In late June 1973, former White House counsel John Dean delivered startling testimony before the congressional committee investigating Watergate: Richard Nixon had an enemies list. The point, as Dean had written in a 1971 memo, was to "use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies." The exposure of Nixon's dirty tricks led to his downfall. In 2024, Donald Trump openly campaigned to exact revenge on his enemies. Rather than alienating Republican voters, Trump's call for retribution rallied them. In this episode, historian Ken Hughes compares and contrasts the differences between then and now. fWotD Episode 2787: Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Saturday, 21 December 2024 is Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang.Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang: The Magical Car is a children's story written by Ian Fleming and illustrated by John Burningham. It was initially published in three volumes, the first of which was released on 22 October 1964 by Jonathan Cape, before being published as one book. The story concerns the exploits of Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang—a car with hidden powers and abilities—and its owners, the Pott family.Fleming, better known as the creator of James Bond, took his inspiration for the subject from a series of aero-engined racing cars called "Chitty Bang Bang", built by Louis Zborowski in the early 1920s. Fleming wrote the book while convalescing after having had a major heart attack; he had created the story as a bedtime story for his son, Caspar. Although Fleming wanted The Daily Mail cartoonist Trog—the pseudonym of Wally Fawkes—as the book's illustrator, the newspaper did not allow him to work on the project, so Burningham was commissioned. Fleming did not live to see Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang published; he died of a heart attack on 11 August 1964 and the book was published two months later.Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang was serialised in the Daily Express and adapted as a comic strip. The book was loosely adapted as a 1968 film of the same name with a screenplay by Roald Dahl and Ken Hughes; a subsequent novelisation was also published. The film was produced by Albert R. Broccoli, the co-producer of the James Bond film series. The story was also adapted as a stage musical under the same name. In April 2011 a BBC Radio 4 Extra adaptation was broadcast with Imogen Stubbs as the voice of Chitty. Three sequels to Fleming's book have been published, all written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:51 UTC on Saturday, 21 December 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Amy.

Welcome to Reel Britannia-a very British podcast about very British movies ...with just a hint of professionalism.    Back to the seedy side of sixties Soho this week featuring a powerful performance from Anthony Newley This week, Scott and Steven are joined by Anthony, the host of the Film Gold podcast    The Small World of Sammy Lee (1963) The Small World of Sammy Lee is a 1963 British crime drama film directed by Ken Hughes. The story unfolds in the seedy underbelly of London's Soho district, focusing on the life of Sammy Lee, a strip club compere and hustler who finds himself in dire straits. Sammy Lee, played by Anthony Newley, is a charismatic but desperate man. He owes £300 to a local bookie named Connor and has only five hours to pay off his debt. If he fails, the consequences will be severe, as Connor's enforcers are known for their ruthless methods. The film begins with Sammy receiving a phone call informing him that his time is running out, setting off a frantic race against the clock. As Sammy scrambles to gather the money, the film provides a vivid portrayal of his world. Soho is depicted as a place filled with strip clubs, gambling dens, and shady characters. Sammy's interactions with the various inhabitants of this world reveal much about his character and the precarious life he leads. Throughout the day, Sammy employs a series of hustles to raise the funds. He borrows from friends, pleads with acquaintances, and even resorts to stealing. One of the significant characters he turns to is his brother Lou, who runs a delicatessen. Lou, portrayed by Warren Mitchell, is initially reluctant to help due to Sammy's repeated failures and irresponsible behavior. However, the bond of family eventually prevails, and Lou reluctantly provides some money, though it's not enough to cover the debt. Parallel to Sammy's frantic efforts, the film explores the impact of his lifestyle on others, particularly Patsy, a young woman who is infatuated with him. Patsy, played by Julia Foster, arrives in Soho from the countryside, naively hoping to start a new life with Sammy. Her innocence and genuine affection for Sammy contrast sharply with the gritty reality of his world. Sammy, though fond of her, is too entangled in his own troubles to reciprocate her feelings