In today's episode we make a prediction: That Vice President Kamala Harris will win Michigan in 2024 and that Elissa Slotkin will win the U.S. Senate race, too. We might be wrong — but this is not just based on thin air. We take our experience, the data we do have, and put it all together to analyze things how they stand. We think, from a lens being in Metro Detroit and Michigan, and respectfully, that some in the media like Steve Kornacki, Harry Enten, Dan Pfeiffer, and others may have missed a key indicator when trying to analyze this race. Steve Friess has been a freelance journalist for the New York Times, Newsweek, Politico and many others. But this isn't his first rodeo. He was the guy who first reported the contentious butterfly ballot story in 2000, for instance. Jer has been talking about local politics for years and is a regular attendee of policy conferences. He did the final interview of Former U.S. Senator Carl Levin before his death for HOUR Magazine, and has had conversations on the show with numerous local officeholders over the years. Fearless local media need local support to survive. Join our Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/DailyDetroit Also, our Studio Open House is this Saturday! Mr. Terrific was cancelled after half a season, but… was it really a terrible show? Is star Stephen Strimpell partly to blame? This time, we push back on Thirteen Week Theatre's take on Strimpell, consider why pill popping was such a common way to get superpowers in the Sixties, and the show's …. agressive … laugh track. Also, were the network execs commissioning superhero sitcoms really trying to imitate Batman, or just cash in? Plus, The Music Within's bass guitar cover of the Batman theme, more from Adam and Burt on Hour Magazine, and e-mail from our listeners! Excerpt from Outré magazine's Stephen Strimpell interview (ilovegetsmart.com)
This time we look at the other sitcom that tried to cash in on Batman, CBS's Mr. Terrific. It's goofier than Captain Nice and not as funny (although the laugh track clearly doesn't think that!), but with a surprisingly good cast. We discuss the unaired pilot, and the first 8 episodes of the 17-episode series, which is quite different from the pilot, with an utterly different cast and different situation for Mr. T's alter ego, Stanley Beamish. Plus: Max Diaz Music's “punk” version of the theme, Adam and Burt appearing on Hour Magazine in 1984, and your response to our discussion of the Batman cast reunion on Fox's Late Night with Ross Shafer, in episode 211!

Christine Jorgensen began gender reassignment surgery in Copenhagen on 24th September 1951. The New York Daily News later heralded the event with a headline splash - “Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty!” - thereby creating America's first transgender celebrity.Writing to friends, she said: “As you can see by the enclosed photos, taken just before the operation, I have changed a great deal. But it is the other changes that are so much more important. Remember the shy, miserable person who left America? Well, that person is no more and, as you can see, I'm in marvellous spirits.”In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how surprisingly tolerant her parents and much of the media were; how she was strong-armed into showbiz but used the notoriety to campaign for trans rights; and reveal that - amongst her many memoirs - she also penned a Scandinavian cookbook...Further Reading:• ‘Christine Jorgensen – Queer Icon' (Queer Icons, 2020): https://queericons.home.blog/2020/02/27/christine-jorgensen/• ‘The Hour Magazine with Gary Collins: guest Christine Jorgensen' (1980s): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDlGUeF1Bg0• ‘Dec. 1, 1952: Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty' (WIRED, 2010): https://www.wired.com/2010/12/1201first-sex-change-surgery/For bonus material and to support the show, visit Patreon.com/RetrospectorsWe'll be back on Monday! Joey Stuckey is an award-winning blind guitarist, songwriter, singer, composer, producer, radio and television personality, music columnist, educator and sound engineer. He is also the official music ambassador for his home town of Macon Georgia. Joey's guitar style is reminiscent of rocker Jeff Beck and jazzer Wes Montgomery, while his vocal influences range from Mel Torme to Gregg Allman. As an infant, Joey lost his sight and sense of smell as the result of a brain tumor and was introduced to music from an early age. His mother enjoyed opera, while his dad enjoyed country music. When he was 13, Stuckey developed pneumonia and eventually had to be home schooled for an entire year. "I lived for my shows on Saturdays," says