co-produced the vocals, Stefan Helleblad (Within Temptation, who also plays guitars on the album), and Per Aldeheim (Def Leppard, H.E.A.T, Stanfour, etc.) have created an approach which offers a feast of musical goodness.

Certainly, and highly, recommended for all the lovers of the sounds of the current European metal scene, Venus 5 takes influence from, for example, Within Temptation's latest albums and Amaranthe (not surprising given Within Temptation guitarist Stefan Helleblad and former Amaranthe vocalist Jake E.'s involvement), but adds addictive, catchy melodies. A unique flavor that only Venus 5 can offer with such an outstanding amount of vocal talent within the band.“Venus 5” Tracklist:LionessThe SimulationNothing But A HeartacheBride With Blackend EyesMonster Under Your BedInsideTamalBecause Of YouWe Are DynamiteSave YouBury MeLINE-UP:Vocals:Terese Tezzi PerssonHerma SickKarmen KlincJelena MilovanovicErina SeittlariGuitars:Stefan HellebladAldo LonobileGabriele RobottiBass:Dann ArisiDrums:Alfonso MocerinoKeyboards, Piano and Electro arrangements:Antonio AgateBand contacts:https://www.facebook.com/Venus5Musichttps://www.instagram.com/venus5music/ Take some zany and serious journeys with The Pipeman aka Dean K. Don't Call It Nothing continues its tribute to the Screaming Trees and the late Mark Lanegan by reviewing the years 1990-93. The decade began with Lanegan releasing his solo debut, The Winding Sheet, with help from Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana. Both Conner brothers released records in 1990 through New Alliance Records, a subsidiary of SST that began life as an outlet for D Boon and Mike Watt of the Minutemen. In 1991, the Trees released their major label debut and final album with original drummer Mark Pickerel, Uncle Anesthesia. Barrett Martin then replaced Pickerel in time to record the band's masterpiece, 1992's Sweet Oblivion. We end the episode in 1993 as Mark Lanegan joins The Walkabouts for a soulful walk through the Charlie Rich catalog.Support the show

