In Abby Brenker and Ellyn Vander Wyden's VOICES CARRY, which premiered last Saturday, March 15 at the 2025 Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose, California, a woman (Gia Crovatin) returns to her lakefront childhood home, confronting the difficult memories of her mother's untimely death.Discovering an old diary in the shed, she's shocked to discover that not only did her mother write in it shortly before her death, but also did a slew of women, spanning back to the 1700s. What starts as historical intrigue devolves into potentially supernatural obsession as the history of trauma and secrets within the diary's pages leave her swearing she can hear the voices of these women calling to her from across the lake.VOICES CARRY is, at times, too tepidly paced for its own good. Are these voices real? Are they hallucinations of a stressed mind? This tightrope requires a delicate balance to get right but the movie almost goes too delicate, leaving the mystery up to expository dumps and a flurry of beautifully shot scenes that leave me cold.Don't get me wrong. I love Mauricio Vasquez's cinematography, mainly its voyeuristic approach and techniques that help translate the protagonist's state of mind. This lakefront property looks like a travel ad at times, it's so pristine.I think with this movie, the mileage may vary depending on where expectations lie. For those interested in how woman's mental health difficulties are misdiagnosed throughout history - witchcraft, hysteria, possession, etc. - this story may provide a valuable perspective. I just wish the movie also provided a propulsive quality.---Please rate, review & subscribe to The Movies wherever you listen to podcasts!Follow The Movies on Instagram & Bluesky: linktr.ee/themovies_pod

Michael Canzoniero is an award winning writer/director working out of his film studio MCM Creative in midtown Manhattan. Born in the Bronx, and raised on the east end of Long Island, Michael grew up obsessed with making movies alongside his cousin Marco Ricci. After attending the University of Notre Dame, where he had his first taste of Hollywood working as a production assistant on the iconic sports movie “Rudy”, Canzoniero was accepted to NYU Graduate Film, alma mater of his directing hero Martin Scorsese. But it was his apprenticeship of maverick indie filmmaker Abel Ferrara (King of New York, Bad Lieutenant) that he credits as the formative piece in learning to make his own highly personal, independent films. After Canzoniero's thesis film “Pishadoo” was awarded the Princess Grace award for the nation's best student film, Michael and his cousin Marco co-wrote and co-directed the popular 2009 SXSW comedy “The Marconi Bros.”. He followed this with several more comedic indie films starring his Tony-winning friend and frequent collaborator Dan Fogler (who recently portrayed Francis Coppola in Paramount's The Offer). In 2022, Canzoniero theatrically released his fifth feature “Making The Day” which had its premiere at Cinequest Film Festival and is now available on Amazon video. Learn more about your ad choices. Directed by, written by and starring Colin Cunningham (“Falling Skies”, “Preacher”), Centigrade was the short film that could. Premiering in 2008, the film went on to win numerous awards, including the Cinequest Film Festival award for Best Narrative Short Film, which qualified it for an Oscar nomination. Originally conceived as a feature film, the short takes a segment from the script that works on its own. The story about a man (Cunningham) who wakes up to become the victim of a unique kind of justice is both intense and horrifying. Now the film makers are going to be bringing the full vision to life, and they want you to be a part of it! They have launched a Kickstarter campaign to get the ball rolling on the project. Talia Lugacy, director and co-writer of This Is Not A War Story, drops by the podcast to discuss the film's upcoming release. A collaborate work between Talia, her cast and crew, and a group of anti-war veterans, the film takes to task many of the conventional and stereotypical tropes that are associated with veteran portrayals in films and television. The film will be screened this upcoming weekend on Sunday, March 28 at 5:00pm, at the Cinequest Film Festival, followed by a Q&A with Talia, executive producer Rosario Dawson, actor Sam Adegoke, and veteran / About Face member Eli Wright. "THIS IS NOT A WAR STORY tracks a ragtag group of combat veterans in New York whose anti-war art, poetry and papermaking keep them together, despite the spectre of their friend’s suicide and the ever-crystalizing fact that healing from