President Xi Jinping announced the start of the 31st FISU World University Games at a spectacular opening ceremony in Chengdu, Sichuan province, on Friday.7月28日,国家主席习近平在四川成都举行的盛大开幕式上宣布,由国际大学生体育联合会主办的第31届世界大学生运动会正式开幕。Applause filled the 40,000-seater Dong'an Lake Sports Park Stadium as Xi declared the opening of the first large international sporting event to take place in China since it adjusted its COVID-19 response mechanism late last year. Apart from medals, student-athletes taking part in the event are also looking forward to bringing home fond memories of China and new friendships, athletes and officials said. A total of 6,500 student-athletes from 113 countries and regions will compete in 269 events across 18 sports at the Chengdu games, which run until Aug 8. The event is the third summer university games held on the Chinese mainland, following those in Beijing in 2001 and Shenzhen in 2011. Huai Jinpeng, president of the organizing committee of the Chengdu games and minister of education, extended a warm welcome to young athletes and coaches from all over the world at the opening ceremony. Tonight, the world is turning its eyes to China and to Chengdu in particular, to witness university students from across the globe coming together to celebrate this splendid gathering of youth and embark on a journey of self-transcendence," Huai said. Leonz Eder, acting president of the International University Sports Federation, thanked China, Chengdu, the members of the organizing committee and the volunteers for their contribution to making the grand event happen. Eder said that "the magic of the FISU World University Games" was the fact that it brought together so many young people from so many different countries and regions. The atmosphere at the stadium reached a climax when the flame of the Chengdu games at the torch tower outside the stadium was ignited by fireworks set off by 31 torch bearers headed by Senior Colonel Ye Guangfu, one of China's Shenzhou XIII astronauts. Eder said in an interview with China Daily on Thursday that the World University Games continue to be highly regarded as a competitive international and multisport event. Not only does the event enable current elite and emerging athletes to compete against the best in their sport, but it also provides a platform from which many student-athletes launch their international careers, Eder said. But competition is not everything at the Chengdu games because the event can also help young people from all over the world learn about different cultures and boost understanding, especially about China, he added. I'm pretty sure that the majority of the students here have never been to China before. What they have learned about China in the Western media is one thing, but to come here to see Chengdu and feel the hospitality of the people will be something else," Eder said. He added that besides doing their best, he hopes the student-athletes can take the opportunity to meet other students from all over the world and make new friends, which is as important as competing. The Chengdu games offer student-athletes great opportunities to meet others from different countries who have the same goal, which combines top-notch sports performance with intellectual pursuits, said Syed Ibadullah Ayaz, a taekwondo athlete from Australia. I've watched many opening ceremonies of international sporting events on TV since I was a child. And now I've got to experience it myself. I'm looking forward to all the different cultures that are going to be represented there," Ayaz said ahead of the opening ceremony. Furthermore, the organization of the Chengdu games and the facilities have impressed many officials and athletes. Daniel Guerrero, head of the United States delegation, said it was wonderful to see the incredible preparations made by Chengdu, the local organizers and the FISU. What we have seen in Chengdu is extraordinary. I hope all the athletes could compete in a friendly environment, and get to know the cultures of different countries," Guerrero said.“在成都所见到的真是非凡。 Jonathan Larsen, a coach of the German badminton team, expressed his pleasure at being in Chengdu. We've been welcomed very warmly, and the arena looks absolutely amazing, so we are looking forward to the Chengdu games," Larsen said.“我们得到了非常热情的欢迎,体育馆看起来非常壮观,我们非常期待成都运动会。” The Chengdu games were postponed from 2021 to this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The FISU amended the registration rules to ensure that university students did not lose their eligibility due to the postponement. Consequently, student-athletes who met the qualifications in 2021 are still eligible to participate in the Chengdu games. On the sidelines of the event, the organizers have arranged a series of cultural activities for the participants, such as observing giant pandas and enjoying Sichuan Opera, to highlight the host city's unique features. Friendship英/ˈfrendʃɪp/美/ˈfrendʃɪp/n. Reporter: Cui Jia in Chengdu Intern:Zang Tianyi

If we go back ten or so years, the “thing” that the Speed River group would be known for is their 5000m/10000m athletes. Reid Coolsaet had success in the 5, winning FISU silver back in 2005, collecting 4 national championship titles, and representing the Canadian national team at a world championships. His teammate, Eric Gillis, was a 10,000m guy, competing at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. Times have changed though, the club is now known now for a wider variety of reasons, and those athletes have moved up to the marathon, achieving great things in that race, but that’s not to say that the 5 and 10 group is any less potent. There are fresh faces carving out names for themselves in those 2 events, and their aim is to not only match, but eclipse their teammates historical accomplishments. This week’s show, we look specifically at the 5 and 10,000m event groups and some of the athletes training for those distances in Guelph. We’ll chat with former junior record holder Heather Petrick about her time in Guelph, dealing with injuries and what the future holds for her, we’ll also talk with Evan Esselink, the Canadian 10,000m champion, about the accountability of living with other high performance athletes and his move from running in the NCAA to a post collegiate environment, and we’ll check in with Ross Proudfoot, 2 time Canadian Cross Country Champion, who will show us around Guelph, including some great work out spots, and places important to the team.

It seems like it’s been repeatedly said, both on this show and else where, but after the last few weeks (and months) of Canadian athletic performances on the world stage, it bears repeating, this is an exciting time to be a Canadian athletics fan. Whether it be at any of the the Diamond League meets, FISU, Pan Ams or our impressive haul at the World Championships, it’s been an exciting summer, with solid results to back it up. On this week’s show, we chat with one of the contributors to that medal count, Ben Thorne, the B.C Race Walker who surprised us all with a bronze medal and the 20km Canadian race walk record in Beijing, about the best heckle he’s ever heard, politics in his event and his time in Bejing. As well we wrap up the summer season (from Pan-Ams and beyond) and look ahead to the fall (marathons and cross) with our in house run pundit, Jeff Costen.

At first glance, you wouldn’t think that my two guests and what they represent, would have much in common. One, an up and coming middle distance runner, fresh off an impressive silver medal performance at the FISU games, ready to take on the ones she’s looked up to on the grandest of stages, and the other, a representative for the biggest beer mile spectacular the world has seen. Sure, there are the obvious connectors, like running, but still, one would think, not much there. If I had to draw some sort of connection between the two though, it would be this: Between the two, there is so much yet unrealized potential, Gabriela Stafford currently has the running world right where she wants it, she’s young, she’s already putting down world class times, and she’s still improving year by year, and the World Beer Mile Classic, not even in its first running has already attracted the likes of ESPN, as well as most of the world’s top beer milers. If I had to guess, world records will fall, and we’re just witnessing a fraction of the attention this will receive in the coming weeks. So this week on the terminal mile, it’s all about the big things...still to come. My guest this week is Lance Cansdale, head coach of the Dal Tigers and Team Leader for Team Canada at FISU Games in Kazan Russia. Lance talks about returning to coaching after a 2 year hiatus, his role as Team Leader at FISU and the games themselves.  Pretty good interview - done at 7:30am my time (3:30pm in Russia) - I would have kept him longer but my kids woke up and were too noisy. Sorry folks. #coachmikepodcast will be on hiatus until August due to the busy 3 week period of Senior Nats, Age Groups and the travel involved. Hopefully the archives, my blog & Twitter account will tide you over until then. As always, you should check out my blog and follow me on Twitter(@coachmikeswim). Check out my archived past episodes as well.
