This week we're looking at the hair and makeup creatives who brought the cast of the new Sofia Coppola movie Priscilla to life. I've split the show into three segments; starting with a little background into the making of the biopic, then I'll be sharing my conversation with Cliona Furey, Head of Hair Design on the movie before sharing some behind the scenes product information from Jo-Ann MacNeil, Head of Makeup Design and find out how she turned actress Cailee Spaeny into Priscilla. Also, if you want to see some visuals from the movie, I've made a few TikToks which you can find at https://www.tiktok.com/@charissekenion and if you're one of my US-based listeners I'd love to know your thoughts on the movie if you've seen it! Mac Pytyck aka The Ink Barber | 357 | thamichaelated Mac Pytyck A.K.A The Inkd Barber joins us in THA Schtudio Toniiiiiiiight and we had a fascinating conversation about giving Haircuts, Riding Bikes, Golfing, Tattoos and having celebrity customers like Drake, Adam Sandler, AP Dhillon and Gurinder Gill to name a few. Mac started his hair-styling journey from NuWave School of Hair Design in Thunder Bay, ON and was always passionate about creating an experience for his customers through his art. He knows that he is a Hair-Therapist because people share struggles, experiences and hardships with him and he likes to maintain customer-hairdresser confidentiality as he always wants to create a safe space for people that he interacts with on a daily basis. (Mental health anyone) Mac was awarded 'Best Barber in Canada' for the first time in 2019 while he was still in hair school and he went on to win it for two more years consecutively. He spoke about his love for tattooing and the similarities he noticed between a Tattoo shop and a Barber Shop. He also mentioned celebrating with the Toronto Raptors team after his award. There is so much we talked about on the show and we think we could talk to Mac for hours at end, so we can't wait to bring him on back and continue our conversation and go on rides with him in the country and do a podcast on-the-move. She discovered her passion for creating art with hair as she applied to NuWave School of Hair Design and now after over 22 years of successfully making a mark in her profession she is also a Joico Colour Educator. Jules loves talking to people and has gotten even better at it through her profession even though early in life she used to be a very shy kid who was ultimately forced to go up on stage to read Robert Munsch's 'Mortimer' which was the spark to her confidence today. She believes hair has always been important for us, especially for women but also agrees that short hair is a new trend that deserves more attention and is of the opinion that women who have very short hair shouldn't have to pay exorbitant rates for their styling sessions. Jules credits her excellent clientele for her success in her profession and also believes that some of her clients have turned into family for her.Join us every Monday & Wednesday at 8:45pm for our Livestream on YouTube or catch us on Spotify in video as well. https://www.driftdayspa.ca Photos and write up by @mohit.ranadive Join us for our livestream at 8:45 PM EST on April 5th 2023! His ability to conjure a crowd is harnessed with immense theatricality; drawn from the combination of idiosyncratic invention in performance; and the greasepaints that contribute to the creation of an arresting and hypnotic aesthetic. Early song choices that supported his developing style included Gary Numan's Are Friends Electric? and Iggy Pop's I'm Bored, which he performed in ‘boy drag'. Considered one of the best make-up artists in Australia, Stryker contributed to the drag aesthetic on the film Priscilla - Queen of the Desert; ultimately being awarded the British Academy of Film and Television Award for Best Make-up and Hair Design in 1994. This episode is a conversation with Robert Macaulay of Robert's Hair Design of Duke St, Dennistoun. Robert was born and brought up in Sword St and knows Dennistoun intimately. Our conversation goes into life in the area in Robert's youth, how he started his working life at the age of 9, his memories of cinemas in the area, childhood holidays, the Dennistoun Palais in its roller disco days, roller hockey, the music scene in Glasgow of his younger days, his professional life and lots more besides. As we recorded this conversation over Zoom there are occasional odd noises and pinging sounds, I've tried to edit them out where possible, but you will hear the whistle and echo for which I apologise. Thank you to Gail and Alison at Florresters on Duke St, and Mairi Binnie for putting me in contact with Robert. There are so many more tales to be told, so if you know someone who knows tales of Dennistoun, Sighthill or Haghill and you think they'd be willing to talk to us for the podcast, we'd love to hear from them! I'm particularly keen to speak to folk from Haghill as we've not spoken to anyone there yet. I'd also love to speak to anyone from the diverse immigrant communities in the area, so please do drop us a line on info@tales-fae-the-east.com with any contacts you think would be willing to talk. Episode links and more can be found on tales-fae-the-east.com Photo of Robert by Tim Morozzo Thank you for listening!

