In this episode, we speak with Ian-Michael Hébert, one of the founders of Holos, a private retreat center and community specializing in holistic living and transformational experiences.    In our conversation, he discusses the genesis of Holos, their vision for a sustainable and resilient community, and the importance of focusing on reciprocity and honoring the indigenous people of the land. Ian-Michael also emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural beauty of the Diamante Valley and their commitment to stewardship.    Among other details of the community's infrastructure, he describes their design for conserving a quarter of the property while reforesting most of the already denatured zones. They also have plans for a macaw reintroduction initiative.   Ian-Michael reflects on challenges they've faced in getting set up with elements such as water management, communication breakdowns with the municipality, and bridging the gap between foreigners and locals.    As we discuss the importance of supporting the local community, paying fair wages, and engaging with local service providers, Ian-Michael affirms Holos's goal to continue reassessing their programming to focus more on community relations and neighborhood development.     Other topics we touched on include developing a clear vision, team building, project financing, and embracing the wisdom of not knowing.   I appreciate the degree to which Holos works to cultivate reciprocity with surrounding humans and the natural world. As important as it is, it can be challenging to keep such delicate subtleties at the forefront while in the development phase and when juggling the needs of investors and push-back from the municipality, but it's the path worth walking.   Setting space aside to develop housing and other infrastructure for the Costa Rican and indigenous Boruca people, who compile much of their labor force, is a significant investment. I've been happy to see this practice implemented among some of the other ecovillage projects I've been investigating, as well. It's a valuable step in honoring the needs of their workforce while holding space for the local culture and providing stability for the project.    Another element I've found attractive among the ecovillages I've been looking into is the effort to lay out a portion of the community infrastructure kept open for the use of the regional community, which is also represented in Holos's design.    Something that echoed strongly for me in this interview is that it can be difficult to handle people's projections when operating a project of this size. Gossip can be plentiful, and the most altruistically intending projects are often the easiest targets for it by those who are doing less, feeling like a project of that size should be able to do it all. I'm glad that Ian-Miachael plans to hold more events to bring the local community in to see more of what's happening there.   Another detail that stuck out for me was Ian-Michael's share of finding the right team. This topic often comes up with other landowners and entrepreneurs I work with. When looking for your team, it's essential to identify your strengths, clearly describe your needs, make a humble ask out to your community, and have patience as it comes together.   Before letting you go, I'd like to address a housekeeping detail regarding working with a team. About 2/3rds into the interview, there's a moment where I described my efforts to help with a road repair fundraiser a couple of years ago. Relistening to it, I recognize I used a lot of “I” languaging.    I feel it important to clarify that I wasn't the only member of the Diamante Bridge Collective who went to the Association meeting to learn about the pueblo's needs, nor was I the only person behind the fundraiser. I might have been the one who initiated it, but raising that much money was a multicultural community effort and a testament to the power of cooperation.   I hope your life unfolds in a continuous stream of miracles. In today's episode, we hear from Sarah Wu, a highly respected permaculturist & herbalist living and teaching in Costa Rica. I sat down with Sarah at the Envision Festival earlier this year to learn about some of the regenerative initiatives the festival has implemented as part of its mission.    Envision is a multi-day music festival with several stages and thousands of participants. By day, the focus is characterized by consciousness-raising workshops and presentations on permaculture, community-building, yoga, wellness, the embodiment of the divine masculine and feminine, and honor of indigenous ways. All this is presented with an overall theme of mindfulness and play.    By night, the arena becomes flooded by a secondary population of party-goers enjoying the many talented DJs and musicians playing on Envision's many stages. You can find everything from electronic music to jam bands and local folk artists to ecstatic dance on the padded yoga stage. The experience can be overwhelming for some, and advice should be heeded to pace yourself, hydrate, and wash your hands frequently.   The festival brings with it a significant impact on the local town of Uvita, both in the ways of a boosted economy as well as occasional exhausts of some of its more limited resources. Like with all things in life, there exists a dichotomy that the festival producers have worked to bring balance to over the years.    In our interview, beyond sharing details about the thousands of trees they've planted onsite, their extensive composting system, the no-single-use-dishware policy, and the education programs that Sarah has initiated through the Village Witches program, we touch on the reasons why Envision isn't using compost toilets anymore and what a future solution might look like.   