As we wind down the year, we didn't want to miss the opportunity to look back at some notable tech trends and maybe predict a few, especially those in the ever-growing wearable tech market. Smartwatches are much more common these days, but “wearable” is starting to expand beyond the gadgets you strap to your wrist. Marketplace’s Kimberly Adams spoke with Victoria Song, a wearable technology reviewer for The Verge, who explained what’s on the horizon for this stuff in the coming year.

Guests: Giles Tongue, CEO at Chatable Apps; Andy Bellavia, Director of Market Development at Knowles Corp Topic: The Quest for Near-Zero Latency in Hearables Giles and Andy join Dave this week on the podcast to discuss one of the opportunities that AI-based hearing solutions present, solving speech-in-noise, as well as the biggest challenge that these solutions face, which is latency. For a long time, solving speech-in-noise has been at the top of the list of many hearing professionals' wish lists, and finally, we might be at the onset of a new wave of solutions that can harness the power of artificial intelligence to help solve this issue. These solutions however, rely on complex calculations and processing power, which can cause latency, or a time-delay while the sound is being processed. The three talk through some of the ways and techniques that latency can be reduced to the point where it's indistinguishable by the wearer, and how these kind of solutions might ultimately manifest in the market. Guest: Andy Bellavia (Business Development at Knowles Corp) & Bradley Metrock (CEO of Score Publishing and host of Project Voice) Topic: The Emergence of Voice Panel from Project Voice This episode of the podcast is a recording of the, "Emergence of Hearables" panel from Project Voice. Dave and Andy comprise the panel, which was moderated by Bradley. The three discuss a wide range of hearables + voice technology topics, including the recently announced Bluetooth protocol, Bluetooth LE Audio, and the types of applications that this protocol can facilitate. In addition, they discuss the ways in which voice assistants can be designed to work for hearables and some of the types of hearables-specific voice applications we may see. At the end, the conversation shifts to biometric monitoring, the challenges faced with collecting this type of data, and also the potential for voice assistants to serve as an intelligent aggregator and agent of the data, notifying the user of what's being assessed from the data. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/futureear/message
Guest: Carl Thomas, Founder of Audiowings & Longtime Hearables Enthusiast Topic: Hearables-as-a-Platform Carl joins Dave to discuss a wide range of hearables-specific topics. The two begin with some of the key learnings that Carl has had from his time knowing Nick Hunn, the wireless analyst who coined the term, "hearables." Chief among those learnings was the idea of hearables-as-a-platform, and the type of ongoing experience that these products can provide, beyond the hardware. For example, might we one day see hearing aids unbundled, where one buys the widget and subscribes to the audiometric configuration, aka their "prescription" on a monthly or annual basis? Some of the other topics that the two discuss are why the ear makes so much sense to collect biometric data and what can be done with that type of data. As Carl states, the ear is a, "physiological playground," given the highly unique combination of traits that make it ideal for data collection. Finally, the two discuss a fantastic Twitter thread that Carl posted last year juxtaposing hearables with a famous line from the TV show, Halt & Catch Fire. "Hearables aren't the thing; Hearables are the thing that gives you access to THE thing." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/futureear/message

Guest: Ryan Kraudel, VP Marketing - Valencell Topic: Biometric Sensors + Hearables Dave brings Ryan Kraudel on to talk about the type of biometric sensors that Valencell manufacturers and the various devices that these sensors are being embedded into. Valencell makes optical-based, PPG (photoplethysmogram) sensors that are capable of capturing and measuring a wide-range of biometric health data points. If you've ever seen the green blinking light on the underside of an Apple Watch, that's the PPG sensor capturing one's heart rate data. As the two discuss during the episode, there's been a breakthrough recently with these type of sensors, both in the size of the sensors (allowing for them to be embedded on devices as small as a receiver-in-the-canal hearing aid) and the sophistication of the machine learning algorithms that are used to asses the data. Given the widespread of adoption of consumer wearables and the increasing amount of sensors that are being outfit on these devices, the two talk about how this will give rise to personalized, individual longitudinal health data sets. The health baselines that can be established with consumer wearables and the ability for machine learning algorithms to detect deviations from the baselines, will usher in a much more proactive phase of healthcare. Rather than reacting to the symptoms of being sick, this new combination of technology will allow for Apple Watch, AirPods and other wearable users to be alerted to potential risks being discovered within their data. This is the era of preventative health and as Ryan mentions, we're only beginning to scratch the surface with the types of metrics that we can glean from the broad swath of health data being captured by Valencell's PPG sensors. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/futureear/message
What are hearables? They are wireless earbuds and headphones that provide always-available voice assistant access. Think AirPods, Pixel Buds, Echo Buds, Galaxy buds. At home, you have an always-listening smart speaker but on the go having that just in your phone is a bit limiting. Connecting the voice assistant from a smartphone to your ears creates a more efficient and private interaction. Today we talk about the technology underlying hearables and why we aren't getting 12-hour, all-day battery life. We also discuss applications, consumer adoption, and how the big players intend to compete. 2020 is going to see a lot more hearables action driven by new apps and new products such as AirPods Pro and Amazon Echo Buds. Dave Kemp works for Oaktree products, the leading U.S. distributor of hearing aids and an expert in the hearables space ranging from prescription solutions to consumer products such as AirPods. He is also a contributor to Voicebot.ai on hearables topics and has his own regular podcast and blog called Future Ear. Also, with us is Andy Bellavia. He has a long tenure in the sound and hearing market with past work for consumer hearables innovator Bragi, hearing aid tech company Nuheara and currently as a BD lead for Knowles Corp. — a company that has components in the new Amazon Echo Buds.
