Josiah Citrin is a culinary expert and veteran of Los Angeles's gourmet dining scene, with more than 37 years of experience. He is chef and owner of Santa Monica, California's Mélisse Restaurant.
My experience has taught me that if I want to achieve excellence in something, I should study and learn from the people who have achieved success in that area already. Why should I reinvent the wheel? So, when Cameron-Brooks Alumnus Liam Burns messaged me on LinkedIn that he wanted to be a guest on the podcast and share how he managed his 30+ year career, I jumped at the chance to interview him. Liam is a former Navy Surface Warfare Officer who transitioned to a business career in 1991. He spent the first fifteen years of his career in various sales and marketing leadership positions with Johnson & Johnson. He used that experience to start consulting, executive coaching practices, and C-suite leadership positions with start-up medical companies for the last fifteen years. In the podcast, Liam explains that the key to a successful career is building a strong foundation in the first ten years. With that foundation, one will have many options in the future. These options include living in an ideal location like Liam does now in Denver, choosing to continue as an executive leader in a larger company, pivoting to start-ups, or even striking out on your own and starting your own company. Liam has done all three! I asked Liam, "What's the key to establishing that foundation?" Liam referenced the book The 5 Patterns of Extraordinary Careers: The Guide for Achieving Success and Satisfaction by James M. Citrin and Richard Smith. Citrin is the CEO of Spencer Stuart North America, an Executive Search firm and Cameron-Brooks client. As or the 3 keys to an extraordinary post-military career, Liam specifically references Pattern 5: Find the Right Fit. The key to establishing the foundation is choosing positions and companies based on your ability to leverage your strengths, do work that interests you, and work with people you like and respect. I strongly encourage anyone considering a change or launching a career to evaluate their choice based on those three factors. Make those a priority. Unfortunately, there is a lot of other noise out there that clouds decisions. Sometimes, people want a great career but prioritize the path because it is the path of least resistance; it's easy. The authors do not say this is easy, in fact they say it take work and preparation. Other times, people decide to pursue a career because of the pay or the location. The authors specifically advise against prioritizing extrinsic factors. In fact, they say that when one prioritizes strengths, interests, and fit, those other factors will follow! Just like they did for Liam. If you listen to this podcast and want more than these 3 keys to an extraordinary post-military career, we are here to help. Cameron-Brooks has a 50-year track record of guiding military officers to create a step-by-step plan to learn about their options, connect their military experiences directly to opportunities in corporate America, craft a resume that will stand out to hiring managers, and ultimately launch a successful business career. Don't wait. Give me a call at (210) 874-1502 or email me at jjunker@cameron-brooks.com - we can have a conversation about your plans and goals and if Cameron-Brooks is the right guide to help you get there. Joel

Soul Searching Episode 128: Rabbi Paul Citrin on A Modern Reading of Biblical Isaac by Temple Beth Shalom
Today on The Grail I sit down with Josiah Citrin and talk all things food including the pressures of being a 2 Star Michelin Chef. Josiah is one of the most incredible Chefs in the industry and also a very cool Human. Josiah is a two-star Michelin chef and owner of Santa Monica's highly-acclaimed Mélisse, Charcoal Venice,Charcoal Sunset and Dave's Doghouse at the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles and Indian Wells Tennis Garden. His culinary philosophy, “In Pursuit of Excellence” sets the standard for all of his concepts, whether fine-dining or casual. Citrin discovered his passion for food through his family at an early age, growing up in Santa Monica and Venice with a mother who was a caterer, and a French grandmother who cooked family meals. Their knowledge, combined with his excitement for cooking and business, led him to pursue a culinary career. Citrin moved to Paris to explore his French heritage after graduating from Santa Monica High School, and worked for three years at fine Parisian restaurants Vivarois and La Poste, gaining an understanding of and respect for the rules of traditional French cooking. This invaluable experience taught him both the art and discipline of cooking and fine dining, and formed the definitive basis of his training. He returned to the United States in 1990 and began applying his skills at Los Angeles' finest restaurants—notably Wolfgang Puck's celebrated Chinois on Main and then at Granita. After two years, Josiah moved on to join Patina and Pinot Bistro and cooked alongside famed chef and savvy restaurateur Joachim Splichal. Citrin subsequently became chef at Capri restaurant in Venice and Jackson's in West Hollywood. With a heightened interest in French gastronomy and a spirit for entrepreneurship, Citrin launched JiRaffe in 1996 alongside childhood friend and fellow chef Raphael Lunetta. Selling his interest to JiRaffe to Lunetta in 1999, Citrin pursued his lifelong dream of opening his own fine dining establishment by debuting Mélisse which opened to critical acclaim and has been impressing the culinary world ever since. HONORS Citrin's honors include: Two Stars from Michelin Guide (2007, 2008, 2021), #1 for Top Food in Los Angeles and #1 American-French Restaurant for Food in Los Angeles by Zagat (2013, 2014), “Best Wine List” by LA Weekly (2015), “Top 100 Restaurants in the World” by Elite Traveler (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), Five Stars by Forbes Travel Guide (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018), “Top Ten New Chefs” by Food & Wine magazine (1997), and “Best Chefs of the Year” by Los Angeles magazine (2012).

