In this Short Talk episode Judith Germain speaks to Julianna Newland on gender dynamics in workplace performance management. Julianna advises that women need to be proactive in promoting and marketing themselves, finding opportunities to demonstrate their capabilities, and ensuring their managers are aware of their skills and accomplishments. She also suggests that women seek out mentors, especially at higher levels, who can help advocate for them. Key Takeaways Women face unique challenges in performance management, often lacking equal promotion opportunities Male managers tend to promote men more, while female managers promote more equitably Women must actively self-advocate and seek mentorship to overcome workplace barriers Employers should drive gender balance from the top-down, reinforced by HR and line management In this conversation Judith and Julianna focus on how men and women tend to interact differently in the workplace, particularly when it comes to performance management. Pat notes that women often face unique challenges, such as not being given the same opportunities as men to showcase their skills and be promoted. She cites a Harvard study showing that male managers are more likely to promote other men. Julianna Newland has more than 30 years in the management/executive field with 24 years for a Fortune 500 company. There's an athlete right now that uses, knows and loves your product. So why aren't you partnering with them to promote your brand? The global sports sponsorship market is expected to grow to almost $108 billion by 2030.And there's around $1.3B in projected revenue this year from pro women athlete sponsorships. Feel like you're missing out yet? The message is clear: sponsor a pro woman athlete (or two). In this episode, we're talking about B2B marketing lessons from professional women athlete sponsorships with the help of our special guest, PARITY CEO Leela Srinivasan.Together, we talk about experimenting with new channels, finding your match, and much more.About our guest, Leela SrinivasanLeela Srinivasan took the reins as CEO in May 2023, when Parity had amassed a network of over 800 women athletes and paid out over $2 million in sponsorships. Under her leadership, the company is poised to increase both numbers exponentially – and become a household name – as it enters its next phase in the fight against gender pay disparity in sports.Prior to joining Parity, Leela served as Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) for three-high-growth companies: digital payments provider Checkout.com; Momentive, the maker of SurveyMonkey; and recruiting software company Lever. She developed her initial passion for community, customer centricity and data-driven marketing earlier in her marketing career at LinkedIn and OpenTable. She serves on the board of Upwork and on the board of advisors for the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, where she earned her MBA.Leela lives in North Carolina with her husband Joel and three middle-school girls. There are no dull moments. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Pro Women Athlete Sponsorships:Experiment with new channels. Keep a budget to try new things. Whether it's simply posting to a different social channel or sponsoring a pro athlete, the Leela says, ”As a marketer, your livelihood depends on being able to find new channels to replace channels that were once working really well that suddenly stopped working, to find ways to stand out from your competitors. Because what happens is if you're doing one thing, then six months later, everyone else is probably trying to do it too. So you have to keep things fresh. It doesn't mean you have to devote your entire budget to experimentation, of course. You need to certainly put money where you know things are working, but over time that mix is going to change as a marketer. And so I think it's smart. It's actually self preservation in some ways, to keep trying to just find ways to experiment on the edges and tap into something that can really give you a fresh perspective in the market.”Find your match. There's an athlete out there right now who would align strongly with your brand values. Use them as the face of your brand to humanize the name. Leela says, “Find something that really feels right for the brand and allows them to kind of carve out their own space. There are so many directions that you can now run in; New leagues springing up, new sports coming to the fore, new athletes with incredibly interesting stories.Quotes*”When you get those people, those athletes, those influencers talking very naturally about something that they find joy in or that they believe in, it's just another level of awesomeness when it comes to ambassadorship or testimonial.”*”There are so many stories waiting to be told. If you're willing to be creative about the types of athlete that you work with, there are always athletes that can be within budget that can do some incredible storytelling for you.”