An in-depth examination of how the United States can build more effective partner militaries. Military assistance has a bad reputation. Large-scale attempts to build partner militaries in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Vietnam cost the United States billions of dollars and ended ignominiously, with the collapse of local forces as American troops withdrew. Arms transfers of sophisticated, American-made weapons often appear to do more harm than good. Yet military assistance and support—operating indirectly through partners—when done right, can deliver remarkable strategic results for the United States and its partners. Working effectively with partner militaries is one of the most pressing national security challenges for the United States today. In their latest book, War at Arm's Length: How America Can Build Effective Partners Through Military Assistance (Yale University Press, 2026), Richard Bennet and Alexander Noyes offer a systematic look at military assistance in the twenty-first century, examining a frequently deployed but often misunderstood set of tools that allows the United States to leverage partner militaries to achieve national security objectives. Bennet and Noyes posit that two main factors—the degree of interest alignment on security issues and the level of institutional capacity of the receiving force—will be the most important variables in Washington's ability to build militarily effective partners. Our guests today are Doctor Richard Bennet, who is a senior research associate at the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland, and Doctor Alexander Noyes, who is a fellow in the Talbott Center for Security, Strategy, and Technology at the Brookings Institution. Our host is Eleonora Mattiacci, an Associate Professor of Political Science at Amherst College. She is the author of Volatile States in International Politics (Oxford University Press, 2023). In today's episode, I sit down with Jon Noyes of Stand to Reason, a former atheist who once believed faith in God was intellectually indefensible. But after examining the evidence for Christianity, everything changed. Drawing from his background in law, Jon shares how to approach doubt with both clarity and compassion—and what it looks like to wrestle honestly with God through grief, suffering, anger, and unanswered prayers without losing hope or letting bitterness take root.Suggested Resources:Stand to Reason The Case for ChristThe Anxious GenerationBad TherapyScrolling Ourselves to DeathSend me a text! This episode is proudly sponsored by: SizzlefishLet's talk about fueling your body with the best nature has to offer. Show Summary On today's episode, we're having a conversation with Licensed Clinical Social Worker Amanda Noyes, the founder of Finding Freedom Therapy and member of the DFW First Responders Support Network. We talk about Trauma therapy and mental health networks for service members, veterans and first responders Provide FeedbackAs a dedicated member of the audience, we would like to hear from you. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker–Supervisor with over 25 years of experience, she has had the opportunity to work in numerous crisis situations where she witnessed firsthand the gravity of trauma and grief. It was in these situations that she realized there were not enough opportunities to heal from trauma and loss after the initial crisis. With this knowledge, she formed Finding Freedom Therapy, PLLC, in 2014 with the vision of providing specialized treatment to those who have endured (or are continuing to endure) horrific traumas and unspeakable losses. After earning her degree in psychology and international studies from Texas A&M University, Amanda pursued her Master of Science in Social Work at the University of Texas at Austin. Throughout her career, she has had the unique opportunity to gain notable hands-on experience, much of which was working in conjunction with the military, first responders, and frontline workers. She has worked alongside probation and parole officers in the field, with police officers on-scene, supported doctors and nurses in the ED and ICU departments of level-one trauma centers, counseled families of the recently deceased at the moment of loss, and worked next to the U.S. National Guard when assisting during Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Ike, and Harvey.Amanda's experience with veterans and military service members began early in her career with her graduate internship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Hospital, and later continued with her work as lead trauma therapist for an inpatient military program, Freedom Care, where she worked with active-duty combat military and veterans suffering from PTSD. She is trained in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and Written Exposure Therapy (WET). Each and every step of her career has shaped and