Between 40 and 60, men lose 3 to 8% of their muscle mass per decade. After 60, that rate accelerates. Brain creatine levels decline with age. Bone density goes down. And the body's ability to synthesize creatine on its own decreases too. Meanwhile, creatine remains one of the most researched, most affordable, and safest supplements in existence and most men over 40 either aren't taking it or are taking it wrong. Dr. G breaks down exactly what the research says, what dose actually works for your brain versus your muscles, and what to look for before you buy. In this episode, you'll learn: • Why 5 grams a day saturates your muscles but does almost nothing for your brain, and what the emerging research says about the dose you actually need for cognitive protection, focus, and sleep deprivation recovery • How creatine supports bone mineral density, mitochondrial stability, and antioxidant defense at the cellular level, not just muscle size • Exactly what form to buy, what certifications to look for, and what to avoid when creatine shopping in 2026 This one is for every man over 40. And for every woman who has one in her life. The Complete Guide to Training, Recovery, Muscle & Longevity After 40How often should men over 40 lift weights? Most men over 40 should lift weights 3 to 4 times per week. What are the best vitamins for men over 40?The best vitamins for men over 40 include Vitamin D3 with K2, magnesium glycinate, zinc, B-complex vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C and E, and probiotics. These nutrients support testosterone production, energy levels, sleep quality, recovery, and overall health, especially as nutrient deficiencies become more common with age.

Send a message/question here!https://ovr40.co/chat to book a free chat with me and Get Unstuck with workouts, diet and lifestyle habits. For years I struggled to understand how to structure my workouts in my 40s - training too much and feeling exhausted, or not doing enough and making zero progress. Then I figured out this 3-dial framework that changed everything. Now at 49, I'm in better shape than I was at 31, training just 3 times a week for 40-45 minutes. In this episode, I break down the three workout variables every man over 40 needs to balance when working out: Intensity, Frequency, and Volume. Get these wrong and you'll either burn out or see no results. Get them right and you'll finally make consistent progress without living in the gym.The 3 Workout Dials:Intensity - How hard you push yourself during each workoutFrequency - How often you train per weekVolume - How many exercises and sets you doThe Secret: Turn TWO dials up high, keep one low. Not one (not enough stimulus), not three (can't recover after 40).My Recommendation for Men Over 40:✅ High Intensity - Push hard on every set✅ High Frequency - Train 3-4 times per week❌ Low Volume - Keep workouts to 4-5 exercises, 3 sets eachThis approach works because it gives your body enough stimulus to build muscle and strength without overwhelming your recovery. After 40, testosterone drops, cortisol runs higher, and recovery becomes harder. You can't train like you did in your 20s.After 16 years of coaching men over 40, this is the framework that gets the best results for sustainable fitness, muscle building, fat loss, and overall health without burnout or injury.MORE RESOURCES FOR MEN OVER 40:
What if midlife wasn't the beginning of decline, but a second chance to feel alive again? In this episode, my guest is Louis Bezich, men's health advocate, and author of Saving Men from Themselves. After years of juggling leadership, divorce, and single parenthood, Louis discovered that taking care of himself wasn't selfish - it was survival.Louis shares how purpose, relationships, and everyday rituals can transform men's health, longevity, and happiness. He speaks honestly about the lies we tell ourselves (“I'm fine”), the habits that hold us back, and the simple mindset shift that can reignite motivation, no matter how stuck or tired you feel. You'll hear about:How to turn life's setbacks, such as divorce, stress, and even loneliness, into fuel for growth. Why men's health isn't just about diet or exercise, but meaning and connection. The “provider and protector” myth that keeps so many of us from looking after ourselves. How brotherhood and belonging can literally help you live longer. Why it's never too late to start living healthy and feeling good again. This isn't a pep talk; it's a practical, heartfelt reminder that you still have time to become the man you want to be.Why You Should ListenBecause most of us know we should look after ourselves, we just don't know where to start, or how to stay motivated when life feels like one long list of responsibilities. Louis strips away the noise and shows that better health and connection aren't about perfection; they're about purpose, small routines, and remembering that others depend on us too.If you want to find out more about Louis and his work visit his website: https://louisbezich.com/. Key Learnings Purpose Requires Realism, Not Just Passion - Everyone wants to be the drummer in Disturbed, but that guy's good at drumming. My whole methodology is about realism. You have to know what your values are, what your interests are, but you better be good at it or forget it. Otherwise, it's a hobby. Values Are