may look good on paper, but that's creepy........
My guest today is the journalist and human rights activist, Natasha Walter. She is the author of two generation-defining books about feminism - The New Feminism, published in the late 90s and Living Dolls, published just over ten years later, a shocking polemic in which she questioned her own previous beliefs that equality was on the way to being a given and old fashioned sexism was just that, old-fashioned. Oh, how we laughed. Her new book, Before The Light Fades is very different and yet has a lot in common with those books. A memoir of grief and resistance it follows Natasha, now in her 50s, on a journey into her mother's past after losing her to suicide in her mid-70s. What she finds not only makes her question what she thought she knew about her mother but also what she wants for her future self.Natasha joined me to talk about getting to know your parents as people, rejecting her mother's feminism and why we MUST keep talking across the generations. We also discussed What feminine rebellion looks like, Doing civil disobedience in her 50s and Why she's so over organising other people. Oh and thanks to Natasha's mum I have a new mantra: You HAVE shoes! If you enjoyed this episode you might also like our conversations with bestselling novelist Kate Mosse and broadcaster, therapist and agony aunt, Philippa Perry. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including Before The Light Fades and Living Dolls by Natasha Walter, and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. Natasha Walter is Founder Director of Women for Refugee Women, an influential charity providing support for refugee women seeking asylum in the UK. Natasha is a feminist, a human rights activist and an experienced journalist, with a double first from Cambridge University. She is an author of books, including The New Feminism, Living Dolls and the play Motherland. Natasha became a Founder Director 13 years ago, ‘almost by mistake'. She didn't intend to set up a charity, but was driven to create social change by the powerful stories of the women refugees she met while working as a journalist. In this interview with Natasha you will hear about the steps she took to set up the charity, the learnings along the way, the vital support she has had from her Chair and colleagues, and the important mix of services, voice, media and campaigning that underpin Women for Refugee Women and Natasha's leadership. She shares insightful views about her frustrations with charity communications, and the importance of sharing the authentic voices and stories of refugees and asylum-seekers. Since our interview Natasha has stepped down as Director to become Creative Projects Director, handing over the Director role to Alphonsine Kabagabo.Follow 'Women for Refugee Women' and Natasha:Twitter: @4refugeewomen @natasha_walterInstagram: @4refugeewomen Facebook: @WomenforRefugeeWomenAnd if you can please donate to Women for Refugee Women here. Although they’re often part of our earliest happy memories, there’s something equally unsettling about dolls. Maybe it’s the trickery of their almost human appearance, those forever-staring eyes or frozen smiles. Or maybe it’s a long-buried fear that we might look over at any moment...and find them very much alive. Today, we’re sharing stories about haunted dolls.
There are few things I love more than an over the top movie soundtrack. This week I'm highlighting some insanely good Italian horror movie soundtracks that are all over 30 years old but could have been recorded last year, and are bonkers in the best way. Plus I queen out about "Dead to Me" (all that talking through tears!), some classic child beauty pageant documentaries and the late, great, In the Details alum Olivia de Havilland. On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we polish our tiaras and talk about child beauty pageants. They of course made national news with the tragic death of Jonbenet Ramsey in 1996. But after that, they stayed in the forefront of popular culture. HBO’s influential documentary called Living Dolls lead to the TV show Toddlers in Tiaras and the flaming turd filled train wreck that was Honey Boo Boo. Each year, over 250,000 children participate in America alone. From underage prostitutes to 8 year olds getting motel Botox, this one has it all. You would think that beauty pageants for children came from the sick minds of the current generation, but there is in fact a long history. P.T. Barnum organized a kid’s beauty pageant in 1855 called the National Baby Show, and it gained 143 contestants and an audience of over 60,000. This spread to other similar ideas, mostly judging naked babies like cattle. By the 1920s, however, the modern adult beauty pageants was born in New Jersey (of course it was…). From there, the idea of a Little Miss America was spawned, and it hasn’t stopped since. While Jonbenet’s death may have put these horror shows on the map, they had been there all along. There are different types of pageants; some are Natural, where rules are in place about amounts of makeup and outlandish outfits. Others are a Glitz, which are the ones you’re thinking about. Fake teeth, caked makeup, hair like a televangelist prostitute, horrible dances, all the worst of the worst. To get through a big pageant, it’s gonna cost a parent at least $5000, but some may spend as much as $70,000 by the time designer dresses, makeup, travel, and all the rest is calculate. But there are large purses to be won, so it keeps on keeping on. Some say the pageants are a good thing. They breed self confidence and sportsmanship. Others argue they sexualize children and create problems ranging from body dismorphia to eating disorders and big time trust issues when every friend is a competitor likely to throw you under the bus. So, how many pageants are there a year? What types of events do they perform in order to win? How are more recent online pageants judged? What happened to the mom who was self injecting Botox in her own 8 year old daughter in the lobby of a hotel? Listen, laugh, learn. From Hershey, Pennsylvania to Manhattan, from the United Kingdom to somewhere in Florida, there is a pocket of society that lives, laughs, loves little else but DOLLS. Barbies, Cabbage Patch kids, homemade converted robots, sex dolls, British Bratz dolls, you name it: if it’s an inanimate humanoid, these freaks LOVE it. This week, we went where presumably literally no one has gone before and watched a lil’ documentary called Living Dolls, which can only be compared to a slightly longer episode of My Strange Addiction (enjoyable!) We discuss the historical parallels between doll-people and bird owners, whether stop motion robot porn is cool or not, our understanding that beans are the predominant currency in the UK, plus so much more! And we can’t believe we have to say this, but just because you put eyelashes on your cum rag doesn’t mean you can bring it into a bed & breakfast! Tune in!
