Hosea 10:12: Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain salvation upon you. Matthew 13:7: Other seeds fell upon thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Jeremiah 4:3: For this is what the LORD says to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem: “Break up your uncultivated ground, and do not sow among thorns.” (NASB) Proverbs 28:13: He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Here Be Dragons: Lenten Meditations on the Silence and Darkness of God Bishop Michael Hunn introduces a series of three meditations titled "Here Be Dragons," focusing on Lent, the silence and darkness of God, and wilderness times, and exploring the APHA tradition of theology as a way of speaking about God when there is little to say. The meditations are designed as an audible experience available on both podcast and YouTube, with simple visuals, and listeners are invited to settle in with coffee or tea, perhaps light a candle, and pray along. In today's episode, Laura and Caitlin talk about waiting in dormancy and why God's timing is perfect, despite circumstances screaming the opposite. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Romans 5:8: But God shows his love for us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us. Mark 9:43–48: If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. Better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, where “their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.” 1 Corinthians 10:31: So, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Isaiah 60:22: I am the Lord; in its time I will hasten it. Deuteronomy 32:4: The Rock, his work is perfect; for all his ways are justice. Galatians 6:9: Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. Romans 4:20–21: No distrust made him waver concerning the promises of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Genesis 37:29: When Reuben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was not in the pit, he tore his clothes. The Christian season of Lent is the forty days (not including Sundays) before Easter. The number 40 comes from the days Jesus spent in the wilderness being tempted by Satan. Lent is marked by personal and corporate reflection, sacrifice, and repentance.This Lent, we will accompany Jesus through his last two days before he is crucified. Together, we will journey through the five most significant and painful moments of Jesus' life before he enters Jerusalem for the last time. Today's reading leads us through Deuteronomy 1 and 2, revisiting Moses' reminders to the Israelites as they prepare to enter the Promised Land, and Mark 12, where Jesus offers profound teachings about authority, resurrection, love, and true devotion to God. Hunter guides us through the narrative, reflecting on Israel's wandering, God's faithful provision, and the call to trust Him fully—even when the journey gets long or the challenges seem impossible. In Mark's Gospel, Jesus addresses tough questions from the religious leaders, teaching us about giving to God what is truly His—ourselves—and highlighting the importance of loving God and our neighbors above all. After the readings, we're invited into a thoughtful time of prayer led by Unknown, centering our hearts on peace, unity, and surrendering our lives back to God. Hunter also marks the significance of Ash Wednesday, inviting everyone—regardless of tradition—to walk together through the reflective season of Lent as we prepare our hearts for Easter. Join us in this sacred space as we listen to God's Word, offer our hearts in prayer, and remember the deep truth: you are God's beloved, and you are not alone on the journey. TODAY'S DEVOTION: The coin belongs to Caesar, but you—you belong to God. That's what Jesus wants you to see. As Hunter points out, the religious leaders tried to trap Jesus in a web of money, power, and politics, but he would not be caught in the snare of their idols. Instead, Jesus took a simple coin and asked whose image was stamped upon it. "Caesar's," they answered. But then Jesus took this moment to direct their hearts—and ours—to a far deeper reality. You are made in God's image. His imprint is upon you, just as surely as Caesar's image is on that coin. Therefore, your truest belonging is not to any ruler or any fleeting thing, but to God himself. As the catechism proclaims, "We are not our own, but belong to God." This is our hope in life and death. You are his—his child, his family, his beloved. So what do we give to God? Ourselves. Returning to him what is already his. When we do this—when we yield our hearts, our loves, our lives—we are freed from the idols and traps that entangle so many: money, politics, power. Instead, we find our truest and most joyful life in him. As Hunter reminds us, our real life is "hidden with God in Christ." This is the deepest truth about who we are. Let us learn to walk this out, returning daily to the God who made us, offering ourselves in love and trust. That is my prayer for my own soul. That is my prayer for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that is my prayer for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... They're going to put him on hospice. Wondering if he's in the right place. How to navigate making decisions. Can't always meet what we're hoping to have. Hospice and not knowing how to navigate. (18:54) Break 1 What does Saint Therese of Lisieux teach us about surrender to God? (22:55) Marisa - Last year, for Ash Wednesday and Lent, I vowed to give up alcohol. I used it as a crutch rather than surrounding to the Lord. I did the surrender novena, drank that night, but seven nights later, I gave it up and it's been a year of sobriety. (31:01) Stan email – are there any short prayers to say to not despair over past sins? Patrick - I've had some success surrendering to God. I have this sloth. It's tough. Lack of discipline. Need more help from God. (35:19) Break 2 Email from a listener wanting husband getting her husband back to Mass. (39:24) Elanore - I was given my sister's ashes. I'm driving around with them right now. I surrender, but have no direction. I'm looking for sacred ground. Nobody understands the relationship. She died in a nursing home. I need guidance. I believe she was a sacrificial lamb. I hold her in high regard while the rest of my family doesn't agree. Email about surrender when others don’t listen as well (45:42) Marge - I've learned to surrender to Him. I finally realized what the Our Father really means. I've experienced different things. Been praying for granddaughter for years. I have a lot of priest friends I'm in regular contact with. Was told to completely talk to Jesus and lay all in front of the cross. Mentor and confession is important.