*”I always had some money in what I called my rainy day fund or my slush fund. That budget was mine to make discretionary investments where I wanted to try things, where maybe the ROI was less proven or the path was a little less trodden but it was worth the opportunity, worth that risk to try something different because, God forbid you just become this terrible vanilla marketer that is doing the same as everybody else. You have to find ways to break through. I mean, that's the fun part of marketing. Why wouldn't you? So I always had some experimentation budget just tucked away for when these types of opportunities came up.”Time Stamps[0:55] Meet Leela Srinivasan, CEO at PARITY[2:03] Leela's Journey to PARITY[5:17] Understanding Pro Women Athlete Sponsorships[9:55] History of Pro Women Athlete Sponsorships[14:27] Current Landscape and Opportunities[24:07] The Gender Disparity in Sports[24:51] The Influence of Women Athletes on Marketing[27:00] Creative Campaigns and Athlete Partnerships[28:16] The Importance of Originality in Marketing[29:56] Investing in Women's Sports[32:38] Engaging with Brands and Athletes[35:37] The Power of Authentic Athlete EndorsementsLinksConnect with Leela on LinkedInLearn more about PARITYAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Jon Rosser, Chair of the Single Homeless Project, on the systemic undercounting of women experiencing homelessness. Overview: In this eye-opening episode of the Do One Better Podcast, Alberto Lidji sits down with Jon Rosser, Chair of the Single Homeless Project, to delve into the pressing issue of homelessness in the UK, with a particular focus on the systemic undercounting of women experiencing homelessness. Key Discussion Points: Introduction to SHP: The Single Homeless Project operates in London, supporting homeless individuals or those at risk of homelessness. Founded by a group of homeless people 40 years ago, SHP has grown to support over 10,000 individuals annually with a dedicated staff of 700. Current State of Homelessness in the UK: Despite various interventions, homelessness numbers are rising due to housing shortages, affordability issues, and inadequate social housing. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic showed that it is possible to house everyone if the will and resources are available. Gender Disparity in Homelessness Counts: Traditional counting methods underreport the number of homeless women, who often avoid streets due to vulnerability and safety concerns. A new gender-informed approach reveals a much higher number of homeless women, many of whom resort to dangerous alternatives to sleeping on the streets. Challenges Faced by Homeless Women: Many homeless women face domestic violence, mental health issues, and the need for safe, gender-specific accommodation. There is a significant gap in the support services provided to these women, who often fall through the cracks of traditional systems. Policy Implications and Recommendations: The need for more accurate counting methods and gender-aware policies to ensure homeless women receive adequate support. Advocacy for increased women-only accommodations and better safety measures in mixed facilities. Encouraging local authorities and philanthropists to invest in resources for a comprehensive homeless count and support services. Jon Rosser's Journey: From social housing to international work with Voluntary Service Overseas and Save the Children, Jon's career has been dedicated to addressing housing and homelessness issues. Now, as Chair of SHP, Jon continues his mission to support vulnerable populations, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to tackling homelessness. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has taken steps to accelerate the processing of software and hardware vulnerabilities in the National Vulnerability Database by awarding a new contract to an outside vendor. This move aims to clear the backlog of unanalyzed vulnerabilities by the end of the fiscal year, demonstrating a commitment to cybersecurity. However, amidst this positive development, the closure of the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) poses a threat to internet access for nearly 60 million low-income Americans. The lack of funding has led to the discontinuation of the program, leaving many households in financial distress. Efforts to extend the program through bipartisan legislation have stalled, highlighting the importance of government support in ensuring equitable access to essential services. On the cybersecurity front, the dismantling of the 911 S5 proxy botnet, the world's largest, and the arrest of its administrator in Singapore, Yun-Hee Wang, showcases international efforts to combat cybercrime. Looking back, I think we can all recognize and appreciate the role that our parents played in shaping who we are. But have you ever thought about the impact you had on your parents, how they view themselves and others? For this episode, we're going to turn the tables and take a look at the role that children can have on shaping and influencing their parents, specifically, how having daughters can shape how men view and interact with women in the workplace, especially men in leadership roles. This is also known as the daughter effect. I'm thrilled to introduce Zhiyan “Z” Wu with Erasmus University and Lucia Naldi with Jönköping University, who collaborated with their fellow authors on a study recently published in the INFORMS journal Management Science titled “Learning from Their Daughters: Family Exposure to Gender Disparity and Female Representation in Male-Led Ventures.”