Johanna talks with Cassandra Freeman, Nikiya Mathis, and Cody Renard Richard about Black hair in theatre and film. Black actors' hair needs are continually neglected in the industry; producers are often woefully lacking in knowledge of the time, money, and work required to achieve various hairstyles. Companies often have no relationship with Black hair/wig stylists in their community, and leave Black actors to spend their own money and time on styling for their roles. In this episode, we discuss the ways theatre and film can end Black hair discrimination, and the effects such discrimination has had on Black artists.
When some of the worlds greatest hair educators are mentioned, todays very special guest Mark Hayes is often one of them named. International Creative Director of the iconic Sassoon brand, Mark Hayes has inspired hairdressers around the world for over 40 years with his coaching and teaching. And today we’re to get a privileged insight into his story, going right back to when Mark began his love affair with hair in 1977 as he started out as an apprentice at the busy Sassoon London Salon on South Molton Street. For so many hairdressers old and young, the name Sassoon still has the reputation that has been built on developing and providing world-class education at their academies and education centres around the globe. Founded by the most well known and highly regarded hairdresser of all time , Vidal Sassoon, holding the Sassoon International Creative Director role is one of the mosts revered positions to have in hairdressing. In our conversation with Mark, we not only get to learn about how he went from the Sassoon apprentice program in 1979 to today leading the worldwide demand for Sassoon's Hair Design, but also the psyche and characteristics that has seen he become one of the worlds greatest hair educators. What I love more than anything else from our interview with Mark, is how he places the client at the centre of everything he stands for in hairdressing. Technical excellence, yes, but to be an intuitive communicator who's goal is to make everyone of his clients feel happy with what ever he creates for them. This is a special listen with a very special hairdresser. Enjoy! Become a Patreon Fan Club member of the How To Cut It Podcast A podcast produced by Hairy Media Productions. So much so that she just tends to make friends with almost all of her brides after their wedding because they love her so much. Listen to her episode and you will immediately see why.

In her episode Megan talks about tips and tricks with makeup for your day along with even getting a skin care regimen way before you are probably thinking you should.
I met Tina in a Starbucks Coffee Shop where she offered to carry my tote bag for me that day. Tina was a dental hygienist and her husband felt she was destined to help more people around the world. He was right! In 1998, she purchased Great Lakes Academy of Hair Design. She is a light to those around her. Once you hear her interview you will understand why she is so amazing. When Tina heard about the newly forming Paul Mitchell school network, she jumped at the opportunity and immediately flew out to meet the company's dean and co-founder, Winn Claybaugh. Tina loved what she heard and in 2004 her school became Paul Mitchell The School Great Lakes and one of the 10 original Paul Mitchell schools. She has since opened several schools and salons since that day. Tina believes in "people before profit" and she often says "I'm in the business of changing lives." She has published four books Be a Leader, Be Amazing, Be a Planner, and Be Uncommon. Tina is a big believer in giving back and her schools are consistently ranked in the top 10 for fundraising. Tina's passion to help people see their true potential and make the world a better place has led her to mission trips in Guatemala with the John Maxwell team to train more than 25,000 leaders in all sectors of leadership. Today, we bring you the "Cash 4 Calendars" campaign! Speak Up Sunderland host Betty Ball teamed up with Kate Townsend, the Sunderland Foodbank Coordinator, to raise £500 - enough to buy an advent calendar for every kid in Sunderland who depends on the food banks, and would otherwise miss out on the countdown to Christmas. But they smashed the target! At the moment, the total stands at over £1,600, including over 500 advent calendars, for children in Sunderland. As Betty's a Breakfast presenter on Spark in Sunderland, she called on the help of many of the community radio stations' volunteers - including the Sunderland-based 14-year old singer / songwriter Tom 'Mouse' Smith, who presents Spark's Local Music Show, and performed live at independent to raise money - and Drive Time presenter Jonny Beattie, who had his chest and armpits waxed to raise money! Youch! A great big thank you from Betty to the local & national businesses & partners who helped raise money for the Cash 4 Calendars campaign. Algarve Addicts: a thriving community of healthy, outdoor people connected by the Algarve, Portugal.