From family TV to teaching web series writing… Ross Brown wrote for some of the biggest family sitcoms of the eighties and nineties, including creating a show that would be the launching pad for Halle Berry‘s career.Few of us have more humble beginnings… Ross Brown literally started out on his hands and knees, as a stand-in for a dog in a dog commercial. Clearly there was nowhere to go but up! And up he went, as a 2nd assistant director and then 1st assistant director on such hits as films Private Benjamin and National Lampoon’s Vacation, as well as TV series Knots Landing. But Ross wanted to write… and write he did. A spec Webster episode led a staff gig on The Cosby Show, followed by The Facts of Life, Who’s The Boss, Step by Step, and many other popular sitcoms. He also created prime time series for ABC, CBS and the WB, such as Living Dolls, in which he helped cast young model Halle Berry in her first acting role.Ross then began teaching and expanding his writing horizons. From family TV to teaching web series writing… Ross Brown wrote for some of the biggest family sitcoms of the eighties and nineties, including creating a show that would be the launching pad for Halle Berry‘s career. Few of us have more humble beginnings… Ross Brown literally started out on his hands and knees, as a stand-in for a dog in a dog commercial. Clearly there was nowhere to go but up! And up he went, as a 2nd assistant director and then 1st assistant director on such hits as films Private Benjamin and National Lampoon's Vacation, as well as TV series Knots Landing. But Ross wanted to write… and write he did. A spec Webster episode led a staff gig on The Cosby Show, followed by The Facts of Life, Who's The Boss, Step by Step, and many other popular sitcoms. He also created prime time series for ABC, CBS and the WB, such as Living Dolls, in which he helped cast young model Halle Berry in her first acting role. Ross then began teaching and expanding his writing horizons. His play Hindsight received two staged readings at the Pasadena Playhouse (Pasadena, California) in July of 2007. His short play Field of Vision was performed in Chicago at the Appetite Theater's Bruschetta 2008 festival. Currently Ross is an Assistant Professor of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University in Orange, CA, where he developed a series of cutting-edge courses on creating TV series for the Internet. "A Game of Cat and Mouse" & "Beware of Living Dolls" Aired November 16, 1968 Catwoman pulls off an amazing crime as she not only steals a display of priceless jewels, but she steals the entire castle containing the jewels! Joker is impressed and wants in on the action, but Catowman refuses. A contest of wits ensues with Batman and Robin in the middle. How do they survive? Plus, it's the debut of Dollman on the cartoon. But this is not the Dollman of DC Comics, but a villain created by Filmation exclusively for the cartoon. The story holds up, but the villain doesn't. In addition, John and Dan Greenfield, creator and author of the 13th Dimension discuss the voice work of Jane Webb, the derivative nature of the Dollman villain, and their excitement at the upcoming Filmation created villains for the series. Comment on the episode here or write thebatcavepodcast@gmail.com. Dan Greenfield is the editor and co-creator of 13thDimension.com, a website devoted primarily to comics and pop culture, past and present. To him, the basic food groups are Batman, Planet of the Apes, Star Trek (the Original Series), James Bond, the Beatles and the Stones. But if he had to he'd be able to subsist on Batman alone. Channel 11 in New York was his favorite syndicated channel as a kid -- you can guess why -- followed closely by Channel 5. Channel 9 didn't really enter into it unless he was home sick and there wasn't much else on. He's married to his remarkably patient wife Wendy and his best sidekick is his son, Sam. They have two cats,Lex and Zod. Links 13th Dimension Website Facebook page Twitter

Natasha Walter, Humanitas Visiting Professor in Women's Rights 2014-15, will give two public lectures and participate in the Cambridge Women of the World event on Sunday 8 March 2015. The overall theme of all these events is From Sexism to Solidarity. Abstract In her first lecture, Natasha Walter will map current patterns of sexism in our society and the ways that apparently trivial sexism may be linked to inequality and abuse. But she will also look at how, in the five years since the publication of her book Living Dolls: the Return of Sexism, a new wave of feminism has arisen which relies on solidarity and action, and which is challenging the grip of sexism on our society.

This programme will be followed by a phone-in edition of Woman's Hour on feminism.