One of my favorite parts of the interview is when we reflect on valuing each of our different niches in humanity's ecosystem.    Festivals of this size are here to stay, and they can prove to be a life-changing experience for many people. At the same time, many festivals can get a bad rap for the negative impact of so many people converging on an area for a short time. While the convergence has a temporary impact on the wildlife, for instance, it is worth recognizing that the food forest of this festival site was previously nothing more than a cattle pasture.    Their internally organized dishwashing system diverts hundreds of thousands of plastic waste products from the landfill each year. The Village Witches program has cultivated a culture of well-being amidst a party scene, bringing herbalism to the mainstream.    The festival has also done a lot to bring hundreds of jobs to the local economy before, during, and after the event. They've also done a lot of work over the years to harmonize the ecosystem of the festival production, staff, artists, attendees, volunteers, and other influences.   In the interview, we didn't cover what Envision's non-profit foundation Somos el Cambio continues to do for the neighboring region.    With the leadership of Federico Gutierez, Somos el Cambio Has planted over 17,000 trees directly by Envision staff and volunteers, And over 80,000 more trees with Envision's support. They've donated $18,000 of medical equipment to the local hospital in Ciudad Cortes for COVID relief efforts. $7,800 was donated to the Uvita community food bank, a Foundation in charge of identifying and distributing food to those families in greatest need. More than 4,600 trees have been planted with the local water board to protect the springs that feed water to all of Uvita. Eight monkey bridges have been built through a cooperative alliance with The Electrical Institute of Costa Rica. They've donated $17k to fund local water system upgrades. And over 30 tons of trash have been recollected during clean-up activities nationwide.    If you'd like to catch a glimpse of some of the workshops that took place at Envision, I recorded a few of them for the Envision Festival Playlist on our YouTube Channel. Among them is a panel discussion on the challenges that can arise in Building Eco-Villages, a talk about Decolonizing Permaculture, and some other exciting bits.   If you're new to Regeneration Nation Costa Rica, subscribe to the podcast to stay updated with future releases. On this episode Matt sits down with Savej. Born and raised in the Honey Island Swamp of Louisiana, Savej [pron. savage] (@savejofficial) is known around the globe for his unique and captivating “Ancient Future” sound. His integration of ancestral medicine music, organic soundscapes, and exotic world instruments with groovy tribal rhythms and Louisiana flavor effectively bridges the gap between cultures and the Ages of time. Savej's live experience is designed to be sacred and celebratory sonic ceremony, a remembrance of who and what we are as human beings, and a reflection of the primordial essence that binds all things – all while infusing irresistibly danceable grooves and heavy-hitting bass. He has performed at some of the most sought after stages and festivals, ranging from the legendary Luna Stage at Envision Festival in Costa Rica to the Portal Stage at Area 15 in Las Vegas. Savej holds a deep passion for his frequent collaborations with indigenous tribes and has been entrusted as a bridge to infuse indigenous medicine songs into his music, a mission which is reciprocated by directly supporting the cultures they originate from via donation of record sales and creation of NFTs infusing indigenous art and music. During the conversation the two dive deeply into the topic of manifestation; what the term means, how to use it, and what is meant and not meant for you to manifest. They then discuss synchronicity generally, but then specifically in relation to Ketamine, a dissociative psychedelic medicine, that seems to amplify synchronicity, or our understanding of it. Finally the two land on the topic of Aliens - what they are, their intentions, and our relationship to them. We then get a small glimpse into what is ahead in the next Savej album, releasing later this year. This one is a wormhole. In today's episode, we get the privilege of visiting with not one but two leaders in the regenerative space, Jean Pullen & Alan Cacao. Through their project Regenerate Your Reality, Jean & Alan have been tirelessly promoting permaculture education, seed propagation, food sovereignty, & community-building projects throughout the country.      Regenerate Your Reality is a permaculture, agroforestry, and education project working to bring sovereignty and happiness to our communities. ⁣It's their mission to restore the relationship between humans and the earth to build a regenerative present.   They start the conversation by describing their work educating people at their biodiversity sanctuary in the mountains, near Platanillo, up the hill from Dominical. If you schedule a visit to their 1-hectare food forest, you'll be welcomed to a tour of more than 300 species of food they have planted there. All of which is a living seed bank.We discuss their partnerships with Kiss the Ground & Jungle Project and how they've been empowering local farmers with a regenerative livelihood, growing syntropic food forests with a focus on the abundantly producing breadfruit tree.   