Bradley Querl (really it should be Curl, shouldn't it?) has practiced hair design (now with his salon called B Hair Design) all his life and is a 3rd generation hair designer. Bradley is the consummate professional and does a fantastic job with anyone's head, even throwing in a super relaxing head massage into the deal. I checked in with Brad to here his story and what his take is on life in the Algarve. If you resonate with any of his suggestions, let us know! Tune in to Bradley's interview B Hair Design Show notes We talk about B Hair Design's location, history and the tough times starting up a business in the middle of Portugal's dreaded crisis. 2008-2012 was a tough time for everyone here. Bradley's hair history: Zimbabwe, London and Portugal. Hair Design vs Hair Dresser - the new terminology. In Portugal all hairdressers are generally called "Cabelereiros". Personal note: I love having my hair cut while I'm travelling, it just feels like an insight to local life somehow. Do you agree? A partnership offer in the Algarve. In Faro to be more precise. We talk about the area where Brad lives near Quarteira and Social Restaurant in particular. Brad's recommendations: Alte Hotel We digress to Trail running and Mountain biking in the Algarve: the Trail Run Cork: Educating visitors about cork trees! Sagres, the end of the world and her fantastic cliffs, rich history and authentic surf lifestyle. New Sushi Restaurant in Loulé called Artigo 3, highly recommended by both Bradley and another guest of mine, Constantino Jordan. Manzo Steakhouse near Albufeira in Olhos de Água. Starting a business in the Algarve: "a big shock", a slower pace of life, being late for meetings and how to be conscious of the traditional Portuguese lunchtime. Parties on the beach, here's a whole selection - No Solo Agua, Thai Beach, Julias, Izzys, Temperus Beach Restaurant Bradley turns the tables on me and quizzes me about the origins of Algarve Addicts! Good one :)
Charles LaPointe is a theatrical hair and wig designer with work in more than 50 Broadway shows including Holiday Inn, On Your Feet!, Hamilton, The Color Purple, Of Mice and Men, Violet, Side Show, The Elephant Man, After Midnight, Beautiful, A Gentleman's Guide to Love & Murder, Motown, Jekyll & Hyde, Clybourne Park, Bring It On, Newsies, Memphis, Lombardi, Fences, In the Heights, Jersey Boys, and A Raisin in the Sun. Charles gave me a master class in Hair Design in this podcast, and since I have a feeling this is an area you may not know the most about either, I encourage you to listen in as we chat about: How he learned by doing, not by studying, and why this is important no matter WHAT you want to do in life, from making wigs to making musicals. Where do they get all the hair for these wigs anyway? (I call this the “Cosette Question” – or “Do people really sell their hair on the streets?”) The process of designing a wig and how long it takes (not to mention why it is so expensive). Why do we need wigs on Broadway anyway when so many actors have fantastic hair? How a wig helps an actor find a character and how the hair plays into the storytelling of a show. Cory and Leah chat about the challenges of designing blood soaked hair for 'Carrie', famous locks for 'A Night with Janis Joplin' and her current work in 'On the Town' and the upcoming 'Heidi Chronicles.' She's got some great stories and insight about designing hair that must be true to the period, practical for 8 shows a week, and comfortable for the actors. She even touches on her love/hate relationship with those pesky hair intruders known as mic packs. Let it fly in the breeze, get caught in the trees and give a home to the fleas, we're talking hair!
