Kathryn interviews Author Nancy Regan. In her first book, the former television broadcaster, Nancy Regan, gives us a behind-the-scenes account of her experience hosting a newsmagazine with a daily audience of over a quarter million—and interviewing some of the biggest celebrities in the world—all while studiously concealing fear, insecurity, and self-doubt. With remarkable candor, Regan describes how she created the illusion of having it all together because she didn't want anyone to know how close she was to falling apart. Featuring soulful lessons from her conversations with such luminaries as Oprah and bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat Pray Love) and serving up some of her favorite practices for staying grounded in presence, she shares with us a powerful roadmap for living a more authentic life. She was the highly rated host of CTV's Atlantic's Live at 5 for fifteen years and as an actor, appeared in tv and film productions such as Haven, Trailer Park Boys, and Reversible Errors.Kathryn also interviews Author Meredith Bagby. In 1978, NASA announced its first class of civilian astronauts, opening its ranks to candidates beyond white male fighter pilots. Among them were: the first American woman, African American, Asian American, Jewish person, mother, LGBTQ+ person, and married couple. Now, Meredith Bagby shares the never-before-told stories of “the new guys,” a class of pioneers who shattered glass ceilings, overcame racial barriers, and literally changed the face of space travel. She researched oral histories, congressional hearings, investigative reports, and had exclusive access to and the cooperation of three of the first American women in space—Kathy Sullivan, Anna Fisher, and Rhea Seddon—and tells their captivating story of the race to be the first woman in space. She was a senior film development executive at DreamWorks SKG, a political reporter and producer for CNN, and a teaching fellow at Harvard's Institute of Politics. Her education includes Columbia Law School and Harvard College.

Jeffrey Katzenberg is an entertainment industry executive and entrepreneur, who throughout his career has repeatedly reshaped the media landscape. Jeffrey co-founded DreamWorks SKG, serving as CEO of DreamWorks Animation, which he grew into the world's largest animation studio, known for Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar and more. In 2016, DreamWorks Animation was sold to Comcast for $3.8 billion. Before founding DreamWorks, Jeffrey was Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios, where he took the studio from last place to first at the box office with hits like Three Men and a Baby, Pretty Woman, Father of the Bride and Sister Act. During this period, the company significantly scaled overall revenue from $12 million in 2010 to over $500 million run rate, Dropbox for Business revenue from $1 million to over $200mm run rate, and users from 15 million to 300 million. Most recently, Sujay Jaswa and Jeffrey Katzenberg co-founded WndrCo and Sujay has led WndrCo's investments in Figma, 1Password, Databricks, Pango, Pilot, Rally, Zagat / The Infatuation, and other great companies. In Today's Episode with Jeffrey Katzenberg and Sujay Jaswa: 1.) From Dreamworks and Dropbox to Venture with WndrCo: How did Jeffrey and Sujay both make their way into the world of venture from Dropbox and Dreamworks? What was Jeffrey's single biggest lesson from his time leading Dreamworks and being in Hollywood? What was Sujay's biggest takeaway from being at the helm as COO at Dropbox? 2.) Operating Experience is Irrelevant and Can Be Dangerous: Why does Sujay believe that operating experience is irrelevant? What are the single biggest mistakes that operator investors make when it comes to advising their founders? What do both Sujay and Jeffrey do to try and refresh their operating experience in real time? How did Quibi impact their willingness and desire to take large risk both investing and operating? 3.) Building Teams and Hiring People: What are the single biggest hiring mistakes Jeffrey and Sujay have made? What did Jeffrey mean when he said at Disney, “if you do not come in on Saturday, do not bother coming in on Sunday”. How do Jeffrey and Sujay feel about remote work? Why did it not work for them? What did Alfred Lin @ Sequoia teach Sujay about the question all managers need to ask themselves on questing whether they should let someone go? 4.) Silicon Valley: Dead and Entitled? Why does Jeffrey strongly disagree with the death of Silicon Valley? What will happen to the generation of companies that raised too much with no product-market fit? How will the mass layoffs in the valley change the valley as it is today? Does Sujay agree that millennials are the worst segment to hire from? Are they entitled?

The “comedy juggernaut” season inevitably arrives at the nihilistic kids movies of early-2000s Dreamworks SKG. Shark Tale is one of our most polarizing selections, and raises more questions than answers: is this film okay or a desecration of everything you’ve ever loved? Why do the fish use elevators? Why did Ziggy Marley agree to play a Jamaican jellyfish? How many races can you stereotype in an animated film about fish? If Aaron Sorkin was a fish, what would Studio 60 have been called? Why did they make one of the fish super hot? Does Tony have a heart? How many times does this episode go off the rails from one or both of the hosts cracking up? Are the Italians at it again (they definitely are)? Our theme music is “Hey Allison!” by Jeff Rosenstock, distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 license, and available at quoteunquoterecords.com. Today’s outro music is Rose Royce’s “Car Wash” as covered by Bailey Pelkman.