Choices, Not Virtues - Most people confuse values and virtues. Virtues are things like integrity, courage, and thankfulness... Behaviors we all should have more of. Values are choices about how you want to live, work, and relate. It's a value if it would drive who you married, what job you took, and where you went on vacation. There are 16 Measurable Values - Values exist on a continuum like a DNA profile. Scope reflects how exciting a life you want. Radius is how much you want to change the world systemically. Belovedness is how important an intimate relationship is to you. Work centrism is whether you love work for work's sake or if it's just a means to an end. Men Over 32 Value Romantic Relationships Most - We just got data showing that for men over the age of 32, belovedness is their number one value. It's much lower for women. Only 50% of people have family centrism in their top five values—we assume everyone shares our values, but they don't. Your Authenticity Gap Reveals Your Pain - You could hold the value of scope as number one, but not be able to live it right now because of your job or family situation. That gap between what you value and what you're living—we call that your authenticity gap. If you've got a big one, you know it because it hurts. Gen Z's Top Value Is Self-Care - 75% of Gen Z have self-care, wellbeing, pleasure, and leisure as their top value. Their top three are self-care, authentic self-expression, and helping others. Meanwhile, hiring managers want achievement, scope, and work centrism. The overlap is 2%. Aptitudes Are Your Brain's Dominant Hand - We have nine cognitive aptitudes preset by age 15. Are you a generalist or a specialist? A future focuser or a present focuser? A brainstormer or someone who comes up with one fully baked idea per year? It's painful to be a generalist in a specialist job. Your Personality Is How The World Experiences You - Your personality is not the list of adjectives you write about yourself. It's how the world experiences you. When I did my 360 feedback, people said I was the hurricane, not the calm at the center. I had to learn to communicate better the thoughts I had, and learn to be less chaotic. Everyone Writes Themselves As The Hero - A police lieutenant once told me: everyone writes the story of their life with themselves at the center as the hero. No matter what story we tell ourselves, we always cast ourselves as the hero. That's why self-awareness is so hard and why we need testing, not just self-reflection. The Aperture Problem: Kids Only Know Five Jobs - When kids come out of high school, they only know about five jobs, two of which are their parents. By college it goes up to seven. By grad school, MBAs are thinking about two or three options—banking, consulting, or tech. There are 135 industries and thousands of types of work nobody tells them about. Great Leaders Don't Do It For The Money - I've been blessed to know many of the greatest leaders. They're doing it for love of people, excitement, work, or impact. I've never met a great leader who was doing it for the money. Jensen Huang and Jeff Bezos are examples—clarity, vision, excellence in everything, no shortcuts. Better To Be The Author Than The Editor - When you're ambitious, you end up surrounded by voices and can become the editor of your life. You have to become the author. Paint a self-portrait of yourself standing still so that when you start running, you know where you're going and why. Reflection Questions What would the 5 people closest to you say about how you show up? Would their description match how you see yourself, or do you have a self-awareness gap you haven't addressed? If you mapped your actual daily behaviors against your stated top values, would they align? Or are you living someone else's version of success while calling it your own? Are you the author of your life or the editor? Whose voices are loudest in your head when making big decisions, and have you given yourself permission to write your own story? Are you stuck in the fat-burning zone but still not seeing results? Many people think burning fat during exercise equals fat loss, but the truth is more complex. In today's episode, we'll discuss the difference between fat burning and fat loss—and why understanding this can transform your fitness journey. We'll debunk the common myth that staying in a low-intensity "fat-burning zone" is the best way to lose fat. You'll understand why your body burning fat doesn't necessarily translate into fat loss. We'll also discuss how your body uses calories for energy, how to track your caloric intake and burn, and the importance of quality nutrition in maintaining a calorie deficit. I also highlight the dangers of restrictive diets and share efficient ways to burn calories throughout the day. I address the widespread myth of targeting belly fat and offer a comprehensive fat-loss approach, combined with regular monitoring of body composition and overall progress, which is far more effective than belly fat exercises. So, whether you're struggling with stubborn belly fat or looking to kickstart your fat-loss journey, this episode is packed with actionable insights that will help you create a sustainable daily routine for lasting fat loss. In 2021, over 38 million Americans (11.6% of the population) had diabetes, mostly type 2, while 97.6 million adults