war is sometimes an impossible mission." Talia Lugacy co-wrote and directed the feature film "Descent" starring Rosario Dawson, which premiered in competition at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released theatrically by Warner Independent. Despite an NC-17 rating "Descent" was championed by The New York Times as "essential to see, a vividness never seen in an American film." Talia is a full-time Assistant Professor of Screen Studies at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School, in NYC. She is also a member of the Actors Studio Playwrights & Directors Unit, and began studying filmmaking at NYU Tisch at the age of 15. She has directed numerous short films as well as directed environmental PSAs with Frack Action, Water Defense, Mark Ruffalo and Food & Water Watch. Let me guess. It's a busy episode of #BTLRadioShow as we're talking Oscar nominations, plus. . . ALEXANDRA LORETH and KEVIN PONTUTI are live talking about their new film making its world premiere at the virtual Cinequest Film Festival, THE YELLOW WALLPAPER. Mesmerizing and hypnotic, the film dazzles with its meticulous and methodical sound design and rich cinematography. Take a listen as we dive into not only the excitement and anticipation of a world premiere but "the making of" THE YELLOW WALLPAPER, starting with the challenges of adapting this acclaimed gothic feminist horror story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman which essentially takes place in the mind of the protagonist, giving a fully tapestried identity to her, and then crafting meticulous tactical visuals that bring the story to life. In addition to discussing the stunning and metaphoric visual design both from a cinematographic and production design standpoint, we delve into the use of sound and the film's overall soundscape, all of which fuel the pacing as it progressively spirals into frenzied intensity. This is definitely one of my "Must See Films" of 2021! And then RYAN BARTON-GRIMLEY is back with us talking about one of my indie faves of 2020, HAWK & REV: VAMPIRE SLAYERS, which now has distribution and is available on VOD and DVD. While everyone will enjoy Ryan's neverending amiability and sense of humor, filmmakers, in particular, will appreciate some of Ryan's pearls of wisdom on making the "lo budget/no budget/micro budget" indie and the challenges to anticipate when trying to get the film to market. Some valuable lessons to be learned today. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Raj Krishna – The Reunited States of AmericaYes, Virginia (and the Other 49 States) – There IS a Sane and Sacred CenterAired Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with “Reunited States of America” Film Maker Raj Krishna“We need more visionaries and fewer divisionaries.” — Swami BeyondanandaIn the wake of the most contentious presidential election of our lifetime… there has indeed been an awakening. There has been a subtle yet world-changing shift toward what we are calling political climate change – warmer hearts and cooler heads. Even in selecting Biden over Trump, there was an affirmation of the politics of connection and collaboration over the politics of domination and separation. This politics of unity cannot pretend we all agree. Rather it involves finding ways to turn the dueling dualities of progressive and conservative into dynamic duo dance partners. In November, we interviewed transpartisan visionary and activist Mark Gerzon about a new documentary based on his book, The Reunited States Of America: How to Bridge The Partisan Divide.Mark served as a consulting producer and also appears in the film. It is directed by Ben Rekhi and produced by Raj Krishna. It features Steven Olikara, of the Millennial Action Project; Greg Orman, an independent politician who ran for Governor of Kansas in 2018; and David and Erin Leaverton, who took a road trip to all fifty states with their three kids in an RV in an effort to understand why our nation was hurting. The documentary was produced by Van Jones and Megan McCain, a Democrat and a Republican. The film was well-received both at the Cinequest Film Festival and the Atlanta DocuFest and the United Nations Association Film Festival. The film was released last month – we have a link on the Wiki Politiki page for this interview – and we are delighted to have the producer of that film, Raj Krishna, as our guest today.Raj Krishna is the founder of California Studios, a Silicon Valley-based development company focused on producing content exploring international stories and social justice issues. Raj sold his first short film My ‘Friend’ Mick to ShortsTV