WARNING: We discuss sexual assault in this episode! This week all the bases are loaded and misogyny is up to bat in Tanya Rosenberg's BLOOD GAMES!!! Starring Laura Albert, Lee Benton, Paula Manga, Sabrina Hills, Gregory Scott Cummins and George “Buck” Flowers, Blood Games is about a touring women's baseball team who absolutely destroy a team of rednecks in a game. They don't take kindly to losing and when an Army Ranger's son is killed after trying to sexually assault two of the players, his father demands revenge and a posse of these drunk redneck idiots hunts them down. Babe and the Ballgirls can definitely hold their own and it becomes an all-out war. We absolutely loved this movie! The baseball team is all very distinct characters, it's a great nod to I Spit on Your Grave, it looks fantastic and it's suspenseful. YOU'RE A DEAD MOTHER-!!!

Our month of Summer Horror continues with a combination that would seem to live in infamy. What happens with the director of one of the most notorious found footage films teams with the villain of some of the most infamous female revenge movies of all time? And why had none of us ever heard of it?We also talk about a feminist fable that is a good idea in theory, but misses a little in the execution. The Exorcist is one of the most familiar and iconic horror movies of all time. It is a shame that its sequels have been underappreciated at best. A sequel is in the works and we talk about why this one just may work. We also discuss the cryptic teaser for the next A24 horror movie.Scales is marketed as a feminist fable in a dystopian society. That is not entirely correct, but it definitely deals with taking on a patriarchal society. We talk about delivering a message effectively, strong female characters, and if style over substance can work.Summer Horror Month continues with a look at 1986's Body Count. The title may be generic, but when you have director Ruggero Deodato  of Cannibal Holocaust and David Hess from I Spit on Your Grave, there is no way you are going to get your run of the mill 80s slasher. It's hard to see where the characters go wrong in the film Stage Fright. Was it making a modern dance adaptation of I Spit on Your Grave?  Was it seeking  medical attention for a sore ankle instead of just keeping off it for a while? Was it seeking that medical attention at Italy's version of Arkham Asylum? Was it having an inexplicable owl mask? Was it all the barrels of burning trash in a building with only two exits, both of which lock from the outside? It's impossible to say. What we can say is that what comes out is possibly the most brilliant parody of Italian horror ever. Or just a big pile of whackadoo nonsense that rules. So snuggle up with your pet lion-fish, tie yourself to the bed with your best torn sheets, and enjoy the best argument for defunding the Italian police ever filmed, Stage Fright.

We have to thank a supporter/friend that we've yet to meet, Jerry, who sent us kind of a suggestion for this topic. On one of his daily walks, he took a picture of a plaque on the side of the Evergreen Theatre. It was commemorating the 1969 Miss Memphis Review pageant. Having not ever heard of this, we decided we'd investigate and thus it became our Pride Month episode. The Miss Memphis Review, which later came to be known as the Miss Gay Memphis, began as a protest to the city ordinance that banned crossdressing. But let's take a step back in time to talk about the aforementioned theatre location before we get to the pageant. The current Evergreen Theatre has gone through a few owners and name changes over the years. We'll start at the beginning, in 1927 (or 1928), the Ritz Theatre was built as a 900 seat movie theatre. It showed mainstream films and foreign films. It remained so until around 1955, when there was a fire and it was damaged. When rebuilt, it became known as the Memphis Guild Art Theatre. It was still showing foreign films but by the 60s, when Bill Kendall began running it, the shows became a little edgier.  The Guild Theatre showed what people would consider arthouse films. They were foreign films, LGBTQ films, and other films the city considered illegal “smut”. Kendall was known for bringing eccentric movies to his theatres, he had another theatre on Highland that had midnight showings of the most controversial films, actual gay films. The flamboyant cinephile was even indicted on several indecency charges, luckily they were eventually dropped.  Bill Kendall So who was William “Bill” Kendall? Well, we know he was born in Memphis and attended Southwestern College, which is now Rhodes. He was also a WWII veteran.   I can only imagine what it would be like to be a gay soldier during WWII. According to a Memphis Flyer article, he was unafraid to be loud and proud about being gay.  When Kendall managed the Guild, it became, as he called it, a safe space for self expression. Clearly, he was not afraid to show movies that were considered controversial. When he showed “I Spit on Your Grave”, it caused “one of the most hotly contested obscenity cases in Memphis.”  I've not ever seen that movie, so I looked up the plot to see what all the hubbub was about. That being said, look up the 1959 film, not the 70s film because that is a waaaay different story.  According to the TMC website this is the synopsis of the film...  Joe Grant is a vengeful light-skinned black man who leaves Memphis (MS) and moves to a small town in New Jersey after his brother is brutally lynched for attempting to marry a white woman. Joe's skin is so light that he is able to pass himself off as Caucasian and find work in a local bookstore. To get revenge on white society, Joe seduces a rich young white girl and then plots her death. At the same time, Joe discovers that the bookstore where he works is a front for an extortion ring. A short time passes and he finds himself falling in love with the girl. She too loves him until she learns that he is of African descent. Knowing this complicates matters (she is engaged to another man), but loving him just the same, she suggests they run away together to avoid the blackmailers. After Joe is beaten by the blackmailers, he decides this is a good idea and together the lovers flee. Back in town, the girls enraged fiance organizes a posse loudly claiming that Joe has abducted the girl and plans to rape her. Tragedy ensues just as the fugitive lovers are about to cross the Mason-Dixon Line. It doesn't seem too scandalous to me, but the 60s were a different time. So in an odd twist of events, the outcome of showing this movie did, however, put an end to Tennessee's obscenity law that had been in place for 106 years. Guess they didn't think it too scandalous either.  Ok, so back to the theatre and Mr. Kendall stirring up some “good trouble”.

