Men hvordan ser fremtiden ud? In today's show, I sit down again with Dr. Anton Krige, who is a medical doctor, multiple Ironman finisher, and functional medicine specialist. In this episode, we dive deep into what it's like to work closely with Anton and how he transforms his patient's health and well-being. We used me as the case study in this one and it was eye-opening to get the results back from some of the tests I did (particularly finding out that my biological age is 29 which isn't bad for a 40-something guy). And there were plenty of other fascinating insights I found out about which I've been able to integrate into my daily routine. Anton treats those with complex chronic conditions as well as those who wish to optimise sports performance whilst maintaining health & wellness using his research skills and experience to incorporate cutting-edge research findings in both health and exercise physiology. Anton was previously on the show in episode 68 in case anyone wants to hear a more wide-ranging interview on health and some of the key lifestyle factors for transforming it, the latest tech you can use to improve your health as well as what an ideal day looks like to turn around your metabolic health. Mario Daniels is the DAAD Fachlektor at the Duitsland Instituut at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses on the history of the political economy of sharing (and denying) knowledge in the field of high technology in the international relations since World War I. Specifically, Daniels works on a political history of economic espionage in the United States and Germany in the 20th century. Moreover, he is an expert for the history of the U.S. export control systems that regulates high technology trade since 1945. Daniels has recently published articles on U.S. national security controls over foreign direct investment, the interplay of export controls with visa denials for scientists in the Cold War, and the role of secrecy and export controls in U.S. basic and applied science. John Krige is the Kranzburg Professor Emeritus in the School of History and Sociology at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the intersection between science, technology and foreign policy. Since being at Georgia Tech he has expanded his interest beyond the study of intergovernmental organizations in Western Europe to include an analysis of American and European relations during the cold war. His first monograph to develop that interest was American Hegemony and the Postwar Reconstruction of Science in Europe. He is the author of several additional books, including Sharing Knowledge, Shaping Europe, and the editor of Knowledge Flows in a Global Age: A Transnational Approach. Together Dr. Daniels and Dr. Krige are the co-authors of the book Knowledge Regulation and National Security in Postwar America, which is the subject of our conversation today.

In the latest Talking Strange, we are joined by SHE WILL director Charlotte Colbert, and star Alice Krige. Opening in theaters and on IFC Midnight July 15, 2022, SHE WILL is an atmospheric gothic-tinged horror movie, and feminist fairy tale about aging actor Veronics Ghent (Alice Krige) goes to a healing retreat in rural Scotland following a mastectomy, and joined by her young nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt). With her own identity in doubt, Veronica starts to confront past traumas endured on movie sets. The two women develop an unlikely bond as mysterious supernatural forces of the wilderness — and the witches executed on the land 300 years ago — give Veronica the power to enact revenge. In the interview, Krige and Colbert talk about the parallels between #MeToo and witch trials, as well as the involvement of horror icon Dario Argento (who serves as executive producer), and actor Malcolm McDowell. We need to support social impact work now more than ever. For the sake of our environment, for our health and wellbeing, we need people working to make a difference. Unfortunately, work for the good of others isn't always work that pays. How can we sustain social and environmental work in the long term? In this episode, we speak with Kerryn Krige, a specialist in social entrepreneurship, about new economic models for social impact and solidarity. Knowledge Regulation and National Security in Postwar America (University of Chicago Press, 2022) is the first historical study of export control regulations as a tool for the sharing and withholding of knowledge. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Mario Daniels and Dr. John Krige set out to show the enormous political relevance that export control regulations have had for American debates about national security, foreign policy, and trade policy since 1945. Indeed, they argue that from the 1940s to today the issue of how to control the transnational movement of information has been central to the thinking and actions of the guardians of the American national security state. They argue that every single day beginning in the 1940s, US export controls have intervened in the global sharing of scientific-technological knowledge. The expansion of control over knowledge and know-how is apparent from the increasingly systematic inclusion of universities and research institutions into a system that in the 1950s and 1960s mainly targeted business activities. As this book vividly reveals, classification was not the only—and not even the most important—regulatory instrument that came into being in the postwar era. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.

