The Mindset Experience
Becca Mann On Swimming Outside The Lanes to Create Life Defining Experiences

The Mindset Experience

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 19, 2025 42:28

Becca Mann is a writer and athlete. A member of the USA Swimming National Team from 2012 until 2021, Becca is a 2x USA National Champion and was the youngest person ever to place in the Top 10 in 4 events at a single Olympic Trials. She has also represented Team USA at 4 World Championships. Becca initially fell in love with the solitude, power and efficiency that swimming offered but was ultimately motivated by the ability to consistently achieve goals. Whether moving to a more advanced lane, breaking a school record, breaking a state record or becoming a world champion, each small goal led to an even bigger one. No matter how big the goal was, her mindset stayed the same. She maintained the same pre-race routine (as it had worked before) and reminded herself that every meet was the most important meet of her life. After missing her 3rd Olympic team, she decided that if she was going to walk away, she would need to do something that had never been done before. With clear understanding and mastery of her mental strengths and vulnerabilities including OCD, she became the first person to have consecutively swum the triangle between the Hawaiian islands of Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. This life defining experience allowed her to redefine her relationship with swimming and reminded herself that it is supposed to be fun. Becca Mann shares her struggles, insights and knowledge in her latest book, “Outside the Lanes.” @becca__mann

My guest today is Jennifer Sey, an American author, filmmaker, business executive and a retired artistic gymnast, who was the 1986 USA National Champion. Jennifer began working at Levi's in 1999, rising to Chief Marketing Officer and then Global Brand President.  She was fired from Levi's last year after speaking out against the lockdowns and specifically the harms caused to children in San Francisco; Public schools were closed for 19 months during Covid in San Francisco for 50,000+ children: the longest closure in the world, while (privileged) private schools opened up in 2020. Most of the affected children are underprivileged, and for them Jennifer fought while exposing the hypocrisy of the "Liberal Democrats" who pretend to advocate for equality & equity, and exposing the woke culture, both of Levis and the public. Jennifer refused an exit grant of 1 million dollars (!!!) in exchange for her silence, because her story and her mission are more important than money. Her recent book, “Levi's Unbuttoned,” tells the inspirational story of her corporate career, search for authenticity, and ultimate refusal to bow to the woke mob. We talked about: Career path at Levis, their response to Jennifer's views Levis' $1m offer to self-censor California's Covid restrictions, public schools closures Democrats hypocrisy in the US Free speech, media manipulation Labeling & damaging one's reputation  “Viewpoint discrimination” Twitter's new CEO “Woke washing”: Diversity & Inclusion, ESG  Predictions for the US Corporate America workforce Bud Light & Target failed marketing campaigns I hope you enjoy the show; please share it forward, leave a review and make sure your voice is heard! Welcome back to more than running with Dana. I'm your host Dana Giordano, and on this show, I talk to the women in and around the running community who inspire me daily. I started this podcast when I was running professionally and I felt like the deeper stories of women were not being amplified. Stay for real conversations about confidence, mental health, body image, motivation, and of course, running. This episode of More Than Running is supported by New Balance. This is a mini-series featuring New Balance's Stolen Starts ambassadors and Team New Balance athletes. This episode was recorded back in December but was postponed due to personal events for our guests. I have often felt like the ends of our running community have felt so separate and what better way to celebrate women in running by round table conversations with the women making change within their communities and reaching new heights on the professional track circuit. On the community end of the spectrum are the women of The Stolen Starts, a women's running collective started in 2021. 10 ambassadors make up The Stolen Starts and include women from London, South Korea, Berlin, LA, Paris, and more. Each woman in the collective was selected because they are each powerful advocates for specific causes in their respective communities. In this episode, we meet Elodie Watrin a talented musician from Paris who uses her platform to promote sustainable practices. On the other end of the running spectrum and the world, we met Emma Coburn, Olympic Bronze medalist and 10x USA National Champion in the Steeplechase. Emma Coburn is also highly passionate about sustainability and shares her outlook on how to be connected to her own environment. Over the next 45 minutes, you will hear an incredible conversation about sustainability, running, community, and more. It's like going on a run with your favorite people. Elodie and Emma are both more than running, and I hope you enjoy this series! MTR is a CITIUS Mag podcast and is edited by Mike Zurolo.

“Keeping that elite level mindset keeps me elite as a person.” -Curtis Mitchell We're all in this world to be the best version of ourselves. But it's a long and bewildering journey. It's hard to know where to start, let alone how to succeed.  But, we can learn a very valuable lesson from athletes. Elite athletes all have one thing in common: an elite mindset. The way elite athletes thinks about themselves and their goal helps them achieve greatness at whatever they do. They're the ones who seem to have it all—the drive, the mental toughness, and the will to win that is so strong it's almost inhuman. We don't need to be an athlete to develop this mindset. We just need to develop our own unique set of beliefs to help us improve ourselves and reach our goals as well! In this episode, Daniel sits with the 2014 USA National Champion, “Mr. 200”, Curtis Mitchell. Unlike other athletes, Curtis didn't have a scholarship so had to practice harder than the others to prove himself. And finally all the hard work and discipline he put in paid off as he bagged medals after medals in his running career.  Listen in as Daniel and Curtis discuss what having an elite mindset means and how to develop it.