strengthened her ability to better assist clients through the most difficult times in their lives.Links Mentioned in this Episode Finding Freedom Therapy WebsiteDFW First Responders Support NetworkPsychArmor Resource of the WeekThis week's resource of the week is the PsychArmor course Trauma Informed Interactions with Veterans. Most podcasters wait until everything is ready before they launch their next offer. Eileen Noyes signed 11 high-ticket coaching clients in two weeks, right before Thanksgiving, from a podcast she almost never started. A mom of eight who spent 16 years in a marriage where her voice was treated as property, Eileen rebuilt everything, launched The Unsidelined Life Podcast, and turned it into the engine behind a book, a coaching business, and a brand that sells without a sales pitch. Eileen Noyes is the host of The Unsidelined Life Podcast, founder of Lady Bellator, author of Sidelined No More and Rise Up, Lady Bellator, speaker, mentor, and coach helping family-devoted women reclaim their identity, voice, and purpose. In this episode of Podcasting Secrets with host Nathan Gwilliam, Eileen shares how 90 shows wanted her as a guest in just two months and what she learned about saying no, why she launched coaching before Thanksgiving instead of waiting for the right moment and signed 11 high-ticket clients in two weeks, how she built a podcast and book as one connected ecosystem where each asset feeds the other, and the one question that sharpened her show and drives everything she creates. On a forgotten platform at a junction no map records, a man waits for a train he half-remembers from childhood nightmares. In his hands, a battered red book falls open, again and again, to the same impossible picture: a tunnel mouth, a lamp, a solitary figure who will not quite turn his face to the light. As the night thickens and the pages repeat themselves, memory and prediction begin to trade places, and the question of who is watching whom will not stay safely inside the story. First published in The London Mercury in November 1935; later collected in the volume The Sun Cure (1936). Now widely reprinted in anthologies of supernatural and psychological horror, where it has earned a reputation as a minor classic. Alfred Noyes (1880–1958) was a British poet and prose writer, best known for poems such as “The Highwayman”. Alongside his popular verse, he wrote a small but influential body of uncanny fiction, of which “Midnight Express” is the most celebrated. Today she is over two years clean and sober, living a life she once believed was impossible. Join Dr. Bruce Reider as he welcomes a pioneer in sports medicine, Dr. Frank Noyes. In this conversation, Noyes shares the foundations of his esteemed career, a journey influenced by studies in philosophy, epidemiology, and bioengineering. Send us a textWhat happens when a Nordic engine meets Wasatch steeps and a taste for big objectives? We sit down with pro skier and trail runner Mali Noyes to trace the throughline from Sun Valley ski kid to freeride competitor to ultra podium threat, and the conversation is packed with sharp takeaways you can use right away.Mali unpacks the modern mountain athlete's toolkit: how backcountry ski touring builds unmatched muscular endurance, why Speedgoat rewards poles and patience at altitude, and how pacing transforms “survival” into a strong finish. We go inside freeride fundamentals—venue scouting, judging criteria, and the fast-and-fluid style that actually scores—then zoom out to the career reality where athletes must be storytellers, producers, and community builders. Mali shares how she approaches YouTube with authenticity over polish, using simple tools to bring people into the raw, decision-heavy world of snow, lines, and risk.We dig into UTMB ambitions, comparing CCC's runnable rhythm with the power-hike nature of Speedgoat, and why the Wasatch is a near-perfect training ground for European profiles. Mali is candid about nerve pain and the grind of messy injuries, emphasizing critical PT, hip and core rebuilding, and data that supports intuition—heart rate, lactate, HRV, and truly easy recovery days. The capstone is The Shooting Gallery: skiing all 93 steep Wasatch lines in 47 days. It's a masterclass in logistics, avalanche judgment, partner management, and mental endurance, stacking over 300,000 feet of vert while staying sharp enough to make clean choices day after day.If you care about mountain performance, women's representation in snowsports, or the craft of turning adventures into stories that matter, this one will stick with you. Why do you believe what you say you believe? For many years Jon would ask his believing friends that very questions. The answers he got were not persuasive and usually he left the conversation more affirmed in his atheism. The reason we should believe something is because it accurately reflects the way the world really