The way we approach stress can make or break our day, and our life. You have to figure out the stress equation because, if left unchecked, stress can drain your capacity right out of you.  In this episode stress expert Allison Graham teaches how stress is really an illusion. Many high achievers believe that the only way to achieve success is by living an intense, high-stress lifestyle. However, adopting a zen-like approach to managing stress can be just as effective without sacrificing intensity. Learn how to make friends with your stress and how to redefine the relationship you have with stress. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:  Why stress is an illusion Allison's journey with pain The correlation between stress and chronic pain The loop of destructive self-judgment What to do in the absence of emotion Situational awareness and self-awareness [10:43] The Correlation Between Stress and Chronic Pain As your stress level rises, your body and mind suffer, and your ability to make friends with your pain and prevent it from taking over your life weakens. To combat this, you have to figure out the stress equation because if left unchecked, it can drain and suck your capacity right out of you. Designing how you use your capacity each day is crucial to managing stress and chronic pain. By proactively designing how you use your capacity to manage stress, you can improve your ability to be resilient and manage chronic pain. [12:33] Zen Approach: Managing Stress without Sacrificing Intensity Many high achievers believe that the only way to achieve success is by living an intense, high-stress lifestyle. However, adopting a zen-like approach to managing stress can be just as effective without sacrificing intensity. There are people who live a kumbaya lifestyle and manage to stay at a nice, cool pace that works for them. Meanwhile, the rest of us must figure out how to reach our goals without letting stress take over. It's about shifting our perception of stress and realizing that we don't have to completely change who we are to be stress-free. We weren't designed to be lackadaisical human beings lying on the beach, so it's important to find a balance between intensity and mindfulness. By embracing a zen approach to stress management, we can still achieve our goals without sacrificing our mental health and wellbeing. [15:41] The Loop of Destructive Self-Judgment Do you find yourself judging yourself for being judgmental? This negative loop is just one layer of destructive stress and a barrier to achieving peak performance. It's important to remember that the things that define our lives are often beyond our control. The reality is that we can't just ignore our feelings and stuff them down. Instead, we need to break the loop of destructive self-judgment and embrace our emotions, even the negative ones, so we can move forward and achieve our goals without the weight of self-judgment holding us back. Notable quotes: [02:09] Stress – the way that we're taught to approach it, the way we're taught to solve it, to measure it, to live with it is–all of it combined – is the illusion. [02:20] [10:43] There's a definite correlation between destructive stress and our level of chronic pain.  Resources Mentioned:  Take Back Your Weekends: Stress Less, Do More, Be Happier Download this week's free resource instantly when you sign up for The Good Mood Show newsletter here!  Or, reach out on our contact page at GoodMoodShow.com/Contact and we will email you a copy of any free resource you request. Sometimes life throws you a curveball. And then another. And then another. For people, like Allison Graham, one twist of fate can suddenly change everything. Out of her own need to come to terms with a mountain of adversity, chronic neuropathic physical pain, and how to manage stress for greater resilience, Allison stood tall and has fought hard to master her fate. Amazingly, she still made time to join me, even while caring and offering loving support for her mother. This podcast has four recurring themes, and two are how to become a better service leader and what it is to be a strong woman in our times. Listen to Allison. Allison is the real deal. Come and learn how she's coaching individuals and training companies, and how she's very much someone who makes every second count. Oh, right. CONTRARIAN. 'It's about making sure that the family can see how that's going to fit in with their child for the here and now, but also I'm very much thinking I've got to hand this child on to adult services with two good kidneys. It's about not just the continence, but keeping the kidneys healthy into adulthood.' – Dr Allison Graham Welcome to our next podcast instalment as we continue to cover the topics that matter within the care of SCI, engaging experts from all over the world.  