Needing more reminders to relax your shoulders and breathe? Long for the days when your parents sent you to your room or the corner for a much-needed time-out. Life can be intense and our day-to-day schedules don't seem to allow the room to relax and “laugh it off”. But laughter is like a magic potion for stress—just a good giggle can melt away tension and make you feel lighter. It's your body's way of giving you a happy boost, flooding you with feel-good vibes and boosting your immune system like a champ. Whether you find something naturally funny or you're intentionally inducing a cackle or two, much is to be learned about the power of incorporating humor and laughter into your daily life and how this can lead to significant improvements in your physical, emotional, and social well-being, making it an essential tool for coping with stress and enhancing your quality of life. Plus, sharing a laugh brings people closer, turning ordinary moments into joyous memories. So go ahead, laugh a little louder and a little more often—your mind and body will thank you! In the post-pandemic era, the debate over whether or not to return to the office seems far from settled — and yet, the push to bring employees back to the office is growing more aggressive. Amazon issued a warning to staff not long ago. Google is factoring employees' in-office attendance into their performance reviews. And ironically, working from home has been officially replaced by a return to the office by Zoom. So is returning to the old structured schedule really the best way to optimize our work environment? Or should we pursue other avenues to do our best work? According to Gustavo Razzetti, a renowned expert on workplace culture, a hybrid of remote and in-person work is what's here to stay. Remote, Not Distant (2022), his latest book, has therefore been written as a manual - aiming to provide a blueprint for cultivating workplace cultures that transcend traditional office boundaries and navigate new norms where employees have more flexibility, but remain united by the same overarching mission. In this episode, Gustavo walks us through the steps and mindset shifts that have proven critical to leading and thriving in a hybrid workplace. He also explains the dangers behind the bubble of psychological safety, the myth of work-life balance, and the future of work. Most importantly, this episode leaves us with an important roadmap for the future of work, where work is meaningful, flexible, and human-centric. Sean: Got it. That's very good. Very good stuff. And Gustavo, what allowed you to get to where you are? All these answers, all these examples, and stories that you have? Were you always a disciple of remote work? How long have you been working remotely to realize these things? Gustavo: No, as I mentioned earlier, wasn't always. And that's something that I stress in my book because there are people that are in the camp of I always supported remote people that are hated. I'm more into the camp of always exploring what's better and also trying to understand because I work with different companies and show them things are changing. So it's not once again, my approach is not remote or the office. It's how you can combine the best of both worlds. And for every company, every industry, every job, it's different. And so my take is this is a revolution that's happening. People showed that they have flexibility not only in the location where they work but actually in scale. When people can change their schedule or adapt it to their family style, their needs, some people like me, I'm better working. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Join our community and ask questions here: from.sean.si/discord Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/ - - - Gustavo Razzetti Website: https://gustavorazzetti.com/ Website: https://www.fearlessculture.design/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gustavorazzetti Twitter: https://twitter.com/gusrazzetti
Sean: So one of the questions you mentioned is culture as well. Is there a necessary culture? Because you said that there are companies who have people in the office. Culture is not that great. They're distant from each other, even though. They are just a few feet away. Is there a necessary culture that has to be established first, or is there a kind of culture that would make for a very good working-from-home or remote team for this to be able to work well? Gustavo: That's a fantastic question, Sean. I think the most important thing about culture is, first, defining what type of culture you want for your company. There are different types of cultures. You mentioned Elon Musk. He likes what we call aggressive culture and aggressiveness that it's all about, hey, if you have to sleep in the office, work 24 hours, do it. It's all about results. Doesn't matter about the people. The other extreme of those cultures are companies that are maybe all about people, very people-centric, very tribal, and sometimes overly protective. Now they're all worldly people first. Lots of perks. Make sure that people and then there are many in-between cultures, like what we call the fearless culture is a culture which it's very aggressive, very innovative. It's looking for lofty goals. But on the other hand, it also takes care of people. So it's not on people not signing on, only business results, finding the right balance. The most important thing is about defining. But second, is how you intentionally create culture. There are things that, for example, if you are a leader, how you model, know your behavior, not just what you say, but what you do shapes the culture. Regardless if you're working in an office remotely or a combination of both, you need to spend, for example, between 10 and 15% of the time that you, for example, you're in a meeting or on a call. Spend that time on building interpersonal relationships, for example, the people that work fully, remotely, when they get together once every quarter or twice a year, that time it's mostly spent building relationships. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Join our community and ask questions here: from.sean.si/discord Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/ - - - Gustavo Razzetti Website: https://gustavorazzetti.com/ Website: https://www.fearlessculture.design/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gustavorazzetti Twitter: https://twitter.com/gusrazzetti