The second feature-length computer-animated film ever made, after Pixar's groundbreaking Toy Story, Antz is an oddball. A public feud between Jeffrey Katzenberg and then-CEO of Disney, Michael Eisner, led to Katzenberg founding Dreamworks SKG and subsequently feuding with Pixar's John Lasseter, who was making the suspiciously similar - and ultimately more successful - A Bug's Life. Pixar is the historically more successful and well-regarded studio, and the direct comparison between these two films usually sees Antz considered inferior, but Mike's long been fond of it, and in revisiting it we discuss both how far it shows us animation has come in the last twenty years, and its many qualities, including its rather grown-up tone and references, imaginative and expressive visual design and cinematography, and witty dialogue. Oh, and we try to work out how children think. Recorded on 18th October 2020.

with Jeffrey Katzenberg, Meg Whitman (@MegWhitman), and Marc Andreessen (@pmarca) In this episode of the a16z Podcast, based on a discussion that took place at our annual a16z Summit, Marc Andreessen interviews Jeffrey Katzenberg -- formerly CEO and co-founder of DreamWorks SKG (and chairman of Walt Disney Studios during some of its biggest hits), now co-founder of tech holding company WndrCo -- and Meg Whitman -- former President and CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and now CEO of Quibi ("quick bites"), focused on short-form mobile video. Both Katzenberg and Whitman have known each other for years, but they resided in two different worlds -- entertainment and software -- which are now merging, not only through their current venture but more broadly, given fundamental shifts in the entertainment and media landscape. In this conversation, Andreessen probes them on where Hollywood comes in (or doesn't); the intersection of software and new media, including how content creation changes as platforms evolve; and what’s next for entertainment. Along they also touch on their unique working relationship, and leadership lessons learned...

Eleven-year-old Cerys is no normal little girl. The orphaned daughter of a fifth century Welsh king and queen, her only friends in the island kingdom of Môna are her old Pictish caregiver and a young chambermaid. The new queen wants nothing to do with her-- instead doting on her own son, who will one day rule Môna in place of Cerys. The people of Môna, royal and commoner alike, barely remember she even exists. It’s hard being a young princess without a kingdom or even a mother and a father. It’s even harder for Cerys because in addition to her other troubles, she was born mentally impaired. She lives her life in a perpetual fog of loss and regret, wishing more than anything to be like everyone else…to be normal. Then Cerys meets a new friend, one whose thoughts are as clear to her as speech, and she finds her own previously muddled thoughts growing clearer. It seems like a miracle to Cerys and the small circle of people who care for her. Now that her thoughts are clearer though, she knows she can’t ever tell anyone how she came by her incredible cure. In fact, she knows that if anyone found out her friend’s identity, it would surely lead to death for both of them. Like Cerys, her new friend is different from everyone else in the world.About the author:In the 1990’s and 2000’s, Guy Donovan worked in both television and feature films as an animator and storyboard artist/designer for Marvel Films, Hanna-Barbera, Sony Pictures, DreamWorks SKG, and Warner Bros Feature Animation, among others. Now he works at a government job in North Dakota in return for a steady paycheck and job security, allowing him to continue his wasteful habits of eating and providing for my wife and daughter.Creatively starved by his job, Guy turned to writing at the advice of his wife, a fellow Hollywood expatriate who writes both screenplays and novels. That led to his current obsession with 5th century Wales, which is the setting of his “Dragon’s Treasure Series." The first three novels, “The Forgotten Princess of Môna,” “A Cold, White Home,” and “Songs of Autumn” are currently available as eBooks for the Kindle. The final installment, “Memories so Distant and Brief,” will follow in winter of 2018.
As I look at a list of every movie coming out in the first half of 2017, hear me talk about the parallels between U.S. presidents and movie Batmans, a disturbing cluster of returning 2002 franchises, the filmographies of M. Night Shyamalan and Gore Verbinski, which live action Disney adaptation was better than the animated original, movies based on old crappy cop shows, the sexual dynamics of the Smurfs village, the origins of Dreamworks SKG, and an addendum to this podcast's ultimate mission statement.

A must-see for filmmakers, animators, fans and would-be moguls of tomorrow, hosted by Channel 10's Executive General Manager, Russel Howcroft (best known as The Gruen Transfer's advertising media personality).

Brigas.