With the help of Earth University, INA (Costa Rica's National Institute for Learning), and Kiss the Ground, these two life advocates and the rest of their friends at The Jungle Project provide ongoing, multi-year technical assistance to small-scale farmers on a variety of organic regenerative practices. The organization's mission is Trees, Training & Trade. The farming families learn to restore and maintain the ecological health of their farmland in ways that improve their nutrition and their income.    This crew is actively seeding a regenerative nation.    As Alan put it, connecting with the earth is our first medicine and one worth practicing daily. Participating in a world where the color green is ever out your window, and the sounds of birds and insects are perpetually punctuating the periphery of your awareness -  for me, that's a life I want to live. It's the one I want to participate in preserving and passing on to my grandchildren.     I loved the moment when all three of us were relating to the transformative power we're gifted with when we embody the experience of volunteering or interning at a permaculture center. You become a product of that project. It changes your life forever.   I was impressed to learn that the Jungle Project is rewarding partner farms by buying 80% of the fruit they produce.    Their mission is to substitute grains in people's diets with breadfruit. Changing people's habits can be a long road, but it doesn't stop them from walking it. After the interview, I had the pleasure of trying Alan's handmade breadfruit tortillas with the abundant garden salad we all shared. The tortillas were delicious and had a very agreeable texture! I think they have a shot.   If you'd like to learn more from Jean and Alan, check out Regenerate Your Reality's website and the permaculture webinars they've created. You can find Jean's book there, as well.   That's what I've got for you this time. If you like the episode, pass it on to a friend. There is another way to get what you want Recognizing what you actually want Alphas don't look the same and they will never do Understanding what motivates you What does power mean to you? Understanding what you want and when you want it Money, power and sex The more you think you know, the less you have to learn Couldn't handle being wrong Knowing that the work is never done Working out the emotional connection What is the workout that you're doing for your soul? Starting to do the work and trust yourself How to be the master of your emotions   "I trust my path, I trust my decision making, I trust where I'm headed and I trust that I'm coming from love"   "The trigger is an indication that something inside of you was there to be triggered in the first place, so, what is that thing?"   "Awareness gives us choice, without awareness we can't choose anything different in life"   About Adam: Adam Roa is an entrepreneur and a 7-figure coach who has worked with high-performing clients such as actors, medical professionals, and CEOs. Over the course of six studio albums, Ayla has cultivated her style by bucking industry norms and confidently coloring beyond the lines. The self-produced, full-length album Hollow Bone ushered in a global audience, as Ayla dramatically expanded her sonic palate on a series of groundbreaking records with folktronica duo Wildlight. 2016's sophomore solo The Code of the Flowers and later By the Light of the Dark Moon furthered her artistic and spiritual trajectories into new musical territory. Incorporating elements of Celtic melodies, pristine acoustic instrumentation, electronic flourishes, and ancient prose within hip-hop cadences, Nereo possesses an uncanny ability to disarm and crack open the heart. She sings to the depth of our humanness, for the protection of precious wild lands and all living creatures. Her ornate songs splash color across a multi-hued canvas of sound. Often supported by her live band, Ayla Nereo toured the U.S. extensively in recent years; highlighted by four performances at the hallowed Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, as well as international plays in Europe, Australia, Canada, and Envision Festival in Costa Rica. In 2014, Nereo made headlines on the 33-city, nationwide Permaculture Action Tour with The Polish Ambassador. She's also shared the stage with a diverse array of artists including  Mr. Lif, Rising Appalachia, Trevor Hall, Medicine for the People, Mike Love, and many others. In addition to music, Ayla Nereo is a filmmaker, dancer, and environmentalist; she has committed herself to bettering the world through her art. She proves to be an activist artist across multiple fronts, partnering with non-profit TreeSisters, an organization that uses concert ticket proceeds to plant trees across the globe. Her song ‘Seeds' was short-listed for an Oscar nomination (Best Original Song for a Documentary), while ‘Flicker' was named 2020 Track of the Year in France's Ziklibrenbib contest.https://www.aylanereo.com *** Support this free podcast by joining the East Forest COUNCIL on Patreon.  Monthly Zoom Council, Podcast exclusives, private Patreon live-stream ceremony, and more.  Check it out and a great way to support the podcast and directly support the work of East Forest! - http://patreon.com/eastforestNew Music from East Forest! -"Possible" - the latest album  from East Forest - LISTEN ON YOUR FAVORITE STREAMING PLATFORM: Spotify / AppleOrder the album on vinyl - limited edition + check out the new Possible clothing: http://eastforest.org *****Please rate Ten Laws w/East Forest on iTunes.  It helps us get the guests you want to hear.  ***Catch East Forest LIVE - Pledge your interest in the upcoming East Forest Ceremony Concert events this Spring/Summer 2021.  More info and join us at eastforest.org/tour Join the newsletter and be part of the East Forest Community. Listen to East Forest guided meditations on Spotify & Apple Check out the East Forest x Ram Dass album on (Spotify & Apple) + East Forest's Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner 5hr album (Spotify & Apple). Stay in the East Forest flow:Mothership:  http://eastforest.org/IG:  https://www.instagram.com/eastforest/FB:  https://www.facebook.com/EastForestMusic/TW:  https://twitter.com/eastforestmusicPATREON: http://patreon.com/eastforest

