Sixty days. $25 billion. No open Strait of Hormuz, no enriched uranium recovered, no regime change, and gas prices up 42% since late February. That's the scoreboard on Iran, and it's the backdrop for Pete Hegseth's first real hearing — where combat veterans Seth Moulton and Pat Ryan finally put the Secretary of Defense through the wringer. Paul Rieckhoff joins the conversation to break down what oversight looks like when it actually shows up, why JD Vance and Dan Driscoll are watching, and why this war is metastasizing into something bigger than Iran. From Marco Rubio floating strikes on Cuba to Trump leaning on Putin as a peacemaker, this is forever war logic dressed up in new packaging — all gas, no brakes, no congressional authorization, and no plus-up for the VA to care for the next generation of veterans it'll create. Paul also unpacks the Comey indictment, the chilling effect on Jimmy Kimmel and the free press, and why the King of England sounded more like Reagan on alliances than the current administration. If you're in the angry middle and tired of the rigged two-party system handing you half-cooked wars and culture-war theater, this is your no-BS briefing. -WATCH full video of this episode here. -Ditch your expensive carrier and support Independent Americans! Now, he's the co-chair of the President's Co-Chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.  Sacks approaches the issue with a “let them cook” philosophy. Meaning, he thinks the way for the United States to win the global AI race is to move fast with minimally disruptive regulation. But with that comes a lot of questions about AI disruption to the workforce, who should be held responsible for harm caused by AI platforms, and the fear and division within America over the future of the technology.  Sacks joins Dasha Burns in a wide-ranging interview to discuss it all.

One week ago, the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner in Washington, D.C., was cut short by a harrowing assassination attempt. President Trump, attending the annual event for the first time in his presidency, was rushed to safety by the Secret Service alongside members of his Cabinet and various lawmakers. The suspect, 31-year-old California teacher and engineer Cole Allen, faces charges of attempted assassination after allegedly rushing past a magnetometer and opening fire outside the Washington Hilton ballroom. While one Secret Service agent was struck, he was fortunately saved by his bulletproof vest and is currently recovering. In the wake of this security breach, major questions are being asked: How did this happen, and how can we protect the President at future high-profile events? Earlier this week, Charles Marino—a former Secret Service Supervisory Special Agent and DHS Advisor—joined host Dave Anthony to break down the tactical failures of that evening and the urgent changes needed to Secret Service protocols. Marino explained the challenges of keeping a President safe and what needs to be done at future, large events. We often have to cut interviews short during the week, but we thought you might like to hear the full interview. Dahlia Lithwick reviews what has been an “exceptionally bad week” for American democracy. Former U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade explains why the charges against former FBI director James Comey, rooted in the claim that he threatened to kill President Trump – via the medium of seashells on Instagram – are unlikely to stick, no matter how hard Trump's Acting (and actively auditioning) Attorney General Todd Blanche tries. A deleted insta post from a beach in North Carolina is just not going to meet the Supreme Court's true-threat standard as laid out in Counterman v Colorado. But actually, landing a conviction is not the point, McQuade says –– Blanche has learned from Trump's longstanding legal playbook that he can always win by losing. And that's why she is also closely watching the DOJ's indictment of the Southern Poverty Law Center under a dubious fraud theory, warning that Blanche is both more skilled and more ruthless in using prosecutions for political ends, with few accountability mechanisms beyond potential disbarment. McQuade's new book, The Fix: Saving America from the Corruption of a Mob-Style Government is available for pre-order now. Next, Dahlia discusses this week's devastating SCOTUS decision in Louisiana v Callais with Madiba Dennie who explains how Justice Alito and the 6-3 Republican supermajority set about hollowing out Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, inviting states to redraw maps and entrench racial disenfranchisement, all under the cover of historically distorted “originalism.”Want more Amicus? //The Wire//2300Z April 30, 2026// //ROUTINE// //BLUF: TERRORISM CONCERNS REMAIN IN UNITED KINGDOM. UKRAINIAN TARGETING OF RUSSIAN OIL INFRASTRUCTURE CONTINUES. OIL MARKET REMAINS VOLATILE AS GULF WAR REMAINS STAGNANT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE-----  -International Events-Lebanon: The ceasefire has mostly collapsed, with fighting resuming between Hezbollah and the IDF. Several FPV drone strikes have targeted Israeli armor in the border regions of Lebanon over the past few days, and Israeli forces continue to mandate the evacuation of the newly created "buffer zone" south of the Litani River.United Kingdom: Counterterrorism policing operations have continued in the wake of the Golders Green attack yesterday, with authorities confirming that the suspect who conducted the stabbing is of Somali origin. The individual has been identified as Essa Suleiman, an individual who had previously been arrested for stabbing two police officers back in 2008. After this incident, he was incarcerated and a flagged as a potential terrorist threat under the Prevent program in 2020. At some point he was released and/or escaped the mental institution he was confined to, before conducting the stabbing yesterday. This morning, the national terrorism threat level was raised to SEVERE, meaning that further terror attacks are