Für mich macht es so einen großen Unterschied, wie ich morgens in den Tag starte - ob ich mir erst mal Zeit nehme für mich, was als Mama von zwei Zwergen nicht immer leicht und möglich ist, oder mich gleich von all den To Do's überwältigen lasse.
Friends for over 35 years and married for 23 of them! They live life on a mission to meet people wherever they are and think every person should have someone who believes in them. Whether clients work with Kristine inside of the workplace or work with Kris on life issues, their mission stays the same: Restoring God's design for work and relationships. Together they have grown up, gotten knocked down a few times, and have never quit picking each other back up. Still reading? Here's some work history:KRISTINEAfter the first 10 years of her career learning how to build systems and processes from some of the best minds at Toyota, Kristine spent the next 14 years developing and continuously growing the internal systems, processes, and teams inside a CPA firm. During that time, she launched a business consulting company to help support the many business clients of the firm. In 2020, the time came to take the consulting arm to a new level and Accompany Suite was founded. She knew that statistically, soft skills make up 85-90% of overall career success (Neff & Citron, 2001; Ruff, 2016). So, she and her team set out to train, coach, and mentor other businesses to grow in these skill sets, in addition to offering fractional COO services designed to increase production and engagement, while decreasing turnover. She and her team help get everyone moving in the same direction! KRISSince the age of 8, Kris has been working. Raised to help in the family business when he wasn't in school, he has learned the value of a hard-earned dollar and the need to believe anything's possible. He has gained a wide perspective when it comes to parenting. He's been the dad who worked long hours and hardly saw his wife and kids, and also a stay-at-home dad who homeschooled, too! This unique experience has made it possible for him to help men and women better connect with the root issues that so many marriages and parents face. Kris is drawn to working with people who are stuck. He may not have met you yet, but he already believes in you. Every person has the ability to push past the lies they tell themselves and achieve the things they desire. Through hard work, dedication, and encouragement he works to guide others through whatever is standing in their way. ReferencesNeff, T. J., & Citrin, J. M. (2001). Lesson from the top. Barry Massarsky is a partner and co-practice leader - music economics andvaluation services at Citrin Cooperman, and was the founder of Massarksy Consulting, which he sold to Citrin Cooperman early in 2022. He is credited with pioneering the economics of royalty cash flows in the early 1990s. And together with his business partner Nari Matsuura developed a model to guide banks lending to music investors. Last year Massarksy Consulting valued over 400 catalogs totaling more than $9 billion. We start with Barry's path into this somewhat esoteric area of finance, his experience studying at Cornell and how he first developed an interest in valuing music cash flows. The rather unusual place for this to start was an internship on Capitol Hill and an anti-trust case. Since then, his career has had ups and downs and we talk about one such "down" which required him to start again, and how he used his network to do so. We dive in then to the dynamics of the music industry today, the impact of streaming and the innovation that essentially saved the industry from cannibalization. We speak about recent music deals, such as the valuation of prominent music catalogs and the different dynamics that is driving demand today - such as the abundant production of content. We end with paying homage to some of the extraordinary artists and leaders that Barry has worked with and distill some of their wisdom into some takeaways from the podcast.