is. In this talk Jon explores his past as an atheist and shows why he had to make the worldview change he did as his atheism started bumping him into reality. Some bumps were harder than others. Today, on Karl and Crew, we continued our weekly theme of “Tough Questions for Christians” with discussions about walking with Jesus despite suffering and tribulations. We turn to John 6:66, where we see a conversation between Jesus and the Twelve Disciples, in which Jesus asks if they intend to leave Him, along with the other disciples. Peter responds by saying there’s no other place they’d rather be because Jesus gives eternal life and they believe He is the Holy One of God. We then turned to the phone lines to ask our listeners, "What was your 'where else would I go' moment with Jesus?" We then had Dr. Michael Rydelnik join us to talk about why God chose Israel. Dr. Rydelnik is a Professor Emeritus of Jewish and Biblical Studies and an adjunct professor in the undergraduate program at MBI. He is also the host and Bible teacher of “Open Line,” which airs every Saturday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. CT on Moody Broadcasting and over 225 other stations. Then we had Jonathan Noyes join us to share his faith story, explaining how he transitioned from an atheist to a believer and how he came to understand God’s sovereignty amid evil. Jonathan is a Speaker and Outreach Coordinator with Stand to Reason, a nonprofit organization that equips Christian Ambassadors with wisdom, knowledge, and character to share the Gospel. Jonathan was a former atheist who has now become a believer and has a passion for training Christians to think more clearly about their beliefs and effectively communicate why they hold those beliefs to others. Jon grew up in Plymouth, MA (between Boston & Providence) knowing essentially zero Christians and never stepping foot in a church.. except maybe for a friend's school project. In his late teens and into his twenties, he loved talking to Christians - to destroy them! In argument. He knew which questions to ask to stump Christians and loved "making them look stupid." He couldn't believe that anyone didn't believe in Darwin's evolutionary theory. Yet, now he spends his life defending the Christian faith. How in the world did that happen? Tune in to hear that story, including some amazing and entertaining stories of ways Christ has moved through Jon in the years since. If you are a Christian, you are called to be an ambassador for Christ!Make sure you are a 1 Peter 3:15 Christian - "but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect"Attend Reality Conference this year! https://www.realityapologetics.com/More about Jon: https://www.str.org/jonathan-noyesEmail interview & speaking Inquiries for E.J. to ej.freedomfamilies@gmail.com
It's been a month since Kris and Tara have seen each other's faces and they have a lot to catch up on! Kris is in hell, physically and otherwise, dreaming of her recent relaxing, internet-free trip to the lake. Tara's kids are back in the September school rush, so everything's a blur between that and work. They talk Jimmy Kimmel, Jon Stewart, as well as Harlequin's recent sapphic releases, which are a nice change from yesteryear. Official Recommendations From Kris: Can We Skip to the Good Part by Melissa Brayden Kris's official recommendation this week is Can We Skip to the Good Part by Melissa Brayden, her first independently published book. It's a story of new beginnings, as a woman is let go from her job and starts fresh in a new town with her best friend and a new book club. This story offers love, insane chemistry, and some tricky maneuvering. If you haven't read anything by Brayden before, Kris thinks it's a great place to start. From Tara: One Weekend in Tahoe by Jaime Clevenger Tara's official recommendation this week is the one-night-to-forever One Weekend in Tahoe by Jaime Clevenger. It's a trope-filled erotic romance set in the worlds of philanthropy and sex parties (not at the same time) that balances enough sweetness with a little bit of the real world. What does it look like to raise children who can stand firm in their faith—while also engaging the culture with grace and truth? In our latest Homeschool Talks episode, Jonathan Noyes from Stand to Reason shares his own journey from atheism to Christianity and how that transformation fuels his passion for equipping families. In this discussion with HSLDA President Jim Mason, they explore how to introduce varying worldviews while planting seeds of the gospel in your children. “We don't just keep our kids in these little bubbles and then suddenly when their adults throw them out, because they won't survive. What we should be doing is inoculating our kids with the truth. Teaching our kids. in the context of our homeschool communities, teaching them about evolution, and not just the Christian perspective of evolution. Teach them from the naturalistic, the “true evolution”, and then you teach them what it really means to be an evolutionist. You teach them why [it is] wrong. . .we should be exposing our kids in appropriate ways to worldview issues at a young age because they're going to get exposed. Once your kid gets a phone, once your kid get access to online stuff, it's already too late. So we should be exposing our kids in order to inoculate, not isolate, in order expose them to the wind so they don't just get pushed over.”—Jon Noyes