highly likely.Russia: Ukrainian targeting efforts throughout the nation have increased over the past few weeks, as Ukrainian forces pivot to targeting Russian oil terminals and refineries. The Lukoil petroleum refinery in Perm was hit overnight, along with the Tuapse Refinery on the Black Sea coast.Analyst Comment: This pivot to targeting Petroleum, Oil, and Lubricant (POL) facilities began in earnest last October, after a prolonged period of stagnation along the various front lines. As the war has been going on for a long time now, these targeting efforts received little attention outside the various communities observing the war. From Ukraine's perspective, these targeting efforts are perfectly reasonable, but for the rest of the world, the timing of this is going to cause an already tenuous oil market to increasingly be threatened. With the Middle East oil markets severely stifled by the Gulf War, the footnote that Russia is one of the largest producers of energy in the world has become a rather important detail. Russian oil refineries being blown up by the Ukrainians, while President Trump has alluded to the war continuing for some time, is almost certain to have follow-on effects which will (in the short term) drive up costs for nearly everything.-HomeFront-New York: This morning an explosion was reported at a residence in Queens. The incident began after one suspect (who has been identified as Anrup Parasram) attempted to break in to the residence, where his wife was living. A domestic disturbance developed, which involved the suspect attempting to conduct a stabbing attack. As authorities arrived on scene, the suspect barricaded himself inside the structure, before setting the house (and himself) on fire. A few moments later, the house exploded, possibly due to the suspect filling the home with natural gas. So far only minor injuries have been reported among responders, and the suspect remains "unaccounted for" per the FDNY.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Yesterday Brent crude futures briefly jumped to $120/bbl upon the news of the strategic situation regarding the war in the Middle East. In addition to the UAE announcing their departure from OPEC, diplomatic efforts to end the war are stagnant at best and President Trump has indicated that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will be in place on more of a long-term basis. Yesterday, a post was made on President Trump's Truth Social account referencing a "nonnuclear deal". Though the meaning of this is not perfectly clear (and thus can be interpreted in any numbe

Just after Donald Trump's first term began, he announced that he was considering eliminating the Federal Emergency Management Agency — the agency that helps Americans amid unthinkable disasters. And just a month ago, Trump repeated his disdain for FEMA, declaring that he's poised to make some big changes.  On this week's On the Media, we present the first installment in a four-part series called American Emergency: The Movement to Kill FEMA. In this episode, OTM co-host Micah Loewinger tells the origin story of FEMA — which initially focused less on disaster relief and more on plans to save the government from nuclear attack. The agency's secrecy inspired wild conspiracy theories and paranoia among far-right groups, including the fear that FEMA is building camps to detain citizens and stifle political dissent. The episode culminates with a never-before-told story of a plot to stalk FEMA's top brass in the nineties. The White House Correspondents' Dinner last weekend became the site of the third failed attempt to assassinate President Donald Trump. “I remember the feeling was very similar to when it was clear that the House had been invaded on January 6, 2021,” Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who was in attendance, tells The Intercept Briefing. “Everybody was afraid that somebody had come in with an AR-15 or something like that.”This week on the podcast, host Akela Lacy speaks to Raskin about his experience at the dinner and later being asked by CNN's Dana Bash about whether he's thinking twice about his “heated rhetoric” toward Trump. “It was curious that, in the wake of this terrible episode, that she would try to equate the way that Democrats talk and the way that President Trump talks,” says Raskin. “He calls people crazy, insane. He calls people evil, wicked. He will buttonhole reporters and tell them that they're stupid, they're ugly. ... But we try to keep it at the level of policies and their actions.” Some examples, which Raskin discusses, is his forthcoming investigation into Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner's role in the administration and conflicts of interest, and his fight in Congress to stop the reauthorization of warrantless surveillance on Americans. After this latest assassination attempt on Trump's life, claims that it was staged flooded the internet, from comments section to social media posts to videos of influencers dissecting alleged evidence.“We are so conditioned to distrust what we are being told by authorities that people immediately began concocting conspiracy theories about it even before we even knew what had happened. Whether it was a shooting or just dishes breaking,” says journalist Mike Rothschild. He's the author of “The Storm is Upon Us,” the first complete book on the QAnon conspiracy movement, and more recently, a 200-year history of conspiracy theories called “Jewish Space Lasers.”Rothschild joins Lacy to unpack the growing world of conspiracy theories that question whether the multiple assassination attempts against Trump were staged. They also dive into other conspiracy theories currently capturing the public imagination, such as the dead and missing scientists and a wildfire in Georgia. “This is one of our more fun and disturbing interviews,” says Lacy. For more, listen to the full conversation of The Intercept Briefing on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen.Keep our investigations free and fearless at theintercept.com/join.