Host Kash Khan interviews ethnobotanist Stephen Brooks, the co-founder and co-producer of the annual Envision Festival in Costa Rica. He’s also founder of Punta Mona Center for Regenerative Design and Botanical Studies. He has started several ecological communities in Costa Rica and is launching the Ecoversity.   In this podcast, Stephen talks about the influence the design of his childhood neighborhood had on him at a young age, the importance of permaculture on his life's work, and the ecological neighborhoods he is creating in Costa Rica. The Educate Inspire Change Takeaway:   “How can we be able to sleep at night knowing that we’re supporting industries that are so destructive and sad?”   “Permaculture really is the empowerment and the confidence and the toolkit to realize wait a minute, we have a say. We can do things differently. We can become resilient.”   2:40: Stephen talks about his childhood and how the physical design of his neighborhood fostered community.   4:30: Stephen shares the memory of the first time he visited Costa Rica and witnessing a playground full of indegenous children get sprayed by Chiquita Banana crop duster, and how this experience “jolted” him awake on an environmental and social level.   12:28: Stephen says that Punta Mona taught the first permaculture classes in Costa Rica and expands on the meaning of the word, and that it’s not an agricultural system but an ecological design philosophy.   16:20: Kash asks Stephen if he sees what he is doing happening anywhere else in the world, and Stephen shares an “epic story” that a friend told him that gives him faith that this is happening all over.    19:50: Stephen describes his experience with psychedelics and how they have helped him grow and engage with the world around him, and his worry that people can overuse psychedelics before processing their experiences.   25:40: Stephen explains the ecological neighborhoods he has been building in Costa Rica and his efforts to merge agriculture, education, community design, and events into 1,000 hectares of space at a time through radically reforesting and regenerating the land.   33:31: Stephen talks about the importance of training people to recreate communities and break free from current societal structures, and how permaculture teaches us to become intentional and efficient, which helps individuals redesign aspects of reality.  List of Resources -https://www.puntamona.org - Punta Mona -https://www.ecoversity.org - Ecoversity  -https://www.envisionfestival.com - Envision Festival -https://maps.org - Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) -https://www.instagram.com/puntamona/ - Punta Mona Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/envisionfestival/ - Envision Festival Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/alegriavillage/  - Alegria Village Instagram Guest Contact Info -https://www.facebook.com/Puntamona - Facebook -https://www.instagram.com/stephenrbrooks/?hl=en - Instagram  Sponsors: EcoLife Supplements  This podcast is proudly supported by EcoLife Supplements, Rythmia Life Advancement Center and our very own Psychedelic Documentary series PANTERA   Whilst in Costa Rica last year I came across a guy by the name of Anthony Walsh who handed me a bottle of hemp extract CBD oil and after just taking a few drops I was sold. Featured guests NIKKI GLASPIE and NICK CASSARINO of THE NTH POWER, as well as an introspective chat with Oregon-based artist/entrepreneur CLAY McCABE (of ZIPPER RESCUE). I am lucky and honored to call each of these inspiring human beings my dear friends in real life. The music of The Nth Power often reaches me with an emotional impact that is unrivaled in the culture today, and in that resonant reaction, I know I am far from alone. Nikki and Nicky Cake were kind enough to make some time for separate interviews, conducted in the cozy confines of the legendary High Sierra Music Festival 2019, over the 4th of July weekend in Quincy, CA. Due to the hectic nature of their festival itineraries, which we discuss in detail, neither were able to sit down with me for the customary, career-spanning interview that we like to unveil here at the Upful LIFE, but I can assure you that in the future, I intend to wrangle both Nikki and Nick for all of the important historically-relevant rabbit holes we can tunnel. For now, I am grateful to have gotten 15 potent minutes with "The Evangelist" Nikki, and 25 introspective minutes with "The Master Prophet" Cassarino. Then, on the heels of that abundance we take a deep dive with Mr. Zips, Clay McCabe, most certainly a person of interest in his own right.   