Sip, share, shape our podcast! It's hot in Texas so what better way to beat the heat than to take a trip to visit wineries in Marlborough. New Zealand that is. The Marlborough wine region is booming and going beyond Sauvignon Blanc. Cellar doors offer tastings and tours of some of the best wines from NZ. The family estate of Te Whare Ra is our stop on today's episode just a minute drive outside of Blenheim.  If you think New Zealand wine is a one-trick pony, tune in as Anna Flowerday takes us on a tour of aromatic whites from Pinot Gris to Gewurztraminer. In the cellar door overlooking Te Whare Ra's vineyards, Anna guides us through their thoughtfully curated collection of wine. We start with Rosé and finish with Pinot Noir, but the aromatic whites in between may just be the stars of the show.  In addition to Te Whare Ra, we visited legendary wineries from Cloudy Bay to Mahi in the Blenheim area of the Wairau Valley. Marlborough wineries should be on your wine tours and travel wish list. And don't forget the other wine regions of New Zealand from Central Otago and Canterbury in the south to Hawke's Bay and Auckland in the north. Each winery is unique and has its own story to tell about New Zealand wine. And the food you'll find takes everything next level!Happy 4th of July and don't forget to let us know how much you're enjoying every episode by COMMENTING on your fave podcast platform! Thanks for joining Somm Women Talk Wine! May 7th is Sauvignon Blanc day but we'll be celebrating all week! Join the Wine Thieves at ground zero for new world sauvignon blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand. John and Sara explore its rise to prominence from the first plantings in the 1970s, through to its explosion on the international scene in the 1990s, and now to the current ‘third wave' (a good third wave, that is) of producers that are breaking rules and leading the country in new stylistic directions.Joining the discussion is James Healy, co-founder with Ivan Sutherland, of Dog Point wines in Marlborough. James was chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay in the  1990s before striking out on his own, and thus really was at ground zero of the New Zealand and Marlborough sauvignon blanc international explosion that occurred in the mid-1990s.  He tells us about a new initiative called Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) and its importance and gaining prominence. We're also joined by Matt Deller, Master of Wine and Chief Global Sales & Marketing Officer for the Villa Maria group founded by Sir George Fistonich in the middle of last century in Auckland. 'Villa', as it's known,  has grown to be one of the larger and most admired players in the NZ wine industry, and Matt discusses the company's commitment to organics and sub-appellations. In the final segment of the show, the Thieves welcome Erica Crawford of Loveblock winery and the co-creator, with husband Kim, of the hugely successful Kim Crawford brand,  which they sold a decade and a half ago to Constellation Brands. Erica falls in love with sauvignon all over again making wines in the style she loves to drink,  shares insight into the rapid commercial success of New Zealand sauvignon blanc, praises Lord of the Rings, and reveals how high grade tea powder might just change winemaking for the better.  Grab a well chilled glass of crunchy sauvignon and settle in to a great discussion. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is one of the wine world's most dramatic success stories. It went from zero to hero in the 1980s and 1990s, stunning the world with its uniquely extrovert character, and paving the way for an entire nation's wine fortunes to be revolutionised. Some people are a bit snobby about Kiwi Sauvignon - too easy, too obvious, too samey, they say. But the truth is that Sauvignon can be every bit as diverse, complex, age-worthy and fine as other great white grape varieties. In this episode we take a very DEEP dive into the subject, exploring in our longest episode to date what (and where) Sauvignon is, before moving onto its story in New Zealand - from virtual unknown to spearheading a wine revolution in New Zealand and now offering a range of styles that speak of regionality, winemaking diversity and (whisper it) fun. We chat to James Healy (formerly of Cloudy Bay and Dog Point, now ABEL in Nelson), research scientist Dr Wendy Parr, Yealands chief winemaker Natalie Christensen, and wine merchant and restaurateur Melanie Brown. We also taste our way through an array of Sauvignons, from low alcohol to blush, from classic to new wave styles, from the young to the old via the elegantly oaked. Salmon ceviche and monkfish with asparagus risotto are on our table and we talk about other dishes too. This is a sponsored episode in partnership with New Zealand Winegrowers, who are kindly offering a prize of 6 bottles of the Sauvignons we highlight in this episode to one lucky winner. You just have to tell us what your favourite accompaniment to Sauvignon is - food, music, occasion, person, etc - by Friday 14th May 2021.

I told my graphic designer, Miranda Nelson, that the St Patrick’s Day show would be the 500th episode of the podcast. She thought about it and came back and asked, “would you mind if I collected some audio feedback from some of the artists on the show.” I said,” sure! That sounds great!” I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect much of a response. But I remembered that she suggested this when I started compiling this 500th episode. She forwarded me some feedback via email. I looked through them and didn’t see any audio. “Oh well,” I thought. “Less than I expected, but that’s fine.” Then I noticed one band mentioned something about including audio in their email. But I never got that. So I emailed and asked Miranda where that audio was. Her response, “it’s in the folder you set up on Google Drive.” Oh yeah! I did do that, didn’t I? I opened up the folder and was floored to find over 60 recordings by Celtic bands wishing me a  happy 500th episode. Wow! Ye know a couple pieces are easy to pop into an episode. But I didn’t think about how to include ALL OF THESE pieces? So what should I do for this show? Instead of me introducing bands and songs, I’m gonna let the artists do it themselves. I will play their congratulations as a way of introducing their music. Course that means if you want to find out the name of the song or tune, you will need to visit the shownotes at CelticMusicPodcast.com or just check your podcatcher. Because each track has a time stamp so you can easily look it up. That said, I’ll have a few moments to break up the music and say hi. But for the most part this is just music and congratulations. The Vincast - a wine podcast with The Intrepid Wino

Though initially interested in the study of horticulture, after being introduced to wine, Jim White very quickly transferred to viticulture. After a few years he gained employment near where he grew up, managing the vineyard on the headquarters of Chandon Australia in the Yarra Valley. His next step was to take the Viticulturist position at sister winery Cape Mentelle, on the opposite side of the country no less, in Margaret River. Finally Jim relocated to Cloudy Bay in New Zealand, where he now has the position of Technical Director.