Sean: Amazing. Thank you so much, Gustavo. And if there's any advice that you could give struggling business owners struggling to maybe ask their people to get back to a face-to-face office setup, what is your advice to them? Gustavo: My advice is don't make strategic decisions without involving your people. I mean, Apple, and Google, tried to impose something and it became a mess and then they had to adjust. So save that time and save the PR nightmare and involve your people. And once again, involving the people doesn't mean that that's going to be a democracy and people are going to vote. It's about getting insights. People see things that leaders fail to see because they are in different positions. And also that's why you're paying them a lot of money because they're smart people. So use them as a portion of food for thought and don't make those decisions lightly. And most importantly, whatever decision you make, experiment, run a couple of experiments, see what works, and adopt, but also be open to adjusting your behavior from time to time. - - - Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/leadershipstack Join our community and ask questions here: from.sean.si/discord Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/leadershipstack Leadership Stack Merch: https://leadershipstack.com/shop/ - - - Gustavo Razzetti Website: https://gustavorazzetti.com/ Website: https://www.fearlessculture.design/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gustavorazzetti Twitter: https://twitter.com/gusrazzetti

Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward. The start of the year is the time when many organizations are rolling out the priorities for their teams. In this week's episode we make the case for thinking about prioritization in a broader sense beyond the top corporate goals. Many leaders don't feel their teams are being productive (see Microsoft report below) and while this is contrary to the views of individuals, it does present an opportunity to focus on measuring outcomes.Taking the time to think about how you can simplify often complex tasks at work and streamline meetings can help people to prioritize their time and ultimately be more productive. As next week's guest Gustavo Razzetti says “… busyness is a wicked problem.”A few extra resources:Microsoft Work Trend Index - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/worklab/work-trend-index/hybrid-work-is-just-workHow to say no in No-vember for a happier, healthier, more productive work life – from Naomi - http://collaborativity.ca/how-to-say-no-in-no-vember-for-a-happier-healthier-more-productive-work-life/Quick reminderDon't forget to sign up for our weekly newsletter foHRsight at www.futurefoHRward.com/foHRsight.Follow us on LinkedIn:Mark - www.linkedin.com/in/markedgarhr/Naomi - www.linkedin.com/in/naomititlemancolla/future foHRward - www.linkedin.com/company/future-fohrward/And on Instagram - www.instagram.com/futurefohrward/foHRsight+ is a private digitally-powered community for forward thinking senior HR leaders committed to making work better. Welcome to foHRsight – a podcast about making work better brought to you by future foHRward.Following a query from one of our listeners (thank you!), in this our second episode, we share more thoughts about how the office can be used as part of your hybrid strategy. Before we get in to that we start with a check-in and share what we have learnt in 2022. For Naomi it's the importance of connection and for Mark the value of human-centred leadership – more to follow in future episodes! What is the value of the office? You'll hear Naomi talking about the importance of leaders articulating “they why”. A mandatory return to the office “just because” isn't enough. Naomi goes on to outline some ideas of the activity you can encourage people to do at the office.Deep collaboration – as outlined in Gustavo Razzetti's book Remote not DistantOn-the-job learningExchanging human energy and relationship buildingHere are some links to some relevant articles:The study about the importance of proximity to feedback by Emanuel, Harrington & Pallais A link to Gustavo Razzetti's book Remote not Distant Returning to the Office? How would your team members describe the culture of your team? And would you even know how to begin designing a team culture? In my first few years as a manager, I definitely had no clue how to do this. And in honest reflection, I think I even abdicated the "culture work" to the company, i.e. the executives and HR. But that was a mistake. As leaders of a team, no matter how big or small, we have influence over the culture and hence, a responsibility to shape and cultivate it in a positive way! In this week's episode of The Manager Track podcast, I am joined by Gustavo Razzetti. Having been a culture design consultant for the past 20 years, I invited him to share his tactical insights, tips, and frameworks that you can implement right away. Gustavo Razzetti is the CEO and Founder of Fearless Culture. Gustavo has helped leaders from Fortune 500 startups, nonprofits, and everything in between on every continent except Antarctica. When you look at culture in the sense of communities ( nations, groups), It is a vital determining factor of how that community reacts, responds, and grows. Culture plays a significant role in the lives of everyone in a community. It gives people a sense of belonging, especially when everyone speaks the same language and not necessarily in a literal way. Corporate culture is not much different. It provides people with a sense of belonging and commitment, and when a company has a positive culture and people are working towards a common goal, the company will grow. But many companies now need help to rediscover or redefine their culture. As we moved from an office environment to a virtual one and then to a hybrid one, many companies' cultures were shifted or even lost. In this episode, we speak to an expert on corporate culture in this hybrid environment.