The new album, "Relentless" is produced by Aldo Lonobile (Secret Sphere, Archon Angel, Timo Tolkii's Avalon) and will be released on April 9, 2021. Today, fans can get their first taste of the album with the release of the single 'Strong Pressure'. Listen HERE: https://youtu.be/Eax-jFaAkoA Pre-order/save "Relentless" on CD, Limited Edition Green Vinyl, and/or Digital formats HERE: https://orcd.co/sweetoblivion "Relentless" is the hotly anticipated sophomore album from the new metal project Sweet Oblivion, which showcases former Queensrÿche vocalist Geoff Tate. Conceived, overseen, and A&R'ed by Serafino Perugino, President and A&R director of Frontiers Records, the project sees Tate returning to a musical style he is revered for. The self-titled debut album caused quite a stir in the international hard rock and metal scene since it brought Tate back to a musical landscape akin to the sound of the stone cold classic metal albums he released with Queensrÿche during the ‘80s. But what made the album work so well was that instead of being a simple throwback, other different musical influences were thrown into the mix, allowing fans to hear Tate in a simultaneously familiar and new musical setting. While the production and main songwriting on the previous record were handled by Simone Mularoni of DGM, this time the production was instead handled by his fellow Italian metal maestro Aldo Lonobile (Secret Sphere, Timo Tolkki's Avalon, Archon Angel). Not only does Aldo have producution and songwriting credits on the album, he also features on guitar. Other musicians appearing on the album include Michele Sanna on drums, Luigi Andreone on bass, and Antonio Agate on keyboards. This time around, Tate is more involved in the songwriting and asked Aldo to draft a very special song for him, which he would ultimately sing in Italian. The song, 'Aria', also features guitars from Walter Cianciusi and Dario Parente, who are now in the Operation: Mindcrime live band with Tate. "I have been spending more and more time in Italy over the last few years and the people and culture have captured my heart. I truly enjoyed working with my Italian counterparts to create this classic metal album," says Tate. Musically, this album showcases the great songwriting and performing talents of Tate, Lonobile and his cast of musicians and also marks a very welcomed return for Tate to a style that he made famous along with his former band. Fans of Tate’s work in Queensryche’s early days and of the previous Sweet Oblivion record will not want to miss this! The success of the 1993 Screaming Trees album Sweet Oblivion and the single "Nearly Lost You" may have put Mark Lanegan on the mainstream map, but as a solo singer/songwriter, Lanegan was already successfully forging a different path with 1990's The Winding Sheet. By the time 1994's Whiskey For The Holy Ghost was released after a protracted recording period, the split between the streamlined grunge of the Trees and Lanegan's forays into folk and blues were fully on display. With only one track, the escalating "Boracho," featuring prominent electric guitar and distortion, the album finds more similarities with fellow Seattle folksters The Walkabouts (with whom Lanegan appeared as a guest) than most of his Seattle contemporaries. The result is Lanegan's voice, sought after as a collaborator for decades to come, fully out front, which serves him well while exposing some of the cracks in the instrumental performances and production.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - House A Home 13:11 - The River Rise 17:47 - Boracho 31:18 - Sunrise 36:58 - Ride The Nightingale Outro - Judas Touch   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Coming in at number 17 on Rolling Stones Greatest Grunge Albums list is the 1992 album from Screaming Trees, Sweet Oblivion. Joining Bakko for this episode is co-host of the Shout It Out Loudcast Tom Gigliotti. Tom and Bakko take a deep dive on this standout album from a Seattle Grunge band that is often overlooked. The Screaming Trees one-upped their major-label debut, Uncle Anesthesia, with this solid, vastly underrated effort. Sweet Oblivion's lead single, the jumpy hard rocker "Nearly Lost You," proved itself a highlight on the hugely successful, Seattle-themed Singles soundtrack. But even though the Screaming Trees stacked up quite well against their more famous peers in that particular showcase, the exposure didn't make them stars. Perhaps it was because Sweet Oblivion had been released several months before Singles, and the band thus couldn't build a sense of anticipation for a new album release, the way Alice in Chains and Smashing Pumpkins did for Dirt and Siamese Dream, respectively; nor could they capitalize on the extra publicity that goes along with new releases. For whatever reason, Singles didn't push sales of Sweet Oblivion, as the latter only scraped the lower reaches of the Billboard charts. And that's a shame, because the record is quite good -- the best songs here are easily among the best in their catalog, and the songwriting was their most consistent yet. "Nearly Lost You" is a standout, of course, but "Dollar Bill," "Shadow of the Season," and "Butterfly" are nearly as impressive. Mark Lanegan's raspy voice conveys a weary wistfulness that adds an unexpected dimension to the group's otherwise macho garage-psych grunge. The Trees no longer sound all that punkish, trading in some of their early, noisy fury for a more '70s-indebted hard rock sound, but it's done with a graceful power that proves they were at least the equal of their more famous fellow scenesters. Unfortunately, the four-year hiatus between Sweet Oblivion and its follow-up, Dust, ensured that the band would be forever relegated to cult status. - All Music

Welcome to episode 91s of Love that Album. While Maurice continues on his walkabout/vision quest, Eric Reanimator (of LTA: The Compilation Series) continues leading the show. For this episode, he is joined by creator of the Feed My Ears music discussion Facebook group, John Ross to talk about two classics of the grunge era..   They start the show by discussing the Screaming Trees' “Sweet Oblivion” album from 1992. Featuring Mark Lanegan on vocals, the Screaming Trees were largely overlooked in their day despite being around at the right place and right time, securing a major label contract, and being an integral part of the Seattle scene.   Following the discussion of the Screaming Trees and a couple of digressions, they proceed to talk about the 1995 album “Above” by Mad Season.  A one album super-group project featuring members of Alice in Chains, The Screaming Trees, and Pearl Jam, Mad Season was recorded as an artistic response to the substance abuse issues in the Seattle scene.   While the album did well and contained a couple of well-known songs, the deaths of 2 of the bands members effectively ended the band. Eric and John discuss all of this and more.   You can download the show by searching for Love That Album in the iTunes store or downloading streaming directly from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com   Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum   If you want to carry on more great music discussion join Feed My Ears athttps://www.facebook.com/groups/feedmyears    If you enjoy what you the podcast, please recommend us to a friend or ten....real life, social media, the guy at work who says he likes music....