Queer Horror Actor and Film Maker Roger Conners "The Scream Queer" joins Dotty and Ghoulia to talk about his work in indie horror, the importance to queer representation in horror, and to show Dotty and Ghoulia his glistening collar bone. Recognized as one of Cleveland Ohio's premier independent film actors, Roger Conners has become a well-known name within the cult-horror scene after appearing in a wide array of widely publicized b-horror classics. Born in Westlake, Ohio, an upper-class suburb located less than twenty minutes outside of Cleveland, he grew up with an intense passion for acting and the arts. After expressing interest in working on camera, he was quickly cast in a leading role in 529 Films "Hellementary: An Education in Death". Earning significant attention both within Cleveland and beyond, the film went on to have its national television premiere in 2010. Upon the films success, Roger decided to focus mainly on acting within the horror genre. After appearing in an array of independent horror films he was dubbed as being horrors first "Scream Queer", a spin on the classic term "Scream Queen". Since the release of his early projects, Roger has gone on to secure major roles in multiple recognizable films such as "Chill: The Killing Games", "The Colours of Desire", "Fighting the Sky", "Rebirth", "Mother Krampus 2: Slay Ride", and most recently the role of Dylan Revis in Eddie Lengyel's "American Poltergeist: The Curse of Lilith Ratchet". - IMDb Mini Biography So lower the lights, light some candles, and prepare to be terrrified by another episode of I Spit in Your Mouth: an ooky spooky podcast. The Parallax Views #HalloweenPodcastMassacre continues as the 13 O'Clock Podcast's Jenny Ashford returns to discuss her new game design venture Giallo Games, based on the 70 Italian horror/thriller movies of the 60s-80s, and spooky cases from her three volume book series The Faceless Villain: A Collection of the Eeriest Unsolved Murders of the 20th Century. We begin the discussion by talking about horror movies and Jenny's various board games based on giallos, or Italian murder mystery thrillers, like Dario Argento's Suspiria (arguably not a giallo but it gets lumped in) and Mario Bava's Blood and Black Lace. We talk about two games in particular, The Three Sorrows and A Crimson Drop on a Crystal Palette. We also talk about the various giallos that Jenny is a fan of like All the Colors of the Dark starring Euro-starlet Edwige Fenech and Lucio Fulci's The Psychic. And, of course, we take a detour to talk about the greatness of John Carpenter. And we note how Mario Bava's Bay of Blood aka Twitch of the Death Nerve is a proto-slasher as well as chatting about the weirdness of Dario Argento's cinematic collaborations with his daughter Asia Argento.Additionally, we talk about women in horror fandom and why women are attracted to the genre despite it's penchant for misogyny. In this regard we also discuss rape/revenge films like I Spit on Your Grave and Abel Ferrara's Ms. 45. Is there something cathartic about such films for some female viewers? We talk about how I Spit on Your Grave is completely unglamorous in it's depiction of violence against women whereas many films of its type glamorize said violence. We also talk about how horror films have been influenced by women and in this regard mention how Daria Nicolodi was instrumental in the early film's of her former husband Dario Argento. Then we pivot to the real-life horror of unsolved murders that Jenny writes about in the 3 volumes of The Faceless Villain trilogy. First, of course, we delve into how Jenny got the title for the series. Then we discuss a question that immediately pops up for readers of the trilogy: Why Iowa? In other words, why do so many cold cases occur in the mid-west. This leads us to a discussion of the Black Dahlia case and the theories of Steve Hodel, son of Black Dahlia murder suspect George Hodel. Additionally, we talk about ax murders and why they're connected to so many unsolved murders in the early 20th century. From there we delve into a potpourri of different cases from the trilogy including:- Unsolved murders that have been tied into the JFK assassination conspriacy theories, specifically the shooting of JFK's alleged mistress, who may have introduced the late President to LSD, Mary Pinochet Myers- Lover's