R.I.P. "POPPA FUNK" ART NEVILLE (12.17.37 - 7.22.19)    Before getting into the three interviews, we had to take a few moments to pay tribute to the dearly departed Art "Poppa Funk" Neville, co-founder of The Neville Brothers and The Meters, and a true patriarch of New Orleans funk music. The legendary singer/organist peacefully passed on July 22nd after a lengthy illness. Few people have had the impact on multiple generations of fans and genres quite like Art Neville. The proof is in the music, and the music never stops. Condolences to his son Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, nephew Ivan Neville, the entire Neville family and the great city of New Orleans.   NIKKI GLASPIE INTERVIEW at 20mins       Nikki Glaspie has always held space for people in her life, through music, love, compassion and overstanding the human condition in a profound way. Just before taking the stage with her old friend Jen Hartswick and a phenomenal band, Glaspie sits down to explore a number of topics in a small window of time. We start with how to approach an mammoth endeavor like The Nth Power's tribute to Marvin Gaye (which we featured on Episode 017), prepping a big band for a tribute like this one or those that have come before. This discussion takes place after Nth had reprised the Marvin-homage a night earlier at HSMF. I asked her about Nth's emotional impact on their fans- in essence their "brand"- and their uncanny ability to inhabit the culture's generational greats and interpolate iconic songbooks of socially/politically relevant material. More on how those lyrics and messages are as important today as they were forty years ago.  www.HaroldRobinsonFoundation.org From there, a bit on "being the change you want to see", the current trio formation of The Nth Power, and how they write and perform music that is intentional. We transition into some philosophical/cultural matters of importance, and to how people can be of service to communities. Nikki takes this opportunity to let folks know about the efforts with the HAROLD ROBINSON FOUNDATION, in SoCal, a non-profit organization that works toward inspiring and empowering children (primarily people of color) trapped in a cycle of poverty within the inner city. We finish up this brief but enthralling chat with a trip into the wayback machine that takes us to Vermont with the Godmother herself, Jen Hartswick, who's responsible for The Nth Power's entire existence, and the connection between these two women, plus Nate Edgar and Nick Cassarino. When these four touched souls take the stage together, Nikki is steadfast- the sum is far greater than the parts. Thank you Nikki Glaspie, you are love. In between interviews, enjoy The Nth Power's brand-new track "Reach Out", recorded live from Paste Studios in NYC.    NICK CASSARINO INTERVIEW at 45mins Glaspie's bandmate and spiritual brother Nick Cassarino is among the more thrilling frontmen who is doin' the damn thing out there in 2019. His mojo has another gear, and the manner and fashion in which he connects with fans when performing is already the stuff of legend. We jump right into the J-Ha/Nth Power High Sierra takeover, how that all goes down, and why having the Vermont homie Bryan McNamara on hand was especially important to Nick. We touch on some of the same topics I did with Nikki, with regard to the Marvin Gaye tribute, stepping into the shoes of the giants, and how that sort of passion and purpose rubs off on The Nth Power's original music. Nick explains how the songwriting and performances for the forthcoming LP Reverence are about "focusing the vibe" and making the songs have the emotional impact necessary to communicate the salient messages within them, and do so inspired by the greats who've come before them, but delivered in their own unique Nth voice.  Jen Hartswick & Nick Cassarino with Trey Anastasio and Christian McBride Nick then takes the opportunity to speak on his scintillating duo project with Jen Hartswick, who's album together Nexus made Upful LIFE's 18 Favorite Albums of 2018. So we riff a little a bit further on their Vermont roots that Nikki spoke of earlier, bound to cover just a little more ground. Nick then ties it all together, and announces that J-Ha/Nick and The Nth Power are actually touring together soon. Yep, these two magical artistic entities will spread the healing power of music from city to city each and every night. On the J-Ha tip, Nick reflects on the night that Trey Anastasio and Christian McBride performed the Nexus material with Nick and Jen in NYC. For the exciting end of the interview, Cassarino takes us through the situation when John Mayer decided to sit in with him at Cassarino's standing Sunday solo gig at NYC's Olive Tree. Truly a fascinating tale, and boy, is Nicky Cake ever the story-teller. When we find the time to take the deep dive on his career-arc, please believe I will be asking him to spin yarns like these for the full hour.  Giving Thanks & Praises to both Nikki and Nick from The Nth Power for making the time for these wonderful shares. LARGE UP The Nth Power bassist Nate Edgar, on general principle. He may not have been interviewed on this day, but he is. without question, THE MAN, no two ways about it.  The Nth Power LOVES You. CLAY McCABE aka MR.ZIPS INTERVIEW AT 1HR 15MINS  Behold KING ZIPS!! Get Familiar at www.ZipperRescue.com To close out Episode 021 we welcome CLAY McCABE, aka MR.ZIPS to the show for a wonderful conversation that took place late at night at the ViBE JUNKiE Studios in Oakland Ca in the beginning of summer. For some context, I met Clay in the jungles of Costa Rica during Envision Festival in February 2014, and it's been a joy to check out his journey in this life ever since. He is the owner and proprietor of ZIPPER RESCUE, a patented zipper fix-it product kit that has become an invaluable item at festivals around the world, and most certainly in Black Rock City at the end of every August. Clay takes us through his international travels and meditations as a young man and how those experiences, plus his late father's death, prompted him to take the reigns at the family business, Zipper Rescue.  