Who do you desire to be, and have you created the space to dream her up?There is a big difference between a goal and a dream. As a high achiever, fundamentals, planning, and logistics are second nature. Instead of prioritizing your dreams, you focus on goals and to-do lists. You end up in a space where you are doing all this hard work but don't feel connected to the amazing thing you are building.Today, I invite you to dream. Our dreams are the North Star against which we can set our goals. That needs to come first. Planting the seeds of dreams starts with building self-trust in the face of fear and uncertainty, which isn't always something that comes naturally. We must teach ourselves to recognize and prioritize peace to force the articulation of the dreamiest version of ourselves. So I ask you, what is your dream?GEMS DROPPED“If you truly want to innovate, if you truly want to build something that doesn't exist in its current form, you want to do something new in the world, this way of growing (through dreaming), it's going to fail you at some point”.“There is a dream and a vision that I have for my life, the kind of life that I want to live that goes beyond being unalone, that goes beyond being surrounded by people that I call friends, or just humans, you know, which definitely is generally a part of the vision. But it goes beyond that. There's some specificity built into how exactly I want that to feel”.“There is a difference between a dream and a goal, there's a difference between a dream and a plan or a strategy. All of those have various roles to play, whether we are talking about something as human, as connection and friendship or if we were talking about business strategy, or leadership growth, or what it means to scale up a team, for example.”“The thing that we will immediately move towards is plans and goals and strategies because as we are high achievers, that's actually the easy stuff. It takes effort, it takes work, it takes putting in more work than maybe the average person will and you recognize that and so it's like, “well, I'm willing to do it. I know that about myself, why am I still fearful?” I want you all to really understand that this starts to get down to this fundamental, almost childlike place for us, where we need to connect to a dream of what it's going to look like”.“The challenge comes into place when you haven't dreamt into the version of yourself that you want to occupy. At this new level of visibility, who do you desire to be? And have you created the space to dream her up? The dream has to come first y'all. We have to learn to give proper credit to this dimension of ourselves. It's not always about the strategies and the plans and the goals.”“We talk about playing big. We talk about expansion and growth. And it's all there. It's all in you. It is. It's just begging you to access yourself. To spend the time to slow it down to access yourself”.“I believe our dreams are anchored in peace because peace lends itself to clarity. Peace lends itself to creativity. Peace lends itself to restiveness which lends itself to clarity. That imaginative state that we need to be able to bask in, to soak up, to shine out. We have to be at peace”“You have the privilege of dreaming, you have it. You've been blessed with it. You got to occupy it”.MENTIONSKemi Doll - Your Unapologetic Career PodcastSTAY IN TOUCHCome and follow me on Instagram @moniquershields and I would love your feedback so send an email to ambition@moniquershields.com.

Ellen Bennett didn't quite know what she was going to do when she landed in Mexico at age 18, ready to explore her cultural heritage and embark on a voyage of self-discovery. Tirelessly working odd jobs, including announcing the winning lottery tickets on TV, a stay of two months quickly became four years, and she was ready for the next adventure. Working as a line cook, it didn't take long for Ellen to realize that, while she didn't want to become a restauranteur like she originally thought, she did want to revolutionize the industry. Although her now-ubiquitous Hedley & Bennett aprons are a must-have for chefs and home cooks alike, it took a good deal of creativity, confidence, trial and error to get from her first batch of 40 aprons to the culinary staple they've now become. With her bootstraps philosophy and wildly impressive, self-taught marketing skills, Ellen bestows the humble apron with an air of magic that helps chefs of all calibers look and feel the part. Not only that, but she also reveals her personal secrets to overcoming paralyzing doubt in order to make your dreams a reality in her new book, Dream First, Details Later! Thanks for listening! What I like about Scott Alexander is he's very straightforward, straight to the point —real blunt. He talks about the difference between being a rhino or being a cow, and he compares it today, he uses that as an analogy. But then, he also talks a lot about faith, and I think the biggest takeaway from everything is, without faith you can't get anything done in life. It really is through the means of faith that keeps me going. Without faith, you can't level success to where you get to without it.WANT TO LISTEN MORE?Did you like this episode? You have to create it and make it and be willing to shift when things happen, and your playbook goes flying out the window” [30:17]   “The shitstorms are so real. They're so aggressive, and so frequent, in growing something out of nothing, that if you don't truly believe in it, you don't have enough energy to fight through that storm.” [31:06]   “I'm not trying to be like that person, I'm going to walk in and be 100% myself. And they're going to appreciate that, because I'm not trying to act like somebody that I'm not. So there's an authenticity to it.” [34:24]   “If you have no ego, then you're willing to learn, and you're not claiming you know everything. Therefore, you can listen, if someone's telling you this is not working” [37:19]   Follow Ellen Hedley Bennett: Website: https://www.hedleyandbennett.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/hedleybennett Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ellenmariebennett/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hedleyandbennett/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ellen-marie-bennett-72517367/