lane murders and how they're not just something you see in movies or urban legends. In this regard we talk about the Texarkana Moonlight Murders and the movie The Town That Dreaded Sundown; this leads to an odd sidetrack conversation about the Amityville Horror and paranormal investigator Ed and Lorraine Warren, now famous for one of their investigations being the basis of The Conjuring- The murder of Larry Peyton and Beverly Allan; the potential connection of "The Serial Killer You've Never Heard Of" Edward Wayne Edwards; the problem with trying to close cold cases with characters like Edward Wayne Edwards or Henry Lee Lucas- Jane murders including the Lady of the Dunes case and it's potential connection to Steve Spielberg's Jaws thanks to... Stephen King's son Joe Hill? Yep. you read that right; oh, and one of the suspects is the notorious mobster Whitey Bulger- The gruesome cases of the Houston Icebox murders, the Tattington suitcase murder, the Pink Socks/Fred the Head murder, and the Nude in the Nettles- Hitchhikers murders including the Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders whose suspects include Ted Bundy, the Zodiac Killer, the Hillside Stranglers- Unsolved disappearances; the chilling case of Tara Calico's disappearance and the polaroid photos found that may or may not show or tied up along with a young boy- The Smiley Face murders, the so-called "Manchester Pusher", and conspiracy theories This Episode Brought to You By:The War State:The Cold War Origins of the Military-Industrial Complex and the Power Elite, 1945-1963byMichael SwansonofThe Wall Street Window

We saw Possessor Uncut, which is a new flick released in 2020, and wow, what a disturbing masterpiece. This came highly recommended to us by our hard-fucking artist, Dustin Goebel, and I was not let down.  @dgoebel00 on Instagram provided this amazing artwork. Follow him and check out his website. (1:25) - Intro(6:18) - Trailer(8:23) - Synopsis(10:26) - Review(15:07) - Score(36:41) - Spoilers(1:37:34) - Killcount(1:48:00) - Horror Movie Talk Whoooores(2:20:15) - Outro https://youtu.be/D0Gh9nOIV3w Synopsis Possessor Uncut follows Tasya (Andrea Riseborough), who is the most incredible mercenary for hire ever.  She works for a secret organization that uses brain-implant tech to put her consciousness into the bodies of people who can get close to important people - aka targets. Her job is to inhabit the consciousness of strangers, take control of their body, and use their body to assassinate people for, presumably, very rich corporations and clients. As we follow Tasya, we learn that she is the best at what she does, but also that there seems to be a time-limit on how long you can possess others before there is a danger that you can lose yourself in the process. As the movie progresses, we get a real look into what makes us empathetic humans, and the real ramifications of our actions if we let our moral compass slip for too long.  Review Possessor Uncut is directed by Brandon Cronenberg and is more than just an interesting concept, it’s the complete package. Tremendous effort has gone into setting the dark/sad mood, and Possessor Uncut presents some very fucked up ideas into what seems like a not-so-distant, real future. Possessor UncutWatch it on AmazonBuy Now The acting and film-craft is stellar, but the imagery and ideas in this movie are so much more depraved than even the most intense gore-porn entry, because it seems like we aren’t far off from this being a potential reality. There were parts in this movie where I actually covered my eyes because I was fearful that I would see something that I couldn’t unsee.  This is definitely an artistic film, but it doesn’t hang its hat on the art. It really stands on the concept that it presents, which is the loss of privacy, and the danger of losing control of one’s self. Our inherent lean toward the voyueristic can result in the loss of self, and that may be the scariest and most insidious thing I can imagine.  Score 10/10 Final Recommendation If you like disturbing ideas and visuals, it doesn’t get a lot more crazy than this unless you are talking about the fringe-type movies like A Serbian Film or I Spit on Your Grave. This is a well-made movie with some incredible concepts, watch it. https://www.horrormovietalk.com/2018/11/21/hereditary-review/