It's Christmas in July! (There is a non-zero chance we selected this episode just so we could make this joke.) While we're on summer break, re-replay one of our silliest selections. And a warm hello again to the Krige-hive. Original show notes: Is it three weeks after Christmas? Sure. Is Brie's choice of a movie she's only seen twice a bit of a stretch for the purported rules of this podcast? Maybe. Does Chris maintain a steady scream and drop a hundred F-bombs for some reason? You bet. Nonetheless, join us on another profanity-laden journey through a modern classic that explores the value of a free press, the limits of a monarch's legislative purview, and the feasibility of stealth pursuit on horseback. Christian Walters (The Survivor Typecast, and The Burlington Friendship Society podcast) joins me to discuss the 1981 horror film GHOST STORY. Starring an amazing cast featuring Fred Astaire, Douglas Fairbanks Jr, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, Patricia Neal and (fresh from Chariots of Fire) Alice Krige. Craig Wasson takes on dual roles as Don and David Wanderly. It's got greasy rotten corpses, flapping falling penis shots, and John Houseman telling ghost stories. What's not to love? We also discuss the book by Peter Straub, which is an incredible Lovecraftian tale of much more depth and with many more ghost stories in it.
This week we have a New Year Special Edition on Improving Performance and Health. Dr. Anton Krige is a medical doctor, multiple Ironman finisher, and functional medicine specialist. This is a fascinating conversation regarding the simple (and not so simple!) things that we can do to help promote health and performance in a busy and demanding world. In his own words:"I have been an endurance athlete for over thirty years and in my quest to maintain my performance as an ageing athlete with minimal time to exercise I implemented significant changes to my approach to nutrition along with targeted supplementation and many other lifestyle interventions over the past 5 years. Not only did I feel much better after introducing the changes but various symptoms which I had chalked up to normal ageing simply disappeared including a joint pain of more than two decades duration. I now have consistent energy and focus, sleep better and recover faster than ever from intense exercise. This led me to extensive self-study, using my research skills as an experienced clinician researcher, about the underlying causes of chronic disease & how to discover & address these causes. It was during this quest that I discovered the logical evidence -based principles of functional medicine & the obvious value of this approach. Not only are many patients with unexplained symptoms given a "functional illness" label & treated as having psychological/psychiatric problems but are treated with medication which may introduce side effects. On the other hand I have encountered patients who have self-healed from various conditions using changes in nutrition and/or supplements. Unfortunately the current medical model does not have sufficient consultation time per patient, has little knowledge of the latest nutritional research and does not recognise the power of these interventions yet.’You can find out more about Dr. Krige at his website: https://www.bestyou-functionalhealthclinic.co.uk/about.htmlDisclaimer: Dr Krige has stated that nothing said in the podcast should be construed as personal medical advice and is just for general information. Derudover anmeldelse af bl.a. danske 'Madklubben'. As a rugby player he was tougher than complex quantum physics and more courageous than a wounded lion. He captained the Springboks 18 times and played 39 Tests at a time when Bok rugby was in a deep state of flux and going through coaches as quickly as Cheslin Kolbe goes through defenses. The enduring image of Corne Krige is one of a bloodied and bruised, but never cowed, player. He played every game as if it were his last – sometimes, by his own admission, stepping over the line whether in Western Province, Stormers or Springbok colours. Since retirement he has carved out a successful business career and stays fit on his mountain bike. Corne also keeps a close eye on rugby from the outside and is still passionate about WP and the Springboks. On the Maverick Sports Podcast he talks about the past, present and future of South African rugby and typically, pulls no punches.

TechCentral — In this episode, Duncan McLeod interviews Absa Group CIO Wilhelm Krige about the mammoth project, now mostly completed, of separating the banking giant's IT systems from former parent Barclays. The total cost of the separation amounted to R17.5-billion, with Barclays paying R12.6-billion to help fund it. Much of this spend went to the IT project involved in separating the systems of the two banking giants, with a significant amount also earmarked to marketing costs associated with the rebranding to Absa. In the podcast, Krige talks about the scope of the IT separation, the complexity involved, how the group got it right with only a few hiccups along the way, and how it has positioned Absa for future innovation and growth. He covers the milestones achieved during the project and what he'd do differently with the benefit of hindsight. He also talks about the involvement of regulators in the project and why they had to be kept regularly updated on the progress. Lastly, Krige explains the impact of the Covid-19 lockdown, both on this project and on the bank more broadly. It's fascinating discussion about one of South Africa's biggest-ever IT projects with one of the country's leading CIOs. Don't miss it!
Retired Springboks captain Corné Krige says he used to be an angry man but rugby taught him discipline and to “sort his own problems out”. Krige talks about what he has been up to post his rugby career. See omnystudio.com/policies/listener for privacy information.

