The Truth About Coning Won't Destroy Your Core

The journey toward understanding diastasis recti has been filled with misconceptions, fear, and outdated advice. As a pelvic floor physical therapist who's witnessed this evolution firsthand, I'm sharing why our approach to core health in pregnancy needs a complete reframe. What exactly is diastasis recti? It's not a tear or split, but rather a normal lengthening of the tissue between your rectus (six-pack) muscles to accommodate your growing baby. For years, we've defined it as a gap wider than two finger widths during a head lift – but recent research shows over 57% of the general population has this "condition," whether they've been pregnant or not. When more than half of us have this supposed "dysfunction," perhaps we need to reconsider what's actually normal. The advice to avoid all "coning" (that visible dome shape along your midline during exercise) has scared countless pregnant people away from maintaining their core strength. This fear-based approach often leads to unnecessary deconditioning that makes postpartum recovery harder, not easier. I've seen this both in my clinical practice and in my own pregnancies – the pregnant athletes who maintained appropriate strength training often bounce back faster, even if they experienced some coning along the way.Leading experts like Diane Lee are now suggesting we need completely new frameworks – perhaps only considering gaps of four finger widths or greater as clinically meaningful, while also incorporating functional strength assessments and quality of life measures. The gap measurement alone tells us very little about how well your core functions or how you feel in your daily activities.Ready to rethink everything you've been told about your core during pregnancy? Join me as we explore the science behind these changing perspectives and discover how to stay strong through pregnancy without unnecessary fear. What have you been told about diastasis recti? Share your experience or questions, and let's continue this important conversation about pregnancy, strength, and our evolving understanding of what's truly normal.___________________________________________________________________________Don't miss out on any of the TEA coming out of the Barbell Mamas by subscribing to our newsletter You can also follow us on Instagram and YouTube for all the up-to-date information you need about pelvic health and female athletes. A just King brings life, growth, and renewal—our sustenance is found in Christ. #daybydaylw Interested in learning more about becoming a devoted follower of Christ? Go to follow.lifeword.org! ~~~ Reflection: A just ruler who fears God is like the dawn breaking through darkness, like rain refreshing the land. The reign of Jesus Christ is our ultimate source of life and nourishment. Abiding in Him ensures spiritual vitality and growth. Without light and water, the earth becomes barren. Likewise, without Christ's rule in our lives, we wither spiritually. The righteousness of Christ provides the life we need to thrive. When we submit to His authority, we experience true peace and joy, knowing that His reign is one of justice, mercy, and provision. This metaphor reminds us of how much we need Jesus daily. Just as a plant cannot thrive without sunlight and water, we cannot grow spiritually apart from Christ. Many times, we attempt to sustain ourselves through human strength, yet the true source of life is found in abiding in Jesus. He refreshes our weary souls, provides direction, and nourishes us with His truth. His justice ensures that righteousness will ultimately prevail in the world, bringing hope to those who suffer under the weight of sin and oppression. 3 Prayer Points: Thank God for His life-giving rule. Ask for a heart that abides in Christ. Pray for the Church to reflect His kingdom reign. 2 Peoples to pray for Doug & Diane Lee, our missionaries in the Philippines The Urdu Lifeword broadcast for the people of Pakistan 1 Summary: A just King brings life, growth, and renewal—our sustenance is found in Christ.

