President Trump says Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a 20 point peace deal. More than a week into the government shutdown, the parties are largely digging into the same messages about what should happen next. And ICE continues arrest operations in Chicago while National Guard troops from Texas are positioned outside the city, despite a lawsuit by the state and city to block the deployment.Want more comprehensive analysis of the most important news of the day, plus a little fun? Israel Hamas Peace Deal Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire and peace plan proposed by President Donald Trump. The agreement was reportedly signed in Egypt, with multiple Arab nations participating in mediation (Qatar, Egypt, Turkey). Hostage releases are a central part of the deal, including both living captives and the return of bodies of those killed since the October 7, 2023 attacks. Trump is quoted extensively, describing this as a “historic” moment and promising a new era of peace in Gaza. The document includes reactions from families of hostages, marked by emotional gratitude toward Trump. Trump’s remarks on rebuilding Gaza and establishing a “Council of Peace” suggest a broader reconstruction initiative funded by wealthy Middle Eastern nations. The final section shifts into Trump’s domestic commentary, highlighting supposed successes in reducing crime in Washington, D.C., and comparing local peace and safety efforts to the broader Middle East peace vision. On Wednesday's Mark Levin Show, the insurrection act has been used at least 20 times starting in 1808. President Trump has to use it because we have Democrats who refuse to follow the law. Right now, we have a Democrat party usurping the Constitution. Governors and cities are not in charge of immigration. They don't have the power to prevent ICE from doing their job. Also, former FBI Director James Comey is a serial liar, leaker, and scoundrel who absconded with government documents, interfered in the 2016 election more than foreign powers, and brought disrepute to the FBI. Comey belongs in court and is lucky to avoid charges for other unethical acts. The democrat talking point is that acting US attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia prosecuting the Comey case has no prosecutorial experience. But in 1961, President John Kennedy nominated his 35-year-old brother, Robert, to be attorney general. RFK had no state or federal courtroom experience of any kind. The Democrat controlled Senate confirmed him. Later, Trump announces that “Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan. This means that ALL of the Hostages will be released very soon, and Israel will withdraw their Troops to an agreed upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace. All Parties will be treated fairly!” The broad parameters of the deal sound very good. Rep Mike Lawler calls in to discuss the first phase of the Gaza peace plan. Trump has worked tirelessly to get the hostages home, but Hamas cannot remain in power. Lawler also discusses his confrontation with Rep Hakeem Jeffries over the government shutdown. In September, after the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum you may not have heard very much about – an action that could put your right to hold your political perspectives at risk. National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, or N-S-P-M 7, is a memorandum that redirects the full force of the country's national security establishment to pursue what White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said was “leftwing terrorism.” So to explain more about N-S-P-M 7 and what it means for all of us, we spoke to Ken Klippenstein. He's an independent journalist who has been covering national security for over a decade. And in headlines, Israel and Hamas agree to the first phase of a peace plan, President Donald Trump vows to dismantle ANTIFA, and the price of gold is at an all-time high.Show Notes:Check out Ken's work – https://www.kenklippenstein.com/Call Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Rep. Ro Khanna joins the Beast's Joanna Coles to reveal what he calls Washington's most dangerous cover-up. The California congressman explains how the Epstein files hold explosive information and why his bipartisan effort to release them has been stonewalled during the government shutdown. Jason Kander and Ravi Gupta break down the escalating tensions in Chicago and Portland as President Trump federalizes the National Guard and local leaders push back. They discuss Illinois Governor JB Pritzker's sharp rebuke of Trump's actions, Pam Bondi's inflammatory comments about Portland officials, and how the president's militarization strategy could intimidate voters ahead of the midterms. Kander and Gupta also react to a bizarre Fox News segment featuring Stephen Miller and a troubling Trump clip on Vietnam and Afghanistan, before examining new reporting on the administration's legally dubious “narco-terrorist” operations in Venezuela. Plus, they debate Democratic strategy on the government shutdown, from stalled negotiations to uncertainty over back pay for federal workers, and unpack Pam Bondi's disastrous Senate testimony as she clashes with Adam Schiff and other lawmakers. Blame on Democrats: The term “Schumer Shutdown” is updated to “Schumer–Hakeem Jeffries Shutdown.” Jeffries is criticized for rejecting a one-year ACA subsidy extension that could have reopened the government. The commentary accuses Democrats of “orchestrating” the shutdown for political leverage. Defense of Republicans and Trump: Quotes from Donald Trump emphasize his claim of a “landslide victory” and frame the shutdown as a “kamikaze attack” by Democrats. The narrative presents Trump as calm and proactive despite the crisis, promising “good things are going to happen.” Impact on Ordinary Americans: Focuses on economic and emotional stress caused by the shutdown — e.g., furloughed federal workers and air traffic controllers missing paychecks. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is quoted describing strain on workers and air travel disruptions (notably in Burbank, CA). Criticism of ACA Costs: The Affordable Care Act is described as “never affordable,” with claims that premiums could increase by over $10,000 a month. Democrats are accused of demanding excessive funding to maintain ACA subsidies. Political Spin and Language: The rhetoric is strongly partisan, labeling Democrats as “radical,” “orchestrating pain,” and calling some “MAGA extremists.” The tone aligns with right-leaning political media, highlighting grievances against Democratic leaders while emphasizing Republican resolve. Tommy & Ben sound the alarm about how Trump is laying the foundation for war with Venezuela—breaking down the administration's justifications, what escalation could look like, and why attacking Venezuela won't solve America's drug problem. Then, they discuss the latest negotiations between Israel and Hamas over Trump's Gaza “peace plan,” Israel's treatment of activists arrested from the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, an update from journalist Noa Avishag Schnall, who's currently sailing to Gaza with another flotilla, and the United States' unprecedented security agreement with Qatar. Also covered: how MAGA is advocating for an El Salvador-style judicial takeover, Russia's “hybrid war” on Europe and its shadow fleet of decrepit oil tankers, and the over-the-hill rock stylings of Argentina's embattled president, Javier Milei. Finally, Tommy speaks with Michael Froman, president of the Council on Foreign Relations and former U.S. Trade Representative under Obama, about Trump's trade “strategy,” the death of the rules-based system of global commerce, and why the humble soybean has become a flashpoint in the trade wars. For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. Earlier this year, a tweet went out from the official account of the Democratic Party, tagging the Trump advisor Stephen Miller. It was an image of what appeared to be a simple hotel room chair. But for those in the know, it was much more than that: It was a “cuck chair,” an online meme straight out of a popular genre of hardcore pornography in which a man watches his partner have sex with another man. How did we get to a place where the Democrats could flame a political opponent with an image out of cucking porn and have millions of people immediately understand it? In this episode we trace the complicated and intricate history of the cuck. It's a history that includes everything from Jacobean dramas to World War II pilots to, yes, pornography, as well as a host of deeply American prejudices that have become a lot less submerged over the last 10 years. And we also situate the cuck within a larger context, one in which porn is the elephant in the room of American culture. It's a potent force, shaping and reflecting our very wants and desires and it is constantly seeping into mainstream culture—and yet we don't analyze, critique, or even talk about it very much because, well, it's porn. In this NSFW episode, you'll hear from: Slate staff writer Luke Winkie who wrote about the tweet that kicked this episode off; Samantha Cole, one of co-founders of 404 Media and the author of How Sex Changed the Internet and the Internet Changed Sex; Jennifer Panek, professor of English at the University of Ottawa; sex therapist and clinical psychologist Dr. David S. On Tuesday's Mark Levin Show, the West is committing suicide through weakness, appeasement, and open borders, allowing a fusion of Marxists and Islamists to exploit democratic systems via immigration. It is very important that we get the hostages out of Gaza, but it's also important that Hamas is destroyed, because they will come back again. It is an ideology that doesn't die, and the West doesn't understand the ideology, or people in the West don't want to deal with it. Anti-Semitism is spreading in Western capitals, including New York. It's a gut cancer and President Trump is the only Western leader fighting it through actions on colleges, funding, and preventing U.S. decline like Britain and France. Also, on the second anniversary of Hamas's October 7 attack Zohran Mamdani accused Prime Minister Netanyahu of launching a genocidal war in Gaza. Mamdani is a Marxist Islamist who camouflages his Hamas-loving agenda under civil liberties rhetoric. Mamdani is silent on Muslim-on-Muslim violence in Syria, Yemen, and Lebanon by groups like Hezbollah. Later Jim Trusty calls in to discuss the lenient 97-month sentence given to Nichola Roske for attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in June 2022. The Biden-appointed Judge Paula Xinis Boardman showed bias by factoring in Roske's transgender identity and leftist politics, imposing a term far below the 360-month-to-life guidelines. This kid glove treatment sets a dangerous precedent that could encourage copycat ideological attacks on constitutional figures. Trusty also criticizes lawfare tactics in Portland, where local officials submit polished affidavits claiming no need for the National Guard amid riots, downplaying issues like lasers and guillotines near ICE headquarters. Finally, Speaker Mike Johnson calls in to explain that the Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer, are using a government shutdown as a distraction and red herring to provide Schumer political cover against potential challenges from figures like AOC. The health care subsidy issue is a fabricated fight, as it was a COVID-era policy set to expire December 31 by Democrats themselves. Learn more about your ad choices. The new Supreme Court term started on Monday, and the justices have a lot on their plates. They'll be deciding a host of big issues in the coming months – including if Trump can fire board members of the Federal Reserve and whether his tariff policy is overstepping presidential authority. But first, on Tuesday, the court heard arguments in Chiles v. Salazar, a case focused on whether conversion talk-therapy for minors is protected by the First Amendment. So, for more on this Supreme Court term and what we can expect, we spoke to Kate Shaw, co-host of Crooked Media's Strict Scrutiny and a law professor at the University of Pennsylvania. And in headlines, National Guard troops arrive at an Army training center outside of Chicago, Attorney General Pam Bondi avoids questions from Democratic lawmakers, and more terrible news for furloughed federal workers.Show Notes:Check out Strict Scrutiny – https://tinyurl.com/7dfbhmc5Call Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. The