Joey. "I was a huge fan of public radio and on Saturdays, I listened to a show called, 'After Space.' It was DJ'd and produced by a guy called Rob Thomas (who eventually became a good friend and is still a great friend today). He would play radio shows like, 'The Lone Ranger,' 'The Shadow,' and other classic shows. I was so enamored with these stories - the sound effects and narration broadcast in a format accessible for the blind were just amazing." The show was produced so eloquently, Joey decided that sound production was what he wanted to do with his life. What began as a simple statement turned into a life-long passion. After that evolutionary period in his life, Joey bought all kinds of sound equipment and was soon recording sessions in his house with various garage bands. He was amazed at the writing ability from the many musicians he came across. "I realized, at that point, that there were things I wanted to share with the world," says Stuckey. "And I knew that the medium for that was music." Without missing a beat, Joey graduated from high school at the age of 14 and at 17, began his musical career by taking classical guitar lessons from noted music professor Terry Cantwell. Joey went on to attend Mercer University. He furthered his musical education by studying with renowned jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan and later, with Professor Steven Crowell. Despite his physical limitations, Joey has flourished in every aspect of his life. He released several albums, including 'Take A Walk In The Shadows' (1995), 'Ironies, Pain And The Light That Guides' (1999), 'Live And Stuff,' (2000), 'Live And More Stuff,' (2001), 'So Far,' (2003), 'Oceanside,' (2009), 'The Shadow Sound,' (2011), 'Mixture' (2012) and 'The Acoustic Sessions, Volume I' (2014). Joey experienced national success with the launch of 'Mixture,' which reached #9 on the CMJ Top 40 Jazz Charts for North America. In 2002, Joey met his wife, Jennifer, who works as a certified nurse midwife in Macon. He is also the owner and sound engineer of a recording facility, Shadow Sound Studio in Macon, which boasts vintage analog gear and state-of-the-art digital technology. Joey enjoys promoting music in various ways. He is a featured music columnist for the webzine 'Portal Magazine' and contributes regularly to a music blog on 'Gateway Macon,' where he writes about the history of music in Macon and other music-related topics. Joey is currently involved with students, instructing them on guitar, voice, music theory, and sound engineering. He is the professor of Music Technology at Mercer University and an official mentor for the Recording Connections School in Los Angeles. No stranger to musical theater, he was the music director for Macon State College's production of 'The Rocky Horror Show' in the fall of 2002. Recently, Joey has taken on the role of music publisher and has a growing catalog of great songs in multiple genres. His publishing companies include Sociology Publishing (BMI) and Sign Wave Publishing (ASCAP). Joey and his band, The Joey Stuckey Band, perform nationally. They have opened for legendary artists such as TED NUGENT, BAD COMPANY, TRISHA YEARWOOD, JAMES BROWN, CLARENCE CARTER, WET WILLIE, THE B-52'S, KEVIN KINNEY FROM DRIVIN' N CRYIN, and SMASHMOUTH. In his other roles as either producer, composer, music columnist, and sound engineer or hired musician, Joey has worked with musical greats including GEORGE THOROGOOD, ALAN PARSONS (PINK FLOYD, THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT), ROSS HOGARTH (PRODUCER FOR VAN HALEN, JOHN MELLENCAMP, BONNIE RAITT), BILLY DUFF (THE CULT), JOE SOLO (PRODUCER FOR MACY GRAY), DANNY SERAPHINE (CHICAGO), BEN TUCKER (HERBIE MANN), DAVID RAGSDALE (KANSAS, SMASHING PUMPKINS), ALLEN VIZZUTTI (CHICK COREA BAND), SAMMY NESTICO (COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA), DAVID BERGER (ARRANGER AND CONDUCTOR FOR JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER, ARRANGER FOR NATALIE COLE, ROSEMARY CLOONEY, MADELEINE PEYROUX AND CECILE MCLORIN SALEANT), SHANNON FOREST (TOTO, TAYLOR SWIFT, RASCAL FLATTS), CHARLIE HOSKYNS (THE POPES), PAUL MCGUINNESS (THE POGUES), WILL MORRISON (MODERN ENGLISH), CHUCK LEAVELL, RANDALL BRAMBLETT (TRAFFIC, GREG ALLMAN), HUGHIE THOMASSON (FROM LYNYRD SKYNARD AND THE OUTLAWS), JIMMY HERRING (FROM THE AQUARIUM RESCUE UNIT, FROG WING, THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND, AND THE OTHERS/GRATEFUL DEAD), MIKE MILLS from R.E.M and many, many others. In short, Joey is a young man with an enormous talent, clear vision, and a tireless work ethic, who is well respected by his peers, fans, and more than a few legends. Joey released his new single, 'Blind Man Drivin' in London, England on March 12, 2015 during his Spring tour. Christine Jorgensen never intended to become a celebrity. In 1951, Jorgensen traveled to Europe to obtain special permission to undergo a series of operations, which would help complete her medical transition from male to female, becoming the first American woman to publicly receive this type of surgery. When she returned to the states, the New York Daily News wrote about her under the headline: ’EX GI BECOMES BLONDE BEAUTY.’ Christine’s public persona marked a significant, though often fraught, step towards normalizing transgender identities in the US, and she came to embrace her role as a pioneer within the transgender community. But her story is still unknown to many and the fight is far from over. Jo talks about the state of transgender rights with the National Press Secretary of the Human Rights Campaign, Sarah McBride, one of the many activists working today to continue the work Christine began. “Safe and Effective Management of Pain and Addiction” was presented on January 22, 2019; by Carl Christensen, MD, Ph.D., D-FASAM; and Mark A. Weiner, MD, D-FASAM. The Institute of Medicine estimates around a 100 million Americans suffer with chronic pain, and it’s estimated that about 10% of our population has or has had a substance use disorder. MARGIE FRIEDMAN has produced hundreds of hours of non-fiction television and is now producing her own independent documentary films. Her film Conducting Hope profiles inmates at the Lansing Correctional Facility in Kansas who make up the only men's prison choir in the United States that performs outside prison walls. (41:21) EPISODE NOTES: Many of the people I’ve worked with in the non-fiction TV business didn’t go to film school. I didn’t. But MARGIE FRIEDMAN did. As Margie tells me in MARGE AND IN CHARGE, she did not find out until after she had applied just how selective the UCLA film and television program was (she was one of 19 applicants accepted that year). “If I had known that, I wouldn’t have done it.” Margie says going to UCLA did three things for her. First, it confirmed that she wanted to be a writer, producer and director. Second, it gave her hands-on experience in telling a story visually. Her student film “The Beautiful Ones Aren’t Yet Born” won a Jim Morrison Film Award. (The Doors frontman also studied film at UCLA.) Third, and most important, a professor helped her get an internship at KABC News. Jerry Dunphy (“From the desert to the sea, to all of Southern California, a good evening”) was the top anchor at Channel 7 back then. Dunphy, of course, is considered to be the inspiration for Ted Baxter on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and Kent Brockman on "The Simpsons." That newsroom internship turned into a paying job for Margie and she worked for 2 years at the station as an assistant to the consumer reporter assignment editor and working on the assignment desk. After 2 more years as a planning editor working at KNXT (now KCBS), Margie decided she didn’t want to make local news her career. Talk shows became a big part of Margie’s life over the next several years, 7 of them spent on “Hour Magazine” with Gary Collins. Lots of celebrity interaction on that show. Mike Wallace and Bette Midler were just 2 of the celeb segments that Margie produced on the daily syndicated show. But her very favorite was Mary Martin. Margie brought her childhood “Peter Pan” album to the studio that day and asked the Broadway star to sign it – the only autograph she’s ever asked for. Another big MM came into Margie’s professional life later on: Mickey Mouse. Her former boss from “Hour Magazine” convinced her to move to Orlando for a couple months to help him get “The All New Mickey Mouse Club” up and running. But 2 months turned into 2 and a half years before Margie finally said “M-I-C … See you real soon.” Plenty of fond memories, though, including working with Mouseketeer Keri Russell who’s all grown up now and starring in “The Americans." And what’s Margie up to these days? After getting paid to write and produce hundreds of hours of television, she’s now producing her own independent documentary films. Her first doc is called “Conducting Hope” and it’s an inspiring look at the only men’s prison choir in the United States that performs outside prison walls. Having filmed in prisons in 20 states myself, I really enjoyed talking with Margie about this particular project and the inmates she profiled. Margie’s now busy with another film called “Orchestrating Change,” which is about the world’s first orchestra made up of musicians with mental illnesses and those who support them.