In a recent report conducted by Tern Bicycles, the state of diversity within the cycling industry has been brought to the forefront. The findings reveal a stark gender disparity, with men predominantly occupying the majority of roles in the cycling sector. Shockingly, women represent a mere 8% of bike workshop roles and 19% of customer-facing positions, reflecting a significant underrepresentation in these crucial areas of the industry. Delving deeper into the gender dynamics, the report notes that women fare slightly better in administrative roles, holding 40% of such positions. However, despite this presence, the progression to senior leadership roles remains limited for women within the cycling industry. This raises questions about the systemic barriers that may hinder the upward mobility of women in this field. Moreover, the report sheds light on the ethnic diversity gap in cycling participation. Among urban ethnic minority groups, a staggering 74% do not currently engage in cycling, despite 55% expressing a desire to start. This underscores a notable disparity between interest and actual participation, pointing to potential barriers that prevent certain communities from fully embracing cycling. In response to these findings, we turn to Adriana Atencio, the Executive Director of The Common Wheel in Lancaster City. As an expert in the field and a leader in an organization dedicated to promoting biking accessibility, Atencio brings a valuable perspective to the conversation. Her insights could provide a nuanced understanding of the challenges faced by women in the cycling industry, as well as shed light on initiatives aimed at addressing the ethnic diversity gap in cycling participation. The Tern Bicycles report serves as a call to action for the cycling industry to address these disparities head-on. Achieving gender and ethnic diversity within the sector not only fosters a more inclusive environment but also unlocks untapped potential for growth and innovation. With Adriana Atencio joining the discussion, there is an opportunity to explore practical solutions and strategies that can be implemented to create a more equitable and accessible future for cycling enthusiasts across diverse communities.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This study shows that when it comes to music, an artist has a very limited time to get us hooked, and we think you'll be surprised as to how much that time actually is. We'll also update you on the topic of AI in music and who actually owns the final product and also some news about Ticketmaster blatantly showing their greed. Then we need to discuss the crazy disparity between men and women in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a story about Joan Jett feeding sleazy men her actual piss.Support the showSign-up for our weekly newsletter!https://allpunkedup.com/subscribe Are you a fan of the scene and want to be a guest on the pod? We're back for another installment of the “22 Lessons on Ethics and Technology” special series. In this week's episode of the series, I am joined by Dr. Mar Hicks. This episode tells the story of labor and gender discrimination in the tech industry. Dr. Hicks explains the historical background of gendered technological production that has influenced the development of computing. In her historical outline, she explains that while women were a hidden engine of growth in high technology from World War II to the 1960s, American and British computing in the 1970s experienced a gender flip, becoming male-identified in the 1960s and 1970s. What can this history teach us about the need for gender equity in technological production now? And what are the consequences of continued gender inequity for our future? Professor Mar Hicks is a historian of technology, gender, and labor, specializing in the history of computing. Dr. Hicks's book, Programmed Inequality (MIT Press, 2017) investigates how Britain lost its early lead in computing by discarding the majority of their computer workers and experts--simply because they were women. Dr. Hicks's current project looks at transgender citizens' interactions with the computerized systems of the British welfare state in the 20th century, and how these computerized systems determined whose bodies and identities were allowed to exist. Hicks's work studies how collective understandings of progress are defined by competing discourses of social value and economic productivity, and how technologies often hide regressive ideals while espousing "revolutionary" or "disruptive" goals. Dr. Hicks is also co-editing a volume on computing history called Your Computer Is On Fire (MIT Press, 2020). Dr. Hicks runs the Digital History Lab at Illinois Tech.