In addition to being a festy celebrity of sorts for his handy product and his willingness to help hundreds of people at every event he frequents, from Burning Man to Global Eclipse Gathering to the event that has his heart and his roots, Oregon Country Fair, Clay is also an tremendous artist and sculptor, so we discuss his early days making art at OCF and how that culture has informed his work moving forward. We talk Da Vinci's Workshop at Burning Man 2016, and some of his primary intentions and philosophies in creating art. Clay also had a pivotal role in the building of OneDome, the interactive art experience and mixed reality playground in downtown SF that was my former place of employ. The ambitious startup endeavor, conceived and unleashed by many members of Clay and my shared festival family, unfortunately ran out of funding and abruptly closed earlier this summer, but at the time of this interview, we were still holdin' on, and frankly there's plenty to be proud of with regard to working with OneDome. All in all, a revealing discussion with an extremely unique and inspired fella who, like Nikki and Nicky Cake before him, I am honored and proud to call a friend in real life.    *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week*    North Carolina emcee RAPSODY drops an absolute heater in “Ibtihaj”, featuring GZA and D'Angelo!! "Ibtihaj" is named after Ibtihaj Muhammed, an Olympic fencer who won the bronze in the 2016 games and was the first American Olympian to wear a hijab while participating. Rapsody interpolates GZA's timeless 1995 classic "Liquid Swords" on her track, with the undeniable staccato groove that is burned into our skulls from so many spins through the years. R&B Jesus hops on the chorus, and somehow, D manages to take the Genius refrain "When the emcees came...", Gospelize it and make it his own, then GZA himself hops on for the ultimate co-sign, the guest verse. In this episode, Rachel is approaching a heavy day. Five years ago, she spent Envision Festival with her best friend. She didn’t know it then, but it was the last time she would see her - she past away a few days after. Now, Rachel is at Envision Festival again after giving birth to Luna and heavy feelings are still being stirred up. She shares the story of this day of mourning and the mysterious synchronicity around Luna’s birth and her return to Costa Rica this year that gave meaning to it all.  When we lose a big love in our life we have to remember: we were so lucky to experience a love that deep. We had something that cracked our hearts open, gave us so much, and still gives us lessons each and every day. We may never fully heal, but this episode will cement your faith in the notion that the loved ones we’ve lost are never too far away.

As a child, Sarah Wu Spent a lot of time outside making friends with animals, trolls, and flowers. As an angry 90's art kid she naturally wanted to challenge her Catholic upbringing. She actually preferred the teachings and practices that honored feminine power as well as masculine. Because it's all about balance! It didn't take Sarah very long to realize she was indeed, a Witch. But not the witch you might think. She isn't out to steal your money, life, beauty or anything like that. Think more along the lines of Glinda the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz, but here to help along your wellness journey. Sarah is a wise herbal medicine woman residing in the Southern Caribbean coast of Costa Rica at Punta Mona, a beachfront botanical collection and permaculture farm. At Punta Mona Center Sarah is the Director and Educational Curator. She is also one of the Co-Founders of Envision Festival, a celebration dedicated to awakening our human potential. The festival takes place in the next town over from where I'm currently living in Costa Rica so I was very excited to chat with Sarah about the intention and operation behind the festival. Sarah and I also discuss her tough journey with in-vitro fertilization. If you're considering in-vitro for your family, you're going to want to listen to Sarah's advice and personal experience. We talk all about the placebo effect in healing practices, walking the self-healing path as a healer, the murder of innocent women during the witch trials, exploitation of plants for medicine, lessons from off-grid living, and practicing non-attachment as a retreat facilitator. For those of you plant loving, meditating, wandering collections of light and love out there who want to hear from The Village Witch herself, you're in the right place! I also have a BIG announcement to share at the end of this episode so be sure to stick around until the very end! If you do, YOU get to be a part of the future of Wander Well Podcast!