fully. As the deadline approaches, Sammy's situation becomes increasingly desperate. His attempts to hustle money from various sources lead to a series of tense and dramatic encounters. The film's climax occurs in the strip club where Sammy works. In a last-ditch effort, Sammy bets the money he has managed to gather on a high-stakes poker game, hoping to win enough to pay off his debt. However, luck is not on his side, and he loses the game, sealing his fate. The final scenes of the film are poignant and impactful. As the clock ticks down, Connor's enforcers arrive to collect the debt. Sammy's frantic energy gives way to a sense of resignation and defeat. The enforcers take Sammy away, leaving his fate ambiguous but undoubtedly grim. The Small World of Sammy Lee is a compelling character study and a vivid depiction of the darker side of 1960s London. The film's strength lies in its atmosphere, the complexity of its protagonist, and the tense, fast-paced narrative that keeps the audience engaged from start to finish. Through Sammy Lee's story, the film explores themes of desperation, survival, and the human cost of a life lived on the margins of society. "Soho's not a place, it's a state of mind. It's where you end up when you've got nowhere else to go." The last time an incumbent president withdrew from a reelection campaign was 1968. On March 31, under immense stress from the failure of his Vietnam War policy, President Lyndon Johnson told a national TV audience that he would neither seek nor accept the nomination of the Democratic Party for another four years in the White House. Vice President Hubert Humphrey would win the nomination, as all hell broke loose on the Chicago streets outside the convention, during one of the most turbulent years in U.S. political history. By late October, as Humphrey gained ground in the polls against Republican Richard Nixon, LBJ learned that a woman by the name of Anna Chennault was interfering in his 11th hour bid to initiate peace talks with the North Vietnamese government in Paris. The person who orchestrated this dirty trick was Nixon himself. In this episode, University of Virginia historian and researcher Ken Hughes tells the story of the Chennault Affair. Have you ever wondered why somebody gets a Harley-Davidson tattoo? Well on this week's episode of Tech People, I talk with Ken Hughes a CX strategist and consumer behavior analyst whose work focuses on these kinds of questions and the importance of understanding life through the lens of the consumer. We look at how CX needs to move away from a transactional view and towards creating an emotional connection with customers. Digital technology has pushed society into a more immersive space, which has led to transactions becoming commodities instead of experiences. AI and chatbots can assist with customer service, but the depth of connection is missing. Ken Hughes feels that companies should strive to deepen their connection with customers by instilling values in employees that emphasize making a difference and bringing back the human aspect and increasing channels and touchpoints by outsourcing customer service and finding good partners who are invested in the technology and the future. Whether it's using humor to diffuse difficult situations or an employee going above and beyond to “save” a small child's goldfish, authenticity is essential to consumers. Ken Hughes is also a motivational speaker and will be back on tour in 2023, traveling the world and enjoying interactions with live audiences, so be on the lookout for his appearances. *** This episode was divided into two episodes, the second will post tomorrow morningIn our second episode of RICHARD NIXON and WATERGATE: 1973 Enemies at the Gate , rather than dive right into our storyline we decided to take an in-depth two-part look at those enemies at the gate, or at least the important ally the Democratic Party could count on in their campaign to undermine President Nixon, THE PRESS, or more specifically The Washington Post.  In this episode, we will look closely at the cozy relationship between Katherine Graham and former President Lyndon Johnson, Sally Quin and Ben Bradlee and the relationship they had to the Kennedy family. The ties between Kennedy and Johnson aid Joe Califano and his client The Washington Post, and on and on. It will definitely leave you with a sickening feeling about the motivations the paper had to go after the man in the White House who had just won a 49 state landslide and gotten our troops and POW's home from a long protracted war in Southeast Asia. But , just in case you think we here at "Bridging the Political Gap" are to swayed by our obvious editorially positive opinion of President Nixon, we will be taking a trip back in time to one of the most sickening displays of liberal journalistic arrogance ever recorded and saved for posterity, (and saved by the very rag-sheet whose journalistic integrity is being called into question, The Washington Post, no less.)  