Guest: Andy Bellavia Topic: VoiceFirst Hearables Use Cases After discussing the evolving hearables landscape in part one, Andy and Dave now move into some of the new use cases that voice-assistant enabled hearables will begin to offer. One area that seems ripe for some innovation is around audio content consumption and the ways in which we access said content. Episode description:Adrien Schmidt is the CEO and co-founder of Aristotle by Bouquet.ai, a conversational analytics platform that lets you chat with your data through voice and text. Aristotle makes your data available to the whole company, and makes it faster and easier to perform complex queries. In our conversation you'll discover the many benefits of talking with data, and glimpse the ultimate vision of casual data usage in the workplace and the home. We discuss how complex queries are performed over voice, the pros and cons of VUI and GUI, and what the next phase of voice interaction heralds. Then we get into the technical aspects of training an NLP model on custom company data, and the security measures taken to ensure data privacy. This is an especially interesting episode that touches on many important issues in the voice space, and one you won't want to miss! This is a time-limited preview. To hear the full episode, and access the full catalogue of episodes and bonus content, become a Voice Tech Pro https://voicetechpodcast.com/proHighlights from the show:Why do people need to talk with their data? It democratises access to data, and makes complex queries faster and easier. AI + BI = CI, the equation of the future. Building a CI using AI + BI What's the vision of data access in organisations? Casual data usage over the entire day will become a habit. How to voice activate any structured data source? Use Aristotle to train an NLP model on it, then gain access to the key information in it. How are complex queries performed over voice? They are built up in stages over the course of a dialogue, not given all at once as with traditional search apps. What's the symbiotic relationship between VUI and GUI? Surprise: GUI aspects like charts and buttons are not the most important Is multi-modal really essential, or a stepping stone to a truly voice-only interaction? For enterprises: really essential, but we can envision voice-only use cases like doctors What are the advantages of conversational interfaces? Can quickly access many available options by asking, versus trawling through a complex GUI. By condensing information to the essentials, you enable ease of understanding and speed of access. What are the advantages of using a GUI? Can provide reassurance of correct capture of request, and accuracy of voice answer. What’s the next phase of voice interaction? Hearables will allow us to do real work with voice interfaces. The major challenges in VUI/GUI design? Trust level, confidence, finding the right number of words for the response, NLP and Search complexities How does Aristotle keep client data secure? Uses in-database analytics to avoid pooling client data externally. In this episode, Teri welcomes Dave Kemp, a leader in the intersection between voice first technology and hearables. He is part of a company called Oak Tree Products and they provide medical supplies and devices to the hearing technology industry. He also has a blog called FuturEar.co where he documents the rapid technological breakthroughs that are occurring in the hearables niche, including biometric sensors and voice assistants that are being incorporated into the hearable devices.Key Points from Dave KempIn a voice first world, in order for there to be an efficient exchange of information, a person involved in that communication exchange has to be able to hearWhere hearables are going in a world where we are rapidly adopting voice technology.FuturEar.coThe blog is about telling stories around innovative use cases for new in-the-ear devices.A lot of new things can be done with Bluetooth connected audio devices. In the ear devices will continue to become more computerized and become more like stand-alone computers. The Voice First/Hearing First worldData shows that one of the fastest growing demographics for smart assistant usage is the older population.Hearing loss is a prevalent problem and presents a challenge because people with hearing loss can’t hear Alexa. There can be an amplification solution in a hearing aid and then Alexa can be ported into it. That will not only improve accessibility but also empower people with hearing loss by enabling them to have complete control over their environment. The older population is poised to be the early adopters of the in-the-ear voice first technology. The functions of smartphones will be migrated gradually to smart assistants.Developments in the hearing assistant devices nicheAmazon released the “Alexa Mobile Accessory Kit” in 2017.The kit offers a new way to bring Alexa to portable, on-the-go devices such as hearables and more. The kit enables OEMs to add Alexa to their devices with minimum investment in hardware or integration efforts.Qualcomm just announced more ways their chips can be used to embed Alexa into devices.Smart assistants will facilitate the creation of smart homes where the older population can live independently without the need to move into a retirement home.Numerous new biometric sensors are constantly being embedded into in-the-ear devices. The sensors can track fitness and detect different things.PPG sensors (embedded in hearing aids and other hearables) that can identify blood pressure, heart rate, and other things are expected to come up. A PPG sensor is the optical sensor that, for example, an Apple watch uses to record a person’s heart rate. The first biometric sensors were being embedded in hearing aids since early 2018.A biometric sensor manufacturer and sensor supplier to the hearing aid OEMs has announced that they will have a commercially available PPG sensor by 2019 so the OEMs can implement them into their devices. The largest challenge to overcome with all the developments going on is privacy and security. The Meaning of Voice First Health to DaveThere are so many efficiencies to be had here. The area for improvement is all the clerical work in the actual medical setting from how doctors record notes to the healthcare administration processes.Capitalizing on the new efficiencies to make the whole medical system more efficient. He thinks the smart assistant will eventually be a person’s personal nurse. Through voice analyzation they will be able to understand a person’s state of health. Amazon has a patent based on Alexa being able to tell if a person is sick based on the inflection of their voice and it would prompt them to seek medical help.Links and Resources in this EpisodeDave’s BlogDave on TwitterDr. Teri Fisher on TwitterDr. Teri Fisher on LinkedInPlease leave a review on iTunes See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