A 4-year-old's Lenten question opens a bigger one: what does it actually mean to “act like Jesus” and pray, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”? We Have Been Set Free 1 Corinthians 6:12 “ All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.” The prayer point for the healing service team today is to free the captives. This instantly made me think of my friend who I am praying for this week. I have asked those I know to give me a Bible verse, and I will assign a different verse to each week of the year. Then I will pray for that person during the week I have assigned their verse. This week, I am praying for my friend, and instead of praying for her, she has asked for prayers for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza and for food and medical aid to reach the sick and injured. When I read the Captives this morning, I thought of all of those who were captured in the Gaza Strip many months ago. Then, when I started reading the scripture verses we were given, I realized there are many ways that we can be held captive. Some of us are physically held captive, like those in war-torn countries, those who were abducted and forced into human trafficking of all kinds. There are also many of us who are held captive by our own beliefs, addictions, or wants and desires.   This morning, while I was reading over the various verses, I asked the Lord to highlight the one he wanted me to talk about. I asked Him to make it clear to me. He actually highlighted two verses. The first one that jumped out was the verse above. 1 Corinthians 6:12 says, “All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be dominated by anything.” I thought this was particularly fitting for today since yesterday was Ash Wednesday, and so Lent has just begun. Lent can be a difficult time of year because it is a time of sacrifice. It can also be a sad time of year as we remember all Christ went through to save us from our sins, to save us from ourselves. Lent is also a great time of year to show ourselves that we don't have to be controlled by our wants and our desires. We get the chance to show God that although we love chocolate, wine, alcohol, beer, swearing, desserts, TV, or whatever else we decide to give up, we don't let them as much as we love HIm. We get to show ourselves that it is ok to deny ourselves something we want and that when we do we will be even more stronger for it. I have a friend named Sarah Jane. I remember she came over to my house one time, and I asked if she wanted a brownie. She said she gave up chocolate for the month. It wasn't lent so I asked her why she gave it up. She said each month, she gives something up for the month to show herself she can and so that she does not get too attached to anything. This is an awesome idea. I actually did this for a few months last year, but I don't think I made it past May. I do think it is important that we know that just because we can do something doesn't mean we should do it. It also doesn't mean it is good for us. If we want to be holy, we must go beyond the letter of the law. This is what the Sadducees and Pharisees were doing. They were following the letter of the law but not the spirit of the law. They were so focused on doing things perfectly that they lost all sight of what God was really about. They forgot about the love God had for His people. They forgot about His mercy. They got caught up in all the laws and the rules and somehow got lost. What I felt the Lord wanted me to remind you of today is that you do not have to become slaves to things of this world. The second scripture He highlighted to me is Galatians 5:1, which says, “For freedom, Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” This shows us that we have a choice. Before Jesus came to save us, we had fewer choices. Before Jesus came, we had the laws to tell us what we should do, but we didn't have the Holy Spirit inside of us to give us the strength to resist the things that were not good for us. Then Jesus came, and He died on the cross to set us free from sin. Then He went to be with His Father, and they sent the Holy Spirit to be with us so we would no longer be left on our own. Because of this, we no longer have to accept the yoke of slavery. Because of this, we have been set free. However, this does not mean that we are all free. We must make a choice to be free. We have to decide that our freedom in Christ is worth more than that cookie, that drink, that drug, that extramarital affair. Christ died so we could be free, but we still have to choose to be free. God has given us free will and He won't force us to follow Him or to love Him. He won't force us to choose Him. We have to do that on our own.  Well, not really on our own because He gave us the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of us. We can rely on that power. We do need to make the choice, but then we can rely on the Holy Spirit to help us keep that freedom. We can rely on the Holy Spirit to help us stay on the path we want to be on. When we feel like we want to be free of something and yet we don't think we can, we can't see a way to give it up. We can call on the Holy Spirit. We can ask the Holy Spirit to take away the desire for this thing. We can ask the Holy Spirit to come and give us strength. We can say, “Come, Holy Spirit, come.” The enemy wants us to think we don't have a choice. He wants us to think we can't do the hard thing. We can't give up drinking. We can't give up the drugs, the affairs, the food. The devil is a liar. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” It doesn't say some things, and it says all things. You can do all things because you have the mighty power of Jesus living inside of you. All you have to do is call upon that power. So, this Lenten season, let's remember that we are no longer slaves to our desires. Whatever you gave up for lent, it may seem like it is going to be a long 40 days. You might be thinking about it and thinking there is no way you make it 40 days without that thing. If so, remember that you are not dominated by anything. You are a free son or daughter of Christ and of the one true God. You can do anything with Christ! You have been set free! Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, you are truly amazing. We are so grateful you sent your son to set us free. We owe you a debt we could never pay, so we offer you these 40 days as a small token of our love for you. Please help us through these next 40 days. We ask that you help us every day. Lord, remind us when we forget that nothing will dominate us. Remind us when we forget that we do not have to accept the yoke of slavery. Remind us of your love and mercy each time we forget. We love you so much, and we ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name. Amen! Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus.