First we join General Jan Smuts who has been waiting in Cape Town for the British to lay on a a train to take him inland where he will join the Boer political and military leaders at Vereeniging for a conference starting on May 15th. They gathered in order to discuss the British terms of surrender. Smuts was mostly silent while he waited with his brother in law Krige and Deneys Reitz our narrator. They were placed aboard the warship HMS Monarch in Simonstown. Just to set the record straight, I said last week this was an Orion class battleship but of course it was just a normal warship as her namesake was only launched in 1910. My apologies, but a quick description about both is in order. The Monarch was placed as Guardship in Simonstown port in 1900. This was one of the older vessels in Britain's navy having been launched in 1868. It was also a symbolic vessel for Smuts, Reitz and Krige to find themselves. The design has been neither modern nor old. Built in the 1860s when sail was giving way to steam, wooden hulls were being replaced by iron, smoothbore artillery firing round-shot had been overtaken by rifled shell-firing cannon, heavy armour was being mounted on the sides. Mounted gun turrets were being mooted by the Navy top brass as well, but others more conservative opposed the upgrade. So she was a compromise and therefore pleased no-one. When it was built the Navy said steam engines were still not reliable enough so HMS Monarch was fitted with both engine, sails and even a forecastle. That prohibited the gun turrets from being able to fire forward – so in all intents and purposes she remained a man-o-war like the old wooden battleships of the 18th Century. After her renaming in 1902 as the HMS Simoon, the Royal Navy launched its new Orion Class dreadnoughts and the more modern HMS Monarch appeared in 1910. AS an aside, Monarch fought in the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and her shells damaged the German Dreadnought, SMS Koenig. Back in Simonstown Deneys Reitz, his general and the General's brother in law waited for their train. They were hurried through the suburbs of Cape Town in the dead of night so that no-one would catch sight of the famous General Smuts, then switched trains at the main line at Salt River. The next day they awoke in Matjesfontein in the Karoo. It's also time to rejoin Boer Spy Johanna van Warmelo one more time. She asked and was given permission to visit Irene concentration Camp outside Pretoria. If you remember she had worked there as a nurse months before, when women and children were dying at a rate of up to a dozen a day. At the end of April 1902 Johanna was finally allowed to visit Irene and dreaded what was awaiting her there.

Dr. Anton Krige rejoins us this week to answer my questions regarding best practise on how to train safely during this relatively early phase of the pandemic. We don’t know yet if this applies to humans & is contentious so therefore I would ensure adequate intake of those vitamins to prevent becoming ill but if diagnosed with COVID would discontinue any additional vitamin A & D supplementation just taking what’s in food. Former Proteas batsman Alviro Peterson was our guest as we discussed the Proteas' Test Series loss to India. The Springboks have reached the quarter-finals of the the rugby world cup where they will play hosts Japan and we spoke to former Boks captain Corne Krige.
Audiodacious — Half-time Chat with Siv Ngesi is made just for you by BrightRock. In each episode Siv talks to prominent rugby personalities about their rugby journeys and how they deal with change in their lives. Corne Krige was Springbok captain during one of the most tumultuous periods in South African rugby post-1994. Despite those challenges, the Zambian-born Krige ended his rugby career as a legend in green and gold. Having retired from rugby relatively early at the age 30, Krige has navigated the past 15 years of his life with the same tenacity in which he played the game. In his sit-down chat with Siv, Corne reflects on the rugby lessons he applies in life and business, not drawing his identity from temporary positions and what true change means for him. Quotes & talking points from Corne's interview with Siv Ngesi: + "Herschelle Gibbs was an absolute freak on the rugby field" + "At a time when I needed guidance sport really helped me" + "don't attach who you are to rugby, when rugby disappears what's going to happen?" + "Business isn't easy, but if you have a good partner it helps" + "Rugby should be a game played by people of all shapes and sizes" + "In leadership you must be big enough to say sorry ... and make up for your mistakes" + "If you don't humble yourself you'll be humbled by the game or by somebody else" + Life lessons from the All Blacks + "Team environment is always bigger than individual talent" + "I still get excited about World Cups" + "One's ability to change determines how mature you are" BrightRock