Children Services is tasked with protecting the safety, well-being, and permanency of children and families, but some experts say it has not escaped its origins as a system that separates. Alexandra Citrin, senior associate at the Center for the Study of Social Policy, explained there is a long-standing belief foster care is the best and only intervention for families struggling with abuse or neglect, and she said separation particularly impacts families of color. "At the beginning, the system didn't even serve children of color because they weren't deemed worthy," Citrin explained. "We then see the children services system separating Native children from their families and their culture to try and force assimilation, and separating Black children at a very high rate." Citrin pointed out oppression and racism within children services are connected to systemic policies excluding families of color and do not create the social support families need. The disparities are evident in other public systems rooted in racism, including juvenile justice. Currently, Black children represent 36% of the children in foster care in Ohio, while they represent 14% of children in the general population. Black and mixed-race children also experience more placements in the foster system than their white peers. Research has found racial bias among people who report children to Children Services and among the caseworkers who assess a family's situation. Robin Reese, executive director of Lucas County Children Services, said her staff is laser-focused on protecting children from abuse and neglect. When the focus is affected by poverty and the overwhelming number of cases workers are managing, she said it can unintentionally lead to racial disparities. "We have some of the best people in this field, but the truth is, all of us come in with biases," Reese observed. "It impacts the way we do the work. And so, if you're a person of color, and you're poor, the risk of you having involvement in child protection is raised." And Citrin noted the way child protection is funded also contributed to the history of separation. She emphasized prior to the passage of the Family First Prevention Services Act, federal funding streams including services to help keep children with their families were inadequate. "Title IV-E up until very recently could only be used for foster care placements," Citrin stressed. "You didn't have the federal funding stream for child welfare services to serve families where children were able to remain home and in their community." --- Thanks for listening to the podcast. It wasn't planned, and over the past 18 months, many of us became remote leaders and workers. Darleen DeRosa and Jim Citrin are the authors of Leading at a Distance: Practical Lessons for Virtual Success. They sit down with Kevin to discuss leadership skills that have become more important as we work remotely. They asked leaders what their biggest challenge was in this environment and the majority said it is inspiring and motivating their teams. Purpose and authenticity have been increasingly important leadership capabilities over time, but they are now more central and expected than ever. We need to be more deliberate and thoughtful with our teams and find opportunities to build trust through a screen. In this episode, Darleen and Jim share: How leaders can build trust. Things to think about when hiring virtually. Challenges for hybrid workers and hybrid teams. Prayer can influence our state of mind which then has an effect on our state of body. It's a portal that connects us with Divine Source and is an intensely personal journey inward as well as an act of conversation with the Presence of the Infinite or what some call God. It can help us to move from a primarily secular, materialistic life into a more spiritual one. Rabbi Paul J. Citrin has served various congregations as a rabbi for over 40 years. Richard Citrin, Ph.D., MBA brings more than 25 years of business leadership and consulting experience to his clients and their organizations, focusing on using a practical and pragmatic approach to his work. His unique perspective on leadership development, talent management and resilience is based on the idea that by using strengths, assets, and skills, and by aligning them in a purposeful and powerful manner, real change occurs. Early in his career, Richard worked on Wall Street where he loved the excitement and pace of the financial world, but he also saw how the impact of poor leadership, underutilization of employee capabilities and management overconfidence led to destructive workplaces. His observations helped him decide to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology. Following his academic work, Richard began his business career. He built a successful healthcare business in the Dallas/ Fort Worth Metroplex in the 1990’s that he successfully sold to a national healthcare company. Richard oversaw multiple aspects of this acquisition and merger and helped the company develop new product lines that led to a tripling of valuation and their eventual purchase by one of the nation’s largest healthcare companies. The platforms of both major political parties are based on the belief that the actions of presidents have a direct impact on the U.S. and global economy. But is that really so? Of all the issues to be discussed during presidential campaigns, none dominates the debate more than the economy. Presidents and would-be presidents insist that they have the power to create jobs, drive growth and spur investment on both Wall Street and Main Street. On this episode, we hear a contrary view. Our guest is financial adviser and author Jonathan Citrin, who makes the argument that we wildly over-inflate the ability of the president to influence the economy. He speaks of ''the myth of the economic commander-in-chief.'' Listen to a lively debate about whether there's really any correlation or causation between presidential actions and economic performance. And find out why Citrin believes that ''things are more out of control than we think.''
We speak with Jim Citrin, who leads the CEO Search and Succession Practice at Spencer Stuart and is a bestselling writer of a number of books on leadership and career development. "You don’t want to make mistakes, but we all know you’re going to make mistakes. And as painful as they are to make and experience at the time, you genuinely can only learn from making some sidesteps.”
In the 8th podcast, we meet Wayne Citrin from JNBridge who innovates in Java and .Net interoperability area and shares his entrepreneurial advice.
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 2, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rabbi Micah Citrin, Guest Minister. SERMON DESCRIPTION Love is a universal principle understood in different ways by distinct cultures and religions. In Judaism, love is a core value for how we relate to God and other people. Jewish tradition associates love with distinct actions that stem from one’s sense of self and the dignity of the other. A deeper understanding of love from this perspective can help us to bring Shalom, peace, and balance to our world.