In this episode host Catharina Cziczkat of Wellspect, Germany is joined by Jens Larsson from Skånes University Hospital SUS, Sweden and Dr Allison Graham of Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, UK, to discuss the challenges of bowel and bladder care in patients navigating from childhood to becoming independent teenagers and adults. What's the best way to go about this when dealing with sensitive areas such as catheterisation? To help us, our panel share their knowledge and experience, explaining how we make the transition to adult services workable for families with children in need of bladder and bowel management. What can we do to help teenagers to become independent, removing the responsibility from parents and placing this onto themselves? How do we motivate them? Building relationships and trust with families is key to achieving better quality of life in the short term, as well as working towards improving function and kidney health in the long-term. The ultimate goal is to ensure the transition from child to teenager is as smooth as possible, giving patients the tools and knowledge to empower them whilst avoiding complications.  'It's an embarrassing subject and, It's an area that you don't as a child, or even as a parent want to talk about. But you need to build that confidence with the family and, make them comfortable in talking to you about it as well. That's something I think is important, to give the families and the child as much information as possible.' ~ Jens Larsson Our panellists wholeheartedly agree that by working closely with the child's family whilst directly involving the child, treating our patients as individuals, and sharing all the available information, the process can be effectively managed, ensuring the transition from child to young adult to an independent adult is successful. Contact us directly with any questions or comments at admin@iscos.org.uk. Six hugs now, the entire time. So, a year: six hugs. March 19 was the last pre-pandemic hug that I had. I can actually recount these times of physical comfort and physical contact in a year. In November, I went to the chiropractor. My chiropractor, her name is Ericka, was recovering from brain surgery, a brain tumor. Surgery, chemo, and radiation. Her immune system was completely wiped out. And she was still seeing people and being really careful. I went to her because I was having some chronic pain. Went through the whole process. After we were done, my arm was on the side of the chair. And she just reached over and kind of rubbed my arm. The kind of touch we had pre

Bobbie Carlton has graciously offered Resiliency Ninja listeners a 25% discount on their annual membership to Innovation Women. www.innovationwomen.com Use the code NINJA  On the heels of International Women’s Day, Bobbie Carlton and I talk about the gender gap in the professional speaking industry. Even in 2019, corporate event planners are defaulting to mainly male agendas and aren’t sure where to find qualified, dynamic female speakers for their events. Well, there are thousands of us and Innovation Women is one place to find a listing of professional female speakers. Public speaking is a key factor in advancing your business and your career, but fewer women get asked to speak and more women turn down invitations. Women are often in the dark about how the professional speaking game works.  Connect with Bobbie and I on social media and let us know:  Why are men still dominating the professional speaking industry? What can we do to balance the gender gap?  Here’s a formal bio on Bobbie Carlton:  Bobbie Carlton, founder of Carlton PR & Marketing, Innovation Nights and Innovation Women, has been called Boston’s Innovation Den Mother and the Startup Fairy Godmother. She’s an award-winning marketing, PR and social media professional. She speaks regularly on marketing, public speaking and women’s issues. Her humorous approach and fiery “let’s make something happen” brand is supported by the real world results she helps drive: 1200+ new products launched, $3B in funding, and 1000+ women speaking at conferences and events.    Currently a “parallel” entrepreneur (instead of a serial entrepreneur), Bobbie has spent the last 10 years building her own businesses as well as supporting client and community efforts. Previously, in addition to working with a number of Boston-area PR and marketing firms, she headed global PR at Cognos and PTC, both publicly-held enterprise software companies. In 2006 she switched gears, joining a startup focused on supporting self-esteem and positive role models for preteen girls through a social network and book series.    In 2010 she was called one of the “ten Bostonians who have done the most for the startup community”. She’s also received numerous professional awards: Marketing Sherpa Viral Campaign of the Year, several PRSA Silver Anvils, Mass High Tech All-star, Boston Business Journal Woman to Watch, PR News Gamechanger and Boston’s “50 on Fire.”    Follow Bobbie on Twitter as Twitter.com/BobbieC  Twitter.com/@MassInno  Twitter.com/@WomenInno  Twitter.com/@CarltonPRM  We'd like to be able to offer a discount to an Innovation Women membership. How to Support a Female-Friendly Culture at Work:

Resiliency Ninja with Allison Graham

How to support women in the workplace on International Women’s Day and beyond.  This episode of Resiliency Ninja with Allison Graham is dedicated to International Women’s Day. In it I share three simple ideas on how you can support women in the workplace and then share an excerpt from my book, Married My Mom, Birthed a Dog: How to Be Resilient When Life Sucks. (Chapter 32 page 144) Like all of these special days that mark an important topic, this is one day that needs to spark action in how we show up everyday. The drama we see on reality tv shows and the Housewives of … is NOT the way we build loyalty with our teammates, deal with difficult coworkers or break the glass ceiling.  Here are 3 ways we can support women’s career advancement at work. Listen the podcast to hear the full insights.  -       Celebrate and acknowledge other women’s successes. Like REALLY celebrate. Recognize that another person’s success, does not diminish your potential for success.  -       Don’t gossip negatively about someone else. If you have issue with someone else, do them the courtesy of addressing it directly with the person. If you’re going to gossip, get caught saying something kind.  -       Don’t buy in stereotypes and specifically that women are more emotional at work. Even if we are, being able to feel into our decisions is one of our superhero powers.  -       Bonus tip: what to know how to not cry in a meeting. Squeeze your butt cheeks together. It distracts your brain so you can hold back the tears!   The excerpt from my book…  Musical Chairs, Who’s Out? CALL IT JEALOUSY OR COMPETITIVENESS, some people step on others as they rise to the top. There is so much abundance in the world why bother? Both men and women engage in this combative behavior, but in many ways society has set women up to be especially prone to the ugly side of the competitive climb. Back in the day when women were just beginning to be accepted in professional environments, there were only one or two spots at the top that women could fill. This gender prejudice launched a game of musical chairs. The ruthless women who pushed everyone else aside were the only ones left with a seat at the big boys’ table. When the music stopped, the last chair would go to the woman who threw the most elbows and kicked her high-heeled feet hardest. It was an era fueled by a scarcity mentality. At the root of scarcity is fear. In this case, there was fear that a woman wouldn’t make it to the top unless she was the first and only one there.I’m inspired by a genuine society where men and women can truly feel supported by each other. We have to stop pulling chairs away when the music stops. Instead we must start adding more chairs to the mix, to invite more people of both genders and various backgrounds to join a bigger table of success. Thankfully, these days there is so much room at the top you can claim your seat at whatever table motivates you. You don’t need the old boys’ network anymore; you can create your own table.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Allison Graham shares her challenges as a business owner after a botched surgery left her with permanent nerve damage and the joy of becoming a “resiliency ninja”. “If you're going through hell, keep going” became a mantra for Allison Graham after she had a botched surgery that caused relentless nerve pain. Several surgeries and hundreds of doctor’s appointments later, Allison had to find a different way to deal with emotional, mental and financial challenges. Tired of wearing a mask to hide her struggle, Allison learned to stop hiding what was going on inside, adapt her business model and create a new kind of freedom. Allison’s story is remarkable, filled with hard-earned practical wisdom that she shares in her new book Married My Mom, Birthed A Dog. Conversation highlights: How her post surgery life gave her permission to let go of what she thought she had to do and build the life she really wanted. Allison explains the Continuum of Challenges: the difference between stress, obstacles and adversity. The ramifications of treating stress as adversity and adversity as stress takes you away from your power. Do the emotional work. Life feels different when you’re operating from a place of joy. Be creative to figure out what works for you. Setting goals that are realistic in the face of rampant FOMO (fear of missing out). How to recognize what FOMO feels like in your body. Advice for big-hearted people who are seeking meaning and impact as you navigate the self help industry. Allison describes what it was like to let go and find forgiveness. Allison Graham is a business growth consultant, speaker, and best-selling author of “Married My Mom, Birthed a Dog: How To Be Resilient When Life Sucks.” Our discussion came just about at the time of the creative culmination of the book, keynote speaking and related business launch that she had first conceived of more than a half-decade ago. Though Allison has achieved and enjoyed a significant level of success helping businesses and business people become more effective with their sales and networking, as you will hear, she has long had a passion for wanting to contribute to the personal development field in an effort to be a help to others. Some of the key things Allison has taken from her journey include: 1. Identifying and re-voicing what she calls “The Internal Messenger of BS.” 2. Awareness. More specifically, self-awareness, and how that may have been a great benefit to her if she had it to do all over again. 3. Forgiveness. As Allison put it: “What it takes to forgive is a very long journey but you let go in an instant …from that moment the healing, I believe, really truly began." Allison's is a remarkable story filled with all kinds of caring, authentic and valuable bits of hard-earned perspective that are sure to serve you well as you reflect upon your journey and road ahead also. ©2017 Kevin Bulmer Enterprises