Why are some Singapore companies willing to bear the expense to implement pet-care leave as a form of benefit? Synopsis: Every month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at Singapore's social issues of the day with guests. While fewer people are keen on having children, more are becoming pet owners, based on statistics from the Animal and Veterinary Service and an Euromonitor International report. But what happens if you have a full-time job and your pet is sick? Instead of requiring their employees to take urgent leave, some firms in Singapore have begun rolling out pet care leave, for "pawrents" who need to take their furkids to the vet. Only a small number of firms have started implementing it, but the response from employees has so far been overwhelmingly positive. In this episode, ST assistant podcast editor Lynda Hong and her co-host - journalist Aqil Hamzah - ask their two guests whether having a separate leave category the caring of pets is ultimately a good thing, and whether it’d affect the morale of those without pets. The two guests are: Emilyn Ang, founder of public relations and marketing agency Brave Communications, which provides three days of “pawrental” leave a year; and Diane Lee, a senior HR business partner for South-east Asia at recruitment firm Robert Walters. However, in creating a product for this purpose, it's not as simple as it seems; there's a lot that needs to be addressed, and input from patients is paramount in creating a successful, helpful therapy. We are all therapists at the end of the day.   All of us have received emails and phone calls for people's lives that we have transformed. That's what's most important and that's what brings us to something like continuing education. We are so hungry to learn more, to develop new skills, to expand our knowledge. By nature, therapists are intellectually curious and compassionate people. There is just so much that OT's and PT's have to learn from one another. I personally have trained with some amazing PTs such as Diane Lee-  her ISM series has been tremendous for my clients and at the same time PTs have taken my online pelvic health course and felt that it brought such a value to their practice. There's a definite need to cross collaborate and interest in serving our clients while expanding our knowledge base. While I know things are changing- there is a huge gap of knowledge around OT's role within the pelvic health field. Most people associate pelvic health with PTs-  so many are surprised to see us – to see ots in this specialty. Although it is within our scope of practice, it is up to each one of us to create our own path to competency to be able to work with our pelvic health clients. I think most of us can agree that with the majority of therapists specialized learning comes post graduation.  Both PT's and OT's come to pelvic health from such varied backgrounds that this is what creates a rich individualized experience for our clients. This however also adds to the confusion around what a pelvic health session is like. It's hard to place an experience in a box when we each have our own way of getting there.  like OTs take their own paths, pts take their own when to comes to specializing in pelvic health. the APTA even has their own women's health section which is incredible and while there are certifications available out there, such as PRPC through Herrmann and Wallace to streamline the path professionals can take, in most areas of the world these certifications are not required for practicing within pelvic health, again adding to the confusion around who's doing what. however there are more clients in need of this very special area of rehab and there's room for us all. Just as OT's and PT's work side-by-side in other fields of rehab, there's a huge need for us to work collaborating in ph, especially when you consider the sensitive taboo nature of this area of practice. It's been my experience that the general population has such poor understanding of pelvic floor function and particularly how it impacts us from a whole body, whole person perspective that I think the more of us -OT and PT- working together in this field to spread the message, the better.  pelvic floor function is a crucial part of a much broader functional tasks of toileting and intimacy, Both of which have broader connections within a person's emotional cognitive and social abilities. It's also important to consider the social implications for people with pelvic floor issues -withdrawal from social and recreational activities, social isolation, disempowerment, lack of self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and the impact on close relationships such as with our spouse, our friends and our children. It's so delightful to have a multidisciplinary approach. It serve

No longer can you, Mr. Hiring manager, get away with bad behavior in an interview and think you will be able to hire the person across the desk from you. When your offer gets turned down and you think it was because of a higher offer, know that was probably not the case. It’s you, not me! Today’s Quote: "Etiquette means behaving yourself a little better than is absolutely essential." - Will Cupp Guest Bio: Diane Lee is a foremost expert in providing professionals, specifically millennial workers, with the business etiquette best practices needed to successfully present themselves in the workforce. Diane founded Street Smart Etiquette in 2011 to empower millennials beyond the theoretical, offering hands-on workshops and individualized etiquette courses to help them master business soft skills, and ultimately achieve career success. She has conducted business etiquette classes on California State University campuses at Fullerton, Long Beach and Northridge, along with El Camino, Long Beach and Pasadena community colleges. Diane has been a featured speaker for many Los Angeles and Orange County community, civic and business organizations. This venture builds on Diane’s successful career in journalism and business marketing. After graduating from California State University, Long Beach, with a degree in public relations and business, Diane made a career in Maui, Hawaii, where she played many roles in the hospitality industry and television, and was a freelance writer. In the consumer food product industry, Diane expanded the production and distribution of many Hawaiian brands throughout the Pacific Rim and western United States, and achieved millions in annual sales for her clients. After relocating back to the Los Angeles/Orange County area in 2008, Diane found herself at the Disneyland Resort, where she discovered her passion for training and development in the Guest Relations department. That’s where the light bulb went off and the urgent need for interpersonal communication skills was identified. Diane earned her credentials as a certified trainer at The Protocol School of Washington, and is also a certified training designer through the Association of Talent Development (formerly ASTD). What is pelvic floor health? What connection does the pelvic floor have with my core muscles? What can physical therapy and the Total Control® program do to help you? What can you do to help yourself? More than a “Kegel class”, the Total Control® program is built around the Pelvic Pyramid, a concept developed by Canadian physiotherapist Diane Lee, which includes the transversus abdominus, the multifidii & the pelvic floor muscles. Some symptoms of a weak pelvic floor include; Leaking small amounts of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing or running, Backache, Reduced sensation in the vagina. Pregnancy, childbirth, obesity and the straining of chronic constipation can weaken the pelvic floor and cause urinary incontinence. Join Dr. Ivan Huergo and Anna Albrecht as they discuss the Total Control® program . This medically-based fitness and educational program has been shown in research to boost sex, flatten tummies, improve bladder control. Total Control® can change your life!