His most recent book is Remote Not Distant: Design a Company Culture That Will Help You Thrive in a Hybrid Workplace*. In this conversation, Gustavo and I explore the critical nature of trust for building belonging on hybrid and remote teams. We examine the principles of psychological safety and how this matters just as much in digital collaboration. Perhaps most importantly, we look at several tactics to open up trust that will help us pave the ways towards team belonging. Key Points Hybrid work environments have the potential to be the best of both words, but in some places it is now worse. Trust is between individuals. Psychological safety is about how safe we feel with a team. It's helpful to think of building psychological safety like climbing a ladder. Ironically, the higher you go on the ladder, the safer you feel taking risks. Welcoming questions such as “What's your superpower?” and “What's your kryptonite?” can be useful starting points for building trust. Metaphors are often a powerful way to entire into more complex, emotional discussion without feeling unsafe. A SEAT at THE TABLE: Leadership, Innovation & Vision for a New Era
As leaders try to navigate their businesses through a more complicated market environment, their Human Resources can be their most valuable resources - if they can keep them focused and engaged in the tasks at hand. This has led to increasing conversations about the importance of corporate culture. Many leaders think that this means creating a lofty vision expressed in flowery language. However culture only works when it is practical and actionable. But how do we do that in the face of distracted team members and hybrid work?Today I'm speaking with Gustavo Razzetti, CEO and founder of Fearless Culture, a culture design consultancy that has helped leaders from Fortune 500s, startups, nonprofits, and everything in between on every continent but Antartica. He created the Culture Design Canvas, a framework used by thousands of teams and organizations across the world to map, assess, and design their culture.Guvstavo is the author of four books, the most recent being “Remote, Not Distant: Design a Company Culture That Can Help You Thrive in a Hybrid Workplace”In this episode of A Seat at The Table, Gustavo talks about:1. Can workplace culture be designed - and how we can do this.2. How to make our company culture easier for employees to understand - and more actionable for leaders.3. How leadership can overcome the challenges of a hybrid work model.4. What he's learned working with a wide range of companies - from the best to the worst.USEFUL LINKSGustavo's LinkedIn profile. : https://www.linkedin.com/in/gustavorazzetti/Fearless Culture company website: https://www.fearlessculture.design/Free download of Culture Design Canvas: https://fearless_culture.ck.page/b82be2c3e3Get your copy of “Remote, Not Distant”: https://www.amazon.com/Remote-Not-Distant-Company-Workplace-ebook/dp/B09VXX4FN3Learn about The Current Situation in Sourcing: https://thecurrentsituation.netA Seat at The Table website: https://seat.fm
Gustavo Razzetti's favorite question is “what if?” That simple question has helped him on his quest for continuous exploration and experimentation. As the fifth child of seven siblings in his family, he learned early to look for new ideas and solutions and to challenge the status quo. Growing up in Argentina during the civil war added to the context in which he valued freedom and independence. What began as responsibilities he took on as a child, such as cooking meals for his siblings when his parents were traveling, has translated into a lifetime of continual experimentation, learning, and discovery. Change has always been a constant to Gustavo. His diverse background is at the intersection of change leadership, marketing strategy, innovation, and design thinking. He has led and transformed six organizations in different scenarios over 20 years: start-up, high-growth, and turnaround, and has worked in diverse places: New York, Argentina, Chicago, Puerto Rico, and Los Angeles. He loves advising CEOs from both Fortune 500 and startups alike. The author of hundreds of articles on change leadership, innovation, and self-improvement, Gustavo released his most recent book in June 2022: Remote Not Distant: Design a Company Culture That Will Help You Thrive in a Hybrid Workplace. He addresses multiple areas of company cultures, from keeping teams connected and improving remote collaboration to managing asynchronous communication, facilitating courageous conversations, and defining the right hybrid model for your organization. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Gustavo's journey: He was invited to participate in the cutting-edge Innovation Leadership Program at Stanford University. Gustavo is the author of three books prior to his current publication: Stretch for Change: How To Improve Your Change Fitness And Thrive In Life, Stretch Your Mind: How to conquer your comfort zone one stretch at a time, and Stretch Your Team: How to Adapt And Thrive in a Changing World. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the need for company leaders and their employees to accept the reality that hybrid work is not only possible but desirable for many reasons. While no one is certain what the “new normal” ultimately looks like, hybrid work is clearly here to stay. But the big question is how will companies be able to design a powerful hybrid workplace culture, regardless of where people are working. Many traditional companies are still struggling with the idea of hybrid or remote work. Gustavo Razzetti is the CEO and founder of Fearless Culture, a culture design consultancy that helps teams do the best work of their lives. For more than 20 years, Razzetti has helped leaders from Fortune 500s, startups, nonprofits, and everything in between on every continent but Antartica. Gustavo is also the creator of the Culture Design Canvas, a framework used by thousands of teams and organizations across the world to map, assess and design their culture. In addition to his consulting work with clients, Gustavo regularly speaks with leaders and teams about culture change, teamwork, and hybrid workplaces. His coaching and tools have helped countless executives and teams develop work environments where people collaborate to accelerate individual and collective performance. Gustavo is a prolific writer and author of four books on culture change. His newest book is Remote, Not Distant: Design a Company Culture That Will Help You Thrive in a Hybrid Workplace. His insights also have been featured in The New York Times, Psychology Today, Forbes, Fortune, and other media outlets.
The COVID-19 pandemic launched a great experiment in the way we work, at least for office workers. Remote work became routine early in the pandemic. Two and a half years later many people are still working part-time from home. And, with low unemployment and workers who demand flexibility, it looks increasingly likely that some combination of remote and on-site work is here to stay. MPR News guest host Chris Farrell talks about what this dramatic change in how we work and interact with colleagues in the office means for workplace culture, employee collaboration and even office design. Guests: Alexandra Samuel works from her home in Vancouver, Canada as a tech writer and journalist whose work appears in the Wall Street Journal and Harvard Business Review. She is co-author of “Remote, Inc.: How To Thrive at Work….Wherever You Are” published in 2021. Gustavo Razzetti is founder and CEO of Fearless Culture, a business management consulting company based in Chicago. He's also the author of “Remote Not Distant: Design a Company Culture to Thrive in a Hybrid Workplace” published in June. Hi everyone! Today we're going to speak about a trend that's taken off like a rocket since COVID-19 hit the world in early 2020… hybrid work. It offers some workers the potential to work at home, go to the office, and perform their job duties on a flexible schedule. As we'll see, it isn't necessarily that way for everyone. In my conversation with our featured guest expert, you're going to learn such things as how he defines hybrid work, what companies are doing a good job in managing this new way or working, and what the future might look like for this trend. More importantly, you'll learn about the many opportunities our guest believes the hybrid work model may offer you… and believe me, he names lots of them! Finally, in true Looking Forward: Opportunities fashion, you'll also get some tips on how to take the first steps toward capitalizing on one or more of these opportunities. To educate us on all this, we've brought on an outstanding guest expert. He's Gustavo Razzetti. On today's show, we discuss what it means to have a fearless culture in your organization.Gustavo Razzetti is CEO and founder of Fearless Culture, a culture design consultancy that helps teams do the best work of their lives. For more than 20 years, Razzetti has helped leaders from Fortune 500s, startups, nonprofits, and everything in between on every continent but Antartica. Gustavo is also the creator of the Culture Design Canvas, a framework used by thousands of teams and organizations across the world to map, assess, and design their culture. A prolific writer and author of four books on culture change, Gustavo's insights have been featured in The New York Times, Psychology Today, Forbes, BBC, and Fortune, among others. Gustavo loves to share his knowledge and advice to help make successful leaders and a great work culture.Key Takeaways:What does it mean to have a fearless culture?A fearless culture is not the absence of fear. Fear should be a signal, rather than a barrier. We want a culture where we are courageous despite fear.Cultures are difficult to influence and change. How do we go about designing this culture?Design doesn't mean control. Human nature is to resist control. What we can do is define certain parameters or guidelines that people can operate freely within. How can you turn around a toxic culture?First, define what pieces are truly toxic. Toxicity should be addressed at the senior level. What behaviors are we modeling or tolerating? Consistently identify the behaviors we reward vs the behaviors we punish. The rewarded behaviors should mirror the stated company values. What are some of the biggest challenges companies face in implementing their design? Most leaders are not taught to build culture, so they are unprepared. There is often a gap between what leaders see and think about their culture and the