The guys discuss the racial discrimination filing against the makeup company Sephora. They also answer, "Can I allow my employees to bring their dogs in the office?" Full Podcast Transcript NASIR: All right, welcome to our podcast where we cover business in the news and answer some of your business legal questions that you, the listener, can send in to ask@legallysoundsmartbusiness.com– that’s an email address and not a web address. So, send in your questions that way. It’s not a phone number either. If you’re calling that, you’re just so off, I don’t even know where to start with you. MATT: Well, I think the— NASIR: Wait. Wait, hold on. Did you just interrupt my intro? MATT: Yeah, I did. NASIR: I’m not done yet. MATT: It wasn’t going anywhere. NASIR: My name is Nasir Pasha. MATT: Mine’s Matt Staub. NASIR: And I was going to say, if they ended up at the web address, it would take them to the spot where they could still submit their question. MATT: I don’t know. NASIR: I think. Yeah, you’re probably right. MATT: Well, didn’t we switch stuff around with the website? NASIR: Yeah. That’s true. If you guys are going there, you’ll be very confused. I don’t know what they’re going to see yet so it’s still in the (00:01:01 unclear). MATT: But the email still works. NASIR: The email still works. MATT: Okay. NASIR: Hopefully, for you guys, it’s pretty much the same. Just ignore what we just said. MATT: I was just thinking out loud. NASIR: We’re going to talk about your favorite topic today, right? Makeup law. MATT: Makeup law, yeah. Well, I don’t know too much about it. NASIR: Didn’t you study it in law school? No? MATT: Was that cosmetology? I think that’s an actual major. NASIR: In law? MATT: No, in real life. NASIR: Oh, yeah, you can get your cosmetology license. MATT: The place next-door to here is, well, I guess that’s more hair. NASIR: That Paul Mitchell school? MATT: I always want to say Paul Walker but that’s the guy from Fast and Furious. Paul Mitchell School of Hair Design. I always think it’s make-up because all the people that go to the school are wearing so much make-up, it doesn’t make sense. They’re probably the people that we’re going to talk about in this story. NASIR: Yeah. MATT: So, I’ll just get into the story. So, Sephora – which is a make-up store because I’ve seen that… NASIR: I know you know about it. Don’t act like you don’t. MATT: I’m going after this recording. So, I guess they have some insider, some VIP-type memberships and they’ll run special deals for them. I think, in this one, it was 20 percent off all products – no limits for a five day period starting November 6. So, running this promotion and they started cutting off some people’s access or shutting down people’s accounts because they thought that they were just buying products in bulk which they call the “grey market.” NASIR: Basically reselling, right? MATT: Resell, yeah. I guess it’s not an illegal product so that’s why it’s not the “black market.” So, they thought these people were buying in bulk so they shut down their account because they said, “Hey, you can’t do that.” Problem is, at least the people that have filed this class action lawsuit say, that’s not the case and they all happen to be women of Chinese descent so they’re claiming racial discrimination. NASIR: Racial discrimination and… MATT: They probably aren’t claiming gender discrimination. I don’t know. They’re claiming the only criteria for cancelling accounts were looking at their names, seeing that they were Asian names or Chinese domain names like qq.com and 163.com which I’ve never even heard of those so I want to know that. NASIR: First of all, this is strange to me because they put this no-limit on their discount or sale and then basically they are getting upset because people are buying too much of it, right? It doesn’t make sense to me. If they wanted a limit then just say “limit one per customer” or what everyone else does, right?