criminal indictment of the Trump Organization puts Donald Trump squarely in the crosshairs of legal jeopardy. But a wounded Trump is still a dangerous Trump; creating a new urgency to jumpstart his political life and remain viable as a candidate. He won't run because he's afraid to lose. But as long as his MAGA base thinks he'll run, the more money he can raise. In addition, he can claim that the DA is only coming after him as a political vendetta. But to remain viable, Trump must appeal to an extremist base that is more prone to conspiracy thinking, violence, racism and hatred. All of this was on display last weekend at his first public rally and will only intensify as his legal troubles mount. More To The Story: OpenAI became the world's most valuable private company last week after a stock deal pushed the value of the artificial intelligence developer to $500 billion. But when OpenAI was founded a decade ago, the company's approach to artificial intelligence wasn't taken seriously in Silicon Valley. Tech journalist Karen Hao has been covering OpenAI's astounding rise for years and recently wrote a book about the company, Empire of AI: Dreams and Nightmares in Sam Altman's OpenAI. She says that while many in Silicon Valley warn of AI's sci fi–like threats, the real risks are already here. (The Center for Investigative Reporting, which produces Reveal and More To The Story, is currently suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement.) On this week's More To The Story, Hao sounds the alarm about the risks to the planet from AI's growth, examines the Trump administration's efforts to deregulate the industry, and explains why the version of AI being developed by Silicon Valley could destabilize democracy.Producer: Josh Sanburn | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Copy editor: Nikki Frick | Deputy executive producer: Taki Telonidis | Executive producer: Brett Myers | Executive editor: James West | Host: Al Letson Donate today at Revealnews.org/more Subscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weekly Follow us on Instagram and Bluesky Read: America's Worst Polluters See a Lifeline in Power-Gobbling AI—and Donald Trump (Mother Jones)Listen: Is AI Pushing Us Closer to Nuclear Disaster? Michael Wolff returns with Joanna Coles for a blistering look at the latest fractures inside Trump's MAGA coalition. From Trump's resurfacing of Epstein anxieties and his strange new pardon predicament with Ghislaine Maxwell, to his growing unease over Israel and the rise of Christian nationalism, Wolff sketches a portrait of a president losing control of the populist movement he created. The Daily Beast's Chief Content Officer Joanna Coles presses Wolff on Tucker Carlson's ambitions, online swirling Charlie Kirk conspiracies, and J.D. Vance's quiet maneuvering for power. Together, they dissect how Trump's cult of loyalty is turning on itself and why his old tactics may finally be failing. Is Trump still the master of the MAGA hivemind, or has he become just another voice in the chaos he unleashed? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Managing Editor Tyler McBrien, Foreign Policy Editor Daniel Byman, and Public Service Fellow Loren Voss to talk through (somehow only three of) the week's big national security news stories, including:“The Dream of the ‘90s is Alive in Portland.” This past week, the Trump administration made good on its threats to pursue further domestic military deployments, this time to Portland and Chicago. Thus far, the administration has stuck to the same model it pursued in Los Angeles, using troops to bolster federal immigration enforcement efforts. But President Trump has threatened to go further if his efforts are resisted, including by invoking the Insurrection Act—something that hasn't happened since 1992. How seriously should we take this threat? And where is it likely to lead?“Strip Poker.” President Trump and his senior advisers have been engaged in serious shuttle diplomacy for the past several weeks, seeming intent on reaching some sort of peace deal in the beleaguered Gaza Strip. And while it's required him to play every card in his hand—including by bullying both Israel and Hamas into signing on—President Trump appears to be on the verge of a breakthrough. How remarkable an accomplishment is this? And what will it mean for the trajectory of the conflict?“The Maduro Doctrine.” Media reports suggest that several senior Trump administration officials are intent on removing Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro from power, and that the build-up of U.S. military forces in the region—as well as the lethal targeting of alleged Venezuela-affiliated narcotics traffickers in recent weeks—is just a prelude to a bigger effort at regime change. How likely is it that the Trump administration will take such a step? And what could it mean for the region? In object lessons, everyone's taking a break—sort of. Dan's “break” involves playing The British Way, a strategy game designed by his colleague Stephen Rangazas that even non–political scientists will enjoy. Tyler's actually taking a break and heading back to high school with English Teacher on FX. Scott's taking a break from originality by recycling not one but two object lessons: a reminder to catch Katie Pruitt at Union Stage on 10/14 (seriously, go), and—if you're not in D.C.—Alan's once-in-a-blue-moon good advice to watch Slow Horses on Apple TV+. And Loren is taking a break from her vices and cleaning up her act with dirty soda.To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. On today's podcast, Executive Editor Natalie Orpett is joined by Judge Philip Pro and Judge Jeremy Fogel. Both are retired federal court judges who are members of a new organization, the Article III Coalition, which advocates for an independent judiciary. They talk about how the courts are faring amidst the enormous stresses of the day: a huge number of legal challenges to Trump administration actions, a judiciary under constant attack from critics—including several instances of real violence—and serious intra-branch tensions. And they discuss why it is so crucial that judges retain their independence—and how to make sure they do. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare.