in 2019; his India-based film Knock Knock Knock was sold to Mubi in 2020; his directorial debut film Padmavyuha premiered as the opening night gala film at the International Indian Film Festival of Toronto (IIFFT) in August 2020; and his documentary project, The Reunited States, will be released in 2021.If you are curious about the bridges being built for cooperation, collaboration and functionality, please join us this Tuesday, February 16th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET.Watch the film here: https://reunitedstates.tv/watchWatch the FREE Red and Blue Carpet Premiere event here: https://youtu.be/gqEKXp7YiHMSupport Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In the “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! Welcome to Season 2 with Episode 2! Episodes 1 and 2 both released the same day all about the new film Groupers. Episode 1 featured the leading actress from Groupers and this episode follows with the screenwriter and director of the film-Anderson Cowan! Learn all about the making of the film and what Anderson's true intentions were while writing the script. Groupers is a film centers around two all-American high school jocks Brad and Dylan (Peter Mayer-Klepchick and Cameron Duckett) who are out for a night on the town when they are approached by the beautiful and seductive Meg (Nicole Dambro) at a local bar. Ready for what they hope will be a night to remember, the guys are subsequently kidnapped, drugged and awaken tied up face to face in an abandoned pool in the middle of nowhere. Absurdity and insanity ensue as we learn that Orin (Jesse Pudles), Meg’s overly flamboyant brother has been the target of Brad and Dylan’s homophobic bullying and that Meg is actually a grad student who plans to perform a psychological and somewhat sadistic experiment on them as part of her thesis, which poses the question, “is homosexuality a choice”.The Cinequest Film Festival referred to the film in its 2018 line up as “a rare, highly original, and super-charged dark comedy that will keep you guessing and contemplating the provocative, yet crucial themes at its essence”. On today's episode, I have Writer and Director Nathan Catucci. Nathan's first feature film, "Impossible Monsters", premiers this Satuday, March 9th at the Cinequest Film Festival in San Jose. I rarely go back and watch a film twice when prepping to record shows, but "Impossible Monsters" is such a fun, twisted thriller that I wanted to make sure that I didn't miss anything. "Impossible Monsters" follows an ambitious professor who gets caught up in the murder of a participant in his sleep study, as the line between dreams and reality blur. On the episode I talked with Nathan about about the idea for "Impossible Monsters" came about, dealing with his own sleep paralysis, the intense paitings in the film, how the production design fit in with the story, casting, and so much more. A huge Thanks to Nathan Catucci for taking the time to join me on the podcast. Make sure to follow "Impossible Monsters" on all of the sites listed at www.onthemicpodcast.com to know when it's playing near you. Don't miss it's premier this Saturday at Cinequest! Thanks, Nathan! Enjoy the episode.

Mining country in Appalachia has been declared The Devilʼs Playground. A close-knit group of veteran miners, all friends and family, commence what would bea normal dayʼs work -- except today a rookie, the son of one of our veterans and the god-son of the Section Leader, joins them, 18 year-old Ryan. With ever-growing safety concerns at the mine, Zeke (Section Leader and long time coal mining veteran), struggles with the correct course of action, weighing on one hand the safety of his men, and on the other, the need to earn a steady wage in an economically depressed region. Today, however, fate takes matters into its own hands when a huge methane explosion rips through the mine. Smoke engulfs the men, forcing them to rely on nothing more than, brains, brawn and faulty self-rescuers (oxygen tanks that afford them one hour of air). MINE 9 is the story of the struggle for survival against all odds; men trapped in hell as the result of exploitation, greed and circumstance. I'm horrible, I'm never going to get through this," and I'll get up and I'll walk away and literally a minute later I'll be like, "Oh!" and I'll come back in and have an idea. It's just a matter of just leaving that space for a second." • Geeta Malik on Twitter • Shetani Films • 2016 Nicholl Screenwriting Awards: Geeta Malik • 2016 Nicholl Live Read: “Dinner with Friends” • Austin Film Festival // Pulling Your Hair Out is produced and hosted by Richard Lowe.