This week I pay tribute to International Women's Day by sharing some of my own thoughts, observations, and experience of gender disparity. I am primarily focusing on the experience of working mothers in this podcast, as this is what I can talk to. I can’t speak on behalf of all women’s experiences, just my own experience, and observations. But I do know there are many commonalities in my own experience and numerous other women I have spoken to. I draw on the research of Professor Linda Scott in her recent publication, The Double X Economy, and from the writing of Melinda Gate's The Moment of Lift to highlight how my experience is not unique, but there are so many parallels between working mother's experiences globally. How women around the world carry the parental load and often fall behind in their career trajectory for the greater good of their children and family. And yet the world over, we don't recognise, celebrate or fully appreciate this unpaid care work. TOPICS INCLUDE:The insanity of motherhood in the 21st century for working women Current society and workplace has been slow to adapt to the changing needs of employees with young families Our childcare routines for full-time working parents are just not conducive to a healthy family lifestyleBusy, tired mothers of young children do not have the time or energy to be at the decision-making tables (in their current format) There is currently less than 25% female representation in the Irish Government When women leave their work to raise children, they lose their financial independence and become economically vulnerable Insufficient recognition or remuneration for care work carried out in our societyWe need to challenge archaic systems and modes of operation that no longer serve all of societyThe provision of a state-funded, quality childcare system for all children would help achieve gender parityEqual partnership with a similar division of labour is as good for romantic partnerships as it is for a business relationship RESOURCES INCLUDE:The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World by Melinda Gates: https://www.amazon.com/Moment-Lift-Empowering-Women-Changes-ebook/dp/B07FCJPWSTThe Double X Economy by Professor Linda Scott: https://www.doublexeconomy.com/_______________________________________________________Subscribe to YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/3jLTdaqRate & review Journeying podcast on iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/ie/podcast/journeying/id1529912826Like Facebook Page: https://bit.ly/33kp4bUVisit the Journeying website: https://journeying.me/Instagram: @journeyingpodcast

It outlines a continuing gender disparity among the 20 most-played songs by Irish artists on Irish stations between June 24th and December 24th, 2020. On today’s podcast, Roisin Ingle speaks to activist and Why Not Her? founder Linda Coogan-Byrne about the report’s findings, where improvements have been made and what she believes needs to be done to achieve greater gender and racial diversity on Irish Radio. The hugely successful singer-songwriter RuthAnne also gives her reaction to the report and describes her own experience as an artist trying to break through what she describes as the “lad sound” on Irish Radio. Later in the show, we speak to Marin Alsop, a groundbreaking orchestra conductor considered to be one of the best in the world. Marin was recently a guest tutor on the National Concert Hall's award-winning Female Conductor Programme. Our co-producer Jennifer Ryan caught up with her afterwards.

Women represent private parties in civil litigation just 18.5% of the time in New York according to a New York State Bar Association report released earlier this month. Judge Shira Scheindlin backed up those findings during a recent podcast recording: “what I witnessed in the courtroom was a great gender disparity in privately retained counsel.” Judge Scheindlin, a former Federal District Court Judge, was one of the members of the task force that prepared the report. Last week she also published, “Female Lawyers Can Talk, Too” an op-ed about the report that ran in The New York Times and clearly struck a nerve; it received 274 comments before the Times closed commenting. Earlier this week, Josh Block travelled to Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, the law firm where Scheindlin is Of Counsel, to record this podcast interview with her about the report, her own career experiences, and her thoughts about the continued disparity and gender imbalance in big law. The pay gap is not about gender disparity. It’s a part of our history, and it’s the result of the choices we made for our survival. On this episode, we’re talking with Warren Farrell who has been chosen as one of the world’s top 100 Thought Leaders by The Financial Times. He talks about the pay gap and explains how it isn’t between men and women, but between mothers and fathers. According to him, that is changing now that there is more flexibility for men and women to take on the traditional roles of the opposite sex. This leads to better performance on the job, and it also benefits their children. Get all the resources for this episode and listen to more at https://www.thrivinglaunch.com