The performance of Dawid Krige’s Cederberg Capital China-focused fund has been astonishing, with a 75% return last year. That confirms the tightly focused portfolio’s ranking in the top one percent worldwide since it was launched seven years ago. I met Krige earlier this year and was immediately struck by the old adage of an apple not falling from the tree. I got to know Niel Krige, Dawid’s father, through our numerous media engagements when he was the managing director of Momentum, one of South Africa’s top three life assurers. Niel, who left the corporate world for a professorship, is a qualified actuary who aced all his degrees cum laude. The last time we saw each other was in Omaha for the Berkshire Hathaway AGM – the cathedral of value investing, a passion shared by his over-performing son. The younger Krige’s talent is now being recognised on a bigger stage. His keynote was second up at the annual London Value Investor conference last week, where he shared his two best ideas. I caught up with him over the tea break...
Ever since my first visit to the Berkshire Hathaway AGM back in 2006, I’ve been keeping an eye out for investment professionals who follow the Warren Buffett Playbook. There aren’t as many as you’d expect, considering the fantastic record that the Oracle of Omaha has built-up during more than half a century of market-beating returns. Many of those who claim to follow his approach make too many adjustments to be true Buffett disciples. But the intervention of a Biznews community member pointed me towards the real deal, the London-based Saffer Dawid Krige, the man behind Cederberg Capital whose performance ranks it in the top 1% of all money funds on earth. Krige’s fund, which focusses exclusively on investing in companies based in Greater China, last year produced an astonishing 75% return for his investors. Here's the story of the man who is applying the Buffett Way to astonishing effect in the world's great growth market, China.
Eldorado Park, in the south of Johannesburg, is on the brink of total destruction. It's a daily struggle to curb the social ills which have contributed to violent crimes in the area. Besides substance abuse, there's been a dramatic increase in shootings, attributed to gang turf wars. This week our reporter, Jamaine Krige, takes us through the trouble brewing in Eldorado Park…

In 1981 John Irvin brought many elder statesmen of Hollywood together to bring Peter Staub's novel Ghost Story to the big screen. VHS Rewind! Season 4 Episode 1 Ghost Story (1981) Some supernatural revenge should be visited upon the filmmakers for this travesty of a film. We at VHS Rewind feel that Peter Straub's novel, Ghost Story, upon which this film is (shall we say, loosely) based, is one of the great horror novels of all time. It has the scope and heft of one of those bricks produced by Stephen King (Salem's Lot; It; The Tommyknockers; etc.) but is much more literate and creepy and atmospheric. VHS Rewind is only too happy to dedicate our latest episode discussing why this film is a damn shame, a missed opportunity of epic proportions, from top to bottom. The raping of Straub's novel is just the first (albeit the most egregious) of the movie's sins. Then there is the unforgivable error of casting Craig Wasson: why did people cast this utterly talentless individual? This is the man who would go on to single handedly destroy Brian DePalma's BODY DOUBLE (1984). An actor with less charisma (and, apparently, a smaller dick) would be very hard to find. We are VHS Rewind were relieved to discover Craig Wasson seems to have stopped getting work after 2006. Is it us or does Craig Wasson look like a bastard cross between Bill Maher and Robert Englund (with none of the talent of even Mr. Englund)? And what of the famed Chowder Society? For an old-timer like myself, it is great to see this quartet of octogenarians (the great John Houseman; the great Fred Astaire; Douglas Fairbanks Jr (I guess he was great, but who was he?); and Melvyn Douglas (I guess he was great, but who was he?) but neither the director (John Irvin) nor the screenwriter (Lawrence D. Cohen) do these actors any favors. VHS Rewind is also only too happy to expound (and at length) upon the virtues of the film's one shining star: actress Alice Krige, who plays the sexy-as-all-get-out vengeful ghost. This is meant as a compliment but Ms. Krige's copious nudity is surpassed by her acting here: she does portray an especially menacing supernatural entity. We hope you will join VHS Rewind for this seance where we wish evil retribution upon the filmmakers responsible for 1981's GHOST STORY.