A special three-part series of the Women Who Travel podcast, presented by Cloudy Bay This is a special Friday episode of the Women Who Travel podcast and the second installment in our three-part I Deserve This series, presented by Cloudy Bay. Designed to celebrate all the ways we treat ourselves when we travel, we hope to dispel the feelings of selfishness and guilt that often come with spending time and money on our own adventures and dreams. Kat Mason, Cloudy Bay's wine communications manager, knows those feelings: after falling in love with New Zealand on a four-week wine fellowship, she returned back to the U.K. in 2013, homesick for a place she had only just visited and feeling guilt over her lack of enthusiasm to return home. Pushing past those feelings, though, she made the jump with her then-four-year-old daughter and moved more than halfway across the world for a slower pace of life—exactly one year after her visit. We sat down with Kat to find out more about living abroad, how she prioritizes herself and her daughter on the road, her most memorable wine trips, and the importance of self-care on vacation.  Follow Kat: @thewinekat Follow Lale: @lalehannah Follow Meredith: @ohheytheremere Follow Women Who Travel: @womenwhotravel Learn more about your ad choices. Kat Mason is the Wine Communications Manager for Cloudy Bay - probably the best job title ever. She promises it's not all glamorous but when she describes sipping something chilled and sparkling whilst in helicopter passing over glaciers you can't help but feel she might be lying a bit. She's an old friend of mine from university and her passion for grapes was borne there when she saw an opportunity to get a free ticket to the best party of the year (and the most expensive) St John's College May Ball by being the drinks' officer for the event. From that first tasting she was hooked and the business has taken her from the leafy subarbs of Essex to the dramatic landscapes of New Zealand where she now lives with her daughter and boyfriend. In this episode we talk about the rise of women in the wine business, a notoriously closed gentlemen's club in the past; the debate around natural wine and her recommendations for delicious tipples for Summer.  More about Kat: After university she decided she wanted to work in wine. She went to London to work and put myself through my initial wine exams but was made redundant and ended up living back at home in Essex and working for a local company there. That ended up being the best decision she had ever made because her time at Lay & Wheeler Wines was a grounding in all aspects of the business. She won a scholarship to travel to Marlborough in New Zealand and over the course of three weeks fell in love with the region and the industry. A year later she moved her husband, daughter and life to New Zealand to work for the Seresin Estate founded by Michael Seresin, a Director of Photography who's work includes Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Harry Potter - The Prisoner of Azkaban and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes who is a passionate advocate of organic, natural, biodynamic wines.  In September 2017 she joined Cloudy Bay.

This week on the “Marketing Today” podcast, Alan talks with Mark Ritson, adjunct professor of marketing at the Melbourne Business School, who also runs the Mini MBA in marketing program in collaboration with Marketing Week, and writes for Marketing Week as well. Ritson has worked globally as a private marketing consultant for esteemed clients like Baxter, Loewe, McKinsey, PepsiCo, Subaru, Eli Lilly, Donna Karan, Westpac, Shiseido, Flight Centre, Johnson & Johnson, De Beers, Sephora, Benefit, Amgen, Ericsson, Jurlique, Cloudy Bay, Unilever, KPMG and WD40. If that wasn’t enough powerful impact, Mark Ritson also spent 13 years as the in-house professor for LVMH, the world's largest luxury group that handles brands like Louis Vuitton, Dom Perignon, and Hennessy. Ritson uses his enriched wealth of information and his sharp sense of humor to talk about how he has actually incorporated Marketing Today itself into the Mini MBA program, but with one missing piece – the often misunderstood industry topic of brand diagnosis. If you are a fan of the Effie Awards like Alan Hart and Mark Ritson are, you will enjoy hearing what Ritson has learned during the course of his extensive Effie research. Also, find out why Mark Ritson is getting really excited about the idea of “post-digital marketing,” and why Mark feels you are currently listening to the best marketing podcast in the world.  Ritson shares his valuable brand understanding: “You have to go to the place where the brand was born,” says Ritson. “You split up brand management into three distinct slices, the first part diagnosis, the next strategy, the final part tactics.” Ritson goes on to say, “Target customers really want purpose.”  Highlights from this “Marketing Today” conversation include: Mark Ritson shares what he has been working on with Marketing Today. (01:58) How should people go about diagnosing their brand? (04:44) Mark shares his take on social listening with Twitter as an example. (09:40) Why is it so hard to get CMOs to talk about how to manage brands? (11:25) After brand diagnosis, should the next step be positioning the brand or defining its core purpose? (13:49) Brands can support a multitude of causes while also turning a profit. (16:55) Purpose watching is, unfortunately, being used as a smokescreen by some companies that aren’t living up to their claimed behavior. (19:58) What has Mark learned from his research about the Effie Awards? (22:21) What is the difference between distinctiveness and differentiation? (25:47) The biggest ROI factor is that you already have scale. (27:37) Why aren’t we discussing whether media quality is any good or not? (28:55) Why is Mark Ritson so excited about “post-digital marketing?” (30:54) Has there been an experience in Mark’s past that made him who he is today? (34:07) Is there any advice that Mark would give to his younger self? (37:03) What is the most absurd thing that Mark is thinking about now? (37:56) Where does Mark get most of his information?