They actually hosted a 40th anniversary celebratory event with Elizabeth Drew, Bob Woodward, Carl Bernstein, Ken Hughes, and Ruth Marcus and when they are done you will be filled with absolute disgust. It is all here for you to listen too, the mocking of the President, the totally inaccurate claims, the the obvious disdain, and from Ruth Marcus one of the most outrageously laughable claims ever made about comparing the tapes of Richard Nixon to the apparently saintly Lyndon B. Johnson.  It will make you sick.BUT we do invite you to our second part of this analysis of the press,  when we look at more of the journalists of the Watergate era, some awful, but not all. The press is after all not a monolithic entity and there are good folks in the media and in the next episode we will introduce you to some of them as well, in part two of "The Press is the Enemy"

As part of our series on the 1968 election , we are going to take 4 episodes and create a sub series to examine thoroughly the accusation of treason that has been promulgated for years against then Vice President Richard Nixon. It is a subject that has divided the public and historians for decades. Richard Nixon always denied it. Anna Chennault never talked about it until every one else was dead and gone. The Nixon haters, which made up a huge number of the liberal press and left wing elite, naturally embraced the story. But more serious academic historians have always asked a very serious question that has always called into question the validity of the story. Why would a nation like South Vietnam, who had access to televisions and newspapers, need anyone to tell them that Richard Nixon, a career anti communist, would be a better deal than Hubert Humphrey, a man who had already announced he intended to pull out of the war and leave South Vietnam to fight the Communist aggressors alone. It sort of defies common sense. But when it comes to Richard Nixon most people are willing to believe anything anyone says about him. Here we will listen to both popular historians, and serious historians, as they discuss the issue and the facts and we will also hear from some of the players themselves who were actually there, campaigning at the side of Richard Nixon throughout 1968. The folks we will hear from include Patrick Buchanan and Henry Kissinger and a quote from Tom Houston, plus historians, Neil Ferguson, Ken Burns, Luke Nichtor, Michael Beschloss, Ken Hughes, John Prados  and James A. Farrell from various documentary an interview footage .  In the end, it is a much weaker case than a number of these folks will portray it.

The time has come to take a deep dive. The Dade Battle, also known as the Dade Massacre, arguably served as the opening shots to the Second Seminole War. Other shots were being fired throughout Florida in that December as well as in the months leading up to this engagement. But this was the Big Battle that seized everyone’s attention and that informed the U.S. Government that the Seminole would not go quietly into Oklahoma exile. With us today to set the scene and describe the Dade Battle is Ross Lamoreaux. Ross is a military re-enactor, a museum exhibitor at the Tampa Bay History Center, the newly elected president of the Dade Battlefield Society, and someone who has actually walked the path of Dade’s march from Tampa toward turmoil in present-day Bushnell.Post return Dec. 28, 1835, list of casualties from "Engagement on the Withlacoochee" Host Patrick Swan is a board member with the Seminole Wars Foundation. Strap in, because we’ve got a lot of ground to cover this month. Gabe and special guest Patrick Ripoll from Tracks of the Damned are looking into the peak year in slasher movie history: 1981. Originally assuming that this would shrink the number of movies to about 20, they learned that there were, in fact, 42 movies that people on the internet consider slashers released in the year 1981 – and they were foolish enough to think that was still a small enough number to discuss every single one of them in under two hours. “Perhaps this will be a two-parter,” Gabe wonders aloud at the top of the podcast. No. Absolutely not. This is now a three-parter. So, enjoy the first of three sweaty, panicked trips through slasher country, including (ahem): Scream (directed by Byron Quisenberry; aka: Butcher, Baker, Candlestick Maker and The Outing), Ghostkeeper (directed by Jim Makichuk) Corpse Mania (directed by Kuei Chih-Hung), Home Sweet Home (directed by Nettie Peña; aka: Bloodparty and Slasher in the House), A Day of Judgement (directed by Christopher Reynolds), Srigala (directed by Sisworo Gautama Putra; aka: Wolf), Night School (directed by Ken Hughes; aka: Terror Eyes), The House Where Death Lives (directed by Alan Beattie; aka: Delusion), My Bloody Valentine (directed by George Mihalka), Eyes of a Stranger (directed by Ken Wiederhorn), Murder Obsession (directed by Ricardo Freda; aka: Murder Syndrome), Madhouse (directed by Ovidio G.