One of the most common stories I hear is, "I'm not ready yet." You have a dream, a goal, an ambition, but without the connections, skills, or resources it feels out of reach. Social media makes it easy to see others' success without showing the REAL stuff. Late nights, blood, sweat, tears… the messy middle doesn't make the highlight reel. This mindset undermines our confidence and inhibits creativity. Chances are, you do have what you need to get started. Today's show is going to prove it to you. Ellen Bennett, Founder of Hedley and Bennett and author of DREAM FIRST, DETAILS LATER, lifts the curtains to talk about her uncertain, circuitous, passion-driven journey. After a difficult divorce at age 9, Ellen was raised by her mother, who worked long hours to keep the lights on and the family fed. At 18, a two-month trip to Mexico turned into 4 years before Ellen returned to the U.S., walked in the back door of a Michelin star restaurant and asked for a job as a line cook. There, she observed the challenges cooks faced- one of them being the one-size fits all aprons that wore out, caused problems and generally weren't quality products. Hedley and Bennett is now one of the world's leading Apron manufacturers, collaborating with tastemakers like Martha Stewart and Alton Brown and top chefs like David Chang, April Bloomfield, and Nobu Matsuhisa. For aspiring entrepreneurs stuck in analysis paralysis, creatives procrastinating on a personal project, or anyone caught in obsessive over-planning, Ellen shares her gutsy personal playbook to putting your inner worrier on silent and leaping into action. Every day something happens that could be the catalyst to change your life forever. At the age of 18, a passion for cooking led Ellen Marie Bennett to Mexico City. After culinary school — and countless crazy jobs — Ellen came back to LA to cook professionally in some of the city's best kitchens. When she was only 24 years old, she heard the head chef announce he was ordering a batch of aprons. Tired of wearing their poorly-designed garments, she blurted out “I have an apron company!” That fib led to Hedley & Bennett, an empire beloved by tastemakers such as Martha Stewart and Alton Brown. She believes that the right tools — including the right apron — will change how you feel, the way that you stand, and the way that you take on the task at hand. If you could bottle up her productivity and enthusiasm, it’d be a best seller — but since we can’t, reading her book will have to do. "I love, love, love this book! Ellen Marie Bennett, CEO of Hedley & Bennett, may have a concise but powerful piece of advice for you: “You got this! Dream first, details later.” At 24, Bennett was a line cook at Providence, a two Michelin-starred Los Angeles restaurant. As she explored the culinary world and sharpened her skills, she also noticed the poorly designed aprons and shirts kitchen staff were required to wear. "I love, love, love this book! The true story of a true heroine for our times—bold, brash and entirely honest about the downs and ups of making dreams come true." —Angela Duckworth, New York Times bestselling author of Grit Have you ever had a glimmer of an idea for a new company, project or product but were convinced you didn't have the tools to get started? Ellen Marie Bennett, CEO of Hedley & Bennett, may have a concise but powerful piece of advice for you: “You got this! Dream first, details later.” At 24, Bennett was a line cook at Providence, a two Michelin-starred Los Angeles restaurant. As she explored the culinary world and sharpened her skills, she also noticed the poorly designed aprons and shirts kitchen staff were required to wear. She decided to use her experience as a chef (in other words, not as a manufacturer but as a person who actually wore these uniforms) and leveraged this into a multi-million dollar apparel company. Her premium chef aprons and kitchen gear are worn by several of the best chefs and home cooks around the world. Trish talks to Ellen Bennett, the founder of Hedley & Bennett, a company she started that makes aprons and kitchen gear. Bennett recently wrote and released the book, "Dream First, Details Later : How to quit overthinking and make it happen." She talks about growing up half English, half Mexican, with a single, hard-working mama and how the desire to help her mom lead her straight to the kitchen. Bennett moved to Mexico when she was 18 to go to culinary school and that's where she had dozens of eclectic jobs. When she moved back to Los Angeles to pursue dreams of chefing, a sudden request from her boss for aprons started everything. Bennett talks about that moment in the kitchen, what happened next, and how she thinks simply showing up every day for life makes a huge difference.