had prediabetes, a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Although millions of new cases are diagnosed yearly, particularly in those over 45, the condition is often reversible with lifestyle changes. In today's episode, we'll talk about the severe health risks associated with untreated diabetes and the need not only to understand and manage diabetes but also to take proactive steps to reverse it by adopting healthier habits. I'll share my journey of helping my father control the condition, which has led to significant improvements in blood sugar levels.Additionally, we'll discuss three common dietary mistakes many people with diabetes make and the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, proper nutrition, stress management, and sufficient sleep, in controlling blood sugar levels. If you or someone you know is dealing with type 2 diabetes, listen to the episode and check out our diabetes program to learn how you can potentially reverse diabetes rather than just manage it.Timestamps:00:00 Introduction to the podcast and coaching call06:31 How I helped my father take control of his diabetes17:15 What is type 2 diabetes?22:53 How diabetes develops: the role of blood glucose27:31 The complexity of glucose regulation30:18 Why we should eat carbs after a workout33:40 How a healthy lifestyle helps in blood sugar regulation37:27 Symptoms and risks of type 2 diabetes44:24 Common mistakes in diabetes management50:20 Animal protein helps regulate blood sugar1:00:39 The risks of eating "naked carbs"1:05:16 Managing diabetes through diet1:12:41 Healthy carbs and fats for diabetics1:15:58 Portion control and meal planning1:18:12 Supplements and lifestyle changesResources Mentioned in the Episode:Over 40 Alpha Podcast Episode 142: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/episode-142-reversing-insulin-resistance-for-optimal/id1446632685?i=1000659092041Over 40 Diabetes Solution:https://over40shred.com/diabetes Subscribe and Listen on iTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-over-40-alpha-podcast/id1446632685 Listen to This Episode on Your Favourite Podcast Channel:www.over40alphapodcast.comYour support of the Over 40 Alpha Podcast helps to spread the word and ultimately change the lives of men worldwide over 40, 50, and 60 who struggle with health and fitness.I want to give a MASSIVE thanks to everyone stepping up and leaving 5-star reviews. Please Review and Share the Podcast Here: Drop that 5-star review.https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-over-40-alpha-podcast/id1446632685Connect with Funk Roberts: Website - https://www.over40alpha.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/funkrobertsfitnessFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/funkrobertsfitnessFunk's book ‘Nutrition for Men Over 40' - www.over40meals.com
Funk Roberts made a bold move by quitting his job without telling his wife to fully dive into his online fitness business. Initially, he found success, but things changed when constant program launches became exhausting and unpredictable. He shifted to a membership model, leading to significant revenue increases but also financial hiccups due to billing issues. Roberts rebranded his focus toward men over 40 struggling with low testosterone, leveraging his personal experience to build a strong community and business. Funk's Bold Career Move Funk Roberts took a huge risk by quitting his job without informing his wife to pursue his online fitness business. He believed that without fully committing, he couldn't grow the business to its full potential. While this choice might seem reckless, it reflected his deep passion and conviction. Initial Success and Challenges Roberts initially found success by launching various workout programs. However, the continuous cycle of launches became taxing and financially unstable. Despite early victories, this method proved unsustainable in the long term. Switching to a Membership Model Advised to switch from individual launches to a membership site, Roberts seized the opportunity. This switch significantly boosted his revenue. However, forced continuity billing led to chargebacks and disputes, causing financial strain and emotional stress. The lesson here? Stability often trumps short-term gains. Low Testosterone and Personal Struggles Triggered by a health checkup revealing low testosterone levels, Roberts faced physical and mental challenges. He avoided testosterone replacement therapy, opting instead for natural wellness methods. His experiences of self-destructive behavior and personal hardships made him more relatable to his audience. Focusing on Men Over 40 Roberts decided to focus on men over 40, a niche often neglected in fitness. He created the "Over 40 Shred" membership site to help these men tackle issues like decreasing testosterone and the "dad bod" syndrome. His goal was to provide structured, accessible resources to help them regain their health and confidence. Building a Community Roberts emphasized the importance of community and mutual support within his fitness programs. Additionally, annual deaths from prostate cancer are projected to increase by 85%—from 375,000 in 2020 to nearly 700,000 by 2040.These statistics are part of the reason why I did a coaching call in the Over 40 Alpha Brotherhood specifically addressing prostate cancer.