reality that employees experience. It's a process that takes a lot of effort and time. How does influencing your culture change when talking about remote organizations?Remote not Distant is a book I just wrote about the remote workforce. Remote workers value freedom and flexibility. Collaboration time needs to be scheduled and prioritized with remote workers. In this scenario, the office will be an off-site for collaboration and building culture, not the place where most of the work gets done. Where do we work? It is one of the biggest questions facing leaders today. It doesn't look like employees are flocking back to offices, and remote and hybrid work sure seem like they're here to stay. Does that mean we can't have the culture we want? In his book “Remote, Not Distant” Gustavo Razzetti argues leaders can design a culture for remote work. And by the way, that includes a Lean culture - so tune in. Gustavo Razzetti Gustavo Razzetti is the CEO and founder of Fearless Culture, a culture design consultancy that helps teams do the best work of their lives. KEY TOPICS IN THIS PODCAST: Gustavos's career background Company culture defined What is a culture retrospective? The importance of leaders demonstrating vulnerability How a "stinky fish" tool helps team to boost trust and collaboration Hybrid and remote company culture explained The importance of trust in a remote company How the book “Remote, Not Distant” helps companies to build a strong and positive culture KEY TAKEAWAYS People need to feel that their leaders are reliable and dependable, and that starts with ensuring that words and actions are always in alignment When expectations are clear and communication is open, employees are more likely to be aligned with the company's goals and values. Communication is vital to maintaining a healthy culture. Being a leader doesn't mean that you have to be perfect. In fact, admitting that you're not perfect can actually help to build trust and credibility with your team. The most important thing in a company culture is not your location, but your ability to be flexible. A strong company culture doesn't just happen, it has to be built intentionally. Creating a culture of respect, trust, and teamwork is essential for any organization that wants to function at its best. SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are picking up, organizing, and instilling the filter; if it doesn't serve us, it has to go! Since we are the owners of our domains, mind, body, and soul then the only what to control chaos is to declutter our world. Where to start? How about at the source of our frustration, worry, or stress. Pushing it around on the plate or moving it from here to there is not going to solve our issues or open up a clear path forward. We have to make some cuts, some deep cuts, to get back on track and make room for some new ideas. Clutter is the physical manifestation of unmade decisions fueled by procrastination, a quote by Christina Scalise. Whoa, the buck stops here. No more excuses. You have things, thoughts, past regrets, and unaccomplished goals which no longer fit. Time for some thoughtful evaluation; keep, pitch, or donate. As a life coach, I'm often tasked with untangling a person's challenges to help them see a path forward. I think we've all been there a time or two. Overwhelmed, where every pressure in our lives takes on the same level of priority and before we know it, we're running around with our heads cut off thinking the sky is falling. It's easy to do. Life is busy, complicated, and oftentimes, messy. I don't know about you but I don't have a life assistant who wakes me up with my to-do list and a steaming cup of coffee. Picks out my outfit for the day, tells me they have this and that handled, and for me to just concentrate on what I do best. WOW - maybe that's the type of robot help we need to be creating. Instead, you have to wake up and tackle it all while running the gauntlet of more challenges and to-do's added as you go. Chaos! There is a time in the day when no matter what else needs to be done, I take a hard pass. If there is any way it can wait until tomorrow - it does! Today, I know my limitations but there was a time when busy felt productive and productive felt successful and stress was just part of it. If you're there - don't be swindled by that thought. If you look at all the memes, apparel, and home decor telling you to nurture yourself, love yourself, keep calm, and hit the beach, and think those are written for someone else, they aren't. You will hit a wall. I don't know what you're wall will look like but hopefully, it's just a nice wake-up call that you need more balance in your life. Well-rounded doesn't just refer to possessing a personality mixture of a little bit of everything but you can strive for a well-rounded life. Gustavo Razzetti shares How to Lead a Well Balanced Life in an article for fearlessculture.com Barrie Davenport and Steve SJ Scott wrote a book; DECLUTTER YOUR MIND - How to Stop Worrying, Relieve Anxiety, and Eliminate Negative Thinking Hereford helps you Simplify Your Life in 10 Practical Steps found at essentiallifeskills.net Hereford offers 15 Ways to Enjoy Life More found at essentiallifeskills.net CHALLENGE: Purge the clutter that's distracting you from living a well-balanced life.