Episode 006 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* is proud to welcome Random Rab to the show for what is an enlightening conversation, a free exchange of ideas cutting a wide swath over his magical journey and meteoric career. But first, shout-outs to scene stalwarts JamBase and Silverback Music Management, a look toward New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, before we kick things off. A rundown of what's on the horizon for Upful LIFE coverage in December, including DJ Williams/Shots Fired, Dimond Saints, Thriftworks, the annual Favorite Albums listicle, and much more. We take a moment to discuss how people can get involved, donate and help out with the devastating Camp Fire in Northern California. Snap-judgements/hot-takes on Anderson .Paak's highly-anticipated third full-length LP Oxnard, as we examine the oft-putting casual misogyny that runs throughout the record. We discuss and have a listen to .Paak's "Cheers" (featuring Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest), a touching eulogy-in-song to dearly departed emcees Mac Miller and Phife Dawg. Photo by Zipporah Lomax List of organizations to donate to help victims of the Camp Fire.  We met up with Random Rab in early November in his "White Whale", an old-school Sprinter van that he uses as a trusty mobile-dwelling on the road, this was the cozy confines for our dance down memory lane. Rab was in the midst of a Fall tour up the West Coast, and was teaming with longtime pals Dirtwire for a sold-out engagement at the Cornerstone in Berkeley CA. As such, the host caught Rab for about 30 minutes before the show, and another half-hour as Dirtwire was finishing up. Before diving in to the hour-long dialogue, I take a minute to recite my own 2017 artist bio of Random Rab, to further familiarize listeners with our very special guest. (SHAMELESS PLUG: Need an artist bio? HMU! B.Getz@UpfulLIFE.com ) Random Rab segment begins at 30:30, Interview starts at 36:00 In this heart-filling interview, Rab brings us back to his humble beginnings in Fort Wayne, Indiana as a classical-music student on the trumpet, and his heavy metal adolescence on guitar, before taking us on a cross-country jaunt that relocates him on the West Coast after a brief stint in Mexico. Most notably, he breaks down the origins of the seminal El Circo troupe, and Rab spends several minutes beautifully eulogizing his friend, the late Tiffa Novoa, a pioneering fashion designer and matriarch in Burning Man culture who tragically passed away in 2007. Rab reflects on what Tiffa meant to him and El Circo, and on being asked to master the ceremonies at her funeral. We both explore how this avant-garde collective and halcyon era would sew a myriad of embryonic seeds that continue to flourish inside and out of festival culture so many years later. Tiffa Novoa 1975-2007 (photo: social-creature.com) Random Rab at El Circo camp, Burning Man 2009 Click HERE for Upful LIFE's RANDOM RAB Playlist  From there, Rab and I touch a number of topics and tales from his lengthy career : seminal songs and records, his masterful mining of sorrow for authentic artistic expression, harnessing other emotions as he's both become a father and matured as a musician. About his 20-year consecutive Burning Man streak, how his legendary sunrise sets were born on the Playa, and how they have grown to otherworldly levels of grandeur for eight consecutive blissed-out years at Envision Festival in Costa Rica. (At one point, Dirtwire's David Satori knocked on the door of the van so we took a minute to chat with him off air. We also break so Rab can perform to a sold-out room, before Dirtwire takes the stage.) To break up the split in the interview I play my favorite Random Rab song "Kloud Kings" (1:02:10) from ARose, then we return to the conversation (1:07:00). Rab recalls how a fan once proposed to his partner at a sunrise set (I was present for this magic), and how that same benevolent man gave Rab maybe the greatest personalized gift he's ever received. We talk about how Rab's music has fundamentally changed from 2000's Epicycle to 2017's Formless Edge, and how he's approaching songcraft, guitar playing (and instrumentation in general) in 2018. Rab explains why when recording with fellow musicians, it's essential for him to actually get in the studio in person, and how friendship and collective conviction are at the root of nearly all of his numerous collaborations. All of that jazz and a whole lot MOUR in this candid and open-hearted pow-wow with the whimsical wizard Random Rab.   After we wrap up with Rab, (1:37:00) I felt compelled to share some personal reflections regarding my guest's ever-looming influence in my own life. This powerful interview led me to open up considerably, with regard to when Rab and I first met outside the Fractal Planet sound camp at Burning Man 2013, and how that fateful morning interaction and his eventual co-sign (of a festival media application) steered me (and JamBase) towards Symbiosis Gathering 2013, which were the first pages of the next chapters of my musical life, and career as a journalist. From there I was driven to dig even deeper, and unpack something we touched on in the interview, this time in far greater and more intimate detail. Click HERE for RANDOM RAB'S MOURNING MIX   My father Lloyd Getz passed away in April 2015, at a time when I was incarcerated, and I revisit how Random Rab's music reached me in my darkest hour of need, even there in the custody of the State of California. My story then takes us back to Black Rock City, to the Temple at Burning Man in 2016, when I finally had the chance to honor my father's death on my own terms. Again, Rab organically and cosmically becomes embedded into this narrative, and I only chose to reveal this extremely personal reflection because it's so closely interwoven with my guest; I hope that both Rab and I can serve to bring others a measure of comfort and inspiration if they are going through similarly dark times. The Temple burns at Burning Man 2016 We conclude with the Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week, "Cloaked" by Tipper, (2:35:00) a ebullient and emotive piece of music Dave Tipper composed and released on the day of his own father's death in 2017. I thought it appropriate to include this mystical track at the tail end of Episode 006 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast*.  Rest in Power Lloyd L. Getz, ~bg~   The Upful LIFE Podcast is available on iTunes! Tara Danielle Brooks Biography: There is a line where the dark fuses with the light, the surreal with the sublime, the graceful with the powerful; it is within this line that Tara Brooks has carved out her truly distinct sound. Whether playing at an intimate club, a packed festival or a magical sunrise deep in the Burning Man Playa, Tara's music envelopes the crowd, stirring them with deep grooves, hypnotic rhythms and haunting melodies. Behind the decks, her passion and love for music is contagious— Savoring every moment her smile beams out to a sea of faces who are right there with her, dancing away and smiling right back. Growing up in a house where the warm melodies of old records constantly filled the air, the Southern California-born Tara began absorbing music at a very early age. She grew up having a love and appreciation for everything from classical to classic rock, from hip-hop to punk and everything in between. But it was within the Los Angeles underground dance scene where Tara ultimately found her calling. Struck by the power of the music and the loving vibe of the scene, Tara immediately knew she had to be a part of it. Learning on vinyl, Tara put her first needle on a record in 2007 and hasn't looked back since. With her unique sound, loving energy and fierce work ethic leading the charge, Tara has played some of the most respected venues both domestic and abroad including The BPM Festival, WMC Space, Lightning in a Bottle, Sound (Los Angeles), PublicWorks (SF) Verboten (New York) and of course a little place she calls Home, Burning Man. When she's not touring, you can find Tara locked in the studio. Rather then focusing on genre or style, Tara is sonically inspired by personal experience and connection with her environment. Always striving to translate a specific feeling or moment, Tara creates a sound that is all her own: Compelling, sophisticated, haunting and healing, piercing your heart and invigorating your soul. Whether it's through production or playing, Tara's continued passion for sharing her music knows no bounds. From being Desert Hearts and Subtract Music's newest resident to kicking of the new year with Louie Fresco's MEXA Records BPM party and Costa Rica's Envision Festival along with several productions and remixes being set for release the future is filled with light for Tara Brooks as she continues to do what she loves her way and always from the heart. In turn, our work reduces the number of drug-related hospitalizations and arrests.” Why is a program like Zendo necessary? This week on The RIPEcast East Coast meets West as the Space Cowboys welcome DJ Everyday (PEX/Playloop) from Philadelphia to the 1s and 2s. Press play and enjoy, Boys and Girls! A little more background on this week's guest... For some people, music is not a hobby but a way of life – something that fills and inspires each day and every breath. DJ Everyday lives this reality with every beat he drops, whether he is producing tech-laden grooves, performing at major international music festivals, helping to run Playloop Records or throwing the infamous PEX parties in his native Philadelphia. Not many performers can claim to have opened for Deadmau5 and played sunrise on the Playa at Burning Man, but DJ Everyday straddles these two worlds with ease and a smile, uniting the electronic music community beyond appearances or geography. Consistently on-point with fun and refined sets of tech house and techno, DJ Everyday is an integral force in the electronic arts scene, a local luminary whose duties range from sound guy to A& R to party starter. Known for his keen ability to read the crowd and connect on an emotional and spiritual level, DJ Everyday’s down-to-earth vibe and laid-back attitude belie the fact that he has played hundreds and hundreds of clubs, festivals, parties and concerts, including an opening spot in San Francisco with the legendary Orbital on their 2010 tour. A drummer by trade, DJ Everyday has been producing and performing for over a decade. His powerful style and positive vibe have made him a favorite not only in Philly where he plays as resident at PEX parties, but also at dance floors across the nation and around the world. Since signing with Playloop Records in 2006, DJ Everyday has released a number of singles through the label both independently and in collaboration with friend and producer Kezner as “Locality.”   A major force in the Philadelphia party scene, DJ Everyday has been playing the popular Philadelphia Experiment (PEX) parties since 2007 and now helps to throw some of the top events of the year, from bigger shows like Heartburn and the Halloween Ball to more intimate one-offs.  This year, he is one of the producers of the SubCulture music festival in Philadelphia.  This year is off to a pounding start for DJ Everyday.  Proving that beats know no bounds, this world-touring DJ continues his musical expeditions into 2012; having just performed multiple dates in Costa Rica, including the Envision Festival, as well as the release of his new single "Nepenthe" with Matt Cue.  In between global gigs, you can hear DJ Everyday at the PEX vs. Playloop monthly parties in Philadelphia, or at the SubCulture Music Festival and PEX Summer Festival in June. In addition to his heavy touring schedule, watch for DJ Everyday to release a new EP in collaboration with Matt Cue later this year.  Fresh and fun, DJ Everyday’s beats need no special occasion to make you move…just put on the record and dance- every day.