Based on what he's accomplished, it's hard to believe that Dennis Noyes isn't a lifelong motorcyclist. But it's true as he didn't discover the sport until he was in his 20s, with a visit to the Spanish Grand Prix in 1968. That was all it took as he was immediately hooked. Noyes started riding and that quickly turned into racing. Then came the perfect job as a motojournalist, which not only allowed him to cover the World Championship, but also gave him the opportunity to test motorcycles and write about them. Since then, Noyes has become one of the most respected journalists in the MotoGP World Championship, having both written and spoken extensively about motorcycle racing as both a print and television journalist. More recently, Noyes has also made good on a dream of writing a non-motorcycle novel. We caught up with Noyes from his home in the desert town of Borrego Springs, California, to talk about motorcycle racing and life as an American in Spain on this week's episode of Off Track With Carruthers And Bice.Support the show
It's back-to-school season and illness is in the air! Kris returns from her deathbed with tales of the flu (definitely NOT a recommendation) and Tara encounters her first COVID romance (which is a recommendation). Kris lays out tips for eBay seller success and Tara discusses her reaction to James Dobson's death as an ex-Evangelical (TL;DR: fuck that guy). Official Recommendations From Kris: Giant Little Ones (2018) Kris's official recommendation this week is Giant Little Ones (2018). It's a film about two high school boys who are teenage royalty and adored by the girls, whose lives are changed during an epic 17th birthday party. According to Kris, this story is full of drama, reminding her of how awful those teenage years are. There is some violence against gay people in this movie, but Kris still thinks the quality and the story are worth the discomfort if you're able. From Tara: Make or Break by E. J. Noyes Tara's official recommendation this week is Make or Break by E. J. Noyes. It's a sapphic romance novel that takes place on the set of a police drama between one of the leading actors and the key makeup artist. They've each had a crush on the other for years, but never knew if their crushes were returned. Tara says this one is a gentle romance with excellent character arcs. It's happened: MotoGP is now the property of Liberty Media, owner of Formula 1. So, what now? Well, things are definitely going to change and that might not be a bad thing. Change is life, right? The only question is which changes are necessary, which are wanted and which are inevitable. To find an answer to this, Mat and Peter turn to the one and only Dennis Noyes. Dennis was a racer, he's one hell of a journalist and commentator, and he's right here with us for a little chat. See, this isn't the first time that the whole circus was sold and it most definitely won't be the last. So what happened last time around, when the Spanish moved in and Dorna Sports bought it all? And how was that different from now? Noyes is intimately familiar with this world, covering MotoGP from Spain. His son, Kenny Noyes, won the 2014 Spanish Superbike championship before suffering a career-ending crash the following year. You want someone that knows the culture, the history and the sport? Noyes is your man. So join us as we attempt to look at the future of MotoGP under it's new corporate overlords, before immediately getting distracted and talking instead about that time King Kenny gave the King of Spain rabbit ears. Mali Noyes just pulled off a mind-blowing feat in the ski world: completing the Chuting Gallery in 47 days. That's 93 chutes (she actually did more than that) around the Wasatch in 47 days, with over 200,000 feet of vert climbed, while navigating tricky conditions, complex terrain, incredible physical demands, and mental and emotional fatigue. And she pulled it all off in a time that seems almost unfathomable. So how did she do it? And what led her to take it on? Jonathan Ellsworth talks with Mali about all of it, including some of the best advice she received from Greg Hill, Cody Townsend, Janelle Smiley, and Sam Smoothy.RELATED LINKS:Episode Sponsor: Skratch LabsGet Yourself Covered: BLISTER+Mali's YouTube ChannelTOPICS & TIMES:Skratch Labs: JE's favorite product (1:14)New BLISTER+ Members (2:13)History of The Chuting Gallery (3:47)What Were